How celebrity began to change the face of sport, and how boards went from surf to street. Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who've made, and been made, by trainers. We'll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak. Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world's biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It's also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it's a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion. The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you'll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who've played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research. Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith. Episode 5 Cast: Paul . . . . . Gunnar Cauthery Steve . . . . . Aaron Gelkoff Tony . . . . . Stu Massengill is the founder of the Finding Direction Podcast, a show that helps people find direction in their life. He studied business entrepreneurship at San Diego State University, but before graduating took 4 years off to follow one of his passions and built an 8 million dollar health and wellness business. At the age of 23, Stu encountered one of the bigger battles of his life as he was informed he had testicular cancer while on a trip in New Zealand. After recovering, he went on to discover the next chapter of his life through experiential learning. He ended up trying everything from starting online businesses to working 14 hour days selling home remodeling projects until ultimately landing his dream job at Vans, one of the largest action sports companies in the world. In a matter of a few weeks, he realized this was not what he truly wanted to do with his life. That’s when Finding Direction was born and he became a National Trainer for Tony Robbins. The Finding Direction Podcast aims to find individuals who live passionate, fulfilling lives and help his audience learn strategies and tactics from them that they can apply to their own life. This podcast has been featured on the New & Noteworthy Education section in iTunes. Stu has interviewed over 50 individuals he greatly admired including Thom McElroy, the co-founder of Volcom, Laird Hamilton, legendary big wave surfer, Steve “Van” Doren who now sits as the vice-president of Vans, and Mikey Taylor, former professional skateboarder and current president and managing principal of Commune Capital. Stu’s also a featured top national trainer for Tony Robbins, the #1 success coach on the planet.

Extreme Sports announcer Dave Arnold is also known as The Voice of Off-Road. If you've been to the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, it's highly likely you've heard Dave's voice. He's announced multiple events, over numerous decades; from SuperCross to X-Games, and he loves Off-Road! "It's the most incredible, physical racing you're ever going to see!" So just how did Dave get into announcing? Well, he was recuperating from a broken clavicle the day he went to watch some friends at a jet ski race and the event announcer never turned up. So, Dave picked up the microphone and started making fun of his friends out on the track. Steve Van Doren from Vans walked up and asked him how long he'd been announcing and he looked at his watch and said ‘about fifteen minutes.' And that's how it all started. 2018 VANS US Open of Surfing and Surfing Walk of Fame: Alan is broadcasting from Huntington Beach, California for the 25th Anniversary of the Surfing Walk of Fame and 2018 Vans US Open of Surfing. We hear from industry icons who shaped surf culture from the beach to the boardroom. First in the hot seat is Bob McKnight, Co-founder of Quiksilver. After acquiring the Quiksilver license in 1976, Bob began selling boardshorts out of the back of his Volkswagen van to local shops along the west coast. As surf culture exploded in America, Quiksilver began making waves in mainstream fashion and is now one of the leading surfwear companies in the world. Bob offers advice on raising capital and taking calculated risks. Then, we turn our attention to a fashion brand synonymous with action sports, Vans! How did Vans go from a small family business to the largest single action sports brand in the world projected to make over $3.5-billion in annual revenue in 2018? "We are always trying to think young, feel young, and be young," says Vans Vice President of Events and Promotions, Steve Van Doren. Learn how focused product offerings and smart brand extensions paved the way to the heart of the youth market. Next, when Fernando Aguerre founded Reef Footwear with his brother in 1984, there wasn’t a business plan in sight. As the company rapidly expanded and new hires came flooding in, a clear company vision was needed to unite the Reef family. Fernando walks us through the challenges and rewards of cultivating a colorful corporate culture. Wrapping up the event, we chat with Wing Lam, Co-Founder and Partner of Wahoo's Fish Taco, a favorite eatery for beach-goers wanting a fresh menu and fast-casual atmosphere. By partnering with elite athletes and brands, Wing built a culinary empire. Wing shares how you can make a splash in your industry with the power of social media influencers.
