Get ready to dive into the real life of coaching! This week, we're chatting with our incredible coaching squad about what it's really like to transition from former cheerleaders to cheer coaches.
In this episode of The Coaching Life, Chris and Pat talk about the Ohio State Buckeyes' National Championship and uncover a critical aspect of sports that often goes unnoticed: the disconnect between fans' perceptions of the player-coach relationship and the reality behind the scenes. From social media memes, viral locker room moments, to sideline interactions, they discuss why fans may romanticize or misinterpret these relationships and how the media and "FANaticism" shapes our understanding of why a coach is or isn't successful. Whether you're a Buckeyes fan or just someone fascinated by the nuance of sports, this episode offers a perspective on the complexities of coaching and the importance of building authentic connections with players. Riley explains how he fell in love with the sport after watching Arthur Ashe play, finding his footing as a coach, and how he developed successful partnerships with players such as Pam Shriver & Lisa Raymond as he coached them. Willie Anderson is a former Ireland rugby captain from a Protestant, Unionist background. Growing up in county Tyrone, marching on the 12th of July, Gaelic Games wasn't the jumper that fitted best. Life changes. Arrest in Argentina, threat of execution, before playing rugby in communist Romania changed his outlook on the place he calls home. In this podcast we hear the thoughts from a different background. Can the GAA evolve to attract more Unionists? Should they? Willie Anderson played Gaelic football, his son Thomas also played. Thomas also played professional rugby for Ulster, Connacht and Ireland, winning an U20 Grand Slam. He sent a very powerful letter years later. There's a lot more. A United Ireland and challenges the debate provides for sports and society. What does Willie think? The former Irish captain battled alcohol addiction. He doesn't drink anymore. He was also involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of a young boy. It's been a life of challenges- but every single fence has been climbed. Willie has played Gaelic Games, helped clubs with fundraisers, and has aided various clubs and counties throughout the years at the highest level- including Armagh. The Cathal O'Rourke story is probably the best line in the podcast- and there are many! Willie looks to the future- "Tell your children you love them everyday, because you don't know when the day will arrive" The sport needs winners and losers, even at underage. He doesn't miss! It's a different podcast, but a unique insight into Gaelic Games from one of the finest people we've ever had on the show. Willie Anderson is a remarkable man, with a remarkable family. We hope you enjoy. PS- his son Jonathan is one of the globes best fashion designers. Rihanna's outfit at the Superbowl half-time show? Beyonce? LeBron James? PPS- He's now working with James Bond. What a man, what a family!
It took Brian Gillam nearly 20 years to realize that perhaps his coaching approach had room for adjustment. His epiphany came at a High Performance conference and, since then, his readings about leadership, ecological approaches, constraints, etc. have made him reconsider what coaching the game could be about. As Hockey Eastern Ontario's (HEO) coaching development coordinator, he's also in a position to influence others into seeing coaching in a different light. He has created a YouTube series for HEO about skill acquisition, interviews with some of the key figures in the field. All of which, however, leads to one key question: then what?HEO's YouTube channel - Click on The Skill Acquisition Serieshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIc6D9wLXpCkGsA2ETjpkhgA theory of change for Canadian Sport: Dorothy Paul on culture changehttps://sirc.ca/blog/dorothy-paul-on-culture-change/Contact: richard(at)grassrootsminorhockey.comTwitter:Richard - @berky544

“In general, we've added about 30 years to our life expectancy, and our mindsets tend to think, Oh, I'm going to be older, longer. We tack those on to the end. But that is not how we experience the added years and decades in our life. What's happened is the middle part of life has expanded,” explains Barbara Waxman, coach, life stage expert, gerontologist, and author. Gerontology is the study of adult development and aging. And today, Barbara talks about middlescence and the five rules for authenticity. The human life expectancy has increased by about 30 years overall and it is time to change the collective mindset that has typically viewed aging in a negative light. Instead of worrying about the myth of the midlife crisis or planning for retirement at 65, it is time to shift toward planning for how you can maintain your health and what career paths you can take to earn money as an older adult. Middlescence is a life stage that is often overlooked but that comes with many changes, both internal and external, and can be a great time to re-evaluate your life. It is never too late to figure out who you want to be when you grow up and start living authentically. To be an authentic leader you must know your own story. When you are clear on who you are and how you came to be, you can really take ownership of that story of your life. Instead of viewing middle or old age as the end of the road, start to view it as the first step of a new journey and focus on how you are going to take those next steps forward. This will help you to be the most authentic leader you can be. Quotes: “Being authentic is actually taking the time to know your own story.” (5:43-5:48 | Barbara) “In general, we've added about 30 years to our life expectancy, and our mindsets tend to think, ‘Oh, I'm going to be older, longer.' But that is not how we experience the added years and decades in our life. What's happened is the middle part of life has expanded.” (21:10-21:36 | Barbara) “We're not starting a downhill slope. We're sort of at the height saying, ‘okay, what's the next mountain? How do I want to get there?'” (23:37-23:46 | Barbara) “Companies are recognizing that they don't have enough people in the pipeline. We need to maintain people at a high level who can continue to work longer and have them mentor younger people, so that there's consistency of leadership throughout.” (26:45-26:59 | Barbara) “Oftentimes people think their most valuable currency is what they've got in the bank, or their contacts, their social networks, and that is part of it. But really, your currency is your energy.” (27:49-28:03 | Barbara) “Life is not a linear path. It's a journey and an ever unfolding story. The no-gap principle is something I have been consciously implementing into my everyday life. The gap is the time in between our thought of doing something, and the actual act of doing it. The smaller our gap, the better our learning process is no matter the subject. Learning is only effective if you apply what you learn. "No gap," is a principle I learned from philosopher Bruce Lee. Last year I was totally delighted to appear on a podcast called The Coach's Compass, giving me an opportunity to dive deep into all things coaching with host Clark Luby.In the episode, Clark - a listener to The Coach's Journey - turns my favourite starter question back on me by asking me to recall when I first came across coaching, and that takes me back to a crucial juncture in my life and career. From there, we talk through the support structures and containers that helped me through early coaching challenges such as finding clients and talking about money, and I offer up some practical tools that can help you to establish the kind of coach you really want to be, factoring in the styles of coaching you admire and personalities you aspire to emulate. We also explore the importance of Rich Litvin's work to the evolution of coaching and to my own practice, and I share one of the exercises he taught me that led me to do some of my best work.In this episode, we talk about:The shift that happens after your first attempt at being an adultMaking the process of your work something that you really enjoyBeing a player in the game of your businessThe point at which coaching businesses start to carry themselves forwardHow to stay authentic while taking influence from other coachesWhy I think it's okay to steal from people*We also talk about the best times to break the rules of coaching, or the rules of anything for that matter! To hear other episodes of the Coach's Compass Podcast, visit https://thecoachscompass.libsyn.com/For information about my wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswale.com, and to buy my book, click here.Join the WBECS Free Pre-Summit: https://share.coaching.com/6d3qN2Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community. This conversation is based on an article written by Coach Mike Deegan of Dennison University. Coach Deegan had planned to join us on this episode but we had some technical difficulties connecting with him. Still, his points were made through the article and we hope to get him on The Coaching Life again soon. If you would like to listen to a previous episode where we talked with Coach Deegan about his book, Let It Rip, you can hear him on Episode 49.
By the time this episode airs it might not be "breaking" news, but it is BIG news nonetheless. Chris Stewart conducts an interview with a very special "guest."

We are grateful for you and the fact that you take time to listen to our podcast. We hope that The Coaching Life has been a blessing.

In this episode, Tabitha shares how everything in her life seemed to be going great. Her family was great, she had a happy marriage, happy kids, and just went on an annual family vacation to bring in the new year. It was going to be a fantastic 2017, until the storm hit. Both her son and daughter faced major health issues and she went through some extremely scary times as a parent. Slowly, her life was unraveling piece by piece. After her husband received a job transfer where he would be able to be more present in the home - no more week on week off - they made the decision to move. Tabitha moved away from all of her friends and family, her daughter and son were off to school full time and she was feeling a little bit lost. Tabitha talks about how the storm led her to where she is today - helping others as a life coach. Tabitha Astalos is a lead coach at Lux Empowerment. Her mission is to empower women to take inspired action by aligning their inner desires so they live a luxurious life of abundance, confidence, happiness and fulfillment.Follow Tabitha on InstagramFind Lux Empowerment Facebook group hereFollow Candace on Instagram
