As a special THANK YOU to our Patreon community that keeps the showing going through these tough times, Andrea shares her “hot sauce” for making art. The core spice is this: Don't be afraid to be interesting. Sometimes there might be a temptation to self-censor, to play it safe, to adhere to external pressures real or imagined. Instead, go within and create based on what's true for you. That's what the world needs from you now. To use this guide, watch the video of the workshop, then read through the worksheet that outlines the step-by-step process: for Patreon subscribers you can find that worksheet linked here. Or you can listen to the guide as you would any podcast. Whatever works for you is what works! As a follow-up to this workshop, we'll gather in the new year for a live virtual event to talk through our projects, share ideas and insights, and support each other in our creative process. The goal is to protect our mental hygiene, enhance our intuition, and stay creative in a time of rampant gaslighting by idiotic destructive forces determined to demoralize us. We obviously won't let that happen. For any questions or to share notes on your own process, leave a comment below or write to Andrea at GaslitNation@gmail.com. To check out the first ever Gaslit Nation Make Art workshop, subscribe to the show at the Truth-teller level or higher on Patreon by signing up at Patreon.com/Gaslit. You'll receive all episodes ad free, special invites, and more! Dan Berry is a cartoonist, illustrator, podcaster and educator based in the town of Shrewsbury, UK. He is a frequent collaborator with the author David Gaffney and is currently working on the follow-up to The Three Rooms in Valerie’s Head; a book called Rivers. Since 2012 he has produced the podcast Make It Then Tell Everybody in which he has spoken to over a hundred and sixty other artists about what they do and how they do it. Between 2008 and 2019 he was the Programme Leader for the illustration, comics and children’s books degree courses at the School of Creative Arts, Wrexham Glyndwr University. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/danberry In this episode, Dan discusses: -His fascination with being able to create something that puts ideas and images in other people’s minds. -Being hospitalized from the extreme stress he experienced working as a designer for a marketing agency. -His decision to quit teaching. -How everyone has different responses to stress, and the value in being able to determine your own. -The large amount of work that you can get done in one hour. -The stress level of effort and “half-assing it” to aim for a B-grade instead of an A. -Why he called his podcast “Make it then Tell Everybody.” -Illuminating the “grubby underbelly” of the creative process. -The BMX story and the false belief that growth in your career has to come from the outside. -Telling people about your work, both old and new. -Some of the resistances that his guests have experienced. -How he gets past “page fright” – the fear of the blank page. -How he interacts with his ideas and why he is wary of the ones that come into his head fully formed. -Why he draws people as birds. -The experience of drawing an entire comic in 24 hours and other forms of “stunt drawing.” Dan's Final Push will inspire you to forget about making the thing perfect. Save that for the next one. Quotes: “It was a good and fun job. Up until the point it wasn’t.” “Creativity is not a muscle that you can just flex. It’s also a gland and you’ve got to relax it.” “I managed to convince myself that everything else was stressful aside from the thing that actually was.” “You could be the best artist on the planet, but if you’re only drawing in your bedroom and never showing anybody, you basically don’t exist.” “I had this belief that any growth in my career had to come from outside.” “Trying to remain enthusiastic about something that isn’t representative of your current level of ability is difficult.” “If it exists, then you’ve done it right.” “Once you have something that exists, you have something that’s editable.” Links mentioned: Make It Then Tell Everybody | How artists do what they do Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud The Three Rooms in Valerie's Head by David Gaffney and Dan Berry Dick Rivets & Other Stories by Dan Berry Connect with Dan: Website / Podcast / Store / Twitter On the next episode: Emilija Angelovska : Podcast / Website Join the discussion in the Facebook group!
For Four-Color Flashback 2019, Paul and Arlo are venturing beyond the realm of superheroes and into the wide world of comics many Americans never visit. To first appreciate comics, though, it’s important to understand their capabilities. There’s nowhere better to turn than Scott McCloud’s seminal 1993 tome Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. It’s an academic, analytical study of the comics form--but it’s also a friendly, entertaining, flat-out fun read. Paul and Arlo discuss why everyone should read Understanding Comics, how it influenced the way they read comics, the concept of closure, and the digital revolution. Next: witchcraft, murder, and all that jazz in a musical Geek Challenge. Arlo must watch Disney’s 1971 Angela Lansbury vehicle Bedknobs and Broomsticks, while Paul is tasked with 2002’s Renee Zellweger showcase Chicago. We’re back, babies! Gobbledygeek returns for its 10th season--though not its 10th anniversary, get your math right--with our hosts doing the bare minimum to keep this thing afloat. The centerpiece is an anxiety-fueled story about chicken wings, for gods’ sakes. Meanwhile, Paul went to Disney World again and lived to tell the tale. Arlo has thoughts on Jason Reitman directing the next Ghostbusters film. Beards are soothed. Y’know, the usual. Plus, Paul has seen Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse once for each season of the show! Next: Four-Color Flashback 2019 gets off to an early start, as our year of non-superhero fare kicks off with Scott McCloud’s non-fiction classic Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. Today's theme: Webtoon Korea's webtoon industry is a fast-growing business. But in recent years, people have been speaking up about the working conditions of webtoon artists. Lezhiin Comics, one of the most popular/Korea's first paid-service platform, has been the center of the controversy. Webtoon artists have staged protests in front of the company's building denouncing Lezhin's alleged ‘blacklist' and other mistreatment of the artists. We look into the potential and problems Korea's webtoon industry holds. The Conversationalist with 이종범(LEE Jong-beom) best known for his webtoon Dr. Frost which was also adapted into a TV series He is also a board member of the Korea Webtoon Artist Association. “Our stance is quite simple. Lezhin must issue an earnest public apology regarding the problems that have gone on for several years. Only then can we discuss specific solutions” & 장혜원 (a.k.a 돌배작가) Chang Hye-won (penname: Dolbae) known for her webtoons 샌프란시스코 화랑관 (San Francisco Hwa Rang Kwan) and more recently 계룡선녀전 & Elaine Ramirez Seoul-based journalist specializing in technology, startups, business and contributor for Forbes Asia. “Can you give us a glimpse of how platforms can build a business model around webtoon service overseas, by giving us some prominent examples?” Webtoon is a part of this K-wave, Korean pop culture contents gaining popularity abroad. We're seeing trends like Korean developed PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds being played worldwide, or megahit webtoon Love Alarm winning Netflix original remake. How can tech companies ride this wave?” Media Monster "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art" by Scott McCloud Next week: Plagirism
Cartoonist and theorist Scott McCloud has been making and thinking about comics for decades. He is the author of Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. This classic volume explores formal aspects of comics, the historical development of the medium, its fundamental vocabulary, and various ways in which these elements have been used. Scott McCloud breaks down some of the universals in comics and guides us through some of the comic books that pushed the art form forward. Then we use that lens to look at graphic communication in the world at large. Speech Bubbles: Understanding Comics with Scott McCloud

Mike would like to talk with you about snikt. And sploorp. And butcher some French while he’s at it. Today’s subject is onomatopoeia and the visual representation of sound, particularly in comics.
