Welcome to Tigers on Tap Episode 9! TJ and Trey are here to review the Tigers' dominant win over Navy in Week 2 and preview the home opener against Arkansas State this weekend. In the first segment, TJ and Trey go through the "Good, Bad, and Beautiful" from the 37-13 win over Navy in Week 2. The good for both guys were the Tiger receivers. They thought the receivers made a huge comeback from a tough week one loss to Mississippi State. Gabe Rogers and Javon Ivory caught 12 balls for 184 yards combined. The main statistic that impressed TJ and Trey was the lack of dropped balls from the receivers. They also highlighted the defense, in particular, their takeaways. Last year the Tigers were -4 overall in takeaways, but in two games this year, the Tigers have 5 takeaways and only 1 turnover. The bad for both guys is third down conversions on defense. The Tigers are allowing opponents to gain first down yardage on third downs 60% of the time, which puts them second to last in the AAC. Trey does not like the distance in which Tiger opponents are getting for their first down. He sees that opponents getting 8+ yards on third downs could possibly be a scheme issue, but they are hoping to see the Tigers change that in Week 3 against Arkansas State. Another issue that TJ brings up is the blocking from the tight ends. The two main tight ends, Caden Prieskorn and Anthony Landphere, have shown that blocking is not one of their strong suits. The beautiful from the Navy game is Seth Henigan. Both guys are incredibly impressed with Seth's ability to throw the ball, but also to lead the team. Seth went 24-34 for 415 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Navy game. In the second segment, the guys move to previewing the Arkansas State game. Both guys are surprised by the line being -14.5 going the Tigers way. TJ believes that the line is high, but believe the Tigers will win. TJ and Trey break down the most consequential matchups in the game. They highlight the Tigers' defensive line versus Arkansas State's offensive line. This will be the first game that the Tigers are not playing against an offense that is specialized in either running or passing. Arkansas State follows most trends in football where they try to have a balanced run and passing attack. They believe this game will be a clear example of where the Tigers stand under Matt Barnes and his new schemes. Champ Fleming is a new Arkansas State wide receiver who has proven to be a consistent threat during the first two weeks. If the Tigers can contain him, both guys believe the Tigers will have an easy opportunity to slow down Arkansas State. To end the show, Trey and TJ make predictions on the game. TJ has the Gabe Rogers scoring the first touchdown for the Tigers, Eddie Lewis and Tyler Murray will win game balls, and the Tigers will win 38-28. Trey's predictions are Javon Ivory will score the first touchdown, Javon Ivory and Geoff Cantin-Arku will win game balls, and the Tigers win 41-22. Redshirt junior linebacker Geoffrey Cantin-Arku joined GoTigers247 in this episode of Off the Boards. In the first segment, Geoffrey shares how he he came to play the game of football while growing up in Quebec City, Montreal, Canada. He describes playing hockey as a young kid, but do to the expense of playing hockey he transitioned to play football as a 10 year old. Geoffrey immediately fell in love with the game and a he began to dream of playing in the NFL one day. While playing for Cégep Garneau, he decided to come to the States and attend a football camp at Syracuse University. After the camp he was immediately offered by Syracuse and joined the Orangemen. Geoffrey explains how difficult it is for young football players in Canada to be noticed and how there are so many young kids in Canada just waiting to be noticed. On top of coming to America for the first time, Geoffrey had to learn how to speak English. With French being his original language, Geoffrey explains that he had to learn words that American coaches would use with him as they coached him, but he spent quite a bit of time and energy to learn how to speak English fluently. Playing ball in America has been a huge accomplishment for him, but learning to speak English fluently in three years is something he is as proud of as anything else. In the second segment, Geoffrey shares how Memphis got involved with him after he entered the transfer portal in 2021. He explains how he was offered by Power 5 school, but made the decision to join Memphis because of the culture that Ryan Silverfield and the staff has built. His introduction to the team was with linebacker coach, Jordon Hankins, on a visit early on, and he immediately bonded with Hankins. The deal was done by the time Geoffrey and his mother made an official visit to Memphis, and he experienced the "familial" bond that the players have with each other. Geoffrey explains that his mom is the most important person in the world with him and her approval for the next school he attended was extremely important. His mother loved the staff, immediately trusted them, and also is a massive Elvis fan. Geoffrey ends the episode talking about the veteran leadership on the Memphis defense and how the camaraderie on the defense made the transition to Memphis easy for him. He specifically talked about Tyler Murray and Zay Cullens as the guys he is closest to on the team and the advances he has made in his game due to their leadership. He believes that the veteran leadership on the team has allowed for the transition to new defensive coordinator, Matt Barnes, to be as seamless as it could possibly be. He also expresses a lot of admiration for Coach Barnes and his ability to teach and share his vision for the defense in a way that makes sense for all the players. In this episode of Off the Boards we are joined by 5th year, graduate senior, linebacker Tyler Murray. Tyler joined the Tigers after playing 2 years with the Charlotte 49'ers. During his time at Charlotte, Tyler was named a team captain for the 2021 season, where he accumulated 79 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Tyler talks about how the relationships with the staff was the reason he decided to come to Memphis. Head coach Ryan Silverfield is from Jacksonville, Florida where Tyler is also from. Tyler has worked with Ryan's nephew in Jacksonville during the offseason and Tyler shared how his relationship with Ryan opened the door for him to come to Memphis but his relationship with linebackers coach, Jordan Hankins, is what sealed the deal for him. Tyler shares how his transformation from a 180 pound cornerback in high school to a 220 pound linebacker in college has been beneficial because even as he put on weight during college, he was able to utilize his footwork and ball hawking abilities in the linebacker position. In the second segment, Tyler details how important the linebacker position is in the Tiger defense, and who he expects to play a strong role this year for the defense.

Support Harper Today I’m excited to introduce Tyler Murray who I met at Bliss Fest this year. Blissfest is a music festival held in northern Michigan and Tyler was vending his handmade nylon rip-stop hammocks when I wandered into his booth. We started talking about what it’s like being an entrepreneur and the ups and downs of being your own boss. Tyler’s business is called Skyline Hammock Company and given the fact that it is based in Michigan where the seasons change and surprisingly people don’t want to buy hammocks in the winter time. Tyler explained to me how he makes a living on the offseason. Connect with Tyler Facebook Instagram Skyline Hammock Co.
