Ronald Carter likes to think of creative styling as an art form: a masterpiece, carefully crafted by imagination and passion. He fell into his career by accident as a struggling actor in need of a side hustle. Ronald was living in Seattle at the time and recalls asking a friend if she knew of anyone who was hiring, and she kindly suggested checking out Eddie Bauer. From there, his retail career took off. At Eddie Bauer, Ronald started as a greeter, and in the three years that followed, he worked his way up to designing floor plans for the corporate office and training new visual managers. He then went on to work for Nordstrom, Anthropologie and Porch. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Susan Esayian has been working in the gift industry professionally for 26 years in a variety of roles. From merchandising Kitchen-Aid mixers to buying fine tableware and even carrying a four-poster bed up a mountainside for a catalog photoshoot, Susan has done it all…and that was just in the first 10 years!Since then, Susan's kept herself immersed in the gift industry as a buyer for a hospital gift shop and merchandiser for several wholesale showrooms and retailers. For Susan, retail isn't just a job; it's a career that she's inspired by and passionate about more every day.Jessica Young has been in retail since 1993. She started out working at The Gap in college, met Michelle at Anthropologie around 20 years ago, and the rest is history. From LA to Atlanta and to Vegas, Jessica has collaborated on tons of different projects. Coming to work on the CMA project with everyone was truly a full-circle moment for Jessica. Dave Sherrier, my super supportive husband, started out in retail when he was a kid but ventured off into construction. Fast forward to today; Dave works most of our gift show setups and wholesale show rooms and does a lot of the buildouts for the retailers we work with, such as Sales Producers, Fine Lines, CMA and many more. In this recap episode, the merchandising team dives into the creative side of the CMA show, including the process and how everything came together. The CMA project came up late in the season in October, and everyone brought along their expertise as strong merchandisers to pull it all off. The group discusses the details of the displays, all the moving parts, twists and turns, and reflections on the completed project. This episode is sponsored by CMA. CMA is a leading professional sales representation group operating throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Hawaii, and Alaska. CMA understands the retail world is constantly evolving and welcomes changing trends as opportunities to bring new and exciting products, as well as tried-and-true best sellers, to retailers and their shoppers. Summer Symposium at Common Table: Dr. Jessica Young Brown
In this episode, Alan and Jessica talk about Bubble Goods, who it serves, and how they are helping emerging food brands and unique consumers alike. Jessica Young is a fan of Fufu and the founder and CEO of Bubble Goods. With 10+ years in the food and wellness industry, Jessica saw a gap in the market: food brands were innovating (specifically in the health foods sector), but they didn't have the digital know-how or right platform to launch and scale on. It was becoming harder and harder for these brands to get onto Whole Foods, launch and scale within Amazon, and drive customers into their singular e-commerce channels. Jessica saw an opportunity to launch something similar to what Etsy has done in the handmade goods space by creating and curating a marketplace for innovative, truly strict-label, independent food brands. When she was starting her career, she didn't intend to enter the food industry, but her passion for cooking triggered an evolution that led her to it, and she never looked back. After going to culinary school, she worked as a chef in NYC in Michelin-starred restaurants for a while before she became burned out and began exploring the online food space. She transitioned to the food startup scene in 2013 and eventually became the first employee and Head of Product and Operations for Daily Harvest in 2015 before launching Bubble Goods in 2019.Bubble Goods is a drop-ship marketplace that curates brands for their users and gives small independent food and beverage brands the ability to market nationally. Jessica tells us they have a strict vetting process to make sure they are only delivering the best to their customers, but there is no order minimum so they can remain start-up friendly and keep their finger on the pulse of emerging trends. Bubble Goods has two main groups of customers: one is interested in discovering innovative foods, and the other is searching for foods that adhere to lifestyle and dietary restrictions. Bubble Goods prides itself on being low-lift and high-impact for the brands it partners with, and for many of its brands, Bubble Goods is their first retailer. To help brands succeed, Jessica and her team work hard to be good partners by putting brands in front of the right customers and giving them resources when they onboard for everything from legal resources to marketing partners. In this episode, you'll learn about:What inspired Jessica to start Bubble Goods? What benefits do brands get when they partner with Bubble Goods? Who is the target consumer, and how are they targeted? Key Highlights:[02:00] The first professionally trained chef on the show[03:40] Fufu is having a moment.[06:15] Bubble Goods: what they do and who they serve[08:00] Who is buying from Bubble Goods? [10:00] Bubble Goods role in helping newer brands [11:30] The importance of transparency[15:10] Who is making the food, and does it matter?[17:30] How marketers should leverage Bubble Goods[19:20] What is coming next?[20:15] Lessons from the kitchen [22:30] Advice to her younger self [24:30] New-school and old-school tactics[26:00] Snaxshot and CPGD[26:45] The AI portion of the showLooking for more?Visit our website for the full show notes, links to resources mentioned in this episode, and ways to connect with the guest! In 2022, The Bored Ape Yacht Club was kind of inescapable on some parts of the internet. People—including a range of celebrities from Gwyneth Paltrow to Eminem—were spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to acquire some monkey jpegs store on the blockchain as NFTs. The conglomerate overseeing the collection along with other NFT series, such as CryptoPunks, is called Yuga Labs. VCs including A16z flocked to invest in it, valuing the company at $4 billion. Yuga's stated ambition at the time was to create an interoperable gaming metaverse, where NFT holders could game on a browser. Lately, though, it seems that things haven't been going so well for the company. ‘Fast Company' tech editor Max Ufberg joined us to interview Yaz and ‘Fast Company' staff editor, Connie Lin, about what happened and whether NFTs are even still . . . a thing. Then, Bubble Goods founder and CEO Jessica Young wanted to create an online marketplace where you could find the best—and best-for-you—foods right at your fingertips. Bubble Goods carries only packaged goods that are free of preservatives, artificial dyes, and fillers, plus no refined or cane sugar. And everything it sells comes from small, indie makers that Bubble Goods taste-tests first to make sure its worthy of its consumers. We spoke to Jessica about what led her to create this space for food products, the vetting process for items to be on the site, and what are some of her favorites on the platform.

Since November 2021 terminally ill New Zealanders have had the right to seek a medically assisted death, provisioned by the End of Life Choice Act. Since then, from more than 1400 applicants, 565 people have had an assisted death. Not everyone with a terminal illness meets the criteria, but for those who do, researchers say access can be difficult to navigate. The Ministry of Health is required to review the law in November next year. Dr Jessica Young, a sociologist and senior research fellow at Victoria University, is leading a team of researchers examining the experiences of people who are using the assisted dying pathways. And fellow team member Dr Jeanne Snelling, a senior law lecturer at the University of Otago, is zeroing in on legal aspects of the legislation.

Jessica Young (co-host of the Rants 'n Raves podcast) returns to the podcast as we continue our tawdry journey through #SEXtember with 1987's Nice Girls Don't Explode - a movie that is everything and nothing you'd expect with the title, "Nice Girls Don't Explode". For a movie that explores a young woman's tendency to spontaneously start fires each time she feels amorous, there are a lot of questions and we attempt to answer them all. We also talk about Pauly Shore's 2021 podcast, bad cat sound voice-overs, and the lack of bun squeezing in modern cinema. All of this will make sense once you listen, trust us. Have you ever been in awe of God's timing and God's fingerprints all over the details of a story? I am excited to tell you about one that recently happened. I don't know if you heard last week's episode, but I talked with Jessica Young, and she was one of my special mom stories. Her daughter, Adlie, has a rare genetic disorder and on that episode, we talked about how Adlie had a bone marrow transplant. If you missed our conversation, I highly recommend listening to it first and this one second. I promise the truths that Jessica shares are powerful. This week, I am super excited to be talking with Adlie, Jessica's daughter. She is going to share the story from her perspective, and I am just in awe of her maturity and wisdom at the young age of ten years old. I promise you do not want to miss one word she shares. She is so inspiring and making such an impact on others. So, we will start by listening to our conversation—one of my favorites. And then I have a special God story to share with you that happened after my interviews with Jessica and Adlie. It is a “God-Incident”. Have you ever thought about God is for you? He is not just with you, but He is for you! If you are walking through a difficult season right now, sometimes it doesn't always feel like God is for you or that God is with you. I so love the encouragement from today's episode. It is one of my special mom stories, and I talk with Jessica Young. I knew Jessica when she was Jessica Vanlandingham. I was her babysitter through my teenage years and watched her grow up. She is now a mother herself, and she is going to share about her daughter who has a rare genetic disorder. What I love about today's episode is the perspective she gives us when life is hard, and you are walking through something that you don't understand. Also, at the very end, she reads us these song lyrics that helped her in the middle of her difficult time. She talks about how God Is For You! It is so powerful, and I had goosebumps all over when she shared it. If you are in a hard season right now, you do not want to miss the truth that Jessica shared. The Gunnison sage-grouse (GUSG) is a critically imperiled sage grouse species most folks aren't familiar with. Historically, it was lumped in with greater sage-grouse until the 1990s, when biologists began questioning whether or not it should be its own species. It was designated as a new species in the year 2000 by Dr. Jessica Young and her colleagues. Differences in filoplume length, strut rates and vocalizations during lekking season, and genetics were enough to differentiate it from other sage grouse, making it the first new avian species to be described in the United States since the 1800s.

I first came across Jessica on Instagram, where she was flinging paint on a rug in her studio because lots of people had just told her to be careful of the rug. And I thought, wow, I really need to talk to her about how she came to this point in her life where she can let everyone else's expectations go to the wayside and do what's right for her in the moment. We also talk about using the process of creating something to figure out what it is you're trying to say, which I think is really powerful in a world that's really focused on success and the end result. We also talk about using art as a “dictionary of your language” to express yourself when words don't really cut it, and how to use that to process things that are going on in your mind. You'll find some real gems of wisdom in here no matter what kind of thing you make or perform, and I couldn't have asked for a better conversation to kickstart Season 2. Jessica Long is an elite athlete with a jaw-dropping string of accomplishments and awards. The path to that lofty status, however, has not been without frustration. Along with her 29 Paralympic medals, Jessica has had to endure 25 surguries as a result of fibular hememila, a cogenital limb deficiency that led to the amputation of both legs below the knee. Born to teenage parents in Russia, Jessica also had to learn to forgive her birth mother for giving her up for adoption. Instead of succuming to the anger that she acknowledges characterized her early years, Jessica transformed the power of that anger into determination and used it to fuel her wildly successful career as a Paryalympic swimmer. Along with her own determination, Jessica credits her adoptive parents, Marylanders Beth and Stephen Long, and her Christian faith with making her the person she is today. This is Jessica's story and we're honored to share it on Mainstreet. The Mainstreet Podcast is sponsored by Your Pet AuPair! Jessica's favourite saying is that she's 'finding her way back home'. As a movement teacher who is trained in yoga and dance, she uses trauma-informed practices to help people connect and find agency for their own bodies. She hosts public and private movement classes and is the creator of Meaningful Movement, a training workshop focusing on accessibility and community within 'wellness'. Jessica creates programming and classes centralizing BIPOC communities and bigger bodies. She believes that exclusive spaces are necessary for healing and creating a greater sense of safety. Jessica also advocates for BIPOC teachers within the wellness industry. In a world of fast food, cheap packaging and easy one order clicks, it can be hard to sift through all the options and find food that not only tastes good but is good for you and the environment. There is a massive issue with today's food system, with most of what we eat being saturated in excess sugar, dye, gum, filler ingredients and preservatives. Yet, beyond all of this is a group of independent thinkers and movers who are determined to build a community based on real food! In today's episode, I am talking to Jessica Young, founder of online marketplace Bubble, an online hub that curates hundreds of snacks and food items that adhere to the strictest standards of the food industry. Jess is on a mission to connect people with food that features clean ingredients, that are producers and sources response and that actually taste good! During our conversation, Jess speaks about her experience in culinary school and as a private chef which eventually led her to start her own business. She share her insights into food accessibility and supply chain which she learned during her time at Daily Harvest, transparency in the food industry, and what she would have told her 20-year-old self before starting her own business. In this episode, we cover: Jess shares more about herself, her experience as an incubator mentor, and how she became an entrepreneur Food should be healthy and accessible Scaling, partnerships, and transparency in the food industry and at Bubble Jess's favorite health and wellness routines Sales and scale with Bubble The best advice for pivoting and starting your own business Stay connected with Jess: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jessyoungfood/ Website: https://bubblegoods.com/ Connect with Cassidy: cassidyeats.com www.instagram.com/cassidyeats
In this week's episode we are joined by Jessica Young, an artist and movement facilitator located in the Toronto area. The energy Jess brings to this episode will encourage you to ask yourself some tough questions and simultaneously wrap you in self-compassion. To start, we recognize the beautiful friendship of Jess and Hien, sparked by a shared passion for advocacy and creating human-centered spaces. Plus, we learn about Jessica's relationship to movement and how she began teaching. She also gets into the specifics of what it looks like to create a “container of care” for students. Much of this episode centers around the various levels of privileges and barriers facilitators face in yoga (and movement) spaces. Jess brings up issues around labor and compensation in studios. From prep time to volunteer hours, we also get into the studio model that capitalizes on seva, or, “karma yoga.” Hien points out how mainstream studio culture commodifies teachers, especially BIPOC or marginalized folks. We share our experiences of teaching during a pandemic and how normalizing online classes is changing life for teachers and studios. Jess highlights the realities faced by many marginalized folks and shares the difficult conversations she had with herself about recognizing her value. She also walked us through an exercise ALL movement teachers should do. (And we don't use the word “should” lightly here at TWR). We divulge some of our own experiences with studio culture, and Jess makes some brilliant points about how we're taught to view our fellow teachers. Jessica champions the idea of community over competition and shares her ideas of how we can support fellow teachers. We end with insightful honesty from Jessica about owning your mistakes and acknowledging your privileges so you can use them as resources to learn, listen, and use your voice to ask difficult questions and advocate for others. In our modern world, we have access to what seems like an unlimited amount of food. For instance, grocery stores are filled with aisles and aisles of processed foods. But real food is not limitless. Real food comes from the hard work of local farmers and independent makers. The best quality food comes in a limited quantity.Jessica Young knows well that real food is not limitless and has a solution to getting real food to the masses.Jessica is the Founder and CEO of BUBBLE. Prior to launching BUBBLE, Jessica led product and operations at Daily Harvest, the frozen food direct to consumer model, now valued at over $500M. After being in the Health & Wellness industry for many years, Jessica saw a gap in the market: brands were innovating (specifically in the health foods space), but they didn't have the right platform to launch and scale on, and so she built and launched this very platform called BUBBLE in 2019.In this episode, Jessica shares the inside scoop on BUBBLE and the future of food.Listen to this episode and learn about:Jessica giving credit and thanks to her colleague, Savraj (5:34)Acknowledging that you need the help of others (8:47)Getting people to recognize and communicate their vulnerabilities and anxieties (14:23)Empowering those who have a dream (19:31)The future of food (23:39)Where BUBBLE is headed (28:15)Jessica's message to Savraj (32:32)LinksConnect with Jessica on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessicaeyoung/BUBBLE - https://bubblegoods.com/#
