Charisma is a word we hear all the time, but what does it really mean? Why are some leaders able to draw people in, while others push us away? I've been fascinated by this for years, wondering why we're drawn to certain people, what makes us follow, and how charisma shapes our lives in ways we don't always notice. In a culture where stories and leaders are constantly competing for our attention, understanding charisma feels more urgent than ever. That's why I'm excited to talk with Molly Worthen. Molly is a historian and journalist whose new book, Spellbound, digs deep into the history of charisma in America. She traces how charisma has played out from the era of the Puritans and prophets, through conquerors, agitators, and experts, all the way to today's age of gurus and influencers. Each era reveals something about what we long for—and what we risk—when we put our trust in charismatic leaders. In this episode, we explore what charisma actually is, how it both unites and divides, and how these waves of charismatic movements have shaped our culture and our faith. We'll talk about the stories that draw us in, the identities we build, and how to stay grounded as followers of Jesus when everything around us feels like it's shifting. If you're trying to figure out who to trust, how to stay rooted, or just want to make sense of all the noise, this conversation is for you.Molly Worthen is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a freelance journalist. She teaches courses on North American religion and politics, global Christianity, and the history of ideas. She writes on these themes for The New York Times and has contributed to The New Yorker, Slate, The American Prospect, Foreign Policy, and other publications. She has also created video and audio courses on the history of Christianity and the history of charismatic leadership for the Great Courses and Audible. Her previous books are Apostles of Reason: The Crisis of Authority in American Evangelicalism and The Man on Whom Nothing Was Lost: The Grand Strategy of Charles Hill.Molly's Book:SpellboundMolly's Recommendations:The SparrowChildren of GodSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. In this lecture Paul Axton explains John's and Paul's spiritual reading of the Hebrew Scriptures which has been lost in modern scholarship (as witnessed to by Charles Hill) and at a popular level. Henri de Lubac points us to Origen of Alexandria as the cure for historicism and what might be a type of Gnosticism, which a correct reading of John cures. Become a Patron! Professional clergy” such as pastors, priests, ministers, rabbis, and imams, face some unique challenges when transitioning out of religion. Their livelihood relies on leading their flock, but when their faith is gone, they may be “stuck in the pulpit” usually without the skills or connections to simply walk away. Charles, Hill, former minister and current Communications Director for The Clergy Project, will discuss the unique challenges faced by these professional clergy who no longer believe what they're preaching and how The Clergy Project provides a safe, supportive landing space for them to share and discuss their loss of faith, family, career livelihoods, divorce, mental health and even suicide. Charles Hill was raised in an Evangelical Christian home. After a 4 year career with the Columbus, OH Police Dept, he had an experience which led him to leave that career behind to enter full-time ministry. Charles and his wife started several successful churches, preached multiple times every weekend to locations around the world, and were well-known Christian conference speakers just before their theological world came crashing down. Following their deconversion they lost income, family, friends and community. He has been an RfR support group leader since 2014, as well as being the Communications Director and a Board Member for The Clergy Project. Charles and his wife, Tiffany, have been married for 25 years and have 3 amazing children. Towards the end of the show, former nun and current Clergy Project screener, Maureen Hart joined in on the discussion. Baker confuses didgeridoo noises for throat singing and Mara suggests he starts a YouTube channel for old ladies who knit. We go deep into the intense drama of Vermeer's personal life and wonder how many priceless loaves of bread you could buy today in exchange for a Vermeer. Our news items are happy and sad this week; we discuss the recovery of an art theft we discussed way back in Episode 2, and then we say goodbye to the legendary art detective Charles Hill who died on February 20, 2021. RIP, Mr. Hill! Baker imagines a love triangle and betrayal lurking in the Vermeer painting, Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid, but Mara sees something hilariously meta in it all. It's the painting so nice, thieves stole it twice! First, by intellectual recalcitrant turned freedom fighter, Rose Dugdale and her Irish Republican Army compatriots. Next, it’s an infamous Irish career criminal nicknamed "The General", Martin Cahill. Finally after two hits, the estate has the good sense to leave the painting's security to the National Gallery of Ireland, where it hangs today. Although the Houston Texans are bad right now, one day they’ll be a good football team again. To drink the champagne serenading another Wildcard Round win, you have to enjoy the toil, love the rubble, and dive deeper and deeper and deeper into the muck of the never ending pit. Everything is in and of itself. For there’s no good without the bad. There’s no Deshaun Watson without Tom Savage. There’s no (HEAD COACH) without Bill O’Brien. And so, what started off as a highly rehearsed, well dressed, very professional podcast regarding the Houston Texans, divulged into free flowing coversation, that took every course imaginable, and swayed from flowery thoughts on the future, to the disaster we’re currently living in. On this episode of Battle Red Radio, Matt Weston, TIM, and Rivers McCown, continue talking about the Houston Texans. Topics include: the most regrettable words we wrote, Julien Davenport’s Pro Football Focus Grade, if (put the Kool-Aid down) Houston was correct not to sign Jadeveon Clowney to a $100 million contract, where Charles Hill went to college, West Texas note cards, Will Fuller trade hypotheticals, LOVE IT AND LIST IT with Zac Diles, Will Demps, and the years, the years, the years, the years. In this episode we talk to Charles Hill, a facilitator for the Columbus Ohio chapter of Recovering from Religion. We talk about how some religious believers, even professional clergy, make the transition to being a non-believer, how important telling your story is to the process, and the start of efforts to form a Toledo chapter of the group. People transition to non-belief in multiple ways. Many don't want to lie about their beliefs for the sake of living a "normal" life so they need help in their struggle to transition to being a non-believer. It's as much of struggle as quitting smoking or trying to lose hundreds of pounds all the while being a pariah in your family. This is where Recovering from Religion and The Clergy Project come in. Based on his legendary Yale seminar on strategic thinking (co-taught by Paul Kennedy and Charles Hill), John Lewis Gaddis discusses his latest book, On Grand Strategy, which offers readers leadership insights by surveying great historical figures spanning from Herodotus to Franklin Roosevelt – exploring the wisdom and temperament that led them to success, along with the mistakes that could lead current and future leaders to ruin.
In an earlier episode, Jay talked with Charles Hill. Now he talks with another Grand Strategist at Yale, Professor John Lewis Gaddis, who is best known for Cold War history. His biography of George F. Kennan won the Pulitzer Prize. Jay talks with him about Kennan, of course — and about Paul Nitze and many another Cold War figure. They also talk about figures more recent, including George W. Bush. Source
John Lewis Gaddis, distinguished historian of the Cold War, has for almost two decades co-taught grand strategy at Yale University with his colleagues Charles Hill and Paul Kennedy. Now, in On Grand Strategy, Gaddis reflects on what he has learned. In chapters extending from the ancient world through World War II, Gaddis assesses grand strategic theory and practice in Herodotus, Thucydides, Sun Tzu, Octavian/Augustus, St. Augustine, Machiavelli, Elizabeth I, Philip II, the American Founding Fathers, Clausewitz, Tolstoy, Lincoln, Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Isaiah Berlin. On Grand Strategy applies the insights and wit readers have come to expect from Gaddis to times, places, and people he’s never written about before. On Grand Strategy offers a master class for anyone interested in the art of leadership. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In February, White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon went before throngs of cheering Republicans at CPAC and proclaimed that reclaiming our "national and economic sovereignty" and "dismantling the administrative state" would be key goals of the Trump administration. Tonight, we take a look at how that policy directive has played out in the arena of foreign policy. Former Ambassador to the U.N. and two-term Governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson talks about how the U.S. is abdicating leadership in Asia and China is filling that void. Charles Hill, a career minister in the U.S. foreign service, breaks down why a diminished, understaffed and underfunded State Department would be a huge mistake.
Dr. Michael J. Kruger speaks with us about A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament. This volume introduces each New Testament book in the context of the whole canon of Scripture, helping a wide range of readers with a rich, redemptive-historical guide to each book. Dr. Kruger is President and Professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his M.Div. from Westminster Seminary California, and his Ph.D. from New College, The University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is the author of three books on the issue of canon, Canon Revisited: Establishing the Origins and Authority of the New Testament Books (Crossway, 2012), The Early Text of the New Testament (Oxford, 2012; edited with Charles Hill), and The Question of Canon: Challenging the Status Quo in the New Testament Debate. In addition to his faculty duties, he currently serves part-time as the Pastor of Teaching at Uptown Christ Covenant Church in downtown Charlotte. Dr. Kruger has spoken on Christ the Center episodes 217 and 283, and his wife, Melissa Kruger, has spoken on episodes 276, 297, and 301.
Irenaeus charged the Gnostics with misrepresenting the truth and historians were charging Irenaeus with misrepresenting the truth. Explore Charles Hill’s four examples: Irenaeus and the orthodox were unfairly nasty in attack. Consider that April DeConick states that the Gospel of Judas was “completely opposed to apostolic Christianity and did not consider the apostolic Christians to be real Christians.” As noted by Charles Hill, “According to the book Catholic Christians are ignorant and cannot be saved, they are fornicators, and murderers of their children and they are ‘those who sleep with men’.” Why was Irenaeus occasionally aggressive? Consider there are trumped up charges that Irenaeus quashed diversity. Irenaeus defines orthodoxy more as a perimeter where there is room for discussion but while still being fellow believers. But he does view certain views as wrong. Irenaeus did not order books to be destroyed. A criticism of Irenaeus is that his polemics were ad hominem and overly sexual. Simon Magus was viewed as the root of all heresies. In “Lost Christianities” we read, “According to Irenaeus and his successors, Simon was the original Gnostic, who taught that he was personally the divine redeemer sent from the heavenly realm to reveal the truths necessary for salvation. Moreover, he had brought his “Primal Thought” with him, the first aeon that emanated from God. This Primal Thought came embodied as a woman named Helen, whom, the heresiologists tell us, Simon had acquired at a local brothel. For these heresiologists, who delight in stressing the point, Gnostics have prostituted themselves in more ways than one.” Consider what Irenaeus stated about Simon of Samaria. Consider the heretic Marcus and what Irenaeus had to say about him. Explore that behind Irenaeus’ attack on Simon Magus is his anger over Simon’s treatment of the Eucharist.
Continue to explore why we only have four Gospels. Consider that there are a number of different types of “gospels” and other “Christian” literature. We have Narrative Gospels (e.g. 4 canonical gospels, and the Gospel of Peter), the Infancy Gospels, the Sayings Gospels (e.g. Gospel of Thomas), Post-Resurrection Dialogues or Revelations (e.g. Gospel of Mary), and Pre-Resurrection Revelation works (e.g. Gospel of Judas and Gospel of Peter). What distinguishes the Canonical Four from the others? They are biographical narratives – there is a context. Bauckham notes that the four are logically prior and chronologically prior. How did the fourfold Gospel happen? We must admit there is a lot we do not know. This is because canonization was a grass-roots process. Which texts did the Christian communities use? Which texts did the bishops read? The churches had to decide which texts were suitable but it did not happen immediately. When did it come about? Many point to the 4th Century with the Council of Laodicea and Athanasius. The four Gospels were widely known and valued in the early 2nd Century. Evidence for this comes from Papias, Justin, Celsus, Tatian, Apostolic succession Muratorian Fragment, etc. Consider Bruce Metzger and Richard Bauckham statements. Charles Hill’s “Who Chose the Gospels” is suggested as a further reading.
Explore extra canonical writings. Consider the story of the discovery of the Nag Hammadi Codices. A sample of non-canonical works include the Gospel of Judas (ca. 170 AD) which had Jesus saying to Judas, “You will sacrifice the man who clothes me.” Charles Hill states, “It is something of an irony then that one of the most telling contributions of the Gospel of Judas to our knowledge of early Christianity just might be its witness to the existence and authority to the canonical gospels before Irenaeus.” Another is the Gospel of Truth (mid-2nd Century?), which is a theological treatise. It is an attempt to draw non-Gnostics to their point of view. Also, there is the Gospel of Peter (ca. 150 AD?) which Serapion of Antioch deemed authentic but later felt it had been tainted by the Docetists in its denial of the humanity of Jesus. Serapion reversed his earlier decision. Explore how the Gospels originated and consider the Markan priority within the Gospels, “Q”, the Lukan source and Mathian source. The Gospel of Thomas (ca. 140 AD) was sometimes thought as “Q”. Early Church Fathers tended not to think it was canonical. The Gospel of Thomas demonstrates secret knowledge and a sense that there is a privileged message which Jesus gives to those “in the know.” The Infancy Gospels try to fill in the gap of the life of Jesus between his birth and ministry. We have the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. They are fanciful stories of Jesus as a miracle child. What is the value of these texts? They show a diversity of “Christian” thought and actually point to the veracity of the Gospels.

Over two decades ago, Max King suggested that the reason why the Christians after AD 70 did not mention the Parousia, was because they had been confused by the Hellenizers into misplacing the eschaton. Twenty years ago, Dr. Charles Hill debunked that idea historically. Here in this lesson, we look at some of the biblical evidence which further refutes King's Hellenization theory, to show that an actual rapture of the Elect saints is the best explanation for the silence of the Christians about the Parousia after AD 70.
