Graham Bonnet in conversation with David Eastaugh English rock singer. He has recorded and performed as a solo artist and as a member of several rocks bands including Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Alcatrazz, and Impellitteri. He is known for his powerful singing voice but is capable of also singing soft melodies. In 1979, Bonnet was approached to join Sweet to replace Brian Connolly. However, he was chosen by Ritchie Blackmore to replace Ronnie James Dio as the vocalist of hard rock band Rainbow. This was something of a musical departure for Bonnet, who had previously identified himself more as an R&B singer. Bonnet would later credit his time in Rainbow and his collaboration with Blackmore, in particular, as fundamentally changing his musical outlook to a more hard rock focus. He sang on the Down to Earth LP, which would become his most successful album. It spawned two hit singles in 1979 and 1980: "Since You Been Gone" and "All Night Long". During Bonnet's time in the band, Rainbow also headlined the inaugural Monsters of Rock festival at Donington Park, Castle Donington.

This week on America's Podcast, we've got a lineup so heavy it might just be considered a gym day! Join us as we tackle the burning question: should we be bowing down at the altar of Metal Church or kicking back to watch football on Sundays? Spoiler alert: our guests Greg Naugle and Travis Perrotta are here to argue that neither activity should include wearing pants! We titled this episode “The Human Factor” because let's face it: we're all just humans trying to figure out if our Sundays should be filled with righteous riffs or touchdown celebrations. Can you have a mosh pit in front of the TV? And if you can, will someone please tell the neighbors? No spoilers on the tracks of the week—after all, we don't want to ruin the surprise of Marc picking “Fire And Rain” by Badlands, which is basically the soundtrack for those days you remember that you left the oven on…again. Mooger's choice, “Impact Is Imminent” by Exodus, sounds like the perfect anthem for your procrastination and potential future life choices. Meanwhile, Greg's picking “Another Day” by Fastway—not to be confused with “Another Day Without Coffee,” which is honestly just a crime. Travis is cruising down memory lane with “Starcarr Lane” by Alcatrazz, which probably has more nostalgia than your old high school yearbook! And Jerry wraps things up with “Nobody's Fault” by Testament, which should be the theme music for every time someone tries to blame you for something you clearly didn't do. So grab your air guitars, prepare your best headbangs, and remember: until next week, let the music do the talking and be as nice as a metalhead can be—meaning no heavy objects should be thrown, unless it's a perfectly good air guitar!

Graham Bonnet In a career spanning nearly six decades, former Rainbow, MSG and Alcatrazz singer Graham Bonnet has firmly established himself as one of hard rock's most powerful voices and best-dressed gents. This week we return to the classroom as they go On Assignment for the 1979 self-titled release by New England. This time our teacher is Dennis Talbott from the Ages of Rock podcast. If you don't know, Ages of Rock is a fantastic music discussion show that you should check out. Dennis has plenty of reasons why he assigned us this record. He bought it as a new release and has since purchased over 20 copies! Say what?! Would we feel the same enthusiasm for this album as Dennis? You'll have to listen and find out! We give each song an A-F grade as well.New England featured band leader guitarist/vocalist John Fannon, drummer Hirsh Gardner, bassist Gary Shea and keyboardist Jimmy Waldo. The group was best known for the song "Don't Ever Wanna Lose Ya", which received heavy radio exposure on Album-oriented rock (AOR) stations and reached the US Top 40 in 1979. "Hello, Hello, Hello" also received some airplay. The quartet formed in the Boston area and was discovered by manager Bill Aucoin, who also managed Kiss. Paul Stanley helped produce the debut album along with producer Mike "Clay" Stone, best known for his work with Queen and Asia. Guitarist and vocalist John Fannon was the leader of the band. The group had a live stint supporting Kiss, but New England slid between the cracks of other Aucoin projects. The group's success stalled when their label Infinity Records was absorbed by its parent company, MCA Records.Gardner, Waldo, and Shea would go on to work with a then-unknown Vincent Cusano on a project dubbed Warrior before disbanding due to Cusano being brought into the KISS fold to replace guitarist Ace Frehley. We give each song an A-F grade as well. New England featured band leader guitarist/vocalist John Fannon, drummer Hirsh Gardner, bassist Gary Shea and keyboardist Jimmy Waldo. You could say Graham Bonnet is hard rock's greatest chameleon. Perpetually stylish and sexy with his white suits, short hair and sunglasses, he continues to be an anomaly compared to his metal peers. He was plucked from relative obscurity to front Rainbow in the late 70s, but only lasted one album before joining Michael Schenker's group where his time was even shorter. Then he created Alcatrazz which launched the careers of Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai and which he's dipped in and out of over the years. All along there have also been solo albums and the Graham Bonnet Band, which have a strong new album called Day Out in Nowhere that's worth a listen. Whether it's crooning classic r&b songs or wailing like a banshee over the hardest metal, Graham does whatever he feels like and does it well. And his stories have to be heard to be believed. He's the Metal Gentleman. www.facebook.com/grahambonnetmusic www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
