What if the very body you once trusted suddenly felt like the enemy—and the only way to heal was to rewrite the story of your loss, one page at a time?In today's episode, I'm joined by the resilient Madeleine Garner—a writer, children's literature enthusiast, and former preschool teacher whose work explores the intersection of storytelling, healing, and parenthood. With a background in early childhood education and a deep appreciation for the emotional power of picture books, Madeleine has long used storytelling to help others navigate life's big feelings. Her debut picture book for adults, Your Baby Will Find You, was inspired by her own experience with pregnancy loss and aims to gently open space for honest conversations around grief, love, and healing. A mother herself, she brings authenticity, compassion, and insight to every story she tells, working alongside acclaimed data designer Giorgia Lupi to pair poignant visuals with heartfelt prose.Throughout this episode, Madeleine opens up about the miscarriage she experienced in 2022 and how writing became her pathway through grief. Drawing on her lifelong connection to children's literature, she processed the loss by crafting a picture book-style story that could hold the weight of her emotions while offering comfort to others. She speaks candidly about the emotional and physical toll of pregnancy loss, the feelings of isolation it often brings, and the journey toward trusting her body again. Through her collaboration with Giorgia Lupi, the book became a layered visual and emotional experience—one that captures the duality of joy and sorrow. Madeleine's hope is to provide a resource that is both factual and tender, creating space for healing and helping others feel less alone in their grief.Tune in to episode 205 of Joy Found Here as Madeleine Garner shares her powerful journey through miscarriage, the healing power of storytelling, and how her debut picture book offers comfort, connection, and hope to anyone navigating grief. In This Episode, You Will Learn:Meet Madeleine: From preschool teacher to author (3:50)Learning to trust her body again (6:30)The journey of writing and healing (8:30)Creating a book that speaks to all grief (10:15)Navigating relationships through grief (12:40)The complexity of pregnancy and loss (16:15)Finding joy amidst grief (20:32)Conception, pressure, and letting go (24:37)The importance of community and support (31:25)Creating a resource for healing (34:17)Final thoughts and encouragement (39:28)Connect with Madeleine Garner:WebsiteInstagramGet Madeleine's books!Let's Connect:WebsiteInstagram Hosted on Acast. Data isn't just about numbers or trends — it's about capturing the stories that shape our lives, says information designer Giorgia Lupi. Following a long COVID diagnosis, she tracked her symptoms meticulously over four years, the data culminating in a visual “New York Times” narrative that resonated deeply with many others suffering from chronic illness. We're told miscarriage is common, but no one prepares us for the grief, the isolation, or the guilt that follows. In today's episode, I'm joined by Madeleine Garner, a New York-based writer specializing in children's literature and design. In 2023, she was selected for the prestigious Woodward Residency, where she completed several children's books. Madeleine shares her personal experience with pregnancy loss and how it inspired her to write a picture book for adults that offers comfort and understanding.Throughout this episode, Madeleine courageously opens up about the pain and confusion that followed her miscarriage, highlighting the silent grief many parents endure. She explains how society often lacks the language to discuss pregnancy loss, leaving individuals to process their emotions alone. She reflects on how her background in children's literature influenced her approach to writing—a book that is simple, accessible, and comforting rather than clinical or instructive. Her collaboration with designer Giorgia Lupi added a powerful visual element to the project, reinforcing the emotions behind each moment of loss and healing. Through her storytelling, Madeleine aims to normalize discussions about pregnancy loss and provide support to those who feel unseen in their grief.Tune in to episode 310 as Madeleine Garner shares her deeply personal journey through pregnancy loss, revealing how storytelling, art, and community helped her navigate grief and offer comfort to others facing similar heartbreak. In This Episode, You Will Learn:Madeleine's background and creative journey (1:10)A personal stories of pregnancy loss (2:06)The silence surrounding miscarriage and the need for conversation (7:08)The emotional complexity of pregnancy loss: Knowledge and community (10:48)Collaborating on a picture book with Giorgia Lupi (17:05)The impact of visual storytelling (20:00)Final thoughts and where to find the book (23:08)Connect with Madeleine Garner:WebsiteLinkedInInstagramGet Madeleine's existing book: Madeleine Garner - This is Me and Only Me!Preorder Madeleine's upcoming book: Madeleine Garner - Your Baby Will Find You!Let's Connect:WebsiteLinkedInInstagramTwitterThe Grief and Happiness Alliance Hosted on Acast. Why do we constantly underestimate how long something will take in the short-term? In other words, we tend to over-estimate just how much we can achieve right now. Then, when we think long term, the reverse tends to happen: we actually UNDER-estimate what we're capable of achieving over time. Today, we want to know more about the promise of a popular trend, the creative streak, and whether they can help us overcome our constant battle with planning our time and achieving something greater. This week, Grant Faulkner, Executive Director of the world-wide phenomenon NaNoWriMo (aka National Novel Writing Month) gives us a peek into the power (and potential pitfalls) of creative writing streaks. Meanwhile, Giorgia Lupi, an information designer and partner at the firm Pentagram, reflects on her famous, collaborative creative streak, Dear Data, with Stefanie Posavec -- a year-long journey of sketching personal data-based postcards, which eventually led to exhibitions, book deals, critical acclaim, and internet fame. Can we change our relationships to deadlines? How might we banish our inner editors holding us back during crucial early stages in the creative process? Since then, she's co-founded Accurat, a data visualization design studio, presented a Ted talk, become a Partner at Pentagram, and more.In this episode of Reverse Engineered, Jon Penland welcomes Giorgia Lupi of Pentagram to discuss information design, her humble beginnings with a weekly newspaper column creating visual data, and how that led into her career today helping brands showcase data. As an information designer, Giorgia has a passion for finding and looking at data through the lens of how it can be better interpreted and explained to others. Giorgia uses that ability to take datasets, big or small, and transform them into stories that stakeholders care about. While data visualization has picked up a lot of steam in recent years, Giorgia's on a mission to humanize the collection and interpretation of data to be more helpful overall.Check more episodes at https://kinsta.com/podcast/

Curious Minds: Innovation in Life and Work

What if knowing how successful people see the world could help us achieve our goals? When we see people achieving their goals, we may be tempted to give up. We tell ourselves they have advantages we lack, like more time, and maybe even traits we lack, like a better work ethic. While both may be true, what if there's a different reason they succeed, one that has to do with how they see their goals? That's what Emily Balcetis, Associate Professor of Psychology at New York University and author of the book, Clearer, Closer, Better: How Successful People See the World, set out to discover. For example, in an innovative study of visualizing goals in order to choose which ones to pursue, she asked women to shop in a different kind of store. She explains that, "On the shelves, they saw paper bags with labels...hours for a work week...[number of] kids...compensation packages...all different facets of life that they had thought about in that survey were now made concrete." Emily learned that making deliberate and strategic choices about how we visualize our goals can dramatically improve our chance of achieving them. Her findings reveal four visual tactics we can use to do just that. One of these, "narrow your focus," is something elite runners do. In a study on exercise, Emily taught participants this skill and the results were fascinating. Emily shares that, "People who were taught to narrow their focus of attention...took more steps when they went out for each...walk, they moved faster in the same of time, and they went out more often for walks or runs in the week that followed." Emily's work has been featured in The Atlantic, Scientific American, NPR, and Forbes. She's received awards from organizations like, the International Society for Self and Identity and the Foundation for Personality and Social Psychology. What can data tell us about our own humanity? Giorgia Lupi is an information designer, artist and author with a love for creatively representing all types of data. She's the co-founder of the design firm Accurat and few years ago, embarked on a small creative project with a friend. Every week they tracked a feeling, behavior, or event and then hand drew a postcard visualizing the observations. These post cards are delightful and were aggregated in a book called Dear Data and last year were acquired into MoMA's permanent collection. Yet, even with this milestone contentment felt so elusive. Dear Data revealed that tracking the “mundane details” of our lives has the unintended consequence of putting us more in touch with our thoughts; forcing us to hit “pause” on our frenetic lives. And at the end, Giorgia shares a simple way for all of us to set up a small data project on our own lives. + THIS WEEK'S SPONSOR: Does your life insurance policy match your life circumstances? Life is made up of gestures, sayings, emotions, and sounds. Note them one by one and you see them as individual elements, granular aspects of our day-to-day. On a minute level, they may not say much. But look at them together, draw them out, and they can begin to tell a story. (When we say "draw" here, we mean literally draw.)  That's exactly what two whimsical data scientists did in a new book, Dear Data . It's a collection of whimsical postcards Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec exchanged over the course of 52 weeks.  Each week, Giorgia and Stefanie would assign themselves a small-scale data collection project-- to track their "thank yous," or their desires, or their productivity, or the frequency with which they checked the time-- and then exchanged their findings in hand-drawn postcards. This week, Giorgia and Stefanie took us down the rabbit hole of three postcards: "thank yous," "complaints," and "sounds." You can check out the images here along with the original music made by Hannis Brown featured in the episode.     Now it's your turn, dear Note to Self listener.  Have you been collecting data about your life? Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec are both renowned designers with a penchant for visualizing data. This passion turned a pen-pal project into a full-fledged book, Dear Data. For a year, they exchanged postcards weekly, cataloging their lives using different kinds of data. Some days, they counted the number of doors they walked through. Other days, they recorded their level of indecision. Regardless of the data they collected, they would visualize it differently in each postcard. Dear Data is a collection of these "slow data transmissions," with some color commentary sprinkled in. You can follow them on Twitter here. How much they cursed, laughed, read, smiled at strangers, … — all of this is documented in inventive, charming and very analogue ways. Learn all about the project — how they started it, what they learned, and how it will live on — in the episode. Links mentioned: Yay for slow data! We have Giorgia Lupi from Accurat on the show with us this time in our first real face-to-face episode ever -- yes Moritz and Enrico in the same room! Giorgia's work, and generally the work done by her agency, has been super popular lately. You might have seen, for instance, their work visualizing Nobel Prizes or visualizing painters' lives. Giorgia kindly hosted us in the Accurat's studio in New York where we had a nice chat on hand-crafted visualization, high-density designs, design studios, and much much more.
