Great Ideas
It costs more than homeland security, housing, and justice combined. We never talk about it.

An issue we never talk about -- and don't want to -- is how the federal government collects tax revenue. We have a voluntary tax compliance system in America, and it turns out that there are a lot of folks who cut corners or outright cheat the system when it comes to paying their taxes. This is a big problem. America loses $600 billion dollars a year in unpaid taxes that are owed under the law. $163 billion of those dollars come from the very richest 1% of us. That segment from the richest Americans is more than we spend on housing, homeland security, and the Department of Justice …combined. And the total that we are losing from all that tax cheating is almost as much as we pay for Defense. But of course the solution it's not something that most Americans like to think about or find particularly appealing. 52% of Americans have an unfavorable view of the IRS. And let's face it, no one enjoys the process of paying their taxes or likes to think about ways to give the IRS more teeth. But that is exactly the direction the Democrats have been trying to suggest going in the Build Back Better bill. The mere suggestion has opened up a conversation about why this issue needs more attention and what we can do about it. Our guest Seth Hanlon is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. He has testified before Congress, and his work has been cited in the Financial Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and other publications. He has been featured in CNBC, NPR, C-SPAN and other outlets to discuss tax issues.

This week, Joshua Holland kicks off the show with an important correction to some lazy journalism about inflation--and to the destructive conventional wisdom that it is fuelling. Then we are joined by Seth Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and former advisor to Barack Obama, to discuss the $3.5 trillion infrastructure and jobs framework that Senate Democrats agreed to this week. It is, as Joe Biden said of Obamacare, a big f**king deal. Finally, we speak with journalist Kim Kelly about a major strike that has been going on for almost four months in Alabama that has gotten virtually no coverage in the national media. Kim tells us that in a deep South that is notoriously hostile toward organized labor, workers at Warrior Met's Brookwood coal mine have been the targets of multiple attacks but have so far held firm. PlaylistMarcy Playground: "Sex And Candy"Heartless Bastards: "Only For You"Paula Fuga: "Too Hot Mama"

With President Joe Biden’s signature, the American Rescue Plan Act became law on Thursday of this week. This wide-ranging package of relief measures—which despite garnering widespread bipartisan support among voters, passed both chambers of Congress without a single Republican vote—authorizes a set of landmark expansions of existing income security policies and programs—including an historic expansion of the Child Tax Credit, that for the next year at least, turns the CTC into a fully available child allowance that’s estimated to cut child poverty in half by establishing a guaranteed minimum income for families with children. To break down the major income-boosting elements in the American Rescue Plan Act, now that help is on the way—and for a look at what families can expect to receive in the way of economic relief—Rebecca sat down with Seth Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and a former advisor to President Obama for tax policy.
