In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Dan Hesse talks with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who, in two decades as Commissioner, has built the NFL into a sports, media and cultural leader—growing the NFL to be not only America's, but the world's top sports league, with 13 of the world's 20 most valuable teams being NFL teams. Ninety-three (93) of the top 100 rated programs on American television were NFL games. Starting as an intern for Commissioner Pete Rozelle in the early ’80s, Roger became the league's first Chief Operating Officer, and he succeeded Commissioner Paul Tagliabue as Commissioner in 2006. Roger has focused on strengthening the game for players and fans alike. He prioritized improving player health and safety through new rules and better equipment, driving down concussions and other major injuries. Under his leadership, the NFL has secured consecutive, ten-year transformative collective bargaining agreements with the NFL Players Association, allowing the league to grow and thrive, enhancing pay and benefits for current and retired players and ensuring decades of labor peace. In 2021, he negotiated long-term media agreements with CBS, ESPN/ABC, FOX, NBC and Amazon, which brought Thursday Night Football to a streaming platform for the first time. He has since spearheaded groundbreaking deals with YouTube for NFL Sunday Ticket and Netflix for the NFL's Christmas games, reaching a generation of younger fans. Under Roger's leadership, an increasing number of regular-season games are played outside of the US, and he's supported the rise of flag football globally. He also moved the NFL Draft from New York to cities and fans across the country. The NBA’s 82-game regular season just wasn’t enough. Thirty teams started the season way back in October.   There were 14 teams sent home on vacation in early April.   That left 16 still playing with a hope of claiming this year’s NBA title. About those 14 losers… “Inside the NBA” TV analysts Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Shaquille O’Neal, and host Ernie Johnson, Jr. have uttered their famous “One, Two, Three…Cancun!” vacation salute to the departing teams. In case you might be wondering, the woeful Washington Wizards lost their final ten games of the season to post a 17-65 record.  They deserve the title of “Worst team in the NBA” for the 2025-2026 season. The Putrid Pacers of Indiana sputtered into second at 19-63 to finish two games behind Washington.  A bronze medal goes to the Brooklyn “Nots” for this year’s lousy 20-62 final record. A draft lottery will be held May 10 to determine the actual draft order for all 30 NBA teams.  The 14 non-playoff teams are the only ones with a chance to receive the #1 overall draft selection. A trio of top losers (Washington, Indiana, and Brooklyn) receive a 14% chance of emerging from a rather complicated set of ping-pong ball drawings with the #1 overall selection in the NBA Draft on June 23. The other teams in this year’s NBA draft lottery will be: Utah Jazz – 22-60 – 11.5% chance of obtaining the #1 pick Sacramento Kings – 22-60 – 11.5% chance Memphis Grizzlies – 25-57 – 9% New Orleans Pelicans – 26-56 – 6.8% (pick goes to Atlanta) Dallas Mavericks – 26-56 – 6.8% Chicago Bulls – 31-51 – 4.5% Milwaukee Bucks – 32-50 – 3% Golden State Warriors – 37-45 – 2% Los Angeles Clippers – 42-40 – 1.5% (pick goes to Oklahoma City) Miami Heat – 43-39 – 1% Charlotte Hornets – 44-38 – .5% The New Orleans Pelicans (who have perfected the art of losing) traded away their first round pick for 2026 one year ago in order to acquire the rights to 6’9” Maryland center Derik Queen in 2025.  Queen started about half of the Pelicans’ games this season and averaged a pedestrian 12 points and seven rebounds per game. Decisions like that are another reason why New Orleans has failed to reach the Conference finals in every year since the team’s inception in 2002. There are 16 teams participating this week in a best-of-seven first round series The NBA Western Conference produced the two teams with the best overall records in the entire league during the regular season. Defending champion Oklahoma City won 78% of its games to finish 64-18.  The Thunder are facing #8 West seed Phoenix in Round 1. The San Antonio Spurs finished second overall this year with a 62-20 record.  They are playing the 7th seed Portland Trailblazers in their opening round series. Other Western Conference match-ups include #3 seed Denver Nuggets (54-28) against #6 seed Minnesota and the #4 Los Angeles Lakers (53-29) taking on the fifth-seeded Houston Rockets. In the NBA’s Eastern Conference, the top regular season team was (are you ready?) the Detroit Pistons.  Motown’s favorite team posted a 60-22 record and is matched against East #8 seed Orlando in the opening round. The Boston Celtics played most of the season without star forward Jayson Tatum. He’s now back in the line-up for the playoffs.  The C’s finished second in the NBA East (56-26) and are playing #7 seed Philadelphia in Round 1. New York’s Knicks finished third (53-29) in the NBA East.  They are matched against #6 East seed Atlanta in the first round. The Cleveland Cavaliers came in fourth (52-30) and are playing #5 seed Toronto in another Round 1 match-up. Is LeBron James still playing basketball? Yes, indeed!  The 41-year old ageless freight train still plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.  He also still bowls-over defenders on his way to the basket – just like he always has. It’s hard to believe that LeBron James (even at age 41) has never averaged less than 20 points per game over any season of his 23 in the league. The rumor mill claims that LeBron isn’t sure whether this year’s NBA playoffs will be the last of his long career. You can be sure that NBC (which is now televising NBA playoff games this year) and ESPN/ABC will be rooting for LeBron’s Lakers to make a very deep run in this year’s playoffs. Teams which live by the 3-point shot… Did you know that the average NBA team attempted 40 three point field goals per game this season?  I found it a bit surprising that the majority of the top ten NBA teams taking the most 3-point shots did not qualify for the playoffs. The Boston Celtics (4th in the league in 3-point shots) attempted an incredible 50 3-point shots during a 111-97 home playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers Tuesday night.  Unfortunately for Celtics fans, the home team connected on just 13 of those attempts (26%). Boston took a total of 89 shots in the game.  When a team attempts more than 50% of its shots from long distance, a cold shooting night generally spells doom. Here’s your three-point shooting math lesson for today.  Anything above a 33.3% success rate from long-range creates more points for a team than those which convert 50% of traditional two-point baskets. However, attempting too many three point shots in a game may be an indicator that a team is lacking an effective inside presence (aka – a good center). For the record, the Eastern Conference #1 seed Detroit Pistons finished 29th out of 30 teams in 3-point attempts this season with “only” 30 per game.  Boston checked-in at #4 (42 per game).  Defending champion Oklahoma City was 13th with 36 long-distance tries per game. The NBA average for all shots attempted per game was 90.  That means that 44% (40 of 90) shots per game have been three pointers this season. Yes, NBA teams have become quite addicted to three point shooting. Look!  Up in the sky!  It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s Victor Wembanyama! He is 7’4” tall and hard to miss – even on NBA basketball courts. San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama just received every first place vote for the league’s Defensive Player of the Year.  He averaged three blocked shots and 12 rebounds per game this season. He’s no slouch on offense, either.  The Spurs’ third-year big man averaged 25 points per game.  San Antonio is the #2 Western Conference seed and a legitimate threat to stop Oklahoma City from repeating as NBA champions. San Antonio’s cast of characters surrounding Victor Wembanyama have been improving, too.  Guards De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle score 35 points per game between them this year. The San Antonio Spurs have the ingredients to surprise many during these two months of NBA playoff action. Does any team in the NBA East have a legitimate chance to win the title? There’s no question that the Western Conference trio of OKC, San Antonio, and the Denver Nuggets are the odd-on favorites to win the NBA championship this year.  Are there any legitimate threats coming out of the NBA’s Eastern Conference? The #1 Eastern Conference seed Detroit Pistons won only 14 games two years ago.  This season, the Pistons won 60 to claim the top position in the East. The Pistons play exceptional team defense and possess a deep bench if the team needs a burst of scoring or a fresh defender on the court.  Whether Detroit has the ability to withstand playoff pressure and adversity will be determined over the weeks to come. Boston won the NBA title just two years ago.  This team still features its “Big Three” of high scoring guard Jaylen Brown, clutch shooting guard Derrick White, and All-Star forward Jason Tatum.  The remainder of the Celtics line-up can look like a group of interchangeable parts.  Boston’s playoff experience could lead them to the NBA Finals this year. Neither Detroit nor Boston is going to be favored in a match-up vs. the eventual NBA Western Conference winner.  The Pistons or Celtics (or whichever team emerges from the NBA East) must play their best basketball of the season in the NBA Finals’ best-of-seven series just to keep it interesting. And the winner is… I feel fairly certain that the NBA Western Conference winner will emerge as the eventual league champion this season.  Last year’s Oklahoma City Thunder played better than everyone for the entire season.  They were not a surprise champion. If OKC can withstand Denver and San Antonio to win the Western Conference, they will likely bring a second straight NBA championship trophy home to Oklahoma. Hey, Notre Dame!  Listen-up, Vandy fans.  You, too, BYU! How about getting behind today’s idea which would have placed your favorite large division (FBS) college football team into a new 24-team College Football Playoff system? The latest and greatest 12-team College Football Playoff format began last year in the 2024 football season.  The howling has continued about which teams make the 12-team field and which teams don’t. Last year, it was Alabama’s fans crying about being left out.  A few weeks ago, it was Notre Dame’s fans and administrators yelling the loudest about being left out of the 12-team field. Why don’t we hear similar complaints coming schools in the smaller division FCS? The FCS (comprised of 129 teams) has a smoothly-working playoff system which includes its top 24 teams. That’s right!  They begin with twice as many playoff teams as the major college FBS group (which had 136 teams this season). This year’s FCS playoffs began with eight first-round games played on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. After the first three rounds of elimination games, the two FCS semifinal games will be played this coming Saturday.  Surprising Illinois State visits Villanova and Montana State will host intrastate rival Montana. The FCS title game will be played on Monday, January 5, 2026 at 6:30PM CST in Nashville, Tennessee on ESPN. Contrast that with the FBS and its cantankerous 12-team College Football Playoff system The larger schools haven’t even played one first round playoff game yet. Friday night will have Alabama traveling to play Oklahoma (a rematch from November 15 in Tuscaloosa won by OU 23-21).  Three more opening round games will be played this Saturday. One of Saturday’s games features yet another rematch as Tulane visits Ole Miss for the second time this year. The larger schools’ College Football Playoffs will not crown a champion until Monday, January 19, 2026! Think about this. If #1 seed Indiana should reach the championship game, the Hoosiers’ spring semester would have been underway for a full week prior to the championship game involving last fall semester’s athlete/students. That is absurd! It is a consequence when major college football conferences and universities become hooked on television money.  The networks now dictate how, where, and when their games are played. How many total games are played in the FCS playoffs vs. the major College Football Playoffs? From start to finish, the small college FCS playoffs include 24 teams. The top eight seeds receive a first round bye.  The remaining 16 teams play eight first round games to trim the field to 16.  Another eight games are played in the second round, four in the quarterfinals, two in the semifinals, and finally the national championship. That makes a total of 23 playoff opportunities for television.  The FCS winner and runner-up may end-up playing five post-season games by January 5. Meanwhile, the 12-team major College Football Playoffs have 12 teams playing “4+4+2+1” for a total of 11 games.  The winner and runner-up will play no less than three but as many as four post-season games ending on January 19. Would anyone really care if we lost the major conference championship games? To emulate the small college playoff system, the major college (FBS) current 12-game regular season would not provide for an extra week to play those made-for-TV conference championship games. Eliminating conference championship games would end the complaining from the losers of those title games. For example, look at the SEC. Why should 11-1 Ole Miss and 11-1 Texas A&M receive a week to heal-up at home after “losing” the SEC’s four-team tiebreaker for first place?  Were 11-1 Georgia and 10-2 Alabama privileged – or penalized – by participating in the SEC Conference Championship earlier this month? This season, there were nine different conference championship games being played on the weekend of Saturday, December 6. The television partners carrying those conference title games (primarily Disney’s ESPN/ABC group) can fight over who will carry our new format’s eight first-round match-ups. Raise your hand if you would really miss losing six bowl games under this new 24-team plan! Adding the 12 additional playoff teams would eliminate six annual bowl games.  Before grabbing your box of Kleenex, please remember that 26 bowl games still remain for the 52 remaining teams which finish with at least a 6-6 record. ESPN’s massive bowl-a-rama of post-season games would receive an overdue trim.  The television ratings for any first round playoff game will easily eclipse Tuesday night’s “Salute to the Military” Bowl (won 17-13 by Jacksonville State over Troy). Who would be playing in a 24-team major College Football Playoff scenario? Let’s utilize the current FCS (small college) selection and its playoff format.  I will also use the major College Football Playoff rankings to determine this year’s 24-team playoff field. Part 1 – Select the nine conference champions and 15 at-large teams based on the CFP rankings Nine conference champions – The following nine teams receive an automatic bid: American – CFP #20 Tulane (11-2) Atlantic Coast (ACC) – unranked Duke (8-5) Big 12 – Texas Tech CFP #4 (12-1) Big Ten – Indiana CFP #1 (13-0) Conference USA – unranked Kennesaw State (10-3) Mid-American – unranked Western Michigan (9-4) Mountain West – unranked Boise State (9-4) Southeastern (SEC) – Georgia CFP #3 (12-1) Sunbelt – CFP #24 James Madison (12-1) 15 At-large teams – These participants are selected from the CFP’s highest ranked remaining teams. They would have been: #2 Ohio State (12-1) – Big Ten #5 Oregon (11-1) – Big Ten #6 Ole Miss (11-1) – SEC #7 Texas A&M (11-1) – SEC #8 Oklahoma (10-2) – SEC #9 Alabama (9-3) – SEC #10 Miami (FL) (10-2) – ACC #11 Notre Dame (10-2) – Independent #12 BYU (11-2) – Big 12 #13 Texas (9-3) – SEC #14 Vanderbilt (10-2) – SEC #15 Utah (10-2) – Big 12 #16 USC (9-3) – Big Ten #17 Arizona (9-3) – Big 12 #18 Michigan (9-3) – Big Ten Part 2 – Determine the top eight overall seeds by utilizing the CFP Final rankings These teams would receive a “bye” in Round 1 and host a playoff game on their campus during Round 2 the following weekend. #1 – Indiana (13-0) #2 – Ohio State (12-1) #3 – Georgia (12-1) #4 – Texas Tech (12-1) #5 – Oregon (11-1) #6 – Ole Miss (11-1) #7 – Texas A&M (11-1) #8 – Oklahoma (12-1) Part 3 – The next eight seeds (#9-16) will host a first round playoff game on their campus This year’s first round home games would go to: #9 Alabama (9-3) #10 Miami (FL) (10-2) #11 Notre Dame (10-2) #12 BYU (11-2) #13 Texas (9-3) #14 Vanderbilt (10-2) #15 Utah (10-2) #16 USC (9-3) Part 4 – The final eight teams in the playoff field do not receive a seeding Those final eight teams (according to the College Football Playoff rankings) would be: Arizona, Michigan, Tulane, James Madison, Duke, Kennesaw State, Western Michigan, and Boise State. Like the FCS small college playoffs, first round match-ups would be based on geographic proximity and the avoidance of conference rematches from the regular season. Let’s do a little first round matchmaking.  Grab your ancient Rand McNally maps and let’s go! #9 Alabama vs. Kennesaw State (202 miles) #10 Miami (FL) vs. James Madison (1,026 miles) #11 Notre Dame vs. Western Michigan (85 miles) #12 BYU vs. Boise State (390 miles) #13 Texas vs. Tulane (534 miles) #14 Vanderbilt vs. Duke (527 miles) #15 Utah vs. Michigan (1,621 miles) #16 USC vs. Arizona (491 miles) Part 5 – The eight first round winners hit the road in Round 2 to play at Seeds #1 – 8 in the second round. Since this is the first game for the top seeded teams, match-ups would consider geographic proximity and the avoidance of replaying a conference opponent. Part 6 – The highest seeded teams would continue to host games during the quarterfinals. At this point, the top seeds will simply host any unseeded teams or any remaining team with the highest seed number (for example, #1 vs. an unranked team or #16 or #15, etc.). Rematches between two regular season opponents are permitted at this point. Part 7 – The semifinal round will be played on New Year’s Day The “Final Four” would play a semifinal game at two of the former “big” New Year’s Day bowl game sites (Cotton, Rose, Sugar, and Orange). Part 8 – The national championship game would be played one week later and rotated at one of the former “big” New Year’s Day bowl sites (not being utilized in the semifinal round) Let’s summarize these changes if major college football should adopt the small college FCS 24-team playoff concept: No more conference championship games As a result, no more squabbling about the losing teams in conference title games 12 additional playoff teams More home playoff games Generating more television interest Six fewer lower-tier bowl games What are we waiting for? The post The FBS should utilize the FCS 24-team playoff model! appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.

In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, we dive deep into the business of basketball with Sportico's sports valuations reporter Kurt Badenhausen. If you want to understand why the NBA is projecting $14.3 billion in revenue, how the new $76 billion media rights deal works, and what the future of NBA team valuations looks like, this is a must-watch conversation. Kurt breaks down how the NBA's massive new TV and streaming partnerships with NBC, Amazon, and ESPN/ABC will reshape the league for years to come. He explains why ratings matter—but aren't the whole story—and how younger audiences consuming basketball on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram play a major role in the NBA's future. We also explore the booming growth of WNBA valuations, the explosion of investment in women's sports, and why new leagues like Unrivaled, Athletes Unlimited, and the Big3 are gaining traction in ways other sports cannot. Kurt discusses: Why every NBA team will get a $40 million revenue bump Why reducing the number of NBA games is impossible How the Warriors became the most valuable franchise in sports The long-term impact of legalized sports betting and integrity concerns Why basketball is uniquely suited for alternative leagues How NIL is reshaping college sports and empowering young athletes What Juju Watkins investing in a pro team means for the future This episode is filled with insights about the economics of sports, team valuations, league strategy, and the media landscape that drives everything behind the scenes. If you love basketball beyond just what happens on the court, this conversation gives you a front-row seat to the future of the NBA, WNBA, and global hoops. Learn more about your ad choices. Gary & Shannon tear into Proposition 50 — the so-called “redistricting reform” that's really just Democrats giving Democrats more power. They break down how the measure could reshape California politics for years, the gamble Governor Newsom is making by spending hundreds of millions to push it through, and why voters should care. Plus — Trump's fiery TruthSocial post about California's voting system, a detour to the Maldives (mentally at least), and why Disney's latest streaming fight with YouTube TV has just cost millions of viewers their Monday Night Football and election coverage on ESPN / ABC.

On this episode of Majority Rules, the gang starts off with everyone's favorite topic, Mizzou Baseball, which leads to a lengthy discussion between the group about whether Bieser should have gotten fired and how short KJ's leash is given the woeful season. Matthew and Sammy also have thoughts about the new turf announcement, Sam Horn's debut, and predictions on if they will win an SEC game this season. Rory is back and joins the group in real-time to talk all things Mizzou Tennis & Golf. Bianca Turati has done a really nice job with the tennis team this season, and the golf teams continue to shine under coaches Millican (men's) and Westrup Gaeta (women's). Since Karen has been focusing on gym, both Matthew and Dylan handle the softball updates, as they recap the pretty good (?) A&M series, which included yet another W over another no. 1 team. They discuss playing through injuries, postseason expectations (or not), and Madison Walker raking. Abigail then joins via video update with a quick recap of all you've missed in Mizzou Track & Field. There also were a lot of updates for out of season sports, as WBB continues to make news. Players with no eligibility are entering in the portal (insert Succession "You are not serious people" gif here), Harper lost the only incoming freshman recruit, but really, there's a lot of be excited for. The group chats briefly about who she's brought in, and how this is a sneaky good class that just needs a couple more pieces. Matthew shares volleyball and wrestling updates while Karen's wifi goes off the rails, before returning with all awesome news out of Gymnastics. There's so much to talk about from this incredible season, and it's all exciting (and somewhat infuriating regarding ESPN/ABC disappearing the team & some suspect scores) as they have left a mark on Mizzou history. Rory wraps up with a swim transfer update, and the team talks about Larissa Anderson's breaking social media post on the way out. Never a dull moment with this group and Majority Rules. It's a HUGE culminating week for the NCAA Men's and Women's Tournaments, as the respective Final Fours will take place in San Antonio, TX and Tampa, FL this weekend. And, we're ready to discuss lots about it on the newest "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast."Host T.J. Rives returns with takes on this past weekend's coverage and of course, some updates on the ratings. First what about the "Cooper Flagg Effect" for Duke helping the CBS/Turner audience numbers? And, just how big will the Saturday night semi in San Antonio with Houston be? T.J. has some thoughts. He also discusses the women's ratings and the expected dramatic dropoff from the humungous audience last year for Iowa's Caitlin Clark and her games. It's still a solid product on TV for ESPN/ABC, but there's now confrmation for good that Clark meant 4 and 5 times more audience for her games last year. There's more analysis on this. Then, T.J. talks the start of the MLB season and the coverage on ESPN, the tributes to the late Milwaukee Brewers great broadcaster Bob Uecker and the disastrous first A's game in Sacramento that saw technical problems plague the night for their first game in their temporary home against the Cubs.Next, a fascinating discussion on the announcers in this year's tourneys and leading to the all-time broadcasters to work a men's Final Four and a look ahead to whom are calling the Final Fours this weekend at the two sites. We do this with Phil de Montmolin, who's a great historian of it all and use to co-host the Announcer Schedules Pod with Mike Gill on this feed. T.J. and Phil reminisce on some great Final Four broadcasting nostalgia of their own, too.Catch it all on the "LWOS Media Podcast" and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple/Spreaker/Spotify, etc.!
