Text:Matt 3:16-17Musik:As For Us av Randy Ray med Fernando OrtegaProducent:Susanna Némethliv@sverigesradio.se

Welcoming the Stranger: Jesus and the Marginalized

Jesus was an immigrant. Have you ever thought about that? Shortly after His birth, an angel warned His father, Joseph that Herod was seeking to kill the infant Jesus and that they should flee to Egypt. So, in literally a life-and-death situation, Joseph quickly packed up his wife and young child and left his homeland for a place he'd never been before.  He doesn't know anyone there. He doesn't have a job. He doesn't know the language. But Joseph has no choice. He has to take care of his family. And love will take all sorts of risks when that's at stake. So it was that Jesus spent the early years of His life Jesus as an exile, a refugee, a stranger in a foreign land.  You have to wonder if Jesus had a special identification with the words from the Mosaic Law that say that God “loves the foreigners” and that His people should “love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.” (Deut. 10:18-19)In the highly prejudiced, racially divided land in which He lived, how did Jesus relate to the marginalized? And what can we learn from His example? In the middle of Palestine lay the region of Samaria. Back then Samaritans were a racially mixed group that had come into being during the time of Israel's captivity. Crudely speaking, Samaritans were seen as “half-breeds,” and as such they were considered aliens and strangers in the land. To the “pure-blooded” Jews, these “border crossers” simply didn't belong. As often takes place when a group is marginalized, the Samaritans turned inward and stuck together. Over time they developed their own expression of the Jewish religion. Thus, they were seen as not only racially impure but religiously impure. As a result, they were despised social outcasts and to be avoided at all costs.  That's why the story in John 4 is so astounding. Jesus not only goes to Samaria, He encounters a woman there. And not just any woman. She was an outcast even among her own people. Ponder that for a moment.  Jesus was willing to challenge social norms and to be seen as being “soft on sin” in order to treat this woman with dignity and meet her deepest needs.  Why?  Because He recognized that she was a person made in the image of God and thus had great value. And because He did, a magnificent kingdom harvest was reaped as her friends and neighbors heard the Good News and believed.Jesus models for us a new and different way of looking at and relating to persons who are outside the circle of cultural acceptability…and that includes immigrants. There are Christians at our borders, brothers and sisters in Christ, who not unlike Joseph and Mary, have had to leave their homeland because of life and death issues.Their lives are in jeopardy either due to direct persecution or indirect starvation. And the question we must ask ourselves is, “What should be our attitude toward these fellow members of God's family?”There are also potential Christians at our borders. Men, women, and children who are loved by God but have yet to embrace or even hear of the hope that can be found in Jesus. We often speak about how we need to take the Good News of Christ to the world.  Well, guess what?  The world is coming to us and is not merely open but hungry for the gospel. Friends, is Jesus your merely Savior… or is He your Lord? And as your Lord, are you modeling your response to the marginalized after His? Text: Matt. 2:1-21; John 4:1-35Originally recorded on November 10, 2013, at Fellowship Missionary Church, Fort Wayne, IN

Easter is Over, Now What? Text: Matt. 28:18-20 Opening Statement: It's clear from all four Gospels that, after His Resurrection, Jesus is single-minded on His mission to share the good news throughout the world. Jesus fulfilled the earth-bound portion of His mission. It would soon be time for His followers to fulfill their part in the mission to take the Gospel to the nations. That was then, and this is now! The Great Commission still stands! God still expects His people to take His message to a lost world so that they might hear the wonderful words of life. I) WE HAVE A DIVINE MANDATE (v. 19) The mandate of The Great Commission is to “Go”. There are two ways we can do this. 1) It involves our Lifestyle (Matt. 5:13-16) Like salt, our life should create a thirst in people for the Lord. If He is the focus of our lives, men will see Him lived out through our lives, day by day! 2) It involves our Lips We are told to “teach”. That word has the idea of “making disciples or to instruct”. It is not enough to just show it, we must also say it! II) WE HAVE A DIVINE MESSAGE (v. 20) Jesus tells His followers to share a specific message: “…to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you…” As we go and as we tell the world about Jesus, the message we are to share is very clear. We are to share the Gospel. There is no other message that God will use to draw the sinner to Himself and there is no other message He will use to save lost souls! III) WE HAVE A DIVINE MISSION (v. 19) He tells us that we are to “Go…and teach all nations”. He is telling us very clearly that our mission is to every person in the world. If they are sinners, they are candidates to hear the message of the cross. If they are lost, they need a Savior. If they do not know Him, they need to, and we have been authorized and commanded to reach them! IV) WE HAVE A DIVINE MENTOR (v. 20) Jesus doesn't send us in to the lost world without any resources. 1) We Are Promised His Presence When you are standing there sharing the Gospel with that friend, that family member, even that total stranger, the Lord Himself is right there with you. You will never share the Gospel alone if you are a child of God! 2) We are Promised His Power The Spirit of God will take our efforts and He will use the words we share to convict the hearts of the lost. In Closing: The question we need to ask, and answer is, has “The Great Commission” become “The Great Omission” in your life and mine? Are we as a church doing everything we can to find inroads of outreach into the world around us? Or are we sitting back watching the world around us slip into Hell?

The Word for Everyday Disciples with Dave DeSelm

Three times in the Christmas narrative, angels appear to people bringing what would seem to be news of hope and promise. But each time they begin their tidings with these words: Don't be afraid. It happened to Mary, to Joseph, and to the shepherds. So, for this Christmas message, I'd like us to consider each of these characters and ask these questions:1.     What was it they might have been afraid of?2.     What steps did they have to take to overcome that fear?3.     What did they gain for having taken those steps?Let's start by looking at Mary. Mary was probably no more than 14 or 15 years old. Now here comes this angel telling her that she will become pregnant through the direct power of the Holy Spirit and give birth to a son.  Can you imagine the fear she must have felt? The fear for her reputation. The fear of the responsibility of motherhood. Coupled with those is the fear of giving birth to and caring for the Son of God.  All of these seem to come under one heading. Mary's fear: “It's too big for me.”  You and I also face “Mary moments” - when you're asked to respond to God's request to do something that seems well beyond you.  Fear warns us of all the bad things that might happen if we say “Yes” to God.  Then there's Joseph.Joseph was a skilled laborer with a solid reputation.  Probably quite a bit older than Mary, he had an established business and was known in the town as a “righteous man. What might Joseph have been afraid of when the angel said: “Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife…”?   Joseph's fear: “What will others think?” Perhaps you can identify with Joseph's fear.  “If I do what God is asking of me, what will others think?”   Finally, let's look at the shepherds.Certainly, being confronted by a host of angelic beings is enough to terrify anyone! But I think their fear goes beyond that. The shepherds' fear: “Things will never change.”You have to understand who the shepherds were. They weren't the cute bath-robed figures in our nativity scenes. They were considered outcasts of society. They were poor, transient, uneducated, and looked down upon by nearly everyone.  In giving them the message first, God was making a profound point. This good news that a Savior has come isn't just for the religious, or wealthy, or educated.  This Good News message is for folks who have lived lives of rejection. Each of these people – Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds – received an offer from the angelic messenger.  Each of them experienced fear.  And each of them took the same steps.Surrender – They chose to lay down their former way of thinking.  They stopped giving in to the lies.Trust – They took God at His Word.  Obey – Each one of them took a step.  As with them, so with us.  We won't lack for fear; but we can take steps of surrender, trust, and obedience.  And as we do, we will discover:the thrill of a deeper, more fulfilling life the privilege of participating in God's redemptive work.  the peace that God really is with us.and the joy that fear does not have to have the last word.   Text: Matt. 1:18-21; Luke 1:26-33; Luke 2:8-10Originally recorded December 22, 2013, at Fellowship Missionary Church, Fort Wayne, IN.

The Word for Everyday Disciples with Dave DeSelm

From the beginning of time, God set a rhythm into motion. A rhythm of rest and work that He knew would bring greater joy and fruitfulness for His creation. Then He modeled that rhythm for us so we could imitate Him. Six days of work and one day of rest. We call that day of rest “Sabbath,” and it is the first thing in the Bible to be called “holy.” Literally, set apart as special. In fact, God mandated this day of rest in the Ten Commandments when He said, “Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.” What if we recognized that we were hardwired by our Creator to live with this rhythm between work and rest?  What if we saw this rhythm as truly sacred – that as with other aspects of our discipleship we were really expected to honor it?  And what if we understood that in violating those rhythms we would pay dearly?  When we honor this call to rest, we mimic God so we'll remember that we're not God. Our failure to take this seriously, our refusal to stop usually stems from getting this exactly backward.  We don't dare imitate God's own rest because we are too busy trying to be God.I may proclaim faith in One who has all things under control, but my actions would seem to say that I believe it all depends on me.  And that being the case, I can't step away from work to rest. So, let me invite you to some holy imagination.  Can you imagine one day a week where you say, “This day is my gift from God? On this day it is not my job to fix the world.  It's my opportunity to rest, reflect, and rejoice.”    GETTING IN RHYTHM1.     What is it about this idea of living a life of sacred rhythms between work and rest that resonates with you? Why?2.     What is it about this idea of living a life of sacred rhythms that frustrates you?  Why?3.     What do you think God's heart is for you regarding this?4.      What do you think God might be saying to you about this?5.     What do you think God might have you do? Text: Matt.11:28-30; Gen. 1:28, 2:2-3Originally recorded June 8, 2014, at Fellowship Missionary Church, Fort Wayne, IN.
