Throwing back to the classic (if slightly underheralded) animation of our youths, Kevin brings forth Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, yet another Hasbro-backed vehicle reverse-engineered to sell toys. And, like the far more popular G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, this show was made by Sunbow Productions. Has lightning struck twice?

Order of Battle Podcast episode 106 Jason had the pleasure to sit down with Michael Hill. He was a producer and writer for Sunbow's GIJoe and Transfomers cartoons. He was also the author of the Special Mission Brazil cassette tape and Claymore character. Michael talks about what a producer's job was, hanging out with Jack Kirby and Gary Gygax, and in general being a part of the history of our love and passion, GIJoe. He is very giving of his time and the stories he tells are fantastic. All of my favorites from this show you can put off. None of them are really required for any sort of collection. As much as I love Lady Slither and her articulated tail, do we really need her? I almost wish I had collected the Holiday Black Series figures from the beginning, especially because the latest batch is just killing it on a bunch of different levels. Another Transformers crossover to take or leave popped up as well. It looks great, but do you really need it? I don't think anyone needs G.I. Joe ReAction figures, but the Sunbow deep cuts keep sucking me back in.

Many people treat G.I.Joe these days like the cartoon was nothing more than a toy pusher, while many toy based toons are guilty of doing this, Sunbow managed to create shows that connected with our hearts before connecting with our wallets. Joining Cade and Jiggy in this episode is Tim Nydell of Saturday Morning Rewind to discuss what this series means to us and how it got us to care enough to wanna own the toys that it was marketing. The Pemmy & James Kinda-Sorta-Hopefully Funny Cartoon Podcast
Podcast listeners, Transform and ROLL OUT!No other boys toy line to get a cartoon in the 1980s seems to have had nearly the longevity that the Transformers have had. The mix of science fantasy, boisterous characters and imaginative designs just clicked into place like a well built Leader Class toy, in spite of all the wild animation errors and goofy scripts. So what was the secret? Pemmy and James look at the episodes "SOS Dinobots" and "Webworld" to try and pin down the foundation of what makes this franchise keep on truckin'.
Ho-Ho-Holiday Special III – GI Joe: A Real American HeroEpisode 1:39, “Cobra Claws are Coming to Town” (1985) and He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special (1985) “Well, I don't like to feel good. I like to feel EVIL!” Your Distinguished Professors have prepared quite the holiday treat – we're going back to 1985 with two ridiculously bad extended yuletide toy commercials! Topics discussed include constant Skeletor impersonations, our sense of nostalgia takes a punch to the gut, the weirdness of Horde Prime and the idea that both Hordak and Skeletor are just middle managers, Adora and Adam are Jesus, Jesus conveniently edited out of the Christmas tale, the terrible character design of the Monstroids and Manchines, clear competitive pressure from Transformers, the Beast Monster and the Snow Beast, the omission of Cringer/ Battle Cat, the absurdity of Adam's voice, our attempts to explain Christmas to aliens, Adora's fascist past, a quick reference to The Toys That Made Us, Filmation and Sunbow, the fascination with transformation sequences, Orko is a kidnapper, naked time travel, the creepiness of Adora and Adam's relationship, Tom of Finland and Fisto, Hordak's flying sex toy, skeletons are only real when they are inside of us and the innate scariness of a skull face, another flagrant violation of the prime directive, Shipwreck's eventual transformation into Shore Leave of The Venture Bros., Shipwreck's parrot is his top, Destro's lame shrink/ growth ray, Destro's status as an arms-designing mercenary, Cobra Commander's mask change part way through the episode, the innate weirdness of 1980s kids' toy franchises, Duke asserts his manliness, double bagging is a bad idea, the amazingly low stakes of GI Joe, the ”porkchop sandwiches” parody of GI Joe's public service announcements, and our Joe code names and specialties.
Before the early 1980s, Hanna-Barbera and Filmation were the only two industry juggernauts that ruled the Saturday Morning airwaves with HB ahead of the pack. And nobody could catch up to either in popularity and the amount of animated shows they produced in a factory-like way. But with the advent of weekday afternoon and first run syndication in the 1980s, other companies started to appear and for the first time become real competition for the two studio giants of the animated landscape. The one that popped out of nowhere and was stiff competition for both was a French/American company called D.I.C. Or Diffusion Information Communications was its full name … although there are some in the industry that thought it should have stood for Do It Cheaply. Though, much like a great number of these companies that cropped up in the 80s, D.I.C produced a great number of shows based on toys (M.A.S.K and Care Bears) as well as shows based on comic strip characters (Heathcliff and Dennis the Menace). Their most popular and best remembered character might very well be INSPECTOR GADGET. An original character that was not connected to a popular toy line. Although one would come out of its popularity. D.I.C was also infamous in the industry for underbidding properties and courting toy companies away from other studios. A good case in point is the way they took over Alvin and the Chipmunks from Hanna-Barbera legends Ruby-Spears and GI Joe away from Sunbow after the failure of GI Joe the Movie. So, join Bret, Jamie and Andrew as they take a trip down memory lane as they prove once and for all that they DO know D.I.C. And a big thank you to performer Madam Misfit for allowing us to use her electro swing version of INSPECTOR GADGET at the end of this episode. Please go to her website to learn more about her as well as listen to and purchase her music. And follow her on social media.
Sunbow Truebrother is an author, networker, international speaker and shamanic practitioner with four decades of experience in shamanic journeys and teachings in over 20 countries. He has learned and worked with Native Elders from dozens of nations of the Americas and Australia. These teachings and experiences have led him to connect with interdimensional guides such as ancestors, animal spirits, the Sasquatch and Star Elders. Sunbow returns to the show a second time to discuss the annual Rainbow Gathering meetings, his adventures in Australia performing ceremonies to bring rain (and yes they succeeded), how he discovered an pit of human bones and how to best honor our ancestral burial grounds. Sunbow Truebrother began having experiences with Sasquatch (aka Big Foot) and UFOs in 1981 at age 17. He says that his great great grandfather was a Sasquatch hybrid and that this predisposed him to find out more about these mysterious beings. He traveled around the world meeting indigenous peoples who all had stories to share about Sasquatch encounters and contact with extraterrestrial life. Sunbow describes his physical contact experience in 2003 with a Sasquatch Elder, Kamooh, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He says that Kamooh subsequently began sharing with him information about the true history of Earth and the different genetic experiments conducted by extraterrestrial visitors with indigenous life forms all over the Earth. The sequence of genetic experiments have led to different forms of intelligent life over millions of years starting with the Fish People, Ant People, Reptilian People, Bird People, Sasquatch and finally humans. Sunbow explains how Sasquatch have highly developed psychic abilities which helps them evade being captured, but they have nevertheless been hunted to near extinction by humans for centuries. He describes how the genocide against Sasquatch continues today with modern surveillance and capture technologies, and how wildfires have been used to decimate their traditional habitat in North American forests. Despite this dark history of being hunted by humans, the Sasquatch nevertheless regards themselves as humanity's elder brothers and protectors, and are eager to help us awaken to our true spiritual potential and place in a densely populated universe. Sunbow Truebrother has written a three volume series called The Sasquatch Message to Humanity which is available on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08KWFDWR6?.... There's a fair bit of GI Joe animation out there. Be it DIC, Extreme, Sigma 6, Resolute, Renegades and, of course, the legendary Sunbow series. And these shows served to showcase a lot of toys. But nevertheless certain characters, designs, and concepts slipped through the cracks and were criminally omitted. GI Joburg takes a look at a few of these toys in episode 251. Interview with Sunbow - Part One He talks about his first encounter, the search for understanding regarding OBE and dream experiences, finding wisdom and support in the indigenous [Hopi] communities and how he got his name. The Sasquatch Message to Humanity - 3 book series. Sunbow TrueBrother, Amazon. SunBôw received and transcribed these messages from an Elder Sasquatch named Kamooh in 2015 while in British Columbia, Canada: "Our Sasquatch Elders want to “talk” with people in a powerful decision-making capacity because someone must comprehend all the negativity that is happening and take the lead in creating a peaceful and environmentally-friendly world for a healthier planet in Spirit, Mind, and Body." UFOs, Star Elders, Sasquatch - are Related. Sunbow had his first Sasquatch encounter as a teenager. In dramatic fashion - an unknown and unseen intruder attacked their camping shelter and caused the cedar trees they had cut to support the roof to snap - resulting in collapse of the tent and exposing the group to the pouring rain. One of the group who had been staying in a separate tent witnessed the event. He told them they had to leave - yelling hysterically about seeing a big hairy monster tear up the campsite. Point made. They departed. While they had also experienced the classic Sasquatch mindspeak - no one knew about Sasquatch - it was much later that the connection was understood. ScenicSasquatch.com Sunbow says - "If you run into a Sasquatch someday, do not deny, hide or fear; open your consciousness to the message their Soul carries." - The Sasquatch Message to Humanity Interview Part 2 - Mindspeak with Sasquatch and the ET who asked a Shaman for help healing a wounded Sasquatch. Buzz Dixon's writing resume has included Thundarr the Barbarian, Jem, Inhumanoids, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Tiny Toon Adventures, Tarzan and the Super 7 (the Web Woman installments), Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, Dungeons & Dragons and the Teen Wolf animated series. He has worked for Filmation, Ruby-Spears, Sunbow and Warner Animation. He has also worked with some legendary people including Jack “The King” Kirby. The man who basically created the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. But it's GI Joe he's best remembered. And wrote some of the most memorable episodes for the series using his time in the Army to help guide the writing team in creating stories for a military team. Bret, Jamie and Andrew continue their discussion about work in the industry and the weekday afternoon and Saturday morning. And his thoughts about the revival of interest in 1980s property. And what it was like being part of creating those properties back then. As well as advice to young writers who wish to get their ideas out.

Alec and Nick discuss the role of narcissism in the history and production of experimental music. The episode gives a close account of the paradigm introduced by art historian Branden Joseph in “Beyond the Dream Syndicate: Tony Conrad and the Arts after Cage” with special attention to how problems of authorship, the archive's role in framing genealogy, critiques of institutionalized culture, and the “dark triad” (narcissism, psychopathy, and machiavellianism) all play out in “minor histories” of music. La Monte Young, Tony Conrad, 4Chan, Bandcamp Friday, Charlemagne Palestine, Sigmund Freud and more are all discussed. Opening theme music by Xander Seren. As the times become more chaotic, the Sasquatch have become more present in the lives of humans. In this conversation with Sunbow, the Sasquatch have become more bold in reaching out telepathically to humanity with messages about our past and future. In one instance, Kamooh, the Sasquatch that has been in connection with Sunbow, visited him at a crowded campground much to the chagrin of the frightened campers. Sunbow's rendering of the story is both entertaining and enlightening. In the latest book, 'The Sasquatch Message to Humanity 3', several Sasquatch contactees give testimony to what they were shown and told telepathically. The Fanholes share and discuss their personal favorite episodes of the original Sunbow cartoon!
Marvel joined with Sunbow to deliver the first of four animated feature films based on Hasbro toys in the 1980s with 1986's MY LITTLE PONY: THE MOVIE, which took the popular toy line of dolls resembling ponies and other animals (plus a few humans) and pitted them against three dastardly witches who can't stand their rampant pleasantness. Danny DeVito, Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Rhea Perlman and Tony Randall do their best to bring this colorful musical adventure to life. Critically and commercially tanking at the box office at the time, it's about time we look this gift horse in the mouth and see what we find with this retrospective review!
Fanholes Frightfest continues in TF Tuesdays as the Fanholes discuss the macabre Marvel UK story arc "City of Fear" and the spooky Sunbow cartoon episode "Dark Awakening"!
We've run out of Sunbow miniseries' to review... So this September we reach for the DIC! But it's not all bad. In fact, some of it is pretty darn interesting. Stay tuned as we discuss the highs and lows of this era of GI Joe cartoon adventures for five days straight! We also discuss the potential animal companions of the GI Joburg squad, and we see red with a definitive sculpt section devoted to the Crimson Guard. Stay locked onto us this week for a whole lotta DIC. Okay, the DIC thing is getting old, I'll try to reign it in. But it was so damn funny to me as a child. I don't think I'll ever get over it.
Ep3/JIM SORENSON 68 minutes · Originally Aired Mar 7, 2012 Episode Info Ep3: JIM SORENSON "GI JOE FIELD MANUAL" For years the community has been craving a GI JOE art book… specifically, a card art or packaging art coffee table-style volume. On this episode, we talk not only to the man who is most likely to make it happen, but who is also very much up to the challenge. This man’s name is Jim Sorenson. Mr. Sorenson is an animation historian, archivist, restorer, and enthusiast. If the name doesn’t sound familiar to the GI JOE world, it’s because he’s spent most of his energy up to this point contributing to or writing books on, the animated world of Transformers: The Complete Ark -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1600104886?ie=UTF8tag=thar-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=9325creativeASIN=1600104886 The AllSpark Almanac 1 -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1600104878?ie=UTF8tag=thar-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=9325creativeASIN=1600104878 The AllSpark Almanac 2 -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1600106838?ie=UTF8tag=thar-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=390957creativeASIN=1600106838 But now… NOW he’s set his sights on GI JOE with the “GI JOE FIELD MANUAL”… a book that compiles the production artwork for the Sunbow GI JOE animated series!!!! Coming out through IDW in the same vein as his previous Transformers Ark books listed above, the “GI JOE FIELD MANUAL” is a first-of-its-kind for GI JOE. And if it does well (read as: BUY THIS BOOK)… it doesn’t have to be the last! Not a fan of the Sunbow cartoon? That’s pretty inconsequential in regards to this book. The art and designs for Sunbow are just as responsible as anything else for shaping the GI JOE universe that we’ve come to know and love over the past 30 years, especially when stripped of its final, often campy, fully animated form. Not only that but there are things in this book alone which have never been brought to light before. Things like the image Mr. Sorenson shared with us for this episode (click the following link) which seems related to the origins of the creation for the character of Duke: http://www.joedeclassified.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=459&sid=5032f1ceab82742b39421f62e7363c65 Mr. Sorenson not only talks to us about his previous books and this current book he is working on... but he also takes us deep inside his process, from hunting down source material to what it.
We've been pretty harsh on Sunbow GI Joe cartoons in the past. It's a pretty big deal for a lot of Joe fans, so we thought we'd take a look at a few selected episodes to find the love. Did we succeed? Tune in; find out... Also, details on Paul and Cujo's new music venture are hinted at; and the recent spate of superhero flicks come under fire. Yo Joe!

Today 30 years ago GI Joe: The Revenge Of Cobra aired for the first time. You may of course know it by it's street name: 'The Weather Dominator'. The five-part miniseries followed almost exactly a year to the day on the heels of the first GI Joe miniseries, The Adventures Of GI Joe. Or 'Mass Device'. It would appear Sunbow and Marvel had managed trap lightening in a bottle. With new characters, new weapons and equipment and superb production, she's as worthy a topic to podcast as any. So to mark it's 30th anniversary, GI Joburg discusses each episode in turn for the following five days. We kick it off today with episode 1, "In The Cobra's Pit". Watch the 'toon.Listen to the show.Shoot us a message!

Gary is taking a few episodes off, so special thanks to Maximus for the edit job.
