Guitarist Ronnie Simmons has spread his talents far and wide over the span of his playing career, travelling as far away as LA to play with Faster Pussycat and Richie Ramone before settling on a permanent gig with Australian rock royalty Angry Anderson and Rose Tattoo. While travelling the world doing the thing you love may seem like the pinnacle of musical achievement, Simmons had one more peak to conquer.Fronting his own band. And what better way to launch into that next phase of your career than to record a collection of tunes, utilising the help of former bandmates and good friends to herald your arrival?Rather than jumping the gun with a product that has obvious potential but nothing by which to test that mettle, Simmons decided to commit a bunch of tracks to disk for future release before making his Australian assault, recording what would become his debut EP Bite! Part 1 at One More Time Recording in Los Angeles with the backing of Richie Ramone (The Ramones) and the late Chris Moye on drums, Johnny Martin (LA Guns) on bass, backing vocals by Danny Nordahl (Faster Pussycat) and Scott Churilla (Reverend Horton Heat). With this assortment of punk-fuelled rock numbers safely recorded, Simmons returned to Australia to start gigging with his new band Ronnie Simmons & The Redback Spiders, confident in the knowledge he had a viable product to sell. With the EP set for release on November 22, HEAVY sat down with Simmons for a chat about the new band plus anything else that seemed relevant."I'm excited," he enthused when we asked how the nerves were. "I was listening over the masters this morning and I'm really psyched to release this into the world."We point out that Ronnie is used to releasing music with other bands, but with this being his first out the front of a project, the pressure is on possibly more than usual."Yeah, this is the first time in a long, long time I'm out the front doing my own thing," he affirmed. "It's a very new experience for me, putting myself out there like that. A lot of these songs are straight from the heart, so it's very different to slotting into an already existing band. I'm enjoying it. It's a lot to think about, and it's a new experience, but I think I've got enough gigs and experience under my belt to give it a solid crack (laughs)."In the full interview, we discussed Bite! Part 1, with Ronnie explaining the sound is a mix of his various musical influences, including punk, ska, and rock. We spoke about the two singles released so far and how they represent the EP, as well as the decision to record in LA. He ran through his musical journey from LA back to Australia and the advantage of playing in bands of differing styles and genres.Talk turned to the band's upcoming run of shows, with Ronnie telling us what to expect from the band live and who is in the outfit full time plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Ryan Williams, Chris O'Keefe and Dani Judith are three members of Rainbow City Park. Their love of music and exuberance of life shines in their musical output. It truly was a pleasure to get to know them. Here's the band's story from its website: "Rainbow City Park is an indie alt-rock/dream pop band from Northern California. The band draws inspiration from 90's alt-rock acts such as Third Eye Blind and The Smashing Pumpkins, infusing their music with a modern twist akin to the sounds of Boygenius and Snail Mail. Band members reside in both San Francisco and the Central Valley, converging in Sacramento for rehearsals. "Sonically, Rainbow City Park takes you on a journey through various soundscapes, from dance-inducing rhythmic sections to heavy breakdowns, to ethereal interludes where shimmering guitars blend seamlessly with the vocals. The lyrical content often delves into existential and melancholic themes, offering a stark contrast to the buoyant musical atmosphere. This juxtaposition finds its resonance with artists they admire, such as Phoebe Bridgers, Frightened Rabbit, and Pinegrove. "Fronting the band is the charismatic Dani Judith, a multi-talented artist who wears the hats of an audio engineer and music teacher when she's not playing with Rainbow City Park. The trio of guitarists, including Dani herself, Nick Nassab, and Chris O'Keefe, weaves intricate melodies that intertwine with Dani's vocals. Their signature indie-rock sound is heavily influenced by their love of Fender guitars and an array of pedals that shape their tone. The rhythm section provides the backbone of the band, with accomplished musicians Dwight Struthers on bass and Ryan Williams on drums. "As a five-piece with Dani as lead vocalist, the band released three songs in 2023: double single 'Broken Record / Dad Jeans' in May and 'Convince You' in October." In February 2024, Rainbow City Park began supporting the release of its next single, “Valentine's Day 1999,” with a series of shows throughout California.

Well, that was a bit of a shock wasn't it. It seems everyone was a bit taken aback to hear that assistant coach Leon MacDonald would be leaving the All Black's group. Less that 24 hours out from the All Blacks heading to South Africa for two Rugby Championship tests, New Zealand rugby confirmed MacDonald would not continue in the role. Fronting the media, head coach Scott Razor Robertson outlined the reasons why the decision has been made. He said there were differences around the philosophy on rugby, and how it's played, and they didn't quite click in different aspects. Razor added the went through a process, and got to this point, and they believed that Macdonald stepping away was the best thing for the All Black group. Sounds pretty straight forward right – and refreshing to hear what sounds like a legitimate reason rather than a manufactured one. It just didn't work. People have been surprised by MacDonalds departure because they two have known each other for around 27 years. They have played and worked together before, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be plain sailing – especially when you step up into the biggest, most intense job in New Zealand rugby. John Kirwan had this to say about the decision on the Mike Hosking Breakfast this morning ....Incredible courage, I believe, on behalf of both of them if it's not working out, because the status quo would be probably stay there, finish the season. But you know for them to move on this quickly, I think it's the best thing for the team. He's right. Macdonald is a very good coach, one we will probably lose to an overseas team now – but it takes courage to acknowledge if a situation isn't working, and integrity to the right thing for yourself and the team. Of course we're still keen to try and distil down what has happened here. The simple reason why this relationship hasn't worked might just come down to the fact there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Do the All Blacks need 6 coaches? Graham Henry and Steven Hansen were able to run the All blacks successfully on 3 coaches. There had been rumours that players were dealing with too many voices – this simplifies that somewhat. Another suggestion is that it's an adjustment to go from Head Coach to assistant coach. Coaches end up tripping over each other, there are mixed messages, or a coach is left feeling maligned. But regardless of the intricacies of why they have come to this decision – it's hard not to be impressed by it. Good on them for not letting it fester. Good on them for being open and honest about the fact it didn't work. It sounds like the two have departed on decent terms, and now it's time to move on. Will it have an impact on the All Blacks? I doubt it. They have dealt with much more difficult HR issues in the past, and I imagine they will be fully focused on facing South Africa. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Be Here Now under Maharajji's blanket as Baba Here Love and Marcus Rummery discuss The One, Terence McKenna, underground comics, Neem Karoli Baba, homosexuality, the gay agenda and more. It is all applied to our spiritual awakening. “Allen Ginsberg is a very close friend of mine, and for a long time, because Allen was being very much publicly gay in his writings and his writing at work, I questioned whether that was my role too. I saw along the way, because of my drug history, that I was identified by many people as being a “druggie.” I began to see that every one of these roles and labels was both a way of having a feeling of comfort in a group identity, while also being a defining concept in my own mind. I see people who have labels in their mind of who I am. I found it a little too complicated to have any labels at all.” - Ram Dass Marcus has been creative all of his life. Born to a journalist and scientist, and raised in a community adjacent to a nuclear research facility in rural Manitoba called Pinawa. Marcus' upbringing was one of dynamic creativity and radioactive inspiration. Marcus began performing stand-up comedy in 1996 in Ottawa. Then, less than a year later, he came third in Canada's Funniest New Comic contest. He has performed all across Canada and L.A., headlining in Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, toured the country twice, and been featured on XM Radio as well CBC Radio's Definitely Not the Opera and Madly Off in All Directions. In 2002 Marcus became certified to teach hot yoga, a then new practice involving vigorous exercise in an extreme environment where the heat is cranked to 40.6 Celsius and the humidity to 40%. For almost eleven years, ten times a week you could here his inspirational ranting all around Lotus Land until 2014 when he premiered Hot Prana. This new series that he calls the Crossfit of Yoga, was featured in his first teacher training in 2016. A disrupter in the space he later became the first yoga teacher to also sing and play guitar while instructing, a class he calls Cool Qi. Marcus completed his BA in psychology in 2005 and then two years later the Langara College digital documentary program, and in 2008 finished Big Medicine – The Techno-Shamanism of Frank Ogden. In 2017 he released his magnus opus film Bucket Chemistry, featuring a four-act psychedelic death and rebirth multimedia rock-show. In February 1995, after a life changing psilocybin experience, Marcus began the research that would lead to his interest in Frank's work when he started investigating psychoactive drugs - culminating in the publication of Shamanic Graffiti in 2016, with the second edition coming out this year. The first edition is featured at the Archives of Psychoactive Substances at Purdue University. In 2021 he began his master's degree in counseling at Athabasca University. Fronting the bands Evoke, All Possible Humans and In Defense of Tim Leary Marcus has operated as a vocalist since the beginning. I am very excited to share the second of a two-part conversation with author and TV/film historian, Lee Gambin. His double-volume work, "Tonight, On a Very Special Episode: When TV Sitcoms Sometimes Got Serious," provides a launch pad for our thoughtful and fast-paced discussion of the issues and activists behind TV's “very special episodes,” which date back 50 years or more. These TV events—featuring familiar, beloved characters—mixed serious topics with comedy so effectively that, in many cases, activists were born, movements were started, legislation was passed, and minds were changed. Legendary showrunners like Norman Lear and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason used the sitcom format to normalize awareness and discussion of race relations, women's issues, representation, discrimination, divorce, alcoholism and drug addiction, sexual assault, HIV/AIDS, and LGBTQ rights. Fronting these issues shaped our culture in ways that should not be lost to history. It's not every day that people talk about wars, and their fiscal, social, and political consequences...right? Much less have an opinion goaded in unfettered bias amidst the advent of the internet. ...Right? Welcome to this week's episode of The Literary Life Podcast with Angelina Stanford, Cindy Rollins, and Thomas Banks. This week our hosts share their discussion of Plato's Ion. This episode serves as an introduction on how to read Plato as well as an opportunity to consider what Socratic dialogue is and is not. Thomas gives some background on Plato as a person as well as his writing of dialogues. Angelina shares her thoughts on why the term “Socratic method” as it is used today is not actually a good teaching technique. In talking about the text of Ion, Thomas explains what a “rhapsode” is and lets us know that this piece of dialogue is supposed to be humorous, rather satirical in nature. Another background topic related to the conversation is the ancient idea of atheism in contrast to our modern definition. To wrap up, Thomas gives a few suggestions for continuing your reading of Plato. The job of the Christian parent is to be a godly parent. Christopher Yuan A few people have ventured to imitate Shakespeare's tragedy. But no audacious spirit has dreamed or dared to imitate Shakespeare's comedy. No one has made any real attempt to recover the loves and the laughter of Elizabethan England. The low dark arches, the low strong pillars upon which Shakespeare's temple rests we can all explore and handle. We can all get into his mere tragedy; we can all explore his dungeon and penetrate into his coal-cellar; but we stretch our hands and crane our necks in vain towards that height where the tall turrets of his levity are tossed towards the sky. Perhaps it is right that this should be so; properly understood, comedy is an even grander thing than tragedy. G. K. Chesterton, from Illustrated London News, April 27, 1907 Nothing stands still for us. This is our normal state, albeit the one most contrary to our proper inclination Blaise Pascal The Fall of a Soul by John Addington Symonds I sat unsphering Plato ere I slept: Then through my dream the choir of gods was borne, Swift as the wind and splendid as the morn, Fronting the night of stars; behind them swept Tempestuous darkness o'er a drear descent, Wherein I saw a crowd of charioteers Urging their giddy steeds with cries and cheers, To join the choir that aye before them went: But one there was who fell, with broken car And horses swooning down the gulf of gloom; Heavenward his eyes, though prescient of their doom, Reflected glory like a falling star, While with wild hair blown back and listless hands Ruining he sank toward undiscover'd lands.
