Rabbi Yossi Morozov grew up in Brooklyn and was on shlichus with his family for twelve years in Ulyanovsk, a city one thousand kilometers east of Moscow. After being forced to leave Russia, Yossi moved with his family to the Pomona area in New York and became a life insurance agent. In this conversation we discuss his choices to go on shlichus and then into business and the challenges these choices posed to his own Lubavitch identity.
On 26 February, Russian forces west of Avdiivka destroyed the first M1A1 Abrams tank of the war. Like the loss of the first Challenger 2 near Robotyne last September the event has provoked widespread commentary. This article seeks to establish the facts and draw lessons. Even after two years of war, no NATO army has seriously addressed the threat to its armoured fleets - not just tanks - from the revolution taking place on the frontlines of Ukraine from the proliferation of cheap drones. Unless thought is given to this problem, every tank fleet faces the same fate as the M1A1 Abrams examined in this article. What happened - the Ukrainian side of the story On 17 February, Ukrainian forces withdrew from Avdiivka following a four-and-a-half month battle. This battle, incidentally, cost the Russians 224 tanks, according to the dedicated Oryx analyst who started counting the losses when the assaults started in October. 47 Separate Mechanised Brigade (47 OMBr) had been defending the flank north of Avdiivka. Following the withdrawal, the brigade fell back from the contested rail line and front line village of Stepove and took positions two kilometres west in Berdychi. Both settlements exist only in name as they have been wholly destroyed. 47 OMBr had previously distinguished itself in the Robotyne sector during the 2023 summer counter-offensive. Over this period the brigade was supported by Leopard 2A6s from a separate tank battalion as its organic tank battalion was delayed in Germany training on a batch of M1A1 Abrams. The organic tank battalion was only finally taken under command on 23 February this year. Two days later the first YouTube video of an M1A1 Abrams appeared on the internet. The following day the loss occurred. On 26 February, two Russian assault groups had broken through the defence line of neighbouring troops. A forward position was in danger of being surrounded. In the words of 47 OMBr 'Thanks to the actions of the crew of Abrams, Bradley, artillery strikes and drones of the 47th brigade, two Russian assault groups were destroyed, and our infantrymen withdrew.' In this action, the Bradley killed eight helpless Russian infantryman dropped off by a BTR-82A with cannon fire. The fleeing vehicle was then destroyed by an FPV drone. The M1A1 Abrams was fitted with ECM but it did not work. The Ukrainians speculate the reason was frequency changes on the command link of the Russian FPV drones. Crews had attempted to fit protective 'grills' but without success due to 'the features of the tank design'. This has generally been true of all the Western-supplied tanks, in comparison with Russian tanks that are now rarely observed without fitted 'barbecues' (the protective grills or screens). What happened - the Russian side of the story The Russian unit involved in the attack was the Recce-Strike Group from 15th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle1 commanded by an individual with call sign 'Kolovrat'('Spinning Wheel'). The drone pilot was an individual with call sign Rassvet ('Dawn'). In his words, 'We found the target and went around him from behind. It [the FPV drone] hit the rear part. The tank was stopped first.' Attacking the turret rear has become the standard tactic of drone pilots on both sides. The strike caused an exterior fire. The crew baled and abandoned the tank. A second drone was then launched. The second strike caused an ammunition fire and the tank burned out (but did not detonate catastrophically in the manner of Russian tanks). The FPV drone used in the attack The M1A1 Abrams was a victim of a Piranha-10 FPV drone costing around 50,000 roubles ($500). (The Challenger 2 last year was hit in the engine compartment by a Lancet loitering munition; this also started a fire). The Simbirsk Design Bureau (SKB) 'Piranha', based in Ulyanovsk, makes two variants of the Piranha - Piranha-7 (2.5kg warhead) and Piranha-10 (4.5kg warhead). At first, SKB Piranha copied Chinese FPV drones. Today it manufactures purely indigeno...

The Volga begins as a small trickle in the Valdai Hills in the north of Russia, and broadens and expands as it heads south, past the storied medieval cities of Tver, Kostroma, and the great trading hub of the nineteenth century, Nizhniy Novgorod, down to Kazan, the capital of Muslim Tatarstan, then Ulyanovsk, the birthplace of Vladimir Lenin, on to Samara, site of the great peasant revolts led by Stenka Razin and Yemelyan Pugachyov. From there, the river flows down to Volgograd, better known as Stalingrad, where the Red Army pushed back the seemingly unstoppable Nazi offensive during World War II, and finally down to Astrakhan, where the Mongol invaders kept their court until Ivan the Terrible conquered the city in 1556. Then, finally, the mighty river empties into the Caspian Sea. So much of Russian history has played out on the banks of this mighty river. The Volga cleaves European Russia from north to south and divides it from east to west, and for centuries, the mighty Volga has challenged and inspired Russians in their quest for expansion, modernization, and self-identification. The river and its role in Russian history is the subject of a new book by Professor Janet Hartley, Emeritus Professor of International History at the London School of Economics: “The Volga: A History of Russia’s Greatest River” (Yale University Press, 2021). The Volga: A History of Russia’s Greatest River (Yale UP, 2021) examines the role of the river in Russia’s development as a political and economic power, but also the river’s enormous impact on Russian culture and national identity. Though the structure of the book is chronological, Hartley brings in the major events of Russian history as convenient mile markers, but it is the compelling narrative of social history which pulls us into the slipstream of the book. Several through lines emerge in Hartley’s account of “Mother Volga.” The river divides Russia from East to West, and often this division plays out in stories of contrasts: Muslim versus Christian, outlaws versus the state, pirates versus traders, and invading armies pitted against each other. But the river also unites Russia along the North/South axis, acting as a conduit for trade, culture, and political ideas. As Russians struggled through the centuries with their national identity, the Volga offered a potent symbol and cultural touchstone, which was amplified in poetry, painting, song, and later famously in sculpture. Though the river is most commonly evoked as a “mother” figure, Hartley points out that throughout Russian history rulers have often sought to “tame” the Volga: Ivan the Terrible famously had the river whipped, and contemporary poets portrayed the river as a supplicant to Catherine II as she expanded the borders of the Russian empire. Hartley also takes us inside twentieth-century attempts to tame the Volga, which have resulted in lasting environmental harm to the life-giving river, and leaves us hopeful that the generation now coming of age will take on the challenge of redressing this damage. Janet Hartley is Professor Emeritus of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she worked for over 30 years. Jennifer Eremeeva is an American expatriate writer who writes about travel, culture, cuisine and culinary history, Russian history, and Royal History, with bylines in Reuters, Fodor's, USTOA, LitHub, The Moscow Times, and Russian Life. I have written quite a few articles on the spread of Sanatana Dharma/Hinduism in Russia. Lake Baikal is Vaikanasa Theertha, Rig Vedic Mandala City in Russia, Russia is sthree varsha, Amrvathi, the capital of Indra, the chief of Devas was in Russia, Yagnyavalkya lived in Russia, Lord Krishna's son, Pradhyumna founded a city Port Baijin, Russis, The Vedas were called Santi Veda,….. River Moksha is found in Russia….. Narada Mountain called as Narodnya Mountain is found in the Urals, There is evidence galore. I had also written on a Vishnu idol being found in Russia. Now there is more evidence on this idol of Lord Vishnu. The idol is from a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu Hari, a Form of Lord Vishnu. Russian archaeologists agree to the spread of Sanatana Dharma in Russia but are divided on the issue whether the Sanatna Dharma had spread from India to Russia or it is the other way around. I will be writing on this issue in detail ‘Moscow, January 4: An ancient Vishnu idol has been found during excavation in an old village in Russia's Volga region, raising questions about the prevalent view on the origin of ancient Russia. The idol found in Staraya (old) Maina village dates back to VII-X century AD. Staraya Maina village in Ulyanovsk region was a highly populated city 1700 years ago, much older than Kiev, so far believed to be the mother of all Russian cities. (http://www.indiamike.com/india/india-travel-news-and-commentary-f80/ancient-vishnu-idol-found-in-russia-t30550/) ‘ Kashmiri king, Lalithaadhitya Muthapeeda of Karkoda lineage (AD 724 to AD 760)conquered Sthree Rajya and established there a temple for Narahari (Vishnu). This information can be found inRaja Tarangini of Kalhana. After winning Sthree Rajya he went to Uttar Kuru. This king did not yield to the lure of the beauty of the women of SthreeRajya and hence earned a name “Indriyakraaman”. His grand son, Jayapeeda also had gone to Sthree Rajya and established his rule. What is of interest to us is the discovery of a statue of Vishnu in Staraya Maina (in Samara) …. This statue was dated at 8th century AD, the same period when Lalithadhitya Mukthapeeda established a Vishnu temple in Sthree Rajya. From this it can be known that today's Straya Maina was the Sthree Rajya of olden days.' Streetcar in Ulyanovsk reimagined by Alëna Korolëva. "I tried to give a voice to a dying streetcar, to hear music behind its rattling and squeaks. I used a notch filter and layered some tones, and this tune appeared a bit sad. "A few old streetcars with the model Tatra T3 were made in between the 60s and 90s in Czechoslovakia and are still operating in Ulyanovsk, Russia. I grew up in this city and commuted to school using this type of streetcar every day."
"An old streetcar is slowly moving through streets of Ulyanovsk. Announcements from loudspeakers, rattling of broken doors, squeaks of brakes." Recorded by Alëna Korolëva.

Target is to win recognition from the international public and begin to play on tours. Let`s check! Stay Rave! #R13

The next Avenue Red podcast comes from Egor Kuchepatov, the second DJ on the series (after Kammerton) who hails from the Russian city of Ulyanovsk. DJ'ing since 2007, Egor's musical passions range from dub techno to deep, minimal, melodic house and techno sounds. His mixes never cling to any specific genre or musical era, as you can hear from his many diverse podcast releases on his own podcast series called DHAR:MA and on others such as the awesome Hello Strange from Russia, Caranday from Argentina and several others. Clearly a hard worker with a great collection of music to divulge and man, his transitions are expertly crafted! "This mix was recorded on a rainy, melancholic evening when the soul is required of warmth and pleasure. Feel like dancing... the walls, the whole world is in constant motion around you, millions of thoughts per second rushing through the consciousness. At this point you can only go with the flow and try to extract something new... music is the best way to capture this. I bid you pleasant listening!" It's New Years Eve 2014 and we have just managed to get to our 30th episode thanks to the handy-work of Kammerton (real name Stepan Chernov), a diverse musical talent who hails from the Russian city of Ulyanovsk, located on the Volga River 900 kilometres east of Moscow. Now living in Moscow, Stepan is an accomplished pianist, kapellmeister (chapel master/director of a choir), electronic music producer, DJ, sound engineer, sound designer for films & cartoons and he also runs the video podcast www.friendly-vibes.com, which is as he puts it: "for all lovers of warm groove and high spirits". Stepan has played at many clubs across central Russia and has held residencies at Moscow clubs Shanti and Propaganda and also on RTS.FM Moscow. He first caught our interest with his slick production work, most notably the amazing Take Me For Granted EP from 2012 that was released on Housewax, from which the track "A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats" was played on Avenue Red Radio show 004: https://soundcloud.com/avenue-red/radio-show-004. This mix is a mega deep, dark and groovy session of mysterious House and Techno, with lots of new music featured. Crank it on at high volume for your NYE celebrations, and be sure to download a copy... you may find that this mix really grows on you! "This mix is written spontaneously, one Sunday evening. I felt the need to unwind and leave the house. Quickly gathering my DJ bag, I went to a nice friendly bar in my home town of Ulyanovsk where I could play at any time. The venue did not want anything too active and energetic, the more so because it was Sunday, so I played deep and groovy styles. In recent times, I have found that I absolutely do not want to drink alcohol and I have been getting into different tea drinks, such as oolong. It gets me into an amazing deep meditative state and it helps me to really swing it in the mix."
