When two Denae's link up, you know it's something special! Aleah Denae returns to her podcast with content queen Sheree Denae (@sheree_denae) where they discuss everything surrounding long distance relationships. Both share their experiences of currently being in one, and how the art of dms landed them there. They discuss their personal pros and cons of distance and converse about whether or not long distance could be feasible for everyone. The constant projection of insecurities from outsiders surrounding cheating and the idea of distanced relationships not being able to withstand time were also debunked and decomposed. The "My Take on Music Segment" covers drops from Cordae, Pink Sweat$, Sincere Cochiese and Zae France.

As the summer comes to a close, and many return to the grind, Aleah Denae discusses the sad reality of black experiences in the workplace. She delves into the common use of microaggressions and how they may seem small or unintentional, but due to them being rooted in implicit biases they can lead to larger issues in the workplace, no matter the job. She also dissects the idea of professionalism and how it's viewed as coded language for white favoritism, through the implementation of racist dress codes and standards. Aleah Denae digs into when we try living up to this unrealistic idea of what a professional is we often find ourselves subconsciously code-switching to sound like those around us in our careers/professions. The "My Take on Music" Segment features Sincere Cochiese's new single "Rushin", Drake's highly anticipated album and Aaliyah's classic albums finally being on music platforms.
Aleah Denae discusses the world opening back up again, and how that results in the sad but true reality of an uprising in violence and crime for many cities like her own. These violent acts plague communities with repeated PTSD and leave those in the environments often unable to express and understand their experiences, triggers and paranoia. Alongside PTSD, Aleah aims to define and describe trauma responses, survivors guilt, hindsight bias and victim-blaming and she emphasizes how trauma effects everyone whether it be from gun violence, sexual trauma, grief, relationship trauma, etc. The "My Take on Music" Segment features reviews on the recent Snoh Aalegra, Mariah the Scientist, Vince Staples, H.E.R. and Doja Cat.

Aleah Denae discusses the hypocrisy and conditional nature regarding protecting black women, their bodies, their stories and their lives on all fronts. Due to April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, she speaks on how people part-time politic when sexual assault allegations are exposed, when women of color are sexually/physically violated at the hands of men of color and how it's always "fuck 12" until it shifts to "why didn't you report it?" She relates part-time politicking to optical and performative allyship and further relates it to the recent killing of and controversy surrounding Ma'Khia Bryant. Aleah urges her listeners to check their allyship, check their homies and check themselves while listening as a means of creating more awareness and ultimately a safer world for Black women. The "My Take on Music" Segment was brief, so in essence, drop more heat.

Important points to consider when speaking about trauma-informed care:We can (and should) assume that everyone we encounter has some level of trauma.Due to the neurologic reactions from prolonged and persistent trauma the brain is negatively altered which impairs an individual's ability to function. This unbalanced system can affect numerous functions such as the ability to feel empathy, academic performance, inability to regulate self, etc.The initial episode in this trauma-informed series was Episode #1: Trauma-Informed Care - A Review and Call to Action. For a firm foundation in which to build clinician strategies on, please head over and listen to that episode. This episode encourages the listener to begin their trauma-informed journey through 3 steps:Awareness (becoming aware of the prevalence and effects of trauma)Learning (gaining education and strategies to consider)Intention (putting these strategies into action, as is appropriate, in their own setting)We've narrowed down three factors of change in the process of mitigating and healing trauma:Consistency and predictabilityConnection (building positive relationships)Learning social and emotional skillsStrategies to consider within these 3 factors:Consistency and predictabilityconsistent routines and schedulesconsistent and positive routines for entering and exiting a session (classroom, etc.)consistent and predictable transitions (the space between interventions, routines, etc.)MACRO (typically those spaces where an individual is physically involved in movement - bigger shifts during the day)MICRO (typically within an activity, session, or routine)consistent and predictable physical environmentpredictable environmentclear and consistent boundariesclear and consistent expectationspredictable consequences (highlighting natural consequences for positive and negative actions - not in a punitive punishment reaction)consistent and predictable caregiver/adult emotional responseseven temper and toneclear directivesassertive tone (in comparison to a passive or aggressive tone)Connection (positive relationships)Connections to selfMuch of this foundational work happens when we address emotional and self awareness strategiesConnections to a caring adult or other individualbuilding relationships based on safety through predictable and consistent interactionoverarching relationship built on unconditional positive regardConnections to our wider communitybuilding relationally-rich environments in our families, schools and clinical settings is important to build strong and supportive systems of safety to help an individual build resilience! This may look like building relationships with parents, families, siblings, teachers, staff, and extend that to larger settings such as schools and other clinical facilities.ConsultingModeling and sharing resources to use at home/school/etc.Hosting collaborative sessions with families and siblings (when appropriate and safe to do so)and others….Learning Social and Emotional SkillsAwareness ofself within a group environmentone's own emotionsLearning strategies of regulation:sensory integration including music, movement and other sensory activities that involve the 5 senses (touch, sight, taste, smell and sound).Implementation and practice strategies in moving from state of being unregulated to a state of regulation.*Note on regulation: in order to foster healthy relationships all parties must be regulated. The 3 step process to assisting an individual to move from a state of stress to a state of critical thinking is:RegulateRelate (connect with an individual through an attuned and sensitive relationshipReason (supporting the individual to reflect, learn, remember articulate and become self-assured after an incidence of overwhelm. We will continue this discuss specifically for music interventions next month during our Music Segment (4th Monday in March).ResourcesCDC - ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) StudyNeurosequential Model of TherapeuticsStress, Trauma, and the Brain: Insights for Educators - The Neurosequential Model - VideoTo continue your education:Music Therapy Ed Course: Introduction to Trauma Informed Care for Music TherapistsMusic Therapy Ed Blog Post:Â Why Trauma-Informed Care is Essential for Music TherapistsReed-Miller Group: Trauma Informed Care Trainings and WorkshopsReed-Miller Blogs on Trauma Informed CareLet's continue this conversation:We seek to host a space for mutual learning and view these episode as the beginning of the conversation. The featured "My Take on Music Segment" includes reviews on new drops from Lil Durk, Kehlani, NAV and Lil Tjay.
