From skyscrapers in New York's glittering skyline to automobiles being built in Detroit, America came to rely on Birmingham and Sloss Furnaces for providing materials needed to produce thousands of products. Birmingham grew to a metropolis almost overnight, earning it the nickname of “The Magic City”. But as with all progress, a price was paid..in the currency of blood. Crazy work hours and conditions, slavery, evil managers all mixed in with the need for greed. Anne & Renata ask, "Is the Sloss Furnace site haunted?" A night watchman in 1926 sustained injuries after being “pushed from behind” and told angrily by a deep voice “to get back to work.” The man, upon searching the grounds, could find no sign of any other living person. Happy Spooky Wednesday, folks! We've got a haunted home and a freaky factory for you this week! Kala talks about The Hinsdale House, also known as the Dandy House, in Hinsdale, NY. This old home was made popular in the 70s when the Dandy family reported being bombarded with paranormal activity while they resided in the old barn house. Objects moved, shadow figures were seen, and there may have even been some possession! And while there were attempts to cleanse the house, it doesn't not appear those attempts were successful. And Brittany talks about Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, AL. This historic landmark has a history full of terrible supervisors, industrial accidents, and other non-OSHA approved activities. The spirits who perished there still reside in the building. Who will you see? The man who was sucked into the industrial gears? Or maybe “Slag” the manager who overworked the workers and died in a very T2-esque accident? Either way, we're pretty sure it's not something you want to see. www.leftofskeptic.com

This week's episode isn't for the faint of heart. Zoey brings us the bloody history of The Sloss Furnaces, a national historic landmark in Birmingham, Alabama that once produced iron. The town of Birmingham was built almost overnight when Colonel James Withers Sloss, a merchant and railroad man, convinced he L&N Railroad company to merge the North and South lines through Jones Valley.Jones Valley was selected as the home for Birmingham because it had all the raw ingredients needed to make iron within a 30 mile radius, including iron ore, coal, limestone, dolomite, and clay. The time period was after the Civil War when the need for iron, and later steel was at an all time high. So company's like James Sloss' Sloss Furnace Company grew very quickly. However, they didn't care too much about their employee's safety. Around 60 men died while the Furnaces were in operation, and about 47 of them were under the watch of the night manager who was known as Slag. Slag mistreated the employees more than anyone else, and he, too, found his death at the property. People, including Zoey, believe that Slag refused to leave the factory. There are more ghosts, though, and a visit from our favorite paranormal investigation team. But first, Robin brings us a Something Spooky to talk about the Megalodon shark.Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2024/01/23/ep-146-the-gruesome-sloss-furnacesVisit us on Social Media! Sloss furnaces is a National Historic Landmark located in Birmingham, Alabama that was open in the late 1800s to 1971. While it was operational it was a pig iron-producing blast furnace. In the early 1900s, James “Slag” Wormwood, was foreman of the “Graveyard Shift” and they had a skeleton crew of nearly 150 workers to keep the furnace going. Wormwood wanted to impress the bosses though, so he would make his workers take dangerous risks, forcing them to speed up production… In October of 1906, he was at the top of Big Alice, which was the highest blast furnace. He lost his footing and fell into a pool of melted iron ore. It is said that his body instantly melted. People say that he must have gotten dizzy from the methane gas but he had apparently never been to the top of the furnace in all his years working there. Ever since then there have been hundreds of reported paranormal experiences in the area… Stay safe out there. Located in Birmingham, Alabama, Sloss Furnaces is now a historical landmark, but once was a fully functioning iron producing furnace. It was originally opened in the late 1800's and was fully operational for almost 100 years. According to reports, there is a more prevalent paranormal activity than what is normally expected at an industrial building. Today, you can go on historical tours 5 days a week, but paranormal experiences are still had here. Join us to talk about the urban legend associated with this location and some of the ghost stories here. Birmingham, AL may not be considered a "big city" - but it is the mother of big cities. After the Civil War, Birmingham became one of the lead producers of the iron that would be used to build New York & Chicago's skyscrapers. The largest manufacturer of this material was called Sloss Furnace, and the harrowing, violent stories that have risen from its past leave no question as to why it is now considered one of the most haunted locations in the United States. _____________________________Please be sure to like us on social media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shadowcarriersInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/shadowcarriers/Twitter: https://twitter.com/shadowcarriersIf you like what you hear and want to buy your storytellers a drink, you can catch us at @shadowcarriers on Venmo. If you want more "Shadow Carriers", check out our Patreon at: patreon.com/shadowcarriers.
