Former All-Pro Wide Receiver for the Miami Dolphins, Mark Clayton joins the program to preview the teams matchup against the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday at Levi's.
Clayton led the Sooners in receiving in 2003 with 1,425 yards, along with 15 touchdowns. He had an absurd 17.2 receiving yards average in his junior season. In the unforgettable and laughable 77-0 victory over Texas A&M in 2003, Clayton had 7 catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns. He was the 22nd overall draft pick to the Baltimore Ravens. Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep When your last name is Shula, football will flow through your veins, and that was certainly the case for Dave Shula. The eldest son of Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and Miami Dolphins icon, Don Shula, Dave would play wide receiver at Dartmouth College, before one year returning kicks with the Baltimore Colts and eight seasons on his father's Miami Dolphins' coaching staff. Dave would ultimately follow in his father's footsteps, becoming an NFL head coach himself, leading the Cincinnati Bengals from 1992-1996. In The Tank, Dave recalls what it was like to grow up as a Shula (2:28) and to be the envy of his peers as a ball boy for 1972 Undefeated Miami Dolphins (4:54), but also explains why his father blamed him for Garo Yepremian's ill-fated pass attempt in Super Bowl VII (8:23). He discusses the challenges and benefits of embracing being the son of a legend (9:57), shares the events that led him to join the Dolphins coaching staff in 1982 and ultimately becoming the position coach for Mark Clayton and Mark Duper (12:24). Dave goes on to provide emotional perspective on his Shula Bowl match-ups against his father (20:50), beams with tremendous pride in seeing his son, Chris, become a Super Bowl champion with the LA Rams (27:26), and navigates the Fish Tank Two-Minute Drill with excellence (31:20). An Official Miami Dolphins Podcast Despite an injury-shortened career that lasted just eight seasons, Dwight Stephenson is universally regarded as one of, if not the greatest center to ever play the game. The Miami Dolphins second-round draft choice in 1980 followed back-to-back national championships at the University of Alabama with five Pro Bowl appearances, 4 First-Team All Pro nods, the 1985 NFL Man of the Year Award, a forever home in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and a spot on the NFL's 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. In the tank, Dwight discusses how the Hampton, Virginia native ended up at Alabama under legendary head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant (5:55), recalls how intimidating Dolphins coaching icon Don Shula could be (9:37), reflects upon his one-armed performance against William “The Refrigerator” Perry in the team's epic 1985 victory over the Chicago Bears (16:23), explains why he often had to quiet down an excitable Miami huddle when Mark Duper and Mark Clayton were around (20:45), laments breaking Kim Bokamper's ankle (25:33) and Dan Marino's finger (29:04), and openly details the circumstances surrounding the injury that ended his storied career (40:11).
