Adrian Crawford presents The New Rules Podcast

What happens when a person becomes more committed to the persona than the person underneath it? In this episode of The New Rules Podcast, Adrian Crawford and Bri explore the tension between authenticity, fame, identity, art, culture, leadership, and emotional pain. Using Drake, Justin Bieber, Sam Altman, Jay-Z, and Søren Kierkegaard as case studies, they unpack how people create personas to survive pain — and what it takes to create a life that truly matters. This conversation dives deep into: Why people dissociate from themselves The emotional cost of fame and influence Drake's "villain era" and what it reveals about modern culture Why responsibility is essential for growth Art as therapy, meaning, and legacy The danger of creating for applause instead of truth How technology, AI, and power reshape identity The role suffering plays in becoming authentic What it means to make your life a work of art Why slowing down and reflecting matters more than ever This is a conversation about becoming who you actually are — not who the world rewards you for pretending to be. Why Do I Keep Building Empires When I Just Want to Make Art

Extraordinary Creatives

Do you ever ask yourself, why do I keep inventing massive projects when all I really want to do is make my own art? Why do I keep building infrastructures for other people when what I actually crave is to be in the studio, in rehearsal, on a stage? And why, at the end of these enormous, impressive undertakings, do I feel quietly resentful? If this lands in your chest, stay with Ceri and learn how to avoid this trap KEY TAKEAWAYS Impressive collaborative projects can be draining. Yet they feel far safer than standing there with one vulnerable artwork and saying, “This is enough.” - Empire projects offer access, validation, funding, titles - a sense of being legit. When you're the organ grinder, the monkey, the organ and the music, something shifts. You stop making decisions based on creativity. You start making decisions consciously or unconsciously based on compliance. It's not that big structures are bad - some people are meant to build institutions. If you are not one of them, ask - If there were no funders, partners, or applause, what would I still make and what would I stop building altogether? – then, create the pieces you really want to make. BEST MOMENTS “Maybe the next bold move is not another empire. Maybe it's a small, precise, unapologetic piece of work, one performance, one painting, one body of work, one show. No Empire required.” “If you grew up believing art alone couldn't sustain you, building an infrastructure can feel like the sensible compromise.” “Collaboration can be electric. Working with people at your level or beyond, can sharpen you, stretch you make you braver.” “There's a difference between building something because it genuinely expands you and building something because you're trying to fill a gap.” PODCAST HOST BIO With over 35 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events. She has sold artworks to major museums and private collectors and commissioned thousands of works across diverse media, from renowned artists such as John Akomfrah, Pipilotti Rist, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Vito Acconci. Art is the place where you can hold everything. The pain, the healing, the strength. When you move through hard currents, creativity reminds you that there are still glimmers of light through the darkness. - BrandiI had the pleasure of meeting Rose at an Art Workshop that we held on the Island last summer, so here she is with her full story on the podcast: In this powerful episode, I chat with Canadian artist Rose Currie from Vancouver Island about how creativity can be a lifeline through life's hardest battles. Rose shares her journey of surviving cancer twice while raising three sons as a single mother and returning to art as a form of healing. Her figurative paintings of a woman with “flowering bruises” explore strength, vulnerability, and the body's reawakening. Rose turned her personal struggles into a deeply moving exhibition, sharing her story of resilience through her work. Her art reminds us that even in the darkest currents, creative expression can help us process pain, find footing, and connect with others in meaningful ways. Two Takeaway Tips1. Let your art hold what life feels too heavy to carry alone.Creativity can be a powerful place to process pain, healing, and growth. When you allow your work to be honest, it often resonates deeply with others.2. It is never too late to claim your creative path.Rose began university at 29 and finished in her early 30s. Sometimes life experience gives you the perspective to appreciate your creative journey even more.

A single question can power a lifetime of work: Why do I make art? Ty and Nathan sit with Ursula Von Rydingsvard's stark and generous answers—woven from anxiety, labor, faith in process, and the stubborn hope that making can heal—and use it as a mirror for our own practices. From the first splinter to the last pass of the saw, we look at how big work invites big stakes, why the best days feel like discovery, and how the studio becomes a container strong enough to hold whatever we bring into it.We dig into the creative toggle between object and process: when materials feel right but the method frays, and when the method sings but the object won't land. That friction is feedback, not failure. Ursula's line about having confidence in the possibility of seeing the work through reframes ambition without guarantees—an artist's version of resilience. We also talk about self-doubt as a companion rather than an enemy, and how studying our heroes deeply—films, books, museum visits—feeds our own artistic DNA without imitation. There's a human infrastructure behind monumental art. Ursula's assistants form another kind of family, proof that leadership in the studio is its own craft. We reflect on daily rhythm, showing up without perfect conditions, and making pieces that may outlive us—which is how work reaches into the future. The conversation edges into generational pain and the unanswerable questions art dares to hold. Answers are rare; presence is everything. If you've ever needed permission to trust the process and keep going, consider this your sign.If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a creative nudge, and leave a quick review—tell us your “why” so we can feature it in a future Q&A.Make sure to check out "Art from the Outside" and the amazing interview they had with Ursula: Spotify    AppleSend us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg Watch the Video Episode on Youtube or Spotify, https://www.youtube.com/@JustMakeArtPodcast

In this episode of Sync Music Matters, I sit down with Jenn Anderson-Miller, a leading voice at the intersection of music, technology, and rights, to explore how How AI Is Reshaping the Music Industry from how music is made to how creators are protected. About Jenn Miller - How AI Is Reshaping the Music Industry Jenn Miller is the CEO and Co-Founder of Audiosocket, a forward-thinking music tech company revolutionising how music is licensed and used in media. With over 15 years of experience helping shape the music licensing landscape, Jenn is also the host of the insightful new series, Equitable Solutions for Creators in an AI Era. Jenn has participated in the DOJ Copyright Roundtable Sessions and recently moderated a SXSW panel on the future of music rights management. She brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and real-world experience to the urgent conversation about How AI Is Reshaping the Music Industry. Traditional AI vs Generative AI: What's the Difference? We begin by unpacking the difference between traditional AI, which powers tools like recommendation engines and music data analytics, and generative AI, which can now create entirely new compositions, lyrics, and even synthetic vocals. What does this mean for artists, composers, and rights holders. Will AI Replace Human Composers? Can generative AI replace human composers? That's one of the key questions we explore. While AI is capable of generating music at scale, Jenn emphasises the emotion, humanity, and lived experience that only human creators bring - the very qualities that make music truly resonate. We also examine whether the rise of AI-generated content will push audiences to seek out more authentic, human connection through music and what that might mean for the future of music. Rights Management in the Age of AI A major focus of our conversation is the evolving world of music rights management. As AI tools become capable of generating content that mimics real artists or samples existing work, who owns the rights to AI-generated music? Jenn shares her expertise on the legal and ethical implications, the need for updated rights frameworks, and why protecting creators is more important than ever. Key Takeaways: AI will transform music workflows, but human creativity remains irreplaceable. Emotion and authenticity are the core of what makes music meaningful. The industry must modernize rights management systems to address AI's impact. Advocacy and equitable solutions for creators are key to shaping a fair future. From Jan 2024. Dive into the provocative world of artistic "theft" as Ty and Nathan explore how creative innovation truly emerges from our influences. This conversation challenges the myth of pure originality, arguing instead that the greatest artists throughout history have been masterful collectors and transformers of ideas.Beginning with Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto's transformative quote—"Start copying what you love... at the end of the copy you will find yourself"—the duo examines how creative development flourishes through strategic borrowing. From Quentin Tarantino's open acknowledgment of film references to David Bowie's musical influences, the most distinctive voices often emerge from those who've absorbed the most diverse inspirations. They unpack wisdom from creative legends including Jim Jarmusch, Paul Schrader, and Jean-Luc Godard, who all emphasize that true originality lies not in where you take ideas from, but where you take them to. Art movements throughout history—from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism—evolved through artists stealing ideas from each other while working side by side, proving that innovation rarely emerges in isolation. What distinguishes mere imitation from transformative theft? When does copying become finding your voice? The conversation offers practical advice for artists at every stage: diversify your influences, document what moves you and why, maintain an "omnivorous" approach to inspiration, and create systems to capture ideas when they strike. Ultimately, the episode makes a compelling case that the most authentic artistic expression comes not from avoiding influence, but from embracing it wholeheartedly.Follow us on Instagram @ty_nathan_clark and @nathanturborg to continue exploring how creative influences shape artistic development.Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg

How, you may be asking?  Perhaps you have your chart, and all you see is a circle with a bunch of lines going every which way.  Actually, your chart represents a vibrational/ energetic frequency.  To use a contemporary description, each of us possesses a unique personal "GPS" signal that is broadcasting out into the world and to the Universe. The key here is that you and I were born with a powerful magnificence as shown in our charts. But there's one thing missing.  In many instances we have been misdirected and told that we have to rely on the whims and ego-driven will of other people, who don't know themselves( or their charts)...so they surely cannot provide you with Soul and life direction. With this cosmic event, a Solar Eclipse in Aries, along with planets, Venus, Mercury  and Neptune, we are being encouraged, supported and inspired to be open and acknowledge the seeds of our new visions and dreams.  Time to create a new story for yourself.Another question is rising.  I hear you saying, "how can I dream anything in the midst of all the emotional turbulence, mental unrest, and the total dismantling of daily life that seemingly is being spawned by soulless and spiritually bankrupted leaders?Begin to learn your vibrational signature.  Your chart through the planet Mercury presents you with your unique way of communicating, tell the truth about what you are witnessing and feeling. Your truth telling may be to one person, or maybe you feel called to march or meet with others.  Venus  in your chart is asking you to take a look at how you are loving and valuing yourself, because this is the only way to have love in your life. Neptune is your relationship to your spiritual essence as it connects to Source, however you define the "Source".Practice Soul Wholeness and Align with Truth Everyday.Make Art:  https://linktr.ee/monicathecreativebeast Let's have an Astrology Conversation. Forrest Dickison, a fine artist and author, joins Will Spencer to discuss his new children's book, "Crispin's Rainy Day," and the unique artistic journey that brought it to life. The conversation explores the essence of creativity, emphasizing that everyone possesses some artistic talent and can find fulfillment in expressing it, regardless of their medium. Dickison shares insights into the importance of recognizing one's gifts and using them to glorify God, while also reflecting on the moral complexities often found within the creative world. As they delve into the process of creating "Crispin's Rainy Day," Dickison highlights the balance he achieved in portraying the dynamic relationship between the book's siblings, Crispin and Rose, without resorting to stereotypes. The discussion touches on the challenges of maintaining artistic integrity in a world that often prioritizes commercial success over genuine expression. Listeners are encouraged to embrace their failures as essential learning experiences and to cultivate a thick skin in the face of critique, ultimately recognizing that the true value of art lies in its capacity to bless and inspire others.Takeaways: Forrest emphasizes the importance of recognizing and cultivating one's artistic gifts for God's glory. The creative process involves trial and error, and artists should focus on delivering value to their audience rather than seeking personal praise. True artistic growth comes from accepting constructive criticism, which provides valuable insights for improvement and learning. Balancing character roles in storytelling, particularly in children's books, can highlight both feminine and masculine strengths effectively. Creating art is a discipline that requires consistent practice, much like sports or other skills, to achieve excellence. Artists should aim to make their work about blessing others rather than seeking validation for themselves. CONNECT WITH FORRESTBuy "Crispin's Rainy Day" on Canon PressTwitterInstagramWebsite

Every dictator or wannabe dictator relies on a base of support to stay in power. For Putin, Orban, and Trump, their base is Christian nationalism – claiming God wants white, straight "Christian" men to rule, even if this means violently stripping all others of their human rights. (Nevermind what Jesus actually taught in the Gospels about loving thy neighbor!) The Republican Party has been taken over by Christian nationalists backed by American and Russian oligarchs, in a death cult commonly known as MAGA. Trump is the strongman they've been searching for over decades of laying the groundwork for turning America into a dictatorship. Here to break it down for us is veteran filmmaker Stephen Ujlaki, who delved into the terrifying game plan of Christian nationalists for his new film, Bad Faith, out April 26 and available for pre-order. Gaslit Nation listeners who host viewing parties of Bad Faith with their friends and family can send us a photo or email to GaslitNation@gmail.com about the event for their chance to get Gaslit merch and other fun prizes, to help spread the word about this important and urgent film. This week's bonus episode, exclusively for our subscribers at the Truth-teller level and higher on Patreon, will cover Iran's attack on Israel, why Ukraine must receive the same protection as the U.S.-led coalition that defended Israel, especially as MAGA continues to block aid in the House, and reports of Paul Manafort's work for Trump in the 2024 election. We're also launching today a NEW chat group, inspired by our recent Make Art Workshop: The Business Side of Things, to complement our current general chat group, called Victory. The Art is Survival chat group is for artists in our community to share their works in progress, discover resources, and join with a community of like-minded creatives envisioning a world beyond the dictatorships the fascists want us to believe are inevitable. Thank you to all the artists out there and those who support art for believing that another world is possible! The recording of the Make Art workshop will be published Saturday May 4th, along with the transcript and a list of resources.  To get access to both chat groups – Victory (the general chat group) and Art is Survival – all bonus shows, all episodes ad-free, exclusive invites to events, and more, be sure to sign up at the Truth-teller level or higher on Patreon.com/Gaslit. Warning: If you prefer to watch a film with a blank slate, don't listen to this episode if you haven't seen or read Killers of the Flower Moon. While it doesn't give away spoilers or information that isn't widely known, and the film itself will be a powerful discovery given the stunning directing, acting, and musical score, it does prepare you for an unforgettable experience with a crash course on the brutal history.    Andrea and Terrell Starr of the essential Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack have been watching the rich offering of Best Picture Oscar contenders, and have a lot to say about Killers of the Flower Moon. While it was eclipsed by buzzier films like Oppenheimer and Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon is a monumental masterpiece that explains how America was founded and the forces we are up against today. No one should be surprised by Trump. Trumpism is what founded our country.    Killers of the Flower Moon reminds us of the urgent importance and power of art. To get inspired to make art and bring your projects across the finish line, join us for the Gaslit Nation LIVE Make Art Workshop on April 11 at 7pm EST – be sure to be subscribed at the Truth-teller level or higher to get your ticket to the event!    For more on the threats to our democracy and how to confront them, including the State of the Union and the GOP's trad wife Handmaid Tale response, listen to this week's episode, out Tuesday. In the meantime, watch the video in our show notes below of Alabama Senator and Gretchen from Mean Girls, Katie Britt, being interviewed by James Lipton of The Actors Studio.    To our supporters at the Democracy Defender level and higher, submit your questions for our upcoming Q&A! Remember when Jared Kushner tried in late 2016 to establish a secret back channel to talk to Russia? Jared and Ivanka ran the Trump transition team, with Paul Manafort operating from the shadows, where he blooms like mold, pretending to have taken a step back to avoid the heat of, well, having been outed by a Ukrainian investigative journalist for being a highly paid Kremlin operative. The latest back channel between the Trump Crime Cabal and Russia is Hungarian strongman Viktor Orbán, the Tiger Beat idol of CPAC. This Friday, on International Women's Day no less, Orbán and Trump will meet at Mar-a-Lago, where America's nuclear secrets get their own cabana. For months now Gaslit Nation has warned that Orbán is the new Manafort, the Kremlin's guy to make sure Trump comes to power, making their shared autocratic dreams come true. As Trump's coup against our democracy continues, Andrea discusses Trump's blatant shadow foreign policy with Russia mafia expert Olga Lautman and analyst Monique Camarra of the Kremlin File podcast, and the many challenges and bold action needed for democracy to fight encroaching authoritarianism, before it's too late.  The sharks are circling, with China setting up police stations in Hungary, a European Union state. Will our democracy survive? As always, it comes down to us, as grassroots power is the most reliable power we have left. See the all new Gaslit Nation 2024 Survival on our homage – GaslitNationPod.com – for simple ways for us to pitch in as it's all hands on deck!  Fun announcement for our Gaslit Nation community! On April 11 at 7 pm ET we're holding another MAKE ART workshop exclusively for our subscribers at the Truth-teller level and higher on Patreon.
