This week's Talkhouse Podcast came together in a fun way, when a new-ish artist referenced the work of a more established band in a song, and the head of a legendary indie label thought they should meet. That sounds complicated, but don't worry I'll explain. Our guests are Claire Rousay and Kevin Drew. Kevin Drew is best known as one of the founders of Broken Social Scene, the influential Canadian band slash collective that's been around for 25 years now. The band has amassed an incredible catalog that broke out with 2002's unstoppable You Forgot It In People but all of its records reward a deep dive—as does the solo work that Drew has also released over the years. Last year he released a moving record about loss—among other things—called Aging, and as you'll hear in this conversation, he hopes to reignite Broken Social Scene for one more run that includes some of the collective's members that have gone on to big careers outside the band, like Leslie Feist and Emily Haines. I personally would love to see it. I imagine the other half of today's conversation, Claire Rousay, would as well. The impetus for this conversation is her song “Lover's Spit Plays in the Background.” In case you're not familiar with the aforementioned Broken Social Scene album, You Forgot It In People, it features a song called “Lover's Spit.” Rousay's song is from her fantastic new album Sentiment, just out on Thrill Jockey Records, on which she leans more into song structure than on past releases, which have been tagged “emo ambient.” Rousay uses found sounds, hazy atmospherics, and Auto-Tune to tell sometimes crushingly depressing stories in a way that somehow turns out gorgeous. Check out “Lover's Spit Plays in the Background” right here. This conversation ended up happening because Thrill Jockey's Bettina Richards reached out to Drew to let him know about the nod on Rousay's song, and the rest is history: As you'll hear, they connected pretty quickly, and they chat about blackout curtains, influential record labels, the death of Kevin's mom, and what Drew dubs Claire's “beautiful, vulnerable, shadowy womb/sleeping bag of a record.” Enjoy. 0:00 - Intro 2:29 - Start of the chat 4:49 - On Claire's unusual introduction to Broken Social Scene's music 9:24 - On music as a lifesaver 13:47 - On the future of Broken Social Scene 17:35 - On being jealous of your peers 21:42 - On blackout curtains 31:27 - On signing to Thrill Jockey 36:46 - On negativity and career expectations Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Claire Rousay and Kevin Drew for chatting. This week we are look at the indie Canadian electro pop duo, Metric, featuring Emily Haines and James Shaw also of Broken Social Scene. The two albums we will be reviewing are 2007's Grow Up and Blow Away and 2009's Fantasies. Interestingly, Grow Up and Blow Away was the band's 3rd record when it released in 2007, but it was recorded and shelved 7 years earlier. This makes for an interested contrast between that record and the fourth released record, Fantasties. The latter album is near perfect, and we absolutely loved it.For feedback, please email DownOnHighPodcast@gmail.com

In this chat, he and I discuss the album, and its myriad dark, deep, personal themes, as well as what led to its conception and its status as a very piano-led record (which isn't something we've previously associated much with his music). We touch upon Broken Social Scene, and their recent celebration of the 20th anniversary of their landmark record You Forgot it in People. We talk what those songs mean to him now, the music industry at large, and also the staggering glory of Emily Haines and "Anthems for a 17-Year-Old Girl". Metric has become one of those bands that have paved the way for independence, along with Aimee Mann, Chance The Rapper and the other self-releasing copyright owning pioneers. Their fifth album Synthetica (2012) as it turns out, is a favourite of the band's front woman and main co-writer Emily Haines. Even though it didn't reach the commercial heights predecessor Fantasies did, it was a mature and ambitious record, setting the tone for Metric's accomplished and reliably strong catalogue.  It brings us to the band's recent projects Formentera (2022) and this year's sibling album Formentera II, neither of which miss a beat - not a weak track among the combined 18 songs. If consistency is what you're after, Metric should be your new favourite band. It was refreshing to hear that there was no particular logic to the selection and scheduling of both the Formentara albums - no grand design - just the sound of the band hitting their stride enough for a double album (even if it is released in two seperate packages). “We had made a body of work and knew we had a double album. When we rejoined civilization after our Doomscroller tour, we thought this was the most fun way to release it. I've always envied the surprise release. So we announced on the one year anniversary of Formentera, there is a second album”. This magnum opus came with other influences too, including the “impossible-made-possible” stylings of British filmmaker Terry Gilliam, in particular his 1985 cult masterpiece Brazil. Once you understand the connection between Formentera and Gilliam, you are reminded of a deep artistic sensibility behind Metric that sets this band apart. But what is Metric's secret to making such consistently strong material?“It's terrifying to me that we don't really know what we are doing. Everything we do from a sonic standpoint, to a visual, to lyrical themes…it all comes down to this feeling. All I know is that when I feel it I know it, and if I don't, it will never see the light of day”. No wonder Metric's catalogue is such an entertaining ride.Full text at https://www.songsommelier.com/Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we have the pleasure of reuniting two intensely creative individuals who first worked together decades ago: Emily Haines and Olivier Assayas. Haines is, of course, the singer and primary songwriter for the band Metric, which she's been fronting for the past 20-plus years, and which sprang from the same fertile Canadian scene that gave the world Broken Social Scene and Stars, among many others—in fact, it's Haines' voice that you hear on Broken Social Scene's biggest (and I would argue best) song, “Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl.” But her primary focus over the years has of course been Metric, which just released their ninth album of thought-provoking indie-rock anthems, Formentera II. It's a sequel to the excellent album they released exactly a year prior, and another collection of danceable, fantastic songs. Check out “Just the Once,” from Formentera II, which Haines describes as “regret disco.” So what does a catchy Canadian indie band have to do with a fearless French filmmaker like Olivier Assayas? A lot, as it turns out. Back when Assayas was prepping his 2004 film Clean, he needed a band to perform in a scene, and when he saw Metric, everything clicked: You can see the band perform their early hit “Dead Disco” in the movie, and Haines and Assayas hit it off after working together. Like Metric, Assayas has created an incredible body of work over the years, and done it—again like Metric—by following his own muse. His best-known films include Irma Vep, Clouds of Sils Maria, and 2016's Personal Shopper, for which he was proclaimed Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. In a strange twist, he was asked to re-created Irma Vep as a TV series for HBO, which he did under the condition that he have total artistic freedom. That came out last year, and it's definitely worth checking out. These two get right into a great discussion about how they approach creating their art: Both rely on instinct rather than any desire for commercial success. They talk about the real Formentera—it's an island in Spain—versus the one Haines created for these albums. They touch on Haines' father, a well-known poet, and how that might have figured into her creative growth. Also, you'll learn from this chat that every piano has one great song in it. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Emily Haines and Olivier Assayas for chatting. Teagan Johnston - the artist formally known as Little Coyote - is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter with a penchant for melancholy melodies that sing from her piano. Jonhston's latest singles: "Blue Monday" and “Slash to hurt, Stab to kill” are dripping with dark imagery and are sure to be cornerstones of her upcoming album due to be released at the end of the month. Her despondent pop music puts her piano and her introspective vocals at its centre and judging by her love of Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton, she comes by that sound naturally. The Classic Film: Bride of Chucky (1998) "Chucky, the doll possessed by a serial killer, discovers the perfect mate to kill and revive into the body of another doll” (IMDb.com). Believe it or not: we really enjoyed the Tiffany/Chucky dynamic and the silly/serious juxtaposition, but you can see where the franchise is headed and, based on the last scene, we're not looking forward to it. The Modern Film: My Valentine (2020) "A pop singer's songs and artistic identity have been stolen by her ex-boyfriend/manager and shamelessly pasted onto his new girlfriend/protégé. Locked together in a small concert venue after hours, the three of them confront the emotional abuses of the past...until things turn violent” (IMDb.com). The filmmakers responsible for My Valentine may not have made the most original product themselves (especially when you know the real story), but at least the fun they were having bleeds out of the screen (and the speakers). Collaboration with others can create amazing things, as long as you are willing to compromise and deal with obstacles to accomplish your goals together.  Having more failures than successes isn't a bad thing. He grew up in Toronto and got his creative start attending high school at the prestigious Etobicoke School of the Arts along with two future members of BSS, Emily Haines and Amy Millan. After his interests changed from acting to music, he teamed up with Charles Spearin for a recording project called K.C. Accidental and released two records. The duo gradually blossomed into the more ambitious Broken Social Scene, and in 2007 he recorded his first solo release, Spirit If..., the first in a proposed series of solo records by various members of the mega-group. His second solo record wouldn't appear until seven years later, following the success, and eventual 2011 hiatus, of Broken Social Scene. While recording his solo follow-up, Drew began working with Canadian singer/songwriter Andy Kim of classic pop group the Archies, which reignited his creative flair and inspired him to finish his second offering Darlings, which was released in March 2014. While writing the music for what would become Metric's 2015 record, Pagans in Vegas, front-woman Emily Haines traveled to Nicaragua and Spain, while guitarist Jimmy Shaw holed up at home in Toronto and fiddled with the knobs on synthesizers and pedals. The result of this mashed-up approach to songwriting is an album with tight, taut songwriting, but also the surface sheen of krautrock and 80s synth-rock idols. The band stops by the studio to play a few songs and talk about their latest approach to record-making.

Interview with The Beaches

Bringin' it Backwards

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2019 25:47

We had the opportunity to interview The Beaches! "There has always been an undeniable, almost preternatural connection between The Beaches and music. Each member of the Toronto garage rock group remembers being drawn to their instrument casually until developing a specific, important need to create and perform their own work. Miller sisters Jordan and Kylie remember picking up the guitar as young as six years old, eventually going to practices together. Jordan admits that Sheryl Crow’s appearance on Kid Rock’s “Picture” was her inspiration to learn how to strum. Soon, the pair would find themselves immersed in their own original works. “We ended writing songs at an early age and found a passion for that,” Kylie says. Eliza Enman-McDaniel remembers being taught the guitar by her father at a young age, too. Her curiosity grew and from there she discovered other instruments, most importantly the drums, which she says she found in the comfort of her grandmother’s home. “My grandmother had a drum kit in her basement so I was able to go next door and play whenever I wanted, jamming on my own,” she says. And Leandra Earl had a connection so profound to the piano that, after 12 years of playing, she was going to dedicate her postsecondary education to classical piano. The sisters Miller, along with Eliza, would eventually become a band – a best friend’s dream. Casually, one day, while walking to school, Jordan and Kylie asked if Eliza would be interested in joining their band. “She came to our studio and we ended up jamming together. The three of us have been playing ever since then,” Kylie explains. The trio would then be in another band at the time called Done With Dolls—a pop punk creation by Disney affiliate, Family Channel. But, as Kylie explains, it really wasn’t exactly they wanted to do long-term. “In high school we decided to change our sound and the name of the band and that’s when we got our friend Leandra to join,” she says. This is the genesis of The Beaches. There is a real and important specialness to a group of young girls being drawn to rock and pop music as a creative pursuit. Their love of the genre and of forming a real relationship with their instruments—eventually foundational for their enormous fan base—was clear from the beginning. Named appropriately after the Toronto neighbourhood they all hail from, The Beaches is as authentically rock ‘n’ roll as it comes. Their 70s aesthetic, vivacious attitude, and electrifying sounds all fit harmoniously in a modern rock context. Rock music is an experience; it’s a visceral reaction to a moment, emotion, or a mood. And all of that is all built upon the foundation of live performance. The Beaches prioritize and emphasize instruments, not backing tracks, when they are onstage, beckoning their audience to go on a hypnotic journey only live music can accomplish. “When people come see us live, they are only going to hear that live version of the song,” Jordan says. “It’s going to be slightly different each time. And that’s sort of a powerful thing to experience.” The Beaches released their sizzling debut LP, Late Show, in October 2017 via Universal Music Group Canada. Late Show is representative of the band’s unity. After some time spent in Los Angeles, working on other tracks with a variety of rock and pop producers, The Beaches came back to Toronto, bringing the lessons of those sessions back with them. Working with Toronto Aughts rock legends Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw of Metric—and occasional Broken Social Scene members—The Beaches were able to truly define themselves as a rock ‘n’ roll project on their own turns. They are a fusion of past and present, defiantly placing them in a modern and future context where rock prevails. Now, on their newest EP, The Professional, out May 16, The Beaches have further evolved as songwriters and musicians. On The Professional, the band worked with legendary producer Garrett “Jacknife” Lee. Lee has worked with important modern pop and rock musicians like The Killers, Snow Patrol, Bloc Party, and U2, as well as produced Taylor Swift’s eponymous 2012 record, Red. “We pulled from a lot of different influences because [Lee] is such a talented musicians and pulls from so many different genres of music,” Kylie explains. “We referenced Blur, obviously The Strokes are big for us. We were also listening to James Brown and a lot of 70s funk records. We listened to David Bowie.” For “Fascination,” Jordan says she listened to and referenced The Bangles a bit, tapping into all-girl band rock history. Kylie continues: “[This EP is] definitely an evolution for us because it was a bit more of a collaborative experience, which we enjoy doing. Lee is such a lovely person and I feel like we all learned a lot about writing and music and grew as a band.” Lee, who had never been up to Toronto before in this capacity, worked on a couple songs with a group in the city. But the band, traveling back to Los Angeles for the first time since their early years trying on songs written by others, wrote the majority of the EP at Lee’s Topanga Canyon house. Perhaps there is a touch of California’s breeziness woven through this latest EP. There is an admirable quality for making music and creating a space for an audience to find themselves in based on your own positive experiences in the genre. For The Beaches, rock is refuge. And this is exactly what they are providing now to a new generation of hungry fans." Credits: Theme Song: Scott Russo & Design: Oscar Rodriguez We want to hear from you! “The thing that is the product is the excrement,” Emily Haines posits, loosely paraphrasing English writer, Jeanette Winterson. “The thing that is of value is the experience.” We’ve only got half an hour for an interview, as she rolls through town to promote her latest solo project, Choir of the Mind, and by the end it feels as though we’re racing to cram as many ideas as possible into that brief window of time. The Metric front woman and Broken Social Scenester is a self-proclaimed “bad meditator,” but she clearly has no issues living in the moment. She’s equally reflective, as well — an artist who’s clearly thankful for where her skills have helped her get. Haines’ first solo in 11 years in an exploration of memory, the result of returning home to Toronto after years spent in New York City. It’s the story of the cyclical nature of one’s life confronted by the realization that we’re invariably vastly different people than we were the last time we set foot on a familiar block. Fresh off a limited run of solo shows, Haines is happy to be back in the city she once called home, if only for a few moments. And from the sound of it, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Let's be honest: Hug Of Thunder, for all of its good intentions, kind of sounds like something made by Hasbro: perhaps a giant, fluffy, crime-fighting machine—the likes of which, for all we know, could actually be one of the members of Broken Social Scene, the Toronto-based and terribly talented music collective that burst on the scene with an iconoclastic by way of shamelessly celebratory catalogue years ago, until momentum finally waned with a substandard release in 2010. The good news is that they're back, and inspired to move listeners to action (or at least empathy) in response to the terrorist attacks in Paris, they reconvened to knit together a stripped-down by way of purposeful collection of tracks. Many of the usual players are here, your Kevin Drew, Leslie Feist, Emily Haines and so on. It's an all hands on deck setting, and while Hug Of Thunder may not pack the unique punch of their best early work, this is the sound of musicians (however many multitudes) on the same page, enlightened and emboldened. We also play a rousing game of 'Broken Social Scene, Odd Future or a Town in Saskatchewan,' so that's something too. She and Vass talk to TIFF's Chandler LeVack about #feministlivereads -- what started with an casual tweet has come to lady-championing life and reminds us of the lack of quality roles for women. Solution? DIY.  In our second segment, we are joined by Art Spin's Layne Hinton to talk about the transformative in/future festival coming up at Ontario Place. "When I was asked to record a mix for the new DISTRIKT podcast, I tried to take myself back to the playa and the dusty daytime action that DISTRIKT creates. In my own interpretation I felt the need for tribal aspects of dirty progressive breaks, funk tech Electro and smooth driving basslines. Not only because some of my favorite sets at DISTRIKT consisted of DJs playing these styles, but I tried to imagine myself playing at DISTRIKT with all the dusty, beautiful people ready to get down and what I would play at that very moment. The track selection, style and all out emotion of this mix plain and simply explains myself and what I would one day love to bring to the atmosphere that is DISTRIKT." - Influence Track List 1. Metric are an enigmatic, shape-shifting band -- always has been, always will be. Born out of Canada in 2001, they have built a discography that now spans eight studio albums that are difficult to box into any one genre (or two, for that matter). Part indie rock, part pop punk, part dance, part electronic -- why even try to put a label on it? The point is that it all works. At the center of it all is Emily Haines, who sings, writes songs, and plays synths and other instruments. Haines rocks it effortlessly with authenticity, energy, and swagger, despite confessing to suffering from deep bouts of stage fright. It's actually a topic she addressed on Metric's breakout single "Help I'm Alive," with its thumping beats and searing lyrics like, "I tremble, I tremble/ They're gonna eat me alive/ If I stumble."Haines joins The Story Behind the Song host Peter Csathy to talk about "Help I'm Alive" and how it and Metric's fourth album, 2008's Fantasies, helped save the band. Also on this episode, Haines discusses the dark but euphoric "Doomscroller," the 10-minute track that kicks off Metric's latest album, Formentera.Listen the the latest episode of The Story Behind the Song now, or watch the full discussion via Consequence.
