With the success of Ted Lasso, as well as the growing popularity of soccer documentaries and broader program on streaming services, Hollywood began to seen an opportunity to connect with soccer. In 2020, two different initiatives marked the Hollywoodization of soccer in different ways. Angel CIty FC, a Los Angeles expansion team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) was announced with a star-studded, celebrity-laden ownership group. And two world famous actors -- Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds -- bought Wrexham AFC with the intent to create a documentary about the club geared towards an American audience. The two evens happened within just a few months of each others. And while they were very different in effect, they shared a deep connection to LA and Hollywood based on actor and actress based ownership. Both Angel City and Wrexham generated significant publicity as a result. Which allowed both teams to draw new and different fans into the game.Angel City also added a slew of former USWNT players to its ownership group -- in addition to entrepreneurs and actress..Saskia Webber was one of the players in that group and she returned to the show to talk about owning an NWSL team in LA. She shares how the opportunity came about. What it was like helping get it off the ground. How the former player contribute to the club's success, and more. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America.Visit our website for more information: FoundingFutbol.com. After years of growth, the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) hit two consecutive bumps in the road. The first it shared with the rest of the professional sports world -- the COVID pandemic. But, then after the 2021 season, scandal rocked the league and left everyone concerned that it would potentially fold. However, Marla Messing came in as interim CEO and stabilized the league. Not only did it find a way to recover from the challenges, but hit a new period of growth -- ratifying the league's first Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), adding key sponsors and expanding into multiple new cities over the coming years. The NWSL's rebirth, thanks in large part by the short tenure of Messing, launched the league into a new phase of growth that has elevated women's professional soccer to new heights. She joined the shows to talk about the critical window in the league's history, how she approached a job that came about so abruptly and had so many challenges, and so much more. While the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) has emerged as the best women's professional soccer league in the world, it took years to achieve that status, striving first for stability. Early successes, such as the fan support for the Portland Thorns and on-field performance of FC Kansas City, gave the nascent league showcase moments, players and teams. FC Kansas City rostered the likes of Becky Sauerbrunn and Lauren Holliday of US Women's National Team, and combined them with young talents like Erika Tymrak. Meanwhile, players like Leigh Ann Brown had significant professional experience in the then defunct WPS (Women's Professional Soccer), and made FC Kansas an even more formidable force. The team had the league's second-best record in year one, then won back-to-back championships in years two and three. Brown joined Founding Futbol to talk about her journey to the NWSL, how persistence landed her on the FC Kansas City roster, why she ultimately left the game after three successful season in the league, and so much more. When the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) folded in 2003, many believed the prospect of a sustainable top-flight women's professional league in America was undermined. The resulting league fragmentation made it difficult for our top US Women's National Team players to compete at the appropriate levels after college between national team camps. When the WPS (Women's Professional Soccer) was founded in 2009, there was once again hope. But, yet again, the league folded within three years. However, coming off the enthusiasm around the women's game in the 2011 World Cup and approaching what would become a gold medal run at the 2012 Olympics for the USWNT, US Soccer regrouped and tried again. The outcome was the establishment of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Leveraging lessons learned from the past, the league focused on creating a sustainable model first, then finding a way to grow from there. The first eight teams included instant success stories in Portland where the Thorns drew unexpected crowds and also won on the field. Cat Whitehill was the captain and later player-coach of the Boston Breakers -- a carryover club from the WPS -- in the team's first NWSL season. The long-time USWNT defensive stalwart joined Founding Futbol to talk about how her journey to both the USWNT and professional soccer, and how the NWSL finally created the league women's soccer needed. Tom Sermanni is one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of world women's soccer. Currently in his third (though, interim) stint as the head coach of the Australian Women's National Team, Sermanni also coached the US Women's National Team from 2013-2014 and then the Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). In both settings, Alex Morgan was the team's star. When Sermanni entered the USWNT picture in 2013, Morgan was at the top of her game having starred at the 2012 Olympics the Americans won, and receiving numerous awards and accolades. In Orlando, Morgan was one of the faces of the NWSL and the star used to market the expansion Pride. It's fair to say, Sermanni had a chance to know Morgan at two unique points in her career. He joined Founding Futbol to share his memories of coaching Morgan both on the USWNT and when she was the face of the NWSL during her time on the Pride. Debinha (Deb) and Bia Zaneratto are two of the greatest soccer legends in the game. Both grew up playing with the boys, and in Deb's case often playing with whatever the neighborhood kids could grab that resembled a ball. Bia had her first opportunity to play with girls at 13. In this conversation we sit down with Deb and Bia together, as they both play for the Kansas City Current in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). This conversation is co-hosted by Maé-Bérénice Méité (2x Olympian and 6X National Figure Skating Champ, France) and conducted in Portuguese with English translation courtesy of Ana Ramos. If you don't know these two superstars, you should. Deb has played for Brazil in 2X FIFA World Cups, 2X Olympics, and has 130+ caps for her country. In the NWSL, she's wracked up 10,000+ minutes played, and is one of the most decorated players in the league (2x NWSL championships, 3x NWSL shields and multiple MVP titles). Bia skyrocketed onto the world stage at 14, and has since been a veteran of 4X FIFA World Cups (2011, 2015, 2019, 2023) and 2X Olympics. Both of them are on a mission to make the future of women's sports brighter and better than it was for them. In today's conversation we discuss motivation, overcoming challenges/stereotypes, and their hopes for the future of women's sports. When asked about her early motivation, Deb shares, "The boys wouldn't let me play soccer with them, so I wanted to show them there was no reason I couldn't play with them." Similarly, Bia offers, "I wanted to show the boys that I was just as capable. That a woman's place is wherever she wants.” As both look to the future, they share a commitment to increasing opportunities and support for women and girls in Brazil. Tune in to hear how! Twenty-five years later than expected and following several false starts, women's professional soccer looks to finally be planting long-term roots. And at the center of it all is one of the icons of a US championship team. Brandi Chastain, whose electrifying penalty kick in front of more than 90,000 screaming fans at the Rose Bowl sealed the 1999 Women's World Cup, is a co-owner of Bay FC, the latest franchise to join the fast-growing National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). So what's the difference with this league, this time, after two earlier failures? Solid investment for the long haul.  The moment seems to have arrived for women's soccer, as it has for the broader profile of women in American sports. Bay FC was taking the field this spring just as the women's edition of NCAA March Madness kept breaking its own records, driven by outsized performances and personalities like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. This new era of attention and support for women's sports hasn't seen its equal since Chastain's famous, jersey-shedding celebration of her World Cup victory. That team—and its successors—produced stars that broke through into the broader public consciousness: Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe among them. But all that excitement needed money to sustain it. These days, Chastain has linked up with Sixth Street Partners, a global investment firm that's developed a business case for women's sports.  Now, Chastain says, it's up to her and her fellow owners to leverage not just the money, but the expertise. That means blending her experience as a World Cup winner, Olympic gold medalist and coach with the analytics generated across reams of Sixth Street spreadsheets to produce a winning team.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I want you to close your eyes for a moment. Zoom out on your life. Look at it from a birds'-eye view. What do you see? Where are you living with intention and purpose? Where are you living out of alignment? In those places where you're living in your truth, what kind of impact are you making on the people and things around you? In the areas where you're not in alignment, what's the impact there? What you may observe is that where you are living with intention and purpose, you are making a much more meaningful impact on the world around you. And where you're living out of alignment, you may be making smaller waves and/or potentially even a negative impact. Our guest today, Jess Smith, lives on purpose. In every aspect of life. A major scandal has just erupted in women's soccer, one of the world's fastest growing sports. An in-depth, independent investigation of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) found extensive emotional abuse and sexual misconduct by coaches. "Abuse in the NWSL is rooted in a deeper culture in women's soccer, beginning in youth leagues, that normalizes verbally abusive coaching and blurs boundaries between coaches and players," wrote former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Q. Yates in her scathing report. The report is deeply disturbing and hopefully will trigger significant change urgently needed to protect female soccer players from abusers and predators.    In the meantime, the sport and fan base continue to grow, as evidenced by the Corktown Women's Football Club, Detroit's first women's professional soccer team, preparing to kick off its inaugural season in May 2023. I talk with Owner and Coach Aaron Roy and Center Midfielder Lauren Bos.

Evidence has been building for the seismic shift among Hispanics for months. In May, a nationwide poll by Quinnipiac showed President Biden’s approval rating among Hispanics at 26% as opposed to the 2020 presidential election, when he secured two-thirds of the Hispanic vote. “Biden is less popular among Hispanics than any other demographic, including age and gender,” Fox News noted of the poll’s results. A paltry 27% of Hispanics approved of Biden’s economic policies, a percentage even lower than the 32% of Americans nationwide. Hispanics ranked inflation as the most pressing issue concerning them. In March, Axios reported that their poll showed inflation had replaced COVID as the major source of concern among Hispanics. “Getting prices under control is very clearly the number one priority for the majority of Hispanics and Latinos, and it underscores the challenges Biden is facing now,” Ipsos pollster Chris Jackson acknowledged. “There’s not really a single issue that’s super-dominant, but we’re seeing a shift from a focus on COVID and COVID-related issues much more to inflation, cost pressures, supply chain breakdowns.” For the Republicans to come anywhere near parity with Democrats is a stunning turn in the recent political fabric of the United States. In 2016, Republican nominee Donald Trump won 29% of the Hispanic vote while Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton won 65% of the Hispanic vote; in 2012, Republican nominee Mitt Romney won 27% of the vote while Barack Obama won 71% of the vote. In 2008, 67% of Hispanics voted for Barack Obama and Joe Biden; only 31% voted for Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin. According to Latino USA, in 2004 the Republican nominee, George W. Bush, reached the highwater mark for his party since 1980, garnering 40% of the vote, but even then his opponent John Kerry secured 58% of the vote. The Republican presidential candidate received 35% of the Hispanic vote in 2000, 21% in 1996, 25% in 1992, 30% in 1988, 37% in 1984, and 35% in 1980. https://thepostmillennial.com/biden-made-false-claims-that-inflation-reduction-act-will-only-raise-taxes-on-those-making-400-000-report?utm_campaign=64487 Biden made false claims that Inflation Reduction Act will only raise taxes on those making $400,000+: report President Biden has claimed that the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will not raise taxes on individuals making less than $400,000 per year, but according to data released by Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee, the President's claims are false and misleading, Daily Wire reports. "The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will lower health care costs for millions of Americans. And, for the first time in a long time, make the largest corporations pay their fair share without any new taxes on people making under $400,000 a year," Biden claimed in a tweet on Sunday. Data conducted by the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) shows that taxes will increase for everyone except those making between $10,000 and $30,000 per year, Daily Wire reports. According to the JCT data reported by the outlet, "those making under $10,000 will see a .3% increase in their federal taxes; those making between $30,000 and $75,000 will see a .1% increase; those making between $75,000 and $100,000 a .2% increase; those making between $100,000 and $500,000 a .3% increase; those making between $500,000 and $1,000,000 a .5% increase; and those making over $1,000,000 a year will see a .6% increase." After analyzing the new bill, Penn Wharton researchers released a study that found that the Inflation Reduction Act will cause inflation to increase until at least 2024, and GDP won't see an increase until 2050. Republican Senator John Cornyn (Texas) slammed President Biden's tweet on Sunday and says it puts hardworking taxpayers under an even tighter microscope. "It will subsidize the wealthy at the expense of working families, raise taxes on workers making as little as $10K a year, and unleash an army of IRS agents on taxpayers," Cornyn wrote. "Oh, and it won't reduce inflation anytime soon." https://www.theepochtimes.com/oregonians-to-vote-on-nations-strictest-gun-control-measure_4633649.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport Oregonians to Vote on Gun Control Measure Opponent Calls ‘Strictest’ in the Nation Oregonians will soon vote on a ballot measure that opponents say could virtually end the legal sale of firearms in the state, making it one of the “strictest gun-control measures ever proposed in the nation,” according to Leonard Williamson, an explanatory committee member who opposes the measure. If voters approve Measure 114, the “Changes to Gun Ownership and Purchase Requirements Initiative,” a permit would be required to obtain any firearm, magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds would be outlawed, some commonly used pump shotguns would be banned because they can exceed the 10 round limit, and State Police would be required to maintain a searchable public database of all permit applications. Arguments on both sides of the issue began in earnest on July 26 as a five-person committee— comprising two members who helped to draft and promote the citizen-driven ballot measure, another who supports it, and two who oppose it—met to write the 500-word Explanatory Statement that will appear in the voters’ guide this fall. The committee got off to a contentious start as the only statement considered had been provided by proponents. Those opposing the measure called their language “misleading.” The measure would enact a law requiring a permit issued by a local law enforcement agency to purchase any firearm. Applicants would have to pay a fee, be fingerprinted, complete safety training, and pass a criminal background check. In addition, the applicant must complete a hands-on demonstration of basic firearms handling to qualify. “In order to obtain the permit, an applicant would have to show up with a firearm to demonstrate the ability to load, fire, unload, and store the firearm,” Williamson, an Oregon trial attorney specializing in firearms law, told The Epoch Times. “But you can’t get a firearm without the permit. And under Oregon’s highly restrictive gun storage laws, no one can legally loan a firearm to another. That creates an impassable barrier.” Opponents claim that the permit and training programs also create an unfunded mandate with no enforcement measures. The measure does not estimate the cost or analyze its impact on small local police departments. The Oregon State Sheriff’s Association has estimated that even if a person could somehow complete the required training, the permitting process could cost sheriffs almost $40 million annually. But nothing in the measure provides any funding, and the fees included would not come close to covering the costs. The German government will prevent Hanover’s municipal buildings from using heating that exceeds a temperature of 68F. Additionally, the city has also banned mobile air conditioning units and fan heaters as the energy crisis looms. The city’s residents will also need to adapt by taking cold showers at city-run facilities. Hanover will also shut off hot water in public buildings, swimming pools, and gyms. Hanover Mayor and Green party member Belit Onay said, “The situation is unpredictable.” “Every kilowatt hour counts, and protecting critical infrastructure has to be a priority,” Onay said. “We are facing hard times due to the Russian aggression on Ukraine.” “And as we see that there’s a looming gas shortage, this is a major challenge for municipalities,” he added. “I think everyone, not only the municipalities — the federal government also, and also every single person in Germany — is needed for this.” “Everyone has to save energy as much as possible so we can get through the winter,” Onsay said. “Otherwise … in December or January, we will have much bigger problems than lighting or the showers.” The energy shutdown is not just happening in Hanover Last week, the German city of Munich announced plans to shut off spotlights on its town hall. According to reports, warm water was also shut off in the city’s municipal offices. Meanwhile, fountains in Germany’s third-largest city are to be shut off at night. In Nuremberg, three of its four public indoor swimming pools were also closed. The Financial Times reported: Vonovia, the country’s largest residential landlord, said it would lower the temperature of its tenants’ gas central heating to 17C (62F) between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. A housing association in the Saxon town of Dippoldiswalde, near the Czech border, went a step further this week, saying it was rationing hot water supply to tenants. From now on, they can only take hot showers between 4 a.m. – 8 a.m., 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. The district of Lahn-Dill also shut off hot water in its 86 schools and 60 gyms until mid-September. Last week, Berlin’s senate voted to switch off lighting that illuminates 200 buildings, monuments, and landmarks in the German capital to save energy. Before we wrap up for today’s news, I gotta get my sports in there! https://www.breitbart.com/sports/2022/07/31/christian-nwsl-player-misses-game-over-refusal-to-wear-pride-jersey/ Christian NWSL Player Misses Game Over Refusal to Wear Pride Jersey A player for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) chose to miss a game on Friday night instead of wearing the “Pride” jersey her team was scheduled to wear. Jaelene Daniels, a Christian and defender for the Carolina Courage, cited her commitment to faith when explaining her decision to miss the game due to the pride-themed jerseys. “I remain committed to my faith and my desire for people to know that my love for them isn’t based on their belief system or sexuality,” she wrote on social media. “I pray and firmly believe that my teammates know how much I cherish them, respect them, and love them.” The Courage said they were “disappointed” by Daniels’s decision. “Jaelene will not be rostered tonight as she has made the decision to not wear our Pride jersey,” the team said via ESPN. “While we’re disappointed with her choice, we respect her right to make that decision for herself. “We’re excited to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community with our fans, players and staff tonight and look forward to hosting our first ever Pride Festival before kickoff.” This is not the first time Daniels has chosen principle over career enhancement. In 2017, the defender turned down an offer to play for the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) due to that team’s plan to wear pride-themed jerseys. Good on you Jaelene, good on you. What A Week   (9/27- 10/3)Intro: (Cue intro music) Hey everyone, welcome back to What a week!, I'm your host, Olivia Lee, here to deliver your weekly dose of the news. Let's get started! In Local News:  https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2021/09/downtown-portland-clean-safe-contract-renewed-for-5-years.htmlPortland city commissioners voted this past Wednesday to allow the Downtown and Old Town enhanced service district to continue to exist with a new five-year, $25 million Clean & Safe contract to provide extra security and trash removal within the district. The deal means the city will collect fees from downtown property owners to pay for armed and unarmed security guards, additional Portland Police Bureau officers, sidewalk cleaning, holiday lights, a staff position at the district attorney's office, economic development, lobbying, and administration costs. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said in a statement that he believes the new contract is a step in the right direction, paving the way for continued conversation. Some changes made from the previous contract include new uniforms for security guards that will make them distinguishable from police officers, a 25% limit on the number of guards who can be armed, and a three-person mental health team that will join the guards. Additional transparency measures will also be required including increased reporting of Clean & Safe activities and spending to the city. In-state news: https://katu.com/news/local/decrease-in-oregon-covid-hospitalizations-promising-news-gov-brown-saysIt looks like COVID-19 hospitalizations are declining across Oregon, a trend Governor Kate Brown called "promising news" during a press conference discussing the virus this past Tuesday. As of this past Tuesday, there were 822 Oregonians in the hospital with COVID-19, which is 44 less than there were on Monday. That number is also down from a total of 944 one week ago (Sept. 21), and more than 1,100 were hospitalized a month ago. Health officials say there are 237 COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit, and there's an 8% availability of open ICU beds statewide. The Oregon Health Authority reported 1,658 new confirmed and presumptive cases of the virus this past Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 326,191 since the pandemic began. As of Tuesday, 2,731,271 people have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 2,501,554 have completed a vaccine series.  In National News: https://www.npr.org/2021/10/03/1042846846/a-massive-oil-spill-in-the-pacific-ocean-has-reached-the-southern-california-coaMore than 120,000 gallons of oil that spilled into the Pacific Ocean has reached the Southern California coastline, closing parts of the beach as officials warn residents to stay away from the slick. Federal, state, and local agencies are still racing to determine the cause of the spill, which is at least 13 square miles in size. They are also working on developing ways to mitigate the spill's ecological impact.  Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said in a statement on Saturday quote,  "The ramifications will extend further than the visible oil and odor that our residents are dealing with at the moment. The impact to the environment is irreversible. We must identify the cause of the spill, and for the greater good of our cities, beaches, and coastal ecological habitat we need to understand how to prevent these incidences moving forward” end quote. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, as of this past Saturday, the cause of the spill remains under investigation.  In International News:  https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-58729781Australia's Daintree - the world's oldest tropical rainforest - has been returned to its Aboriginal owners in a historic deal. The Eastern Kuku Yalanji people will now manage the national park with Queensland's state government. The Daintree borders the Great Barrier Reef and is one of Australia's top tourism drawcards. It is famed for its ancient ecosystem and rugged, natural beauty which includes forest vistas, wild rivers, waterfalls, gorges, and white sandy beaches. The deal also includes other Queensland national parks including Cedar Bay (Ngalba Bulal), Black Mountain (Kalkajaka), and Hope Islands, a combined area of over 160,000 hectares. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-58780258Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense said on Saturday night, that it reported a record number of incursions by Chinese warplanes into its air defense identification zone (ADIZ) for the second day in a row. The US Federal Aviation Administration defines an ADIZ as "a designated area of airspace over land or water within which a country requires the immediate and positive identification, location and air traffic control of aircraft in the interest of the country's national security."   The self-governing island said a total of 39 Chinese military aircraft entered the ADIZ on Saturday, one more than the 38 planes it spotted this past Friday. The 38 and 39 planes respectively are the highest number of incursions Taiwan has reported in a day since it began publicly reporting such activities last year. The incursions do not violate Taiwan's airspace, which extends 12 nautical miles from its coast but does pose a concern for the future of the already unstable diplomatic relations between China and Taiwan. The US state department responded to this in a statement saying quote, "The United States is very concerned by... China's provocative military activity near Taiwan, which is destabilizing, risks miscalculations and undermines regional peace and stability," end quote.  Lastly let's take a look into the world of sports: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/sports/national-women-s-soccer-league-calls-upcoming-weekend-games-amid-n1280590This past Friday, the  National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) postponed all of its upcoming weekend matches and its commissioner resigned, following allegations of sexual misconduct against a former coach. North Carolina Courage Coach Paul Riley was fired Thursday after a report in The Athletic publication detailed allegations made by players on teams that Riley has coached since 2010. The news also comes after the players' union on Thursday called for an end to “systemic abuse plaguing the NWSL." NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird, who earlier Friday apologized to players and staff, had submitted her resignation by Friday night, the league said. Some of the game's most iconic players, such as U.S. stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, have lashed out at league leadership for not doing more to prevent the alleged abuse.  Closing:  Well that wraps up What a Week! Stay safe and see you guys next week.
