We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, Canadian Premier League, and Canadian national team chat. The Whitecaps didn't get back to winning ways in Toronto but they took a point on the road and that's rarely a bad thing. We delve into the goalless draw against TFC and the main takeaways from the match, that sadly saw injuries to Andres Cubas and Mathias Laborda. Can we read much into the recent blips? Will the team be hampered now against Pumas in the Champions Cup? And how does the weekend's results leave the 'Caps in the lie of the land in the MLS West? We talk about all of that and more and chat with WFC2 standout Nelson Pierre, who made it three goals in three games on Saturday. We've two feature interviews for you this episode. First up is a chat with MLS Apple TV analyst, and former scourge of MLS defences everywhere, Sacha Kljestan. We get Sacha's thoughts about the Whitecaps start to the season, their key players, and the MLS West, plus we talk about his continuing US Open Cup run with Des Moines Menace, switching to punditry, and the US national team woes and whether Brian White can save them. Turning our attention to the CPL, we chat with Pacific FC head coach James Merriman ahead of the new season that gets underway next weekend. We look back at last season, the offseason rebuild, the season ahead, plans for youth players and L1BC, and more. Plus we find out if new Pacific addition, Whitecaps loanee goalkeeper Max Anchor, fancies a chocolate digestive! And after another eventful week for Canada Soccer we talk about the blame game and fingerpointing around Alphonso Davies' injury by Bayern Munich and his agent against the CSA, plus Zach regales us will tales of his trip to the CONCACAF Nations League finals and we look at the admonishment handed out to former men's national team coach John Herdman. Music-wise Athena feature in Wavelength, Sleeper wrap up their residency as our Album of the Month, there's a Britpop song from Joyrider, and special song from Franz Ferdinand that we're dedicating to Lorenzo Insigne. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.25: Intro - football galore and spring break 15.06: Whitecaps goalless and with more injury concerns after Toronto stalemate 33.40: The lie of the land in the MLS West 42.55: Nelson Pierre interview and WFC2 chat 56.10: Sacha Kljestan interview 83.43: James Merriman interview 110.05: Anyone Fancy A Chocolate Digestive? - Max Anchor 117.10: Zach's trip to the Nations League finals 133.53: Alphonso Davies, Bayern Munich, and the Canada Soccer blame game 155.30: Herdman admonished by disciplinary hearing 162.15: Wavelength - Athena - Holigan
Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. The Concacaf Nations League semifinals will be played tonight as the USMNT hosts Panama at 7pm followed by Canada vs. Mexico at 10:30pm, you can watch both on Paramount+. Excited to see a fully healthy Tyler Adams working under Mauricio Pochettino, curious to see if Josh Sargent can be the player for the USMNT that he's been at Norwich, and I want to see if Weston McKennie's desired "nastiness" comes out tonight in the team. With meaningful games few and far between for the USMNT between now and the World Cup opener next June, this is an important test for Pochettino and the team. Lots of eyes on Jesse Marsch and Canada as well against a Mexico side that has not been impressive for a little while now. Japan booked their spot in the 2026 World Cup this morning with a 2-0 win over Bahrain. Takefusa Kubo scored a goal and assisted on the opener. They are the first to achieve qualification, joining the hosts for next summer's tournament. Australia moved a step closer with a 5-1 win over Indonesia this morning as well.4 upsets in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup last night as El Farolito, Little Rock Rangers, and Virginia Dream knocked off pro teams to advance. The Des Moines Menace, stacked with former pros, also won although it's hard to put it in the same group as the other amateur teams. Sacha Kljestan scored twice as the Menace defeated Sporting Kansas City II. One element of the USL promotion and relegation announcement yesterday that came out after the fact is that it is contingent on the first division professional league launching. Paul McDonough feels that it wouldn't be as "authentic" if it just includes the current USL Championship and USL League One setup. According to the USSF Pro League Standard, they'll need 12 teams in 3 time zones and in stadiums of at least 15,000 seats to start a first division professional league. I'm just hoping that the plans are more concerned with long-term sustainability than short-term buzz. A new 7v7 event is launching internationally for women's teams called the World Sevens Football. The idea is for it be like grand slam events throughout the year and with a $5 million purse for each event. The first is set for May in Portugal and will include top women's professional clubs. Will it include current women's professional players? UEFA Nations League quarterfinals today, Italy will be shorthanded against Germany at Mateo Retegui is out with a thigh injury.

The script for this year's MLS Cup serves up a gripping story, as founding clubs clash against each other in the final for the first time. On one side, the LA Galaxy, a former dynasty who fell on hard times, aim to regain their crown for an astonishing sixth time. On the other, the gutsy, gritty New York Red Bulls, who have been here since the beginning, try to make it to the mountaintop for the first time. In this episode, Taylor breaks down everything you need to know about the MLS Cup Final with fellow MLS Season Pass colleagues Diego Valeri and Sacha Kljestan. Plus, they check back in on how their preseason predictions held up. Offside With Taylor Twellman is a Major League Soccer podcast, produced by Apple TV and Rain Delay Media. There's only one regular-season matchday left in 2024. Time flies when you're chasing Messi across the country—or is that just Taylor? To celebrate the end of the season, Taylor sits down with two friends of the show—his broadcast partner Jake Zivin and MLS Season Pass analyst Sacha Kljestan. The three of them try to get each other into hot water while playing a game of true or false, including a debate over whether Messi should win MLS MVP. In soccer, 10 isn't just a number—it's a position. And arguably, it's the game's most storied position. The 10 is a team's creative force, the playmaker, the one who draws the crowds with goals, assists, and a little bit of magic. Messi, Pelé, Zidane, Marta, Maradona—all 10s. Around the world, the 10 is dying out, replaced with tactical systems made to grind out results. But there's at least one place where the 10 still thrives and thrills: Major League Soccer. On today's episode, Taylor investigates how and why the 10 has had a sustained influence on MLS. First, we hear the story of Marco Etcheverry, one of the league's first great 10s, who helped D.C. United become a dynasty in the early years of MLS. Then we hear from current standouts Evander, Hany Mukhtar, and Djordje Mihailovic about why they love being 10s in MLS. We also get analysis from The Athletic's Jeff Rueter and Sacha Kljestan of MLS Season Pass, who made the argument that MLS is the league of the 10 in Offside's 2024 season preview.Offside With Taylor Twellman is a Major League Soccer podcast, produced by Apple TV and Rain Delay Media. Sacha joins Randy, Danny & Brooke to talk about the firing of Bradley Carnell, why he thinks this is a case of Carnell being the victim of his own success, the firing coming off as harsh considering the 1st year success, not seeing a lot of tactical changes from Carnell in his time, why that criticism is so similar to ones that face the Red Bulls and teams of that style, leaning on the new coach bump for a big win over the Earthquakes and why the expectations from management doesn't match up with the talent level of the roster--especially offensively. S3E12 - For the Glory KC is back with the 77th episode of the show! We start this week with Sporting Kansas City and their utter collapse against the LA Galaxy. Sadly, it was a game they utterly dominated if not for the eight minutes of terror. You simply cannot give up three goals in eight minutes and expect to win. You also can't go up 2-0 and lose games. I do a deliriously short podcast in the middle of the night after the ups and downs of Saturday night. A little For the Glory KC after dark, if you will. The KC Current were around to lift our spirits right after Sporting KC crushed them. They found a way to win on the road against the defending Shield winners, the San Diego Wave. The Current feel like they are going to be really good this year. They did it without two more players, Hailie Mace and Debinha, who showed up on the injury report. Their replacements did quite well!
