This week the US Soccer Federation (USSF) and the US Women's National Team settled a six year fight over equal pay. The players will receive $24m. The USSF has promised to equalise pay between men's and women's national teams for all competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.Why is this happening now?Next week the USSF elects its next president, whose tenure will include the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico. The two candidates are former president Carlos Cordeiro and today's guest, the acting president Cindy Parlow Cone, who took over two years ago, when Cordeiro was forced to resign after his legal team filed court documents that implied men are better than women, so should get more money.“…by ignoring the materially higher level of speed and strength required to perform the job of a Men's National Team (MNT) player. A reasonable juror could conclude that the job of MNT player requires materially different skill and more responsibility than plaintiffs' job does, while also taking place under materially different working conditions,” .Cue a shitstorm: Coke, Visa, Nike et al took umbrage and Cordeiro walked, leaving the USSF in chaos. And that's saying something, given the organisation was led by Chuck Blazer for thirty years, until he was flipped by the FBI as part of their FIFA corruption investigation…So Cone for Prez? Maybe…Given the context, Parlow Cone appears a shoe-in for president. But the word is that the election will be close. So this week's news feels very strategic. After six years, the pay dispute is suddenly settled days before the election.Cone is a former US international player and has Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and every pro-women, equal pay supporting liberal member of the USSF selling her campaign across social and mainstream media under the banner of ‘forward not back'.But elections are not about the candidates, they're about the voters. Read the threads that followed the news of this week's equal pay settlement and you'll meet the usual culture warriors doing their thing. Carlos Cordeiro's campaign is focused on his business background and a plan for the grassroots development of the game in America, a key USSF constituency. When it comes to leadership and carrying responsibility and a vision for the future growth of US Soccer and putting your name to it, you have to be committed, knowledgeable and certainly a people person.Tim Turney has all of the above and more. Sporting Denvers’ Richie English gets connected with Tim to see what it’s all about………… a potential belter. Put the kettle on and tune in. SOCIAL MEDIA LINK…TWITTER @TimTurney14Tim Turney became the second person to announce his candidacy for U.S. Soccer vice president. The U.S. Youth Soccer vice chairman joins the race to fill the post left vacant when Cindy Parlow Cone took over as president in March following Carlos Cordeiro's resignation.Cone was elected to a four-year term in February, defeating John Motta, so the winner of the vice-presidential race will fill the remaining three years of Cone's term.Turney, who hails from St. Louis, has been involved as a coach and referee since he moved to Versailles, a small town in Kentucky's horse country. Vice-chair of the US Youth Soccer Association, Tim Turney previously served as president of the Kentucky Youth Soccer Association and the Woodford Youth Soccer Association. During his tenure at KYSA, Turney helped run the National Olympic Development Program Tournament for U.S. Youth Soccer.Soccer in the Bluegrass reached out to Tim Turney, a former Kentucky Youth Soccer Association president and current Vice President of U.S. Youth Soccer, who is helping lead a number of new initiatives to move U.S. Soccer forward.“Our job is to put kids on the field, and help them learn the game, get healthy, and have fun.”Turney got his start in Woodford County Youth Soccer and continues to live in Versailles. As a U.S. Soccer board member, he has been part of a number of changes in the last couple of years to bring fun back into the game while at the same time enhancing player skill levels.“We’re really talking about entry level into soccer. So anything from three to four years old,” Turney said. “What is it that we have to do as a Youth Association to get them interested in the game? Some of the things we’re doing is we’re looking at partnering with school districts to get soccer a little more as part of the physical education program, even if that means bringing in some of our coaches.”To further support player development, U.S. Soccer is looking to create after-school programs. In places such as Chicago, New York, and Boston, there are many basketball courts in the inner cities – some of which are in disrepair. The U.S. Soccer Foundation is planning to rebuild some of these courts into dual-purpose soccer courts to encourage kids to go out and play. But their focus hasn’t only been on the young players. U.S. Soccer has established a list of criteria for it’s older developing players to adhere to in order to gain its financial support and offer high-level training and games intended to put U.S. players in the most competitive environment available.

There's still not much to talk about on the pitch, but the battle between the USWNT and US Soccer rages on. Both sides have filed Summary Judgement motions, and the outcome could change the landscape of the battle for Equal Pay--and soccer--in the United States for years to come. The Federation's motion caused the ouster of former president Carlos Cordeiro, but that doesn't mean they don't have a solid argument. To discuss the motions, I called up fellow attorney and journalist Kelsey Trainor, who has been following the case as closely as anyone. We talk about the merits of the arguments, and the potential outcomes depending on how the judge rules in the case. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The soccer world continues to deal with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with leagues around the world shutting down. Here in the United States, MLS is in the middle of a suspension of its season, and US Soccer has suspended all competitions (including the US Open Cup) until further notice. MLS for its part is hoping to restart league games by May 10, and is extending its moratorium on training on a week-by-week basis. The longer the suspension goes on, the more consequences there will be for all leagues in the form of cancelled games and competitions. To discuss where we go from here, I'm joined by Jeff Carlisle, national writer for ESPNFC.com, to get his insight on how MLS is dealing with the pandemic, when we might see team back on the field, and what the season might look like when we do. We also discuss how the US Soccer Federation is handling the pandemic, and chat a little about the fallout from the resignation of president Carlos Cordeiro. Learn more about your ad choices. The headline on CNN said it all: "America is on hold." In what seemed like mere minutes, sports leagues, concerts, festivals, celebrations, and other large galas went from "wait and see" to "postponed indefinitely" or canceled. Coronavirus has made its way into the very fabric of the world, and, with it, among many other things, postponed the CCL match between your LAFC black and gold and the blue cross of Cruz Azul.An hour or so after recording a superpod with many of the other #lafcpodfam on YouTube, moderated by Jerry Jimenez of Heart of LAFC, the boys sat down to tackle the topic on Defenders. Clearly, "strange things are afoot at the Circle K", so Filly and Scarf dive headfirst into the issue. We know that our listeners share the concerns that we both have about everyone's safety and health. But we also know that you need a break from the constant updates on social media and texts among friends about all this. We can only hope to be a nice 45-minute distraction, a reason to make you laugh, think, or smile, and to bring a bit of Black and Gold levity to these times. On this episode, we bid a not-so-fond farewell to Carlos Cordeiro, we wish happy birthday to ex-LAFC netminder Tyler Miller, and we implore you once again to support the NWSL to LA movement. From the opening stanza of Filly's introductory rap to our trademark "bye-bye" at the end of the episode, we hope you enjoy a break from the whirlwind, and we want to remind you that we are all in this together. Well. It's been quite a week in US Soccer. The Federation has a new president in Cindy Parlow Cone, who takes over after Carlos Cordeiro resigned in the aftermath of charged legal filings in the Equal Pay lawsuit filed by the US Women's National Team. Cordeiro's fate was sealed as the backlash from media, fans and sponsors threatened to overwhelm the Federation. The Fed has a lot of work to do to clean up this mess, and it's an open question whether Cordeiro leaving will resolve the problems. To talk about what led to Cordeiro's ouster, I called up fellow attorney Neil Blackmon and Kartik Krishnaiyer, both of whom are observers of the Men's and Women's National team, as well as the Federation. Here is the latest information and how the U.S. Soccer and the president, Carlos Cordeiro, along with some nonsense libertarian think tank publications, seem to think that, actually, everything is fine. It isn’t. 03:45: Here is one of the fun articles Rebekah wrote when she decided to poke the bear’s nest, AKA the MRA’s. Enjoy. She sure did. 05:15: Whelp, here it is. Thanks to Betsy DeVos, most unqualified person to ever lead the Department of Education, all these MRAs are filing civil rights claims that basically say that women’s groups on campus are discriminating against men. This is after they spent years suing women-owned businesses. Here’s the thing. If women sued all the men-owned businesses we wouldn’t even have time to take a shit. 08:45: Listen to our amazing episode with Donna Freitas. And read her book! 11:40: Here is an AMAZING video on Holly Knox who founded the Project on Equal Education Rights (PEER) in the early 1970s. 15:00: Check out Girls for Gender Equity which is an AMAZING organization. They work really hard to empower girls and young women of color. This is really what our future relies on. 25:00: Remember Producer Cait? The MLS has decided to remove fans from their stadiums for the crime of bringing in the signage promoting controversial stances like Anti-Fascism, Anti-Racism and Gun Violence. Ensuring a fun time is had for all, including the racist, gun violence loving family of four who purchased those San Jose Earthquakes tickets with their Freedom Bucks. The TSP crew discuss this rule and try to remember the last time a sign was powerful enough to end Racism or Gun Violence. In England, the Premier League is on the cusp of its 3rdweek of matches with this weekend's highlight match pitting Liverpool v Arsenal. There were some solid displays of spectacular Football but the new VAR rules in the box played a major factor in a game each week. The transfer window is still open and some big names were able to find new homes now that September 2nd is in sight. Phil Coutinho, Mario Balotelli and Daniel Sturridge found interesting landing spots while Neymar is still in Paris sulking. Only time will tell if Barcelona can put together a deal to appease PSG or if a larger club provides a lifeline for our brooding, oft injured superstar. Jose Mourinho wishes he was still working, Carlos Cordeiro still doesn't understand how equal pay works, Alexi Lalas is asked to partake in a flexibility challenge and more on a confrontational installment of The Set Piece. Please be advised, there may be some audio issues on the show clips.

Grant and Brian break down Day 6 of World Cup 2018, including Russia's 3-1 win over Egypt that gives the hosts 6 points and almost certainly a berth in the Round of 16; Senegal's 2-1 victory over Poland and Japan's 2-1 win against Colombia, the first time an Asian team has beaten a South American team at a men's World Cup. Then Grant is joined by U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro, who gives the inside skinny on how the World Cup '26 bid was won and explains what's next on his plate with the federation. In the second installment of our three-part mini series, the conversation turns to the contentious topic of Pro/Rel. Are the barriers to entry anti-competitive? Is the current closed system partly to blame for the men's national team failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup? Can newly-elected USSF president Carlos Cordeiro relinquish control from the de facto gatekeepers, the MLS owners? Kevin Egan sits down with NASL interim commissioner Rishi Sehgal, 13-year MLS and NASL veteran Hunter Freeman, five-year NWSL veteran Stephanie Ochs, and a man who has seen (and called) it all, Phil Schoen, to discuss the future of the sport in America.
The U.S. men's national team missing out on the 2018 World Cup sent shockwaves through the soccer world and saw Sunil Gulati call an end to his 12-year reign as USSF president. In the presidential election that followed, one word rang louder than all others: 'change'. The eight candidates vying for the job all promised change in some form or another, whether it be to do with the current scouting networks, pay-for-play, inequality in the women's game or the need for promotion/relegation. When asked about the federation's top priority though, the election's eventual winner, Carlos Cordeiro, said his first order of business would be securing co-hosting rights for the 2026 World Cup - along with Canada and Mexico. Using the new president's comments as a jump off point, Kevin Egan sits down with NASL interim commissioner Rishi Sehgal, 13-year MLS and NASL veteran Hunter Freeman, five-year NWSL veteran Stephanie Ochs, and a man who has seen (and called) it all, Phil Schoen, to discuss the future of the sport in America. Part one of our three-part series focuses on how to best marry the business side of the game with youth development.
This is part 3 of our 3-part interview with Hugo Perez. The United States men’s national team experienced its worst moment in its recent history in 2017. Despite a desperate change in management, the team had a poor FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign which ended in its elimination, something that had not happened in 32 years. This campaign also brought out the best in some and the worst in others. For example, some of the most iconic senior players and coaches of the men’s and women’s programs made xenophobic comments about players with dual-citizenship that were being considered for the national squad. But not everything was bad news. Dual-citizenship holder, 18 year-old Christian Pulisic, was the leading scorer for the World Cup qualifier campaign, shifting fans’ interest and hopes to the next generation of players, those born in 1997 and younger. The next generation of U.S. players can potentially become the most successful one ever. For example, there are more young players competing in Mexico and debuting in Liga MX; and there are more U.S. born players currently competing at the academy and senior levels in Spain, Germany, England, Italy, Poland, Denmark, and other countries in Europe. With the new change in leadership, U.S. Soccer’s 32nd President, Carlos Cordeiro, and the rest of the federation’s leadership, have one of the most challenging mandates in recent times, to turn the USMNT program around for the better. While the pool of talent is better and larger that it ever has been for future national teams, the make up of the team will depend greatly on what direction the new technical director and national coaches will want to take. Will we rely on better skilled technical players? Will we continue to stick to more physical and less talented players while the rest of the world moves forward? Do we take advantage of our players with international experience, like the rest of the world? Or do we follow a more protectionist approach and rely on our domestically produced talent? Only the future will reveal what is to come. In this episode of Rethinking Football, we talk to Hugo Perez about the ways we can improve our USMNT program and take advantage of the next generation of players. Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Hugo Perez, is a legend and a true agent of change. Perez was part of the generation that influenced tens of thousands of football lovers in the U.S. As a professional footballer, Perez earned 73 national caps including the Olympic squad. He was a member of the 1994 U.S. World Cup team, and was starter in the unforgettable Round-of-16 match against Brazil. As a coach, Perez has been credited as the architect of the most talented U.S. Youth National team in history. The graduates from his U.S. U-15 boys national squads (between 2012-2014) represent some of the players that can potentially shape the future of the USMNT including Christian Pulisic, Andrew Carleton, Josh Perez, Tyler Adams, Lucas Del Rosario, and Jose Carranza. He also brought Jonathan Gonzalez to the U.S. National Team program.
In his most detailed public comments since coming out of retirement to play for Mexico's Club León, Landon Donovan describes why he made his decision, his lifelong connection to Mexico and Mexican-Americans, what he's capable of in pure soccer terms these days, how he feels about President Trump's stance on Mexico and his reaction to Carlos Cordeiro winning the U.S. Soccer presidential election. We never envisioned having so many new players to talk about in the month since our last episode, but there are a lot of new faces on both Orlando City and the Orlando Pride to discuss on this show. We started out by putting the Cyle Larin transfer to bed. Then we talked about six new Lions since our last outing and it turns out we’re both pretty excited about the Justin Meram trade. We’re also talking about Tom Sermanni’s off-season wizardry, pulling in Sydney Leroux, Emily van Egmond, Poliana, and others. It’s a great appetizer for our interview with Pride defender Shelina Zadorsky, who says she’s looking forward to settling in and becoming a leader on the club. After that, we address the USSF election, U.S. friendlies, the upcoming SheBelieves Cup, and more. We answered listener questions in our #AskTMLPC mailbag and I take the opportunity to ask Dave to give us his spoiler-free thoughts on Black Panther. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just tweet it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s how No. 113 went down: 0:12- Cyle Larin is an ex-Lion, while Cam Lindley, Uri Rosell, Justin Meram, Chris Mueller, Amro Tarek, and Lamine Sane are new Lions. Plus, Sermanni’s additions include internationals from the U.S., Brazil, and Australia! 36:58- Shelina Zadorsky spoke to us about leaving the Washington Spirit to come to Orlando, all the players she already knew on the team prior to her arrival, what she thinks of the club’s off-season moves, what she brings to the squad, and a lot more. 48:58- The USSF election wasn’t a surprise but has us feeling kind of meh. But we’ll see what Carlos Cordeiro brings to the table. Plus, the USMNT and USWNT, the SheBelieves Cup, and hey, Black Panther is out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

He doesn't have the name recognition of Eric Wynalda, he hasn't been in the U.S. Soccer inner circle like Carlos Cordeiro, and he hasn't been campaigning as long as Steve Gans.
