If you are like most of us, you jumped into your online business with nothing more than the intense desire to BYOB ( Be Your Own Boss, that is…) and put your faith in the celebrity coaches and online gurus to show you the way.  Now you are a few years into it, working too many hours,  making too little money, and feeling super stressed about how to get anything else done in the rest of your life.  It's time to do a reality check, climb out from under our sunk cost and shame and forgive ourselves, so we can get busy right-sizing our business. None of those gurus is living your life, paying your bills, or coping with your problems so you are the expert on how your business should actually look and how to make it fit your life, instead of taking over your life.  You can right-size your business, no matter how long you have been in it, by asking yourself some important questions and making the changes that align with your honest answers.  Things to Consider to Right-Size Your Business:How many hours a week can you devote to your business? How soon do you need revenue & profit to keep your boat afloat? What are your financial needs and cash flow comfort zone? What is your end game for this business? What level of intimacy & contact do you want with your clients? How much time (or money) can you devote to marketing? What is your capacity to sustain all this without burning out (energy, bandwidth)? There is no one “right-size” business for everybody because each of us has a different life, responsibilities, challenges, and priorities.  Your business can change as your stage of life and opportunities change, so don't shoehorn yourself into anyone else's version of a dream business.  You don't “have to” do anything unless it's right and sustainable for you.  Did you recognize yourself in any of the ways I talked about in this episode? So many of my clients knew they were struggling and suspected they were holding themselves back in their business when they hired me, and one of the first things we did was to assess their mindset and habits.  If you don't know what isn't working, you won't know what to change, right?  I created a quiz with 6 different behaviors I often see in female solopreneurs that limit their income, profit, and success.  Once you take the quiz, you will receive specific feedback, guidance, and practical advice about your particular challenge and more importantly, steps you can take to fix it.   Click on this link to take the quiz: What's Holding You Back?   https://bit.ly/obstaclesquizAs you heard in today's episode, it's finally happening!  (cue Lizzo's  “It's About Damn Time”) I am launching my brand new program this fall, The Boss Up Breakthrough, based on my proven framework for next-level success for female solopreneurs. This program is one part coaching, one part mastermind,  one part accountability circle, and a whole lotta fun getting past whatever is holding us back, with a small group of other baddies.  It is for committed bosses who are not where they want to be and are ready to break through their obstacles and boss up in their business. Click here to be notified of all the details: Group Coaching Waitlist  So, that's all for now, Driven Woman!  Please join us next week for another amazing Client Success Story episode with Meredith Ferguson, a brilliant website designer.  Meredith and I will be talking about marketing your genius and how to launch your creative business even if you are scared shitless, feel like a fraud, and have no boundaries. In the meantime, stay driv

Putting the finishing touches on your design project can either make it or break it! Knowing the right size and shape of the chandelier, and more importantly, how high to hang the fixture is something not everyone is familiar with. Jem Funk, interior designer and lighting designer, is the perfect guest to give tips on choosing light fixtures. Jem has been with us on several occasions and always shares her knowledge with us. These podcasts are meant to share information but, as always, Jem and Nancy recommends working with a professional on your projects. ASSESS LIVING ROOM LIGHT DIMENSIONS A simple light sizing calculation can prove a useful guide to scaling a pendant light to a living room or another space such as a bedroom. Measure the length and width of the room in feet and add the two figures together. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE LIGHT OVER A DINING TABLE A light like a chandelier or modern statement pendant that’s one half to two thirds the width of the table below in diameter will be large enough to draw the eye, but won’t verge into overpowering territory. With light sizing, bear in mind that the height at which the light is hung is important. SIZE LIGHTING TO A KITCHEN ISLAND Rather than a single large light, hang a series over an island or a dining table. Smaller multiple pendants can work well in a kitchen or dining area. FACTOR IN LIGHTING SHAPE ‘A globe-shaped pendant looks great when oversized. Round or tiered design has some height as well as width, a pendant light could have appreciable scale width-wise, but be of a relatively modest height. TAKE MATERIALS INTO ACCOUNT Glass or wicker pendants can be bigger as there is a transparency to the fitting but usually pendants are constructed of a combination of materials. It is important to check the dimmability of any pendant you purchase. Some LEDs are embedded so this is key, or if you can add your own bulbs you have more control. Back to Basics: 6 Methods to Right-Size Your Next Writing Project

[Ep 227] Have you ever written a blog post and found it's growing too big and unwieldy? Or you set out to develop a book only to realize you don't have enough material to fill a 45K- or 50K-word manuscript?  If so, you're struggling with Goldilocks Syndrome: your idea is too big or too small for the project's purpose and the way it'll be published or shared with the world. You're trying to cram everything you know about, say, computers into 800 to 1,000 words. You've got the makings of a book when you set out to write a blog post. How do you narrow it to a reasonable length? Or you're trying to stretch the idea of cooking with crackers into a book-length project, but it's not enough material. How do you broaden the concept to produce a compelling cookbook? What does it take to land on that just right length for your next writing project?  The 6 Right-Sizing Methods Test these six methods for narrowing—or broadening—your next writing idea and you'll land on the perfect length, approach, and slant to suit this project's audience, purpose, and medium. In the process, you'll gain clarity and solidify your ideas.   The six different methods to right-size your projects are: TimeLocationCategoriesAudienceIssueStructure Let me describe each one, starting with time. When does it mean to right-size your project using time? 1. Time You can use time to focus on decades, a stage of life, or an era. For example, depending on your topic, you might limit your idea to focus only on the 1950s, only early childhood, or only on the Middle Ages.  If you're writing a memoir, you'll limit the scope of your book to a specific time in your life in which you experienced struggle and transformation. If you're writing about plants, you could focus on the planting stage.  If you need to broaden your idea because it's too narrow, you can simply expand from the 1950s to the first half of the 20th century or from early childhood to Kindergarten through sixth grade. 2. Location Location is another way to land on the right size for your project. You could focus on geography, meaning anything from a continent or country all the way down to a city landmark, neighborhood, or business.  But you could think of location on an object or a space. The gardener may want to write about an area of the garden or the location on a specific plant, such as the roots or petals. If you're writing about flight, you could focus on small airports in a given state or areas within a specific airport. 3. Categories We can also use categories to think through an idea we find to be too big and broad or too small and narrow. Find some commonalities and group those things that are similar. If you're the garden blogger, you could focus on one category—vegetables—instead of flowers, trees, or groundcover. Dial down even more by categorizing nightshades or spring vegetables or weeds. The blogger who writes about planes can narrow to categories such as biplanes, jets, or airliners. By focusing on a small category, you easily narrow your idea. And then you can broaden by including multiple categories. 4. Audience First-time authors often want to write a book for everyone in the whole world. That's not realistic. The first step in right-sizing will be to narrow your audience. For a specific project, you could narrow even further, selecting a sub-group within your target audience. Maybe you write for parents, so to narrow the topic you outline an idea for parents of preschoolers or parents of teens.  So you can use a subgroup of your broader group to narrow. Including more types of people in your audience will broaden the idea and inform how you write it. 5. Issue Many topics have issues baked into them: gun control, parenting philosophies, technology use. Writers may take one side or another on these topics to automatically right-size their idea. Addressing only one issue related to their ide...
