Pick it up (please)! Its a ska special in MLPP Towers this week, and what better way to usher in the summer than to have a chat with Save Ferris' very own Monique Powell! She's been in movies, toured the world and gets mentioned in autobiographies and has taken time to speak with the fat lads about being mates with Two-Tone legends, Bro Culture, living in Birmingham, protesting and most importantly, Save Ferris' upcoming new releases and tour.Sadly there is no Aldi report this week as it wasn't Tom's turn to go. But we do have: Niallism gets the memo about the ska special, being inspired in your sleep, a tasty reminder of our flurry of Manchester Punk Festival activity and for the first ever time, we feel the need to tell people off. You've let me down, you've let the podcast down...etc etc.Music this week is by: Another One, The Slackers, Madness, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Sadaxe

Ever wondered what it's like to transition from being one of the UK's first graffiti writers to a distinguished DJ and producer? In our latest episode, we sit down with Richard Sen, who not only faced prison for his graffiti but also first started DJIng through the Acid House movement of the late '80s. We journey through his eclectic career, exploring his collaborations with icons like Brian Ferry and LCD Soundsystem, and discussing the impact of his new album "India Man," which delves deep into his multicultural heritage.Richard's story is a captivating blend of musical evolution and cultural exploration. From early influences shaped by a legendary Rolling Stones concert to discovering his own music taste through the Two-Tone movement and 80s pop, Richard takes us through the sounds that formed his artistic persona. We also explore the profound influence of hip-hop on his life, particularly how seminal works like "Subway Art" and "Style Wars" inspired his graffiti art during the turbulent times of Thatcher's Britain. But Richard's journey doesn't stop at music and art. He's also a criminology scholar and volunteer, dedicated to helping prisoners reintegrate into society. We discuss how his academic pursuits and volunteer work with Saint Giles Trust have provided him with a unique perspective on the justice system. In episode 298 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on the importance of the 'why' over the 'how' in photography, avoiding the need for a 'style' and why subject matter should be based on your passions and interests. Plus this week, photographer Virginia Turbett takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Virginia Turbett was born in 1957 in rural West Sussex and is a British rock music and social reportage photographer best known for her photographs of bands, fans and street culture between the years of 1977 and 1987. In 1977 Turbett was asked by a good friend to photograph the Sex Pistols recording Pretty Vacant for Slash magazine. A year, and many punk gigs later, a chance meeting with a Sounds journalist led to a collaboration which lasted a few years – photographing Punk, Rock, Pop, Heavy Metal, Mods, New Romantics, Skinheads, Two-Tone, Ska, Reggae, the fans, style and fashion of the time. At the same time, Turbett was working on a left-wing paper photographing social and political stories. In 1979 she was asked by the Editor of Smash Hits magazine, to photograph features and interviews and she continued working on the magazine until she gave up photography to look after her two children in 1987. Turbett contributed to many magazines of the late 70's and 80's including The Face, Sounds, Smash Hits, and Record Mirror creating images of artists and musicians including the Pistols, Clash, Blondie, Iggy, Andy Warhol, Frank Zappa and Nick Cave. Turbutt now works from her home in South Devon selling prints from her archive and contributing to publications, films and TV, exhibitions and record covers. https://virginiaturbett.com Dr.Grant Scott After fifteen years art directing photography books and magazines such as Elle and Tatler, Scott began to work as a photographer for a number of advertising and editorial clients in 2000. Alongside his photographic career Scott has art directed numerous advertising campaigns, worked as a creative director at Sotheby's, art directed foto8magazine, founded his own photographic gallery, edited Professional Photographer magazine and launched his own title for photographers and filmmakers Hungry Eye. He founded the United Nations of Photography in 2012, and is now a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, and a BBC Radio contributor. Welcome, one and all, to this week's episode of Fratello Talks. Today, RJ, Morgan, and your host Nacho gather around the mics to discuss gold and two-tone watches. Each has a different level of experience and many opinions regarding the topic. RJ is a bit of a gold-watch connoisseur, owning more than a couple of 18K heavy hitters. Nacho has dabbled in gold but has never dared to go two-tone (yet). And Morgan has not yet owned a watch with precious metal at all. However, he certainly seems ready to enter the world of gold and two-tone watches.
The Loving Paupers have a brand new album out. Ladders! Who are the Loving Paupers you ask, they are an amazing band that plays "Melancholy Roller Skating Rink Reggae," according to Jump Up Records's Chuck Wren. And you know what, he's exactly right. So today, we have on their guitarist/songwriter Jorge Pezzimenti. But we have so much more to talk about than just Loving Paupers' new Victor Rice produced album. We dive deep into Jorge's ska past with 90s ska-punk band The Decepticonz (as previously discussed on the Patrick Stump and Jamie Woolford episodes), as well as his time in DC's one and only Pietasters. We even touch on his 80s cover band The Legwarmers and some of his side projects, like the infamous Jorge and the Landladies record Monobound. We also talk about the influential role that MU330 had on The Decepticonz, Too Hep Records (This Aren't Two Tone, Metalliska), and we learn which song The Legwarmers were playing when the police shut down their show at the Kansas House in 2001 (Hint: it was "Eye of the Tiger") We also talk about the time Jorge was arrested just before a Pietasters gig, how the Pietasters once backed soul icon James Brown, and he tells us some important Jamaican records like Desmond Dekker's Music Like Dirt and The Heptones Night Food. Catbite gives The Loving Paupers a shoutout in Bearded Gentlemen, we learn how Tango music informed Jorge's song "Let's Not Rewind These," and find out whether the Decepticonz had an oboe player in the band. Plus we devote a little time to 2000s-era hipster bands with weird stylized names. All caps, no caps, weird letter in the center capped for unknown reasons. It's all there! Support the show
Growing up with father Slim Dusty and boarding school in Sale Victoria our featured guest David from Two Tone Pony the band after retiring from a career as a medical practitioner has gotten back into the studio and out on the road. Celebrating the art of songwriting, passion, and music host Rae Leigh and David discuss the powerful art form and give tips and advice on the journey to writing, co-writing, and recording your own music. Two Tone Pony was born out of late afternoon verandah sessions overlooking the Tasman Sea on the Central Coast of NSW. With their musical roots buried in alt-country, this five-piece collective is beginning to create a following amongst people who enjoy foot-tapping on Sunday afternoons whilst listening to original tunes that tell stories of Australia. Their influences include locals such as Slim Dusty and Don Walker, but also those on the American scene like Jason Isbell and Wilco. Between them they've been around various musical outfits for quite some time, they share vocals, can play multiple instruments, and love what they do. Over the last twelve months, they've written and recorded a bunch of original tunes that are shovel-ready to tour and you can sample them by jumping on the video links. Two Tone Pony is David Kirkpatrick, Ian Rhodes, Graham Puglisi, Glen Willey, and Greg Richardson. Connect with Two Tone Pony here: Website Facebook YouTube Instagram Spotify
