HEAVY Music Interviews
Battling The Blues With JOHN CORABI From THE DEAD DAISIES

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2025 20:51

Interview by Kris PetersThe Dead Daisies have always had an underlying stream of blues coursing through their music. It is an age-old style of music that has influenced pretty much every conceivable genre over the years, although rock music has benefited the most. With vocalist John Corabi coming back on deck for last year's album Light 'em Up, The Dead Daisies embraced their blues side even more, culminating in late night jam sessions while recording that album at the legendary FAME studios progressing into recording sessions which led to their new album Nothin' But Trouble, which is due out on May 30.The album pays homage to the work of blues legends such as BB King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Howlin Wolf, with The Dead Daisies reworking their classic songs and sprinkling enough of their own DNA through the tracks to make them their own. It is an outstanding body of work from a band with an impressively high back catalogue, and showcases some of the influences that have seen the members hone their craft.HEAVY caught up with Corabi to find out more."You know what I'm excited about so far is that the first two songs that we released have been getting great feedback from everybody," he began. "And as I was saying earlier, this was it was what we call a happy accident. This whole thing came about in such a weird, random way. We went to this legendary studio in America called Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, and it was kind of a bucket list thing for all of us, including Marti Frederiksen (producer). So we went down there with the thought in mind that we would just maybe write and maybe do a little bit of recording down in this legendary studio. It's a legendary place, but also it's a functioning studio, and they do museum tours through this place and each night around dinner time, they bring in 20, 30 people. So we'd take a break. And then we kind of sat and thought about it. We're like, well, okay, the tour was over. We were done eating, and we'd crack open either a bottle of whiskey or some wine. And we thought we could go back to the hotel and sit and watch TV all night, or, we're here, let's just jam. Let's see. Let's just have some fun. So we kind of started jamming some blues that everybody was familiar with, obviously, like Crossroads, Going Down, and Born Under a Bad Sign. And then it was weird, we just kind of sat, and Marti kept the session rolling. We listened and thought, okay, this is really cool. This is really cool, so what we did is during the day we worked on what became the Light 'em Up record, and we just continued working at night and putting together 10 of our favourite blues songs and so far man, everybody's been raving about it."In the full interview, John spoke more about the band's intention to honour their musical roots through a collection of blues tracks. He explained the challenges of reinterpreting classic songs, emphasizing the need to make them their own while maintaining their integrity, using When the Levee Breaks as a reference for transformation. He shared insights on the evolution of specific tracks, such as Terror Plane Blues into Take My Soul, and acknowledged the blues' influence across various genres. We talked about the process behind reworking other people's music, which songs were the easiest to do and which ones more difficult and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The Dead Daisies have been busy during the COVID pandemic, teasing fans with singles from their long-awaited new album – the first to feature Glenn Hughes on vocals.Guitarist Doug Aldrich sat down with HEAVY during the week, guitar in hand, to run us through the bands' new album Holy Ground, which will be out on January 22."We're really excited,” he enthused when asked about the release. “ We've been sitting on this for about a year now so we're really ready for it to be out."Holy Ground was originally slated for release early in 2020 so with that in mind we asked if Aldrich felt some of the material might be a bit dated after sitting on the shelf for so long."I haven't really listened to it much to be honest," he replied, "but we have also been working on more new material on top of that which is still new but I think it's more about the reflection of how people when they hear it what they think. So far our friends I've played it for love it so hopefully the fans dig it and we're looking forward to coming and playing it for you guys ASAP."The Dead Daisies released three singles in the lead up to the album, dropping “Unspoken”, “Bustle & Flow” and “Holy Ground”, with each of them displaying a different side to the bands rock psyche. Although undoubtedly and unashamedly rock numbers, each song also has a life of its own and points to a more eclectic range of music this time around."You've gotta hear the whole album and the flow”, Alridge measured. "It’s really got a great vibe to it. Originally we had planned on starting off with 'Holy Ground' to be the lead single and then when the pandemic started we basically pushed everything back and we weren't planning on putting anything out but then when we did we felt that 'Unspoken' was a good vibe for someone wanting to hear from the Dead Daisies and it gave us a song of hope during the pandemic. Then we waited a few months and we put out 'Bustle & Flow' which was really cool for the summer and now we're getting back to the original plan which was 'Holy Ground' first. I would say, to answer your question, yes and no because there's a lot deeper stuff and there's a couple of things that I think are going to be surprising for the fans when they hear it. It's a brand new start. We've got Glenn Hughes - the voice of rock - and me and Dave Lowy (guitars) and Deen Castronovo (drums) and it's a fresh start, a brand new start for this band.In the full interview, Doug talk about the album in greater detail, new member Glenn Hughes and what he has brought to the bands' sound, folding new members into the band and more significantly the bands' established sound, how new members are selected, touring plans and more.

The Dead Daisies have always been a transitional band.Throughout their tenure members have come and gone, having little effect on the band's success or output, but throughout one constant has remained. These guys know how to write great rock songs. That is never more evident than with latest single "Bustle and Flow", performed with new vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Country Communion) at the helm.Replacing John Corabi out the front, Hughes has the musical pedigree to slot seamlessly in and has wasted no time in stamping his influence on The Dead Daisies 2020.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Doug Aldridge for a chat about the new single and more."Glenn was joining the band," Aldridge began, "I've known Glenn for years and we were friends so I was really excited about it - and for me to start preparing music I started thinking about 'what would Glenn wanna hear'? 'What would Glenn wanna do'? Obviously, we all have our own style and we do the things the way we do them but I found this riff that was a little bit... had a different groove to it, and I thought Glenn would kill on this. David (Lowy, guitar) and I spent time working up a bit of a demo on it and we tossed it into the mix once the band got together and it had some good hook parts but it didn't have a chorus. So we kept working on it and rewriting and rewriting until finally, it came together. David Edwards, our manager, who's really the fifth member of the band because he in a lot of ways is the brains behind everything said he loved the song and urged us to finish it. We had rewritten it and didn't have a chorus or main hook. We tried hard and all sat there and it just wasn't happening. Finally, I went to David and said 'we've got a strong record anyway so do we really need that song'? Usually with songs, if you have to work that hard it doesn't end up working out. He said I hear you, but I really want that song. You guys better figure it out, get back in there and finish it (laughs). We were kind of... not that it energised us in a bad way but it was kind of a kick up the ass and Glenn and I came up with some chords and a phrasing that opened up and it worked out. That was a struggle to get together, unlike any other song on the record."In the full interview, Doug talks about bringing Glenn Hughes on board, adapting to different vocalists, the brilliant animated film clip to "Bustle and Flow", upcoming album Holy Ground and what to expect from it, getting back on the road and more.
