Anika sat down with Kyle Bailey to explore why home service businesses—from roofers to remodelers—frequently struggle to gain digital traction despite having high-value expertise. The conversation revealed a counterintuitive truth: SEO isn't just about keywords; it's about understanding the "babysitter and therapist" dynamic of the trades. Kyle's transition from decades on the construction site to building a specialized marketing agency offered practical pushback against the "big-box" SEO model, alongside a sharp look at how ADHD and empathy-driven leadership can transform client relationships. In This Episode The trade floor origin story: Why sawdust and coffee are the foundation of Kyle's marketing perspective Transitioning from physical labor to virtual strategy: How "speaking the language" of the trades wins clients The "internal branding" trap: Why business owners fail when they brand for themselves instead of the customer ADHD as an asset: How neurodivergence reshaped Kyle's workflow, empathy journey, and business operations The "front burner" philosophy: Identifying what actually drives marketing success Why volume-model SEO agencies are failing the trades and how to spot predatory contracts Local SEO strategy: The importance of subdivision-level content and hyper-local relevance The role of LLMs in local search: Why "selfies at a subdivision sign" and other physical proofs matter Building a culture that lasts: Why recruiting and retaining overseas talent beats churn-and-burn cycles Timestamps 01:51 The Trades Advantage: How years of physical labor formed a blueprint for digital strategy. 05:02 The Branding Trap: Why businesses fail when they market to themselves instead of their customers. 08:57 Reframing ADHD: Turning a late diagnosis into a tool for empathy and operational success. 14:21 SEO Myths: Why the "single-page website" fallacy is killing your local search rankings. 17:28 Hyper-Local Dominance: The strategy of ranking by neighborhood rather than by major city. 21:32 The "Big Agency" Problem: Why expensive, high-volume models are failing small businesses. 27:26 Empowered Teams: The value of building long-term, human-first international partnerships. 36:40 AI Proof-Points: The specific homepage content that actually influences AI visibility. 46:58 Baked-In Values: How to ensure your core principles survive every customer touchpoint. Key Insights & Takeaways Insight 1: Invisibility Isn't a Marketing Problem—It's a Translation Problem Many home service owners struggle because they speak in internal jargon rather than the language of the homeowner. Whether it's a confusing brand logo or a website that hides information, business owners often build for themselves. The fix is to walk in the shoes of the customer who just wants their pipe fixed or their kitchen remodeled—not to explain the philosophy behind the business owner's choice of font. Insight 2: SEO is a Local, Physical Game The "big city" search volume is a trap. Home service businesses often waste money trying to rank for a massive metropolitan area where competition is fierce and relevance is low. Instead, winning happens at the subdivision level. Content that focuses on specific suburbs or neighborhoods—and provides physical proof (like photos of local work)—creates fast, high-converting wins that build momentum toward larger territory. Insight 3: ADHD as an Operational Compass For Kyle, late ADHD diagnosis was a turning point. Instead of fighting a "lazy" label, he learned to offload weaknesses and leverage his unique focus. This translated into a leadership style that favors empathy over berating. He views client and employee struggles not as failures of character, but as challenges of the "toolbox" they currently possess. Insight 4: Don't Rent Your Foundation A massive trap for local businesses is signing with "Big Box" marketing firms that lock clients into multi-year contracts and "own" their website assets. Kyle emphasizes that if you pay to build something, you should own the keys. Transparency in ownership is the hallmark of a healthy, long-term client-agency relationship. Insight 5: AI Doesn't Need a New Index, It Needs Proof AI is not killing search; it is amplifying the need for documented expertise. Modern AI models cross-reference Google's index with tangible evidence of reality. A simple sentence on a homepage detailing a thousand completed jobs in a specific area is now a primary ranking factor. AI is looking for "proof of life"—and that proof starts with your local footprint. Insight 6: Empathy is a Business Metric Whether dealing with a frustrated client or an underperforming vendor, "calling back to the vision" is more effective than arguing. By affirming that everyone is doing their best with their current toolbox, leaders can move past blame and refocus the energy on solving the problem. This empathy-first approach builds the trust necessary to sustain long-term business growth. Send us Fan MailWe're on vacation this week, so we're re-running one of our favorite April conversations. It still speaks to our current series on brand in local, and a live panel on local digital brand strategy follows next week.Cyrus Shepard (founder of Zyppy) joins David Mihm and Mike Blumenthal to unpack what the Google antitrust trial, the leaked patents, and the API leak revealed about how Google really ranks: user click data. They walk through the three signals that matter — clicks, long clicks, and the "last longest click" — why brand search keeps correlating with rankings, and what AI Overviews are doing to the click ecosystem, including how local businesses can still earn (and satisfy) the click.Practical throughout: consolidating reviews and booking onto owned surfaces, using Search Console's branded-query filter as an AI-Overviews scorecard, and why a too-clickable title tag quietly costs you traffic.Be sure to listen to our series on branding.Subscribe to our newsletters and other content at https://www.nearmedia.co/subscribe/

Send us Fan MailPart 3 of the Near Memo brand-building series brings brand down to earth in professional services — specifically legal, where a client hires once in a lifetime, can't judge quality, and every ad on the screen looks identical. Local pack ads grew from 1% to 22% of tracked searches. Joy Hawkins, owner and president of Sterling Sky, has led over 1,000 local SEO tests across nearly two decades to determine which ranking factors actually drive results for local businesses. This conversation covers why algorithmic domain-wide penalties are now hitting small businesses that scale AI-generated location and model pages, how authority signals for local have shifted toward Google reviews, active social presence, indexed Facebook groups, and third-party awards rather than link building, and why call tracking with recorded calls and integrated texting outperforms traffic metrics for measuring genuine lead quality.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Agents of Change: SEO, Social Media, and Mobile Marketing for Small Business
If you've ever felt like local search is a game rigged for the big guys with bottomless ad budgets, this episode is going to change how you think about winning. My guest, Nick Cohen, is a rare combination: a practicing attorney and the COO of Matador, where he helps over 180 law firms compete against much bigger competitors in local search. But don't let the law firm focus fool you. Everything Nick shares here about reviews, backlinks, content, and the wild new world of GEO (that's optimizing for AI search) applies just as much to your HVAC company, your dental practice, or your marketing agency. We get into why reviews might be the single highest-leverage thing you can do this month, how to figure out exactly which keywords to target with his refreshingly simple "what you do, where you do it" framework, and why showing up in ChatGPT might convert better than showing up in Google. Send us Fan MailCyrus Shepard, founder of Zyppy, joins Greg Sterling and Mike Blumenthal for Part 2 of the Near Memo brand-building series — this time on the technical side: how Google and AI systems actually model a brand, and what a local business can do about it.To Google, a brand isn't a feeling. It's an entity — an entry in a database, connected to your website, your Business Profile, and you. Cyrus walks through what strengthens those connections, why branded search volume is still the single best lever in SEO, and why the decade-old fundamentals came roaring back the moment AI systems started needing the same entity signals local search always needed. We also get into why ranking first no longer guarantees you're recommended, why Google stopped wanting content and started wanting evidence, whether llms.txt is worth your time (Cyrus says no), and the surprisingly low review threshold where a local flywheel starts turning.Plus: the cross-business referral tactic neither host had heard proposed before, and a plan involving an unreasonable number of pizzas.▶️ Be sure to listem to Part 1 of this series, with John Jantsch on small business brand buildingSubscribe to our newsletters and other content at https://www.nearmedia.co/subscribe/

Favour Obasi-ike, MBA, MS frames the discussion around the core distinction: broke (or broken) business websites vs pro (professional) business websites. Site speed, mobile performance, clean architecture, and meta info (titles, descriptions) matter much more than flashy design.Sitemaps and robots.txt must be properly configured, or Google may ignore much of your site.Schema markup is almost always missing on poorly performing sites and can boost visibility.Consistent, high-quality content (using real user questions as headline structure) increases both visibility and engagement.Organic social and SEO now interact—Google draws from your digital presence as a whole.DIY is an option, but you must invest time if you can't invest money.Monitor click-through and conversion metrics (above 2% is good; below, revisit your site's value/clarity).FAQsQ: What free tools can I use to audit my site?A: Siteliner.com checks duplicate/broken pages; GTMetrix.com measures speed; NSLookUp.io checks domain health.Q: What's the most common reason websites don't rank?A: Technical SEO issues: slow speed, crawl errors, missing/incomplete sitemaps, improper robots.txt, lack of schema.Q: Is a newsletter/blog/journal page worth it?A: Yes—having unique, frequently updated content (news, blogs, resources) helps with indexing, authority, and user engagement 00:43:10.Q: Can I get a professional site cheaply?A: Investing either time (DIY, free learning resources) or money (professionals, payment plans) is required. Q: What defines a “pro” website?A: Fast, mobile-first, well-structured, SEO-optimized, schema'd, secure, maintained, and delivers what users expect—every time.Action StepsAudit your site using Siteliner, GTMetrix, and NSLookUp to identify technical flaws (00:01:38).Create or download a checklist for on-page, off-page, technical, and local SEO (00:05:48).Clean up your site map and robots.txt.Apply schema markup to each main page (00:48:23).Ensure all key pages exist: home, about, contact, products/services, privacy, FAQ, blog/newsletter (00:13:51).Update your titles/descriptions to include search terms and local info; keep within pixel/character limits (00:29:13).Track your conversions; if below 2%, revisit clarity, speed, mobile, and copy (01:27:24).Invest in learning if budget is tight (use LinkedIn Learning, online resources) or hire a pro with phased payments.Monitor progress and repeat regular checks to maintain a “pro” business website. For more strategies, connect directly via the podcast resources shared at the conclusion of the episode.

Every orthodontist who talks to us eventually asks the same thing: how do I rank number one for "orthodontist in my city," and how do I stay there? Local SEO for orthodontists is not a single trick. It is on-page work on your website and Google Business Profile, then authority built through link building, applied in the right order for the footprint your practice actually has. This post breaks down how Luke Infinger and James, the SEO lead at HIP Creative, approach that problem on the GrowOrtho podcast. It covers where to start, why link building does the heavy lifting, which page you should be trying to rank, and how to handle the awkward cases: one location serving a dozen towns, or several offices spread across a region. The short version is that ranking is earned by closing the gap between your site and the practice currently sitting in the top spot, then out-building them on authority. Here is how that plays out step by step. Key takeaways Ranking starts on-page. Run a comprehensive audit of your live website and Google Business Profile, then a competitive analysis that identifies exactly what the number-one practice has that you are missing, and close that gap first. Link building is what builds authority and is the hardest part to implement correctly. The order is citations first, then press, then industry-relevant links. Start citations with business directories: Apple Maps, Yelp, and lesser-known local options like Yellow Book and Brown Book. Your name, address and phone number must match your Google Business Profile exactly. Which page ranks depends on locations. Multiple offices in one metro means optimizing the homepage as the hub with neighborhood location pages under it. A single office or offices far apart means powering up individual location pages instead. One location that wants to rank for many nearby communities should build neighborhood supporting pages linked from an "areas we serve" section, and research whether the town belongs to a larger market worth chasing. Optimize the Google Business Profile completely, then use GMB Everywhere to copy the categories, services and descriptions of the top-ranked competitor and run a weekly posting strategy (Invisalign for teens one week, braces for kids the next). To start backlinks locally, Google "local media kits," buy placements that produce a real article and brand mention with a link, and enter "Best of" contests run by Gannett and USA Today for social proof plus a backlink.
Most clinics are still putting nearly all of their attention on Google. And while Google is still critical, it's no longer the only place patients are searching. Apple has quietly rebuilt its entire business platform, and that shift is changing how clinics show up across Apple Maps, Siri, and iPhone search. If your clinic hasn't looked at Apple Business recently, or ever, there's a good chance you're missing visibility opportunities that are easier to capture than Google right now. Let's break down what Apple Business actually is today, what changed, and how to use it without overcomplicating your marketing.
