Lamy was EU trade commissioner in the early 2000s, and he served two terms as director-general of the World Trade Organization from 2005 to 2013. He is also vice-president of the Paris Peace Forum and has numerous books to his name about Europe, geopolitics, geoeconomics and global governance.

My guest today is Yasemin Saltuk Lamy, Head of Investment Strategy at Legal & General (L&G), a London-based multinational financial services and asset management company. And believe it or not, her investment journey started when she was only 18.Back then, she had been dreaming of studying in Senegal to experience a French-speaking African economy. But then, the University of Pennsylvania's study abroad office made her an offer she couldn't ignore: a $12,000 scholarship to study in Scotland.For most students, that would have been a no-brainer – they would have spent it on books, rent, or maybe a bit of travel… But Yasemin saw it as an investment opportunity.She did the math, figured she could live on $6,000, and put the rest into high-growth equities. It was 1998, the height of the dot-com boom. Her investment skyrocketed – until the bubble burst. Long story short, it took nearly a decade just to break even.It was a tough experience at such a young age, but a powerful one. Watching markets rise and fall, she realized she wanted to understand the bigger picture – how economies impact people's lives.And she had a strong background for that. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Yasemin grew up between two worlds. After a military coup d'état, her parents moved the family to the U.S., settling in Rhode Island.Every summer, she returned to Turkey, experiencing firsthand the stark economic contrasts between her two homes. In the U.S., she valued independence and opportunity. In Turkey, she saw the power of family networks and community-driven economies.But it wasn't until she moved back to Turkey as an adult that she truly felt the financial instability of inflation. She then abandoned her plan to pursue a Ph.D. in pure mathematics and instead studied financial mathematics at King's College London.After starting out as a high school math teacher, Yasemin moved into finance, bringing with her a strong focus on leadership and impact. At J.P. L'armée française a rétrocédé jeudi sa dernière base militaire à l'armée tchadienne. Le départ du camp Kossei de Ndjamena, vient boucler une présence militaire française historique au Tchad. Cent cinquante ans d'une présence militaire continue.1885, c'est « la course aux clochers » selon la formule de l'époque, rappelle l'historien Christian Bouquet, trois colonnes militaires françaises s'élancent alors à travers l'Afrique, « Une qui partait du sud, une qui partait de l'ouest et du Sénégal et l'autre qui partait du nord, c'est-à-dire d'Algérie. Et c'est celle qui venait d'Algérie qui a rejoint les autres, d'abord au niveau du Lac Tchad et ensuite au niveau de la bourgade qui allait devenir Ndjamena, après s'être appelée Fort-Lamy. C'est cette dernière colonne en fait, qui avait été impressionnée par les fameux guerriers du désert. Alors à partir de là, il y a eu une certaine admiration pour ces gens qui se battaient et qui n'avaient pas peur de mourir ». Le préfet-méhariste Jean ChapelleDes décennies durant, Lieutenants et capitaines français, véritable colonne vertébrale d'une administration coloniale, vont façonner l'immense territoire tchadien et l'indépendance, dit Christian Bouquet, n'y changera rien, « Après l'indépendance de 1960 et pendant trois ans, toute l'immense région nord du Tchad, c'est-à-dire le Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti, avait comme préfet un colonel français, le colonel méhariste Jean Chapelle. Et puis ensuite, assez rapidement, à la fin des années 60, l'instabilité était grande et on a fait revenir cette fameuse mission de réorganisation administrative en 1969. C'est le général De Gaulle qui a accédé à la demande de Tombalbaye (François Tombalbaye, dit Ngarta Tombalbaye, 1er président de la République du Tchad) et on a renvoyé des administrateurs coloniaux, souvent dans leurs anciens postes, pour essayer de rétablir l'ordre ». Le Tchad va servir de creuset à l'armée françaiseOpération Bison, Tacaud puis Manta contre la Libye du Colonel Kadhafi. Les opérations extérieures au Tchad se multiplient dans les années 70. De 1984 à 2013 l'opération Épervier, la plus longue, fut décidée pour protéger les régimes d'Hissène Habré et d'Idriss Déby face aux groupes rebelles. Le Tchad au centre du grand jeu, même l'opération Barkhane au Sahel avait son État-Major à Ndjamena. Tous les officiers français y sont passés se souvient le Colonel des troupes de Marine Peer de Jong : « Le Tchad, c'est une partie de ma jeunesse ! Mais aussi la jeunesse de tous les officiers français. La professionnalisation de l'armée française vient en partie des combats de 1969 au Tchad, parce qu'on avait la Légion étrangère, mais il y avait des besoins, donc il a fallu professionnaliser une partie de l'armée française, dont le 3e régiment d'infanterie de Marine. Et donc cette construction autour de Tchad a fait qu'évidemment l'histoire de l'armée française s'est inscrite dans l'histoire du Tchad. Il y a un vrai attachement, et puis c'est un pays magnifique. En plus, le nord, le sud, vous faites 100 km, vous avez un paysage différent ! En termes géostratégiques, on voit bien que le Tchad est déterminant, qui est au Tchad, peut rayonner dans l'ensemble de l'Afrique. On voit bien l'utilité pour l'armée française d'être présent au Tchad ». Une relation étroite entre les deux arméesEntre le Tchad et l'armée française, c'est une histoire intime relève l'historien Christian Bouquet, « C'est quelque chose qui relève de l'émotion. Il y a tellement eu d'opérations et d'interventions militaires françaises sur ce territoire, qui en plus est un territoire géographiquement très attachant avec cette zone sahélienne et toute cette zone saharienne.
