When the NWSL was founded in 2012, four of the founding teams were former members of the WPS (Women's Professional Soccer) -- including the Boston Breakers. One Breakers player that had been with the team between 2009-2011, and rejoined the team in 2013 initial to coach, was Ashley Phillips , who ultimately ended up playing as well. Phillips had starred at Clemson University, then graduated at the awkward time in the sport when the best American female players didn't have a top flight domestic professional league to play in. That realization helped Phillips, who already had an interest in coaching, realize the need for options. During her time with the Breakers when they played in the WPS, she began coaching to help pay the bills. Eventually, she walked away from the game and became the head coach of the women's soccer team at Northeastern She joined Founding Futbol to share her story -- one that reflects how hard a generation of players had to fight to stay in the game when options were limited. When the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) folded in 2003, many believed the prospect of a sustainable top-flight women's professional league in America was undermined. The resulting league fragmentation made it difficult for our top US Women's National Team players to compete at the appropriate levels after college between national team camps. When the WPS (Women's Professional Soccer) was founded in 2009, there was once again hope. But, yet again, the league folded within three years. However, coming off the enthusiasm around the women's game in the 2011 World Cup and approaching what would become a gold medal run at the 2012 Olympics for the USWNT, US Soccer regrouped and tried again. The outcome was the establishment of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Leveraging lessons learned from the past, the league focused on creating a sustainable model first, then finding a way to grow from there. The first eight teams included instant success stories in Portland where the Thorns drew unexpected crowds and also won on the field. Cat Whitehill was the captain and later player-coach of the Boston Breakers -- a carryover club from the WPS -- in the team's first NWSL season. The long-time USWNT defensive stalwart joined Founding Futbol to talk about how her journey to both the USWNT and professional soccer, and how the NWSL finally created the league women's soccer needed. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Visit our website for more information: FoundingFutbol.com. 1983 Week 17 - Saturday, June 25, 1983. Attendance: 30,396. TV: ESPN. Fred Besana passed for 227 yards and a touchdown as the Oakland Invaders capitalized on blunders by the Boston Breakers to clinch the Pacific Division title. Boston, which got 122 yards rushing from halfback Richard Crump, crumbled from its own mistakes in the third period. The Invaders recovered a fumble on their own 48 and moved to the Breakers' 3-yard line with the help of three penalties. Ted Torosian scored from one-yard out on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving Oakland a 17-13 lead. Boston later had a touchdown nullified by a holding penalty and settled for a 24-yard field goal by Tim Mazzetti that closed the gap to 17-16 with 6:01 left to play.
1983 Week 13 - Sunday, May 29, 1983. Attendance: 15,668, TV: ABC. [NOTE: If you want to skip all the pregame analysis forward the audio to the 7:51 minute mark where the game begins] Boston's 21-17 victory over Philadelphia on a last-play tipped touchdown catch by Frank Lockett halted the Stars' eight-game winning streak and prevented them from winning the United States Football League's Atlantic Division title. Boston began its winning 65-yard drive with 1:50 to play. Johnnie Walton threw on all 12 plays, completing seven passes. On fourth-and-two at the Philadelphia 14 with four seconds to go, Walton threw to Charlie Smith in a crowd in the end zone. The ball bounced off Smith's hand and fluttered a few feet away to Lockett and his catch gave the Breakers, 8-5, their third consecutive victory and dropped the Stars to 11-2.
1983 Week 10 - Saturday, May 7, 1983. Attendance: 16,307, TV: ESPN. The game between Boston and LA took place on Saturday May. 7, 1983 at the LA Memorial Coliseum with attendance around 16,307 but you couldn't tell by watching video of the game. Week 10 of the inaugural season of the USFL saw the LA Express win that day by a close margin due to a game winning field goal by kicker Vince Abbott. The Los Angeles Express, 5-5, held onto a one game lead in the Pacific Division by tipping the Boston Breakers 23-20. Mike Rae, who replaced starter Tom Ramsey after he left the game with a bruise of the Achilles tendon, connected with Kris Haines for a 6-yard touchdown with 18 seconds remaining to seal the Los Angeles victory. Rae hit on nine of 12 passes for 104 yards and Haines caught six passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
1983 Week 9 - Sunday, May 1, 1983. Attendance: 10,971, TV: ABC. John Williams scored on a 1-yard dive with 1:23 left and a late Boston rally ended three yards short of the Michigan goal line, as the Panthers held on for a 28-24 United States Football League victory over the Breakers. The touchdown, which extended Michigan's winning streak to four, overshadowed a brilliant passing performance by Boston's Johnnie Walton, who completed 37 of 49 for three touchdowns and 422 yards. Williams' touchdown capped a 43-yard drive that followed a 17-yard punt by Boston's Dario Casarino.
1983 Week 6 - Sunday, April 10, 1983 Attendance: 7,984 TV: ABC [NOTE: If you want to skip all the pregame analysis forward the video to the 6:00 minute mark where kickoff starts. Also since this game was a blowout the network ABC with a few minutes left switched to the Birmingham vs Chicago game for bonus coverage. Unfortunately the video received didn't have all of the last minutes of the game]. Ted Torosion rambled for two touchdowns through the wind and rain after an interception and fumble recovery by Oakland as the Invaders snapped the Boston Breakers' four-game winning streak. Richard Crump put the Breakers, 4-2, ahead 7-0 early in the second quarter with a 1-yard plunge before Torosion got his first touchdown on a 2-yard run with 1:45 left in the period. Kevin Shea's extra point attempt was blocked, leaving Boston ahead 7-6. Torosion's touchdown climaxed an 80-yard march started by Derrick Martin's interception in the end zone of Johnnie Walton's pass. Crump's fumble on Boston's first play after the kickoff was recovered by Matt Elisara at the Boston 22-yard line. Five plays later Shea connected on a 28-yard field goal to give Oakland, 3-3, the lead for good, 9-7, as time ran out in the first half. QB Fred Besana throws his first interception in nearly a month, setting a USFL-record for most consecutive passes without a pick (135 attempts). The miscue proves to be of little consequence as the Invaders roll over the Boston Breakers, 26-7, at Nickerson Field.
I'm so jazzed to share this episode because I'm talking with a wicked old friend of mine; Walter Norton Jr - owner of the Institute of Performance & Fitness (IPF) which is a 10,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art facility in North Reading, MA. I've known Walt for over 30 years having met back in college at Boston University. He's someone who I admire and respect, and one of the people in my life who inspires me to be better. Walter has been a leader in the fitness industry for over 25 years and can stake a claim to having trained the most athletes in New England over the past few decades. He essentially started the youth training industry 20+ years ago as co-founder and owner of Mike Boyle's Strength & Conditioning (MBSC) - which became the largest and most well-known training facility in the U.S. In 2008, Walter left MBSC and he opened the Institute of Performance & Fitness (IPF) bringing his structured, consistent, straightforward, and high-octane coaching style to the middle school, high school, college and adult athletes and clients who train at IPF on a daily basis. He's also worked with multiple professional sports teams including the Boston Celtics 2004-2008, including their 2008 Championship year, the Boston Bruins, the New England Revolution, and the Boston Breakers. He's also trained the Boston University Men's Ice Hockey Team and the Harvard University Women's Ice Hockey Team. Walter has coached over 40 Olympic medalists across the 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 Games, has been a consultant for Nike, and he's worked with a bunch of celebrities from movies, television, music, and media including: 10 different movies with Ben Affleck, Jen Garner, Ryan Seacrest, Ciara, Casey Affleck and Matt Damon. Today on the Karen Kenney show, we're taking an up close and personal look at who Walter is and the incredible work he's doing to help people improve their lives. When you ask Walt what he does, he'll say, “I'm a coach, I work at a gym, we change behavior.” As you'll soon see and hear he's so much more than just a physical coach. He helps people grow personally, professionally, emotionally, mentally and I would add, in his own unique way, spiritually too. Once you listen to this conversation, you're going to see what I'm talking about. Walter is an incredible human being and extra bonus, you're also going to learn all about his amazing wife Liz Keady Norton, who is the Head Coach at Dartmouth Women's Hockey. Buckle up!! After college, she was picked 20th overall in the 2015 NWSL College Draft by the Boston Breakers, making her the first James Madison University player ever to be drafted by a NWSL team. In 2016, she played for the Portland Thorns. She also played overseas in Sweden for Sunnana SK and in Iceland for Breiðablik UBK. While playing professionally, Sam discovered meditation and it changed her life. Through her business “Meditation by Sam” {https://www.meditationbysam.com/sign-up-control-and-create )she teaches athletes how to gain control of their minds and their lives. In this episode Sam talks about: -her all-time favorite hacks for improving performance -how meditation helped her be confident playing against Tobin Heath -why visualizing is so powerful for athletes specifically -tips if you are a beginner meditator -common misconceptions about mindfulness And, she guides us through a quick meditation! You'll walk away from this episode feeling the zen.

In this episode, I interview firefighter, former professional soccer player, and farmer Keelin Winters Pattillo. Keelin is a force of nature. It appears as though everything she touches turns into a success. I believe Keelin accomplishes whatever she puts her mind to because she's one the most disciplined people I know. Keelin grew up living in a multitude of cities around the US, as her father was a NBA coach and was constantly on the move. Although her 5 siblings chose to dedicate themselves to basketball, the sport wasn't physical enough for Keelin. So, she chose to play soccer. Keelin went on to play at University of Portland, earning West Coast Conference Player of the Year. She won a goal medal in the U-20 World Cup. She was drafted 6th overall in the WPS to the Boston Breakers. She's played overseas with FFC Turbine Potsdam in Germany and the Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia. She played four years with Seattle Reign FC, winning two NWSL Shields, for finishing 1st in regular season play. She also earned a contract with full US national team. On most of those teams, she wore the captains armband, a testament to Keelin's supreme focus and leadership skills. In this episode we talk about, -why she chose to spend her honeymoon with her wife Paige living in a camper van while playing in Australia -what it was like having five siblings, a disciplinarian mom, and an NBA-coaching dad -how she's in even better shape than when she was playing professionally because of living on a farm -her decision to get dreadlocks in college and how they helped her find herself -the make-you or break-you pressure of US national team camp -why she retired even though she was in her prime -the advise her sports psychologist gave her that helped immensely when she was feeling burnt out And more! Megan Oyster joined Reign FC in 2018 as a result the unfortunate closure of the Boston Breakers. EJ Proctor was a three year starter with the blue devils, finishing in the fall of 2017. For a goalkeeper who's a little undersized, she never wavered in playing the position correctly and I think that really showed as Duke made deep trips in the national tournament each year with her in net. She would proceed to get drafted by the Utah Royals in 2018 and was set to backup Nicole Barnhart until the dissolution of the Boston Breakers bumped her to a practice player. EJ recaps her time at Duke as well as her short stint with the Royals, including the highs and lows of the whole process. Towards the back part of the interview, EJ and I talk about an article her mother, Kathy, wrote. It's a really wonderful and personal account of Kathy detailing her journey as a parent of a gay athlete and how she approached this new stage in her life. EJ discusses her reaction to reading it, all positive, of course, and to be honest, connecting with EJ over the idea of being proud of our parents was a real pleasant surprise for me.

It's the long lost file… Sorta. You see what happened was that I interview Abby Smith back in June, but then my dog ate the audio file. Thankfully, it was found and repaired, and so now we can move forth to release it on the latest Utah Royals FC Show. If you did not believe that story? Props to you for not falling for my ridiculous excuse. The truth is...my schedule was busier than I expected it this summer, and I just never had the opportunity to write the article I wanted which then would have led to releasing the interview via the Royals FC Show. This is, perhaps, my greatest failure of my soccer writing career. But, I believe, it is time to release the audio, even if I did not get around to write the article I wanted. In this one, we chat about how Smith started playing soccer, becoming a goalkeeper, coming to the NWSL, going to Boston, overcoming a knee injury (ruptured patella tendon), the Boston Breakers folding, being drafted by Utah in the Dispersal Draft, and playing with Nicole Barnhart and a solid defense. We also go through questions from the fans, including how much celebrating with the fans and meeting them is important to her. Smith was super kind and gracious, and I appreciated her time. I hope you enjoy listening to the interview.

In today's conversation, I interview former professional soccer player, broadcaster for the Major League Soccer and the National Women's Soccer League, and ACL Club founder, Jordan Angeli. Jordan tore her ACL twice while at Santa Clara. She recovered and entered the professional level in her best form, earning herself multiple US National team call-ups. During her first game of the second season with the Boston Breakers, Jordan tore her ACL for the third time. Somewhat unexpectedly, and three years later, Jordan opted to make another comeback playing with the Washington Spirit and Western New York Flash. In 2015, she opted to walk away from the game on her own terms. Jordan is now pursuing her passion on the other side of the lines, as a broadcaster. She also runs the ACL Club, a club that provides support and resources for athletes recovering from ACL tears. I highly recommend checking out her website and her podcast Show Your Scars, where she interviews professional athlete about their own acl stories. In our conversation Jordan talks about: -why she proudly trained with a U11 girls team during her comeback form her 3rd ACL tear -the goal she envisioned scoring in the World Cup with her fellow Colorado Rush Lindsey Horan, and how it came true in a different fashion -what it was like being a 6 year senior at Santa Clara -tools she used to help her manage her emotions while coming back from injury -the hike that spurred her decision to walk away from playing professional soccer -her go-to hairstyle for broadcasting And more. On this episode of Soccer 2 the MAX, Sean Garmer and Erik Watkins breakdown the first legs of the MLS Cup Playoffs Conference Finals. Does the 0-0 draw truly benefit Toronto FC? Could the Columbus Crew get the upset? And is there more shenanigans happening at Mapfre stadium with attendance? The 2-0 victory for the Seattle Sounders puts them in the driver's seat. However, it's not done yet for the Houston Dynamo. But how much are the losses of Roman Torres and Alberth Elis going to hurt? And are we setting up for a MLS Cup Final rematch? After that, the guys discuss a bunch of different topics. Real Salt Lake entering NWSL. The Boston Breakers potentially being in trouble. CONCACAF finally deciding on the Nations League starting in September 2018. Could CONMEBOL eventually join too? Plus, Caleb Porter out as Portland Timbers coach. An idea presented by Paul Tenorio about MLS cash trades, and more.

Since we last talked to you Orlando City has returned to its winning ways. The Lions closed out May with a win over D.C. United and started June with a hard-fought 0-0 draw vs. the Chicago Fire despite being down not one, but two men. We break down both games and give you our Man of the Match picks, as well as some thoughts on Sunday night’s referee, Ted Unkel. Plus, we’ve got wins to talk about for the Orlando Pride and OCB as well. Speaking of OCB, we’ve got midfielder Jordan Schweitzer with us from the young Lions and he was one of the more enjoyable player interviews we’ve had. Jordan weighed in on many topics about OCB, including what it was like to play with boats and trains going by in Pittsburgh on Saturday night. He also was brave enough to withstand our rapid fire segment. We answered your questions from Twitter (use #AskTMLPC and hit us up with a tweet) and most of them were about officiating. Go figure. We also discussed the USMNT, the U.S. U-20s, and much more in this supersized edition of the PawedCast. Here’s how it went down: 0:12- Orlando City picked up a win and a very controversial draw since we last met. Here’s how those results happened and our Man of the Match picks. Plus, another bad night for Ted Unkel. 37:30- The Pride blanked the Boston Breakers and finally earned a penalty. Here’s how a rainy win over Boston happened and OCB fell behind early but came back on goals by Hadji Barry and Zach Ellis-Hayden! 49:02- Jordan Schweitzer talks about coming over from Seattle Sounders 2, playing for Anthony Pulis and the mindset of a reserve team player, the season so far, and some other fun topics. 1:12:43- It’s time to delve into the mailbag. Professional soccer player, Katherine Reynolds has played in 79 out of the 86 National Women's Soccer League matches. Just days before the beginning of the season, she was unexpectedly cut from the team. Katherine ended up getting picked up by the the Philadelphia Union. That season, she seldom saw the field, and considers that year one of the most challenging ones of her life. But, Katherine is someone who prides herself on working hard, and the following year, her career took off. Katherine has played every minute of every game in multiple seasons. It's incredible feat just to stay injury-free at the professional level, and testament to her reliable, consistent play. In our conversation, we talk about the responsibility that comes with being the oldest of four sisters, how she became an 8 time state champion in track by her sophomore year of high school and then decided to quit, the crazy story on how she very-last-minute got recruited by her dream school Santa Clara University, how she deals with the stress of playing professionally, her recent engagement and what she's looking for in a wedding dress. NWSL Season Preview looking at the Boston Breakers
Fellow defunct pro sports enthusiast (Fun While It Lasted) and former Boston Breakers General Manager, Andy Crossley, joins Tim Hanlon to discuss his rollicking ride on the Women’s Professional Soccer league roller coaster in the late 2000s, and why the second major attempt at professionalizing the women’s game in the U.S. fell apart after just three seasons. Crossley recounts why Harvard’s archaic on-campus football stadium became the oddly natural choice for Breakers home games, the moment when he first recognized the WPS business model was doomed, how an Internet telephone entrepreneur’s obsession with the U.S. Women’s National team hastened the league’s demise, and why he doesn’t expect any Christmas cards from Hope Solo anytime soon.
Joining 2 Up Front today is Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard and Orlando Pride head coach Tom Sermanni.

The new coach came in pretty much how the old coach went out. Bobby Murphy's first match in charge as interim coach resulted in a 0-0 home draw against the Houston Dynamo -- the club's ninth tie of the 2016 MLS season. We've got a rewind of the match, a recap of Orlando Pride's dramatic 2-1 win over the Boston Breakers, and OCB's result in Rochester. We also have a bit more on Adrian Heath's firing. We're also delighted to welcome Orlando City Academy Director David Longwell, who has a lot to tell us about how he's building the club's academy, what makes a good development program, and where he sees the future Lions coming from. David was a great interview and we're glad we could finally fit into his very busy schedule. And no PawedCast would be complete without our key match-ups and score predictions. We've got two games to look ahead to this week, so there's double the chance we'll be wrong. Here's how the show went: 0:13- Adrian Heath's firing after a few days' reflection, the Lions and Dynamo, Pride-Breakers, OCB-Rhinos, and more. 31:19- David Longwell jumps on with his thoughts on what lies ahead for Orlando City's development academy. 51:02- Our key match-ups and score predictions for this week's road matches against the New York Red Bulls and Vancouver Whitecaps.
