Today, we're joined by Shirley Wu, senior director of software engineering at Juniper Networks to discuss how machine learning and artificial intelligence are transforming network management. We explore various use cases where AI and ML are applied to enhance the quality, performance, and efficiency of networks across Juniper's customers, including diagnosing cable degradation, proactive monitoring for coverage gaps, and real-time fault detection. We also dig into the complexities of integrating data science into networking, the trade-offs between traditional methods and ML-based solutions, the role of feature engineering and data in networking, the applicability of large language models, and Juniper's approach to using smaller, specialized ML models to optimize speed, latency, and cost. Finally, Shirley shares some future directions for Juniper Mist such as proactive network testing and end-user self-service. Shirley Wu began creating data visualization for the web shortly after the initial release of D3.js in 2012. She fell in love with the technology after realizing it offered her a way to combine math and art, her two greatest childhood fascinations. After making her way through the steep learning curve with help from the D3 community, she has spent the past decade learning out loud—generously sharing her creative and coding process with the world. Shirley started the collaborative blog datasketch.es in 2016 with Nadieh Bremer as a way to prioritize self-initiated projects and creative experimentation. Fast forward a few years and Data Sketches has become a book that features an foreword by Alberto Cairo. He describes Shirley and Nadieh as “wondrous eccentrics” who “wished to defy what is acceptable” and there isn't a better way to describe these two humans and their work. We get analysis from Shirley Wu, a research fellow at the University of Harvard, who monitors relations between Beijing and Washington. Wildfires, record high temperatures and strong winds are sweeping parts of Greece, Turkey and Lebanon, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people; we hear from Eleni Myrivili, a former deputy mayor of Athens, who has just been appointed as the city's Chief Heat Officer. On August 12th, Zambians will vote in a national election, which comes as poverty is more widespread, the country's foreign debt has increased, the economy has suffered recession and a third wave of of Covid 19 is keeping children out of school. So what will the implications be for the economy? We speak to Paul Nyambe, founder and chief executive of Zamgoat a company that farms and produces goat meat in Lusaka. Over the last year surfing has seen a boom in popularity, as people who want escape lockdown have taken to the waves. The surge in popularity is a major boost to Europe's biggest online surf equipment retailer, Boardshop in the UK and we hear from co-founder, Roger Moon.

Shirley Wu is a freelance data visualization expert. Data visualization, at its core, is when you take lots of data, and it's hard for you to look in Excel. You visualize that into some graph or chart, and the most simple could be a bar chart or some graph so that you can understand trends within it easier. In data visualization, there is an entire spectrum of approaches you can take with a dataset. You have to decide on the balance between art and the data. With clients, choosing where in that spectrum is asking yourself, "What do I want for the end-user to experience?" The difference between a purely artistic piece and a visualization is that with data visualization, there's a goal to it. You're taking data, and you're trying to communicate something, or you're trying to build a tool to help people explore that data. Shirley Wu has been freelancer since 2016, creating data visualizations for her clients. In this episode, Shirley talks about the four projects that had the most significant impact on her. In 2017 Shirley created an interactive visualization of the musical, Hamilton. It blew up on the internet. It was the first time a project of her's had a significant response. It made her realize that code could be beautiful, colorful, and inspiring. The audience might not remember the figures or the writeup, but they will remember the emotional response they had. Her next project was less fun and a lot more serious. She worked with The Guardian on an investigative journalism piece called Bussed Out. The project was meaningful to her. In the past, she shied away from more serious projects due to a fear of the backlash she'd receive if she didn't do it right. She got to work with a very talented team of journalists who taught her what she was capable of if she teamed up with the right people on important topics. On a less serious note, Shirley had the privilege of having a visualization be commissioned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The project was to do something with the data from Send Me SFMOMA. This project caused her to reconnect with making art for its own sake. The most recent influential project was Legends. It was a personal project on the fifty-one female Nobel Prize winners since 1901. With her other digital projects, she is lucky only to get a few minutes of someone's time, but she wanted more than that, she wanted people to linger and be present. So Shirley is now pushing herself to break the boundaries of digital and make moving her visualization into physical space a reality.
