He was born Michael Tivolis in 1470. In his early youth he traveled to Italy, where many scholars had fled to preserve Hellenic culture despite the fall of Constantinople. After completing his studies in Florence, he went to the Holy Mountain in 1507 and entered Vatopedi Monastery, where he received the name of Maximos. Ten years later he was sent to Russia in answer to a request of Grand Prince Basil Ivanovich, who sought someone to translate works of the Holy Fathers on the Psalter, as well as other Church books, into Slavonic. Maximos completed this work with such success that he was made to stay in Russia to correct the existing translations (from Greek to Slavonic) of the Scriptures and liturgical books, and to preach. His work aroused the jealousy of some native monks, and Maximos was falsely accused of plotting against the Prince. In 1525 he was condemned as a heretic by a church court and banished to the Monastery of Volokolamsk, where he lived as a prisoner, not only suffering cold and extreme physical privation but being denied Holy Communion and the use of books. One day an angel appeared to him and said 'Have patience: You will be delivered from eternal torment by sufferings here below.' In thanks for this divine comfort, St Maximus wrote a canon to the Holy Spirit on the walls of his cell in charcoal, since he was denied the use of paper and pen. (This canon is sung on Pentecost Monday in some Russian and Serbian Monasteries). Six years later he was tried again and condemned to indefinite imprisonment in chains at a monastery in Tver. Happily, the Bishop of Tver supported him, and he was able to continue his theological work and carry on a large correspondence despite his confinement. He endured these grim conditions for twenty years. Toward the end of his life, he was finally freed by the Tsar in response to pleas on his behalf by the Patriarchs of Constantinople and Alexandria and the intervention of pious Russian nobles. He was received with honor in Moscow, and allowed to carry on his theological work at the Lavra. The Tsar Ivan IV came to honor him highly, partly because the Saint had foretold the death of the Tsar's son. When the Tsar called a Church Council to fight the doctrines of some who had brought the Calvinist heresy into Russia, he asked St Maximos to attend. Too old and weak to travel, the Saint sent a brilliant refutation of the heresy to the Council; this was his last written work. He reposed in peace in 1556, aged eighty-six. Not long after his death, he was glorified by the Church in Greece as a Holy Confessor and 'Enlightener of Russia.' In 1988 (!) he was added to the calendar of Saints by the Moscow Patriarchate.

He was born in Tver in 1272 to Prince Yaroslav Yaroslavovich, who was the brother of St Alexander Nevsky (November 23). Michael was brought up in the faith by his mother, who later became a nun. Such was his fervor that from childhood he was certain that he must end his life either as a monk or a martyr. He succeeded his brother as Prince of Tver in 1285, and later became Grand Prince of Vladimir, the Russian capital during the Mongol conquest. When Prince Michael lost the throne of Vladimir through the plotting of his kinsman Prince George, his advisers urged him to go to war against George; but he preferred to lose power rather than to subject his people to bloodshed. When George attacked Tver itself, Michael took up arms to defend it, and was victorious. One of his prisoners was Princess Agatha, George's wife and the sister of the Tatar Khan. When she died in captivity, the full wrath of both George and the Tatars was aroused against Michael. The Prince knew that the only way to avert catastrophe for his people was to go to the Golden Horde to be judged at the Khan's court. Michael's kinsmen and advisors knew that such a course would surely lead to his death, but none were able to dissuade him from going to save his people. Michael was kept prisoner with a wooden yoke around his neck, and subjected to many humiliations by the Tatars. But as he awaited his sentence he remained calm, spending his days in chanting the Church services and the Psalms. On the night of 21-22 November he had a revelation of his impending death. He attended the Liturgy, took Communion, and embraced his family. Then, opening the Psalter, he read the words Cast thy burden on the Lord, and He will sustain thee: He will never permit the righteous to be moved (Ps 54). He then calmly greeted his kinsman George and his minions, who pounced on the Prince and ran him through with swords. Prince Michael's relics were returned to Moscow, then translated to Tver in 1320. When the city was besieged in 1549, St Michael appeared to the inhabitants in the form of a mounted knight, armed for battle.

A Ukranian drone appears to have blown up a massive weapons depot which lead to the biggest explosion in Russia since the beginning of the war. Toropets is north west of Moscow meaning it was a long range attack, something that Putin just warned last week would lead to a direct war between Russia and NATO. This is a declaration of World War 3. The images of the explosion are apocalyptic and further prove that the west WANTS a war with Russia, just like it wants a war with Iran in favor of Israel. The escalation in recent days is beyond irresponsible. All the same, it's how the script is playing out. The world is being thrown into a deadly global conflict that will lead to emergency orders and therefor eventually the "Great Reset." This was always the goal. Total technocratic enslavement. Millions will die and emergency restrictions will be forced upon people. Power will shift from the west to the east and the new power structure will already be in place as it was planned this way all along. North Korea just shot missiles around Japan. China just shipped weapons to Russia. Cellphones and pagers are exploding in Lebanon thanks to Israel. This is only the beginning and people need to prepare themselves accordingly. Now. 2024-09-01 | We are enabling a lottery of death to take place in Ukraine, daily, and it's both stupid and immoral. Our timidity must stop, otherwise Russian aggression will only escalate. ---------- Ukraine has conducted the largest drone assault on Russian infrastructure of the war so far. Fires are reported at two power plants and oil refinery in Moscow region, with 158 Ukrainian drones targeting multiple regions, including Moscow, Tver, Voronezh, Tula, Kaluga, Bryansk, Belgorod, Lipetsk, and Kursk, according to officials and residents. The attacks follow Russia's concerted attempts to degrade and destroy energy infrastructure in Ukraine, to make cities unliveable and create misery for its citizens. The scale of the strike suggests a significant advancement in Ukraine's drone capabilities. 158 was the number of drones reported by the Russian Ministry of Defence, so the true number of drones may be even higher. It is an enduring frustration when multiple media outlets begin their stories with quotes from Russian officials, who invariably lie. ---------- Sources and recommended reading: https://kyivindependent.com/russia-claims-dozens-of-ukrainian-drones-targeted-moscow-other-regions/ https://kyivindependent.com/russian-forces-wiping-off-kursk-oblasts-sudzha-ukrainian-commander-says/ https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/09/01/russian-energy-sites-targeted-in-mass-overnight-drone-attack-a86217 https://www.kyivpost.com/post/38278 https://novayagazeta.eu/articles/2024/09/01/kyiv-targets-15-regions-in-massive-overnight-drone-strikes-on-russian-energy-infrastructure-en-news https://kyivindependent.com/russia-attacks-kharkiv-injuring-at-least-28-including-medic/ ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. The New Yorker:https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/563029/cue-the-sun-by-emily-nussbaum/Elises anbefaling:Mirakelet i Gullspång, svensk/norsk dokumentar tilgjengelig i NRKs nettspiller.Aksels anbefaling:Tegneserieutgivelsen Lagon Revue. Irina Galeeva works as a neurologist (specialization: headaches and back pain) and a somnologist (sleep disorders). She works as the chief specialist at the Rassvet evidence-based medicine clinic in Moscow, this is one of the first evidence-based medicine clinics in Russia. Evidence-based medicine is based on research, unlike many common treatments such as acupuncture and homeopathy. She had to go through a long journey as an evidence-based doctor, since medical universities often teach outdated and unproven methods. At first she worked in the “vascular center” in Tver with patients with strokes, then in the emergency department of a large clinic in Moscow, only after 7 years, right before the pandemic, she got a job at Rassvet. She wrote a popular science book, “Brain Blow,” about the functioning of the nervous system. She popularizes science through her blog on Instagram @doctor_galeeva and gives lectures.

In the current context, where Vladimir Putin justifies his war against Ukraine by insisting on an inevitable, unbroken teleology that binds Kyiv to Moscow, he need to critically reexamine such interpretations is painfully evident. Christian Raffensperger and Donald Ostrowski's book The Ruling Families of Rus: Clan, Family and Kingdom (Reaktion Books, 2023) takes a brave and important step in that direction by charting a history of Kyivan Rus' through the framework of a history of families. The Ruling Families of Rus is not polemical; rather, through an erudite and trenchant exploration of the region's history through local families and the marriages that manifested their priorities and strategies, this book reveals a fascinating history that brings us much closer to how ruling elites at the time approached and understood their world while also including women in histories that have often been told by “reading past” the roles women played. In short, this fascinating examination of the development of Rus, Lithuania, Muscovy, and Tver and their relationships with the Mongols, Byzantines, and others reveals a history close to the sources and quite different from the one Vladimir Putin tells. The Ruling Families of Rus will appeal to scholars interested in the medieval history of eastern Europe. It contains beautifully produced illustrations and contextualized stories that will be a treasured resource for those who teach about this region and period.

The Ukrainian president Zelensky says Kyiv had nothing to do with a plane crash in which the Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin is presumed to have died. So what are the implications for Mr Putin's grip on power and the war in Ukraine? Also in the programme: the clash between Republican presidential candidates in a debate without Donald Trump; and Japan finally releases the water from the Fukushima's nuclear plant causing concern for some. Con AFPThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3279340/advertisement
Yevegeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenary army, is reported dead in a plane crash near the city of Tver, just north of Moscow. Earlier this summer, Prigozhin led an armed mutiny in an attempt to oust the military leadership within Russia's Ministry of Defense. And, makeshift chairlifts that bring kids to school in remote, mountainous regions of Pakistan are a local solution to a common problem: the scarcity of roads and buses. Also, belching and farting from cows is responsible for a worrying amount of greenhouse gas emissions every year. Ireland is facing up to the fact that having so many cows may be detrimental to the country's climate goals. Plus, a controversy over Adolf Hitler's house.
