During our feature presentation, we discuss what we look for in leaders, and give examples of great leaders, in our eyes. Before we discuss our feature presentation, we go through the weekly Market Skyline and analyze the market action of late. In the last week, we’ve seen the market stall at resistance, and more focus on the Federal Reserve, the Trade War, Economic reports like the GDP numbers, and oil prices. Where will stocks go from here? What can be the catalyst for a breakout? We’ll discuss first thing, during this episode. Back this week is the Coaches Mailbag, where we field questions from the clubhouse. Tim also has a few questions he’s found on Quora. Enjoy this fun segment, and, if you ever have a questions for the coaches, email us at team@tradingjustice.com Lastly, we play a game where coach Mark has found some fascinating statistics and quizzes Matt and Tim on human knowledge. How many Americans can find the Pacific Ocean on a map? Do more Americans know who the family members of the TV show the Simpsons are, over how many know what the 3 branches of Government are? We have some fun with this one, and we expect you will too. Trading Justice is brought to you by Tackle Trading. In this episode of the Trading Justice Podcast, Matt and Tim start with the Market Skyline and do a thorough breakdown of what is happening in trading. Major story lines to track include the US/China Trade War, a potential Government Shutdown, the end of earnings season for stocks, a hard Brexit and more. Pay attention to the discussion on sector strength and weakness, as there are the signs of the market becoming more ‘normal’ than it has been in recent months. During the feature presentation, Matt and Tim are joined by Coach Mark to discuss a commonly asked question: how do I start if I don’t have a lot of money? There are many ideas thrown about, a discussion on our favorite books and products, as well as what NOT to do if you’re in this position. Finally, Mark has cooked up a fun game where the boys must name the political figure who said the quote and what political party they are from. It’s a test of history, politics and trying to read Mark’s mind…It’s definitely a tough challenge! Trading Justice is brought to you by Tackle Trading. In this episode of the Trading Justice Podcast, Matt and Tim discuss the 14 points of a recent report from a market analyst detailing the potential catalysts that could trigger a recession in 2019. Some of the potential triggers include Treasury Yields inverting, global growth softening, US/China Trade deal not finding resolution, Earnings, Valuations, Trump, the Fed, Brexit, Crude Oil, Draghi and more. Listen to the analysis so that you can better understand how traders perceive these risks and whether they are valid risks or not. Before we dive into that, the boys break down the key markets during our Market Skyline piece. Stocks had a bullish month in January and are breaking into new highs. Earnings have been relatively strong as well. Can prices continue to rally? Finally, we filed a few questions from our clubhouse about how a credit spread materializes over time, the idea of hypnotherapy and the difference between growth and speculation in your trading. Jefferson Starship sang a song many years ago called "Jane". Some of the words went..."Jane you're playing for fun, but I play for keeps!" I believe the market is like that. You cannot approach the market like it is for fun; at some point the market will play for keeps and our investment or our trade gets whacked. I do a stock report for a trading community called Tackle Trading... you ought to check them out. There are a set of criteria I walk through to evaluate stock opportunities. While there are many criteria one should look through, I will not list them all; but here are a few critical ones. 1. Establish well-used moving averages The reason why this is important is because you want to see common areas where other traders or investors are making decisions. That is key, on every investment or trade you make someone is taking the other side of that investment. What do they see that you don't? What else do you need to be considering to build your confidence in your position? Take a moment to evaluate the other side of the investment or the trade and what they are considering. Now some of this has to do with how you view your participation level in the market. If you consider you are a short term trader then you watch these moving averages very closely. If you are a longer term investor then you will still use them, but your frequency is certainly not at the same level. What moving averages do you use? I suggest you have three moving averages. 2. Identify multiple time-frames to view the instrument your investing in or trading Once again the time frames you use will vary based on the kind of investor or trader that you are. Here's a key tip: create moving averages on your charts that represent different timeframes! That has made all the difference for me. Sometimes charts can get so busy, it is very difficult to get a cohesive view. Create a cohesive view and it will be a positive impact for you. Much of this will require you to train your eyes to recognize opportunities. Over the years I have learned that it is the discipline TO the system more often than it is the system that is most critical. How do you or I act, meaning how do we execute our system? That is a more critical part of financial investing. What rationale did you or I use to justify breaking a rule in our system? One time I was hiking in the mountains; I was with a group of people, but we decided to split up and check out different parts of the mountain. We each had a GPS; and we had save the pin or the location of our camp. As night approached I decided to start heading back. It was a full moon, I had plenty of food and water and even some shelter I could create if needed. There was snow on the ground. The mountain was quiet. Almost too quiet. I started back and it was dark now, other than the light of the moon. I was using my GPS to guide me back. However, with the light of the moon I could see the contour of the mountain, it sloped down to the left of me, and so did the trail I was on. Eventually I got to a point where my GPS was telling me to go to the right. However, my eyes and my brain were telling me to go to the left. I had an internal battle regarding which way to go. Am I going to use my instruments (my system) or will I go with what appears to be the correct way. I ultimately decided to follow my system; at least in this case I did. I haven't always done that. I am grateful that I did, as the GPS was correct and I went up and over a mountain pass and down the other side to my camp. Our investing and trading systems need to be followed; even when we have some indication things are going a different direction. 3. Find some way to represent momentum It is critical to have a representation of momentum on your charts; regardless of the kind of investor or trader that you are. Sometimes short term momentum can mess with our minds and we get succored into a position. So, please note, that all of these items are to be taken together. You want CONFLUENCE...you want them to work together. So, when it is time to choose an opportunity for investment or trading evaluate: 1. moving averages 2. price action on multiple timeframes 3. momentum Well, the market plays for keeps, but, according to Jefferson Starship it sounds like Jane was just playing for fun. Don't play for fun with your money...get a system and stick with it. Thanks for joining, and until next time...stick with your system!
