We're rounding off our discussion about plastics–micro and macro– with the documentary A Plastic Ocean (Leeson, 2016). Tanya Streeter and Craig Leeson embark on a mission to understand the plastic situation across the globe. A surfing aficionado and a former free-driver, these folks have a vested interest in keeping the ocean free of plastic! We follow them as they go all around the world, Maria tells us about their trip to Spain and we talk a little bit about our staff retreat.A special thanks to Temple KÀ for hosting us for our retreat. The location was so cozy and peaceful I cried on entry! In 2002, free diver Tanya Streeter attempted to set a No Limits world record by diving down to 160m and resurfacing, all on a single breath. She would have to survive the pressures of the deep and hold her breath for 3 and a half minutes. It almost went wrong. Tanya Streeter spoke to Alex Last in 2015. Tanya Streeter knows how to go deep! In 2002, Tanya broke the world record for "no limits" free diving by going down to a depth of (think about this) 525 feet. She successfully set the record for both women and men, and to this day, still holds the record for the women's classification. But she didn't stop there. She has continued to be an advocate of the sport, and has devoted a massive amount of time and energy into the conservation of the oceans. She delivered this incredible TEDx presentation (you could hear a pin drop) in 2012, and four years later, appeared in the documentary The Plastic Ocean, which brings awareness to the problem of plastics in our oceans. She knows better than anyone how important the breath is, as she explained in this recent NPR TED Radio Hour. We are so grateful for Tanya's authenticity and vulnerability, for her mental toughness and her determination! In 1996, he was working as a Trimix Instructor Trainer in Grand Cayman when he was first introduced to the competitive freediving world. Pipin Ferreras and his wife Audrey Mestre were on the island attempting world record dives, and they asked Kirk to set up scuba safety. Although he'd had a lifelong affinity for freediving (or what he'd thought was called skindiving), Kirk became further intrigued by the physiology of the sport and began to learn how freedivers were able to reach such extreme depths on a single breath.Kirk developed the educational philosophy, standards, procedures, and manuals that freediving organisation PFI is built on. To this day, Kirk continues to improve and perfect the PFI system with the newest and most innovative techniques. After training more than 10,000 students, coaching seven athletes to 23 different world records, and setting up world class events, Kirk shares everything he learns with his students in his never-ending journey for more knowledge. He has also been involved training some major celebrities for record attempts and movie parts including Margot Robbie, Tom Cruise, David Blaine, and for the past couple of years has been working on the upcoming Avatar sequels. #76 – Tanya Streeter | Deepest
Limited time! Support the podcast through Patreon and receive a Be Bold bracelet or Be Bold baseball cap! ***** Today’s guest is Tanya Streeter. Tanya is a world champion freediver. She holds the record, set in 2002, when she dove to a depth of 525 feet. She held that record for both men and women for more than two months but she still holds the women’s record and, again, that was over 16 years ago. The crazy thing is that she managed to secure that record on a day when things didn’t go quite right for her—which she does talk about in this episode—specifically she blacked out right before she was doing the dive. I mean seconds before. I’m not sure that I’ve spoken to anyone whose accomplishment sounds so absolutely petrifying to me. You wanna talk about being bold? As she says, you really need cojones to do something like she’s done. This accomplishment is really off the charts. What I’d love for you to do is listen to this episode, then watch the documentary video (it’s about 50 minutes long) called No Limits and then come back and re-listen to this episode because it will take on new meaning. I know you'll listen to this episode and be inspired by this conversation with Tanya Streeter. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode! Tanya Streeter made a remarkable dive – on just one breath of air – to the unimaginable depth of 160 metres. This was a dive that nearly went very badly wrong. As Tanya tells Steve Backshall – himself a world-class adventurer – she blacked-out seconds before she began the dive; she developed nitrogen narcosis – almost like being drunk – and struggled to remember how to release the pin that would return her to the surface. On the way back up she thinks she blacked out for a second time.

“I would work hard at taking that energy that in that moment was called fear and just turn it into strength. Just deciding that you can either let this eat you up, or you can take it - it's just got one label on it - and turn it into something else.” - Tanya Streeter, The Moment HQ podcast Tanya Streeter is is a British-Caymanian-American world champion freediver who holds the Woman's World Record for No Limits Apnea for a 160m dive (on one breathe, with no breathing aparatus). This interview makes it into my personal collection of favourite interviews I've ever done. It's a beautiful insight into our selves, our immense power and our capacity to go beyond the limitations of the mind. My path crossed with Tanya's due to my dad's recent work in directing the latest documentary film: Momentum Freediving, which Tanya is a part of. A film bringing together 16 of the world's elite freedivers for the first time ever. This is a film that has the power to truly bring the beauty and magic of freediving to the world and makes you question your boundaries. I went on to watch Tanya's story via the documentary below and was amazed and intrigued by the power, strength and mindset of this woman. In this interview we capture her intimate journey of self discovery with freediving and explore the inner workings of her mind and how she pushed herself to achieve greatness. “I went on that journey to see what I was made of and for better or worse I found out what I was made of. And I can't ignore it now. It doesn't always make itself evident to me, but I know it's there.” Tanya and I have a chat about REDEFINING LIMITS, HUMAN POTENTIAL & PERSONAL GIFTS Learn about: Her journey of self discovery with freediving Redefining limits: what it means and how you can too The physical, mental and spiritual aspects of training The importance of presence Fear and overcoming it And find out: What moves her?
