Kritika H. Rao, Shveta Thakrar, Roshani Chokshi, and Ram V are helping to create a new genre. They use elements of their Hindu backgrounds to write fantasy books primarily aimed at a Western marketplace. I talked with them about the challenge of drawing on a diverse religion of beliefs and gods that many Western readers and publishers might be unfamiliar with. Our panel discussion also turned out to be an opportunity for the authors to bond over their favorite deities, the Hindu comics they grew up reading, and the questions they've faced about who gets to tell their stories.  Roshani Chokshi writes the middle-grade series, Aru Shah, and she's the author of The Star-Touched Queen trilogy of YA novels. Kritika H. Rao is the author of The Surviving Sky, which will be part of The Rages Trilogy. Shveta Thakrar is the author of Star Daughter and The Dream Runners.  Ram V is a comic book writer, and the author of the graphic novel, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. It's Ladies' Night on Gobbledygeek! What do these two films have in common? They're both about transformation, of course! In Lady Bird, Saoirse Ronan transforms into a young woman ready to take on the big city; in Ladyhawke, Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer quite literally transform into a wolf and a hawk, respectively. The guys finish off the year by discussing another one of Steven's favorite reads from 2021, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. Written by Ram V, with artwork by Filipe Andrade, the story of Laila Starr takes readers on a philosophical journey while exploring humanity's understanding of life and death. With humanity about to discover the secrets to immortality, the God of Death is no longer needed in the heavens, and is reincarnated on Earth as Laila Starr. Instead of enjoying her life as a mortal, the newly reincarnated God of Death instead tries to stop the person who will give humans immortality. Will Laila Starr be successful in defeating the inventor of immortality? Or will she be forced to endure many deaths while on Earth? Listen in to find out what makes this unique comic book one of the best to come out this year!
