We're back spreading the good stuff with a conversation about 'chasing your dreams' and of course, we can't not talk about the amazing Matildas! Right off the bat, it was hard to contain how totally pumped we were, along with the rest of the country, about the incredible journey that our national women's soccer team has been on during the FIFA Womens World Cup. We recorded this episode the morning after our heartbreaking loss to England (who were unfortunately the better team on the night) and it was great to reflect on the far-reaching impact the Matilda's journey has had, and will continue to have, into the future. Who said you can't commercialise women's sport? This conversation also covers a lovely listener request - thank you to Jamie - about how to chase your dreams while caring for little people. We each share how we managed (and continue to manage) to keep our dreams alive while in the trenches with young children or tending to teenagers. Being kind to yourself, not comparing yourself to others, being patient and staying focussed on not letting go of your dreams by just doing little things along the way, were all tips we shared. Thanks again for joining us on Spreading the Good Stuff. For all show notes for this and all our other episodes pop on over to our podcast page at The Splendid Word. Christy, Katrina and Leonie xxx

Summary: ¡Bienvenido a Argentina! In our fifth and final stop of the Summer Jetset Series, Holly and Devin spend some time in South America enjoying books set in Argentina. They both agree that South America is underrepresented in books for both their wheelhouses and advocate for readers to seek out books from the continent purposefully, especially in translation. The use of magical elements across genres and the horrors of Argentine history are key for novels from the country and they both agree if available, Holly and Devin would literally and metaphorically travel to Argentina again. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:34): Holly discussed Death Going Down by María Angélica Bosco, a 1950s whodunnit that begins with a young man stumbling home drunkenly in the wee hours of the morning to find a beautiful young woman in the elevator up to his apartment - dead. From there, detectives delve into the mystery of the victim and her death as well as the colorful lives of the building residents. Holly's key takeaways were: Bosco's style is reminiscent of Agatha Christie or the Nancy Drew series; there's a large cast of characters in the building that act as suspects and each has their own secrets and motives. Unlike Louise Penny, the novel focuses less on the detectives and much more on the residents of the building - all of whom Holly enjoyed greatly. This book brought a strong sense of history and its place in time. Written in 1954, “Death Going Down” includes the fallout from WWII and the European (and nazi) escaping to Argentina and other South American countries. There's a sense of suspicion around certain characters depending on where they're from originally. The novel lacks a strong sense of place and the reader shouldn't expect to get a very good feel of Argentina as a whole. The focus remains on the apartment building and its residents, similar to the TV show “Only Murders in the Building.” The Heart (16:34): Devin discussed Hades, Argentina by Daniel Loedel, an Orpheus retelling set during the Dirty War of Argentina, specifically 1976. Tomás Orilla is a young medical student in Buenos Aires who has been in love with his childhood friend Isabella for years. As tensions increase between the Argentinian government and young insurgents fighting the oppressive regime, Tomás does all he can to prove his love to Isabella until he's forced to flee the country for New York City, living as Thomas Shore for a decade. But can he ever truly leave behind Isabelle and what he did in ‘76? As Orpheus descended into hell to retrieve Eurydice, so too Tomás entered the underworld to save Isabelle and make peace with his choices. A magical realism ghost story, Loedel blurs the lines between modern reality and ghosts interacting with our protagonist. Usually this is to good effect, but occasionally leaves the reader confused about which world we're in. Tomas and almost every character in the book are plagued by guilt and shame over what they did to survive during the Dirty War. There are also descriptions of what many of those acts were, including torture and sexual violence. Please use caution as there are *trigger warnings* for the novel. Loedel treats young love as simultaneously foolish and a force so powerful it brings back the dead. “Hades, Argentina” explores the extent to which someone will sacrifice their self-hood for love and how unrequited love can impact the trajectory of a person. This episode features Sally Freedman - Author - Fairplay Publishing This episode covers: Sally's debut book "Get Your Tits Out for the Lads" The Football Writers Festival The importance of governing bodies taking accountability And much more! Sally on her book: Sadly throughout my time working in football in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, there were many stories related to sexism, misogyny and gender inequality. I joked on a podcast one day that I probably had enough stories to write a book. I didn't know, but at that time, the publisher of the book was listening and got in touch with me and said; "Sally, if you are going to write a book, please let me publish it." The idea was to launch it before the FIFA Womens World Cup 2023, so I had a year to try and put some thoughts and diary entries down and I made the deadline and even now, when I say I have a published book, I still don't quite believe it. Sally on media coverage: We are playing catch-up. With the rise of Women's sport, not only football, we are finally seeing change. But in my opinion, it's too little, too late. Why did it take England winning a trophy for people to stand up and start reporting on women's Football? That's what I struggle with. When the culture is rotten from the top, it's very, very hard to change. In the UK, female commentators and reporters are part of the furniture now, but that isn't replicated across the world. Sally on change: Governing bodies can do more in terms of accountability and punishment for when sexism is called out. But I make it clear in my book, I don't blame men. We are living in a gendered, stereotyped world where we all have bias and that is hard for anyone to change.

History was made last night at Hampden Park when the Republic of Ireland beat Scotland 1-0 to qualify directly for the 2023 Fifa Womens World Cup that will take place in Australia and New Zealand. Amber Barrett's goal was the difference between the sides with Ireland having to defend under severe pressure in the final minutes. In one of Australia’s greatest symbols of hope in 2020, Jane Fernandez and team have won the bid for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. They did it by joining with a competitor and winning votes with delegates on the other side of the world, in the middle of the night, on Zoom.
