From Jan 2024. Dive into the provocative world of artistic "theft" as Ty and Nathan explore how creative innovation truly emerges from our influences. This conversation challenges the myth of pure originality, arguing instead that the greatest artists throughout history have been masterful collectors and transformers of ideas.Beginning with Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto's transformative quote—"Start copying what you love... at the end of the copy you will find yourself"—the duo examines how creative development flourishes through strategic borrowing. From Quentin Tarantino's open acknowledgment of film references to David Bowie's musical influences, the most distinctive voices often emerge from those who've absorbed the most diverse inspirations. They unpack wisdom from creative legends including Jim Jarmusch, Paul Schrader, and Jean-Luc Godard, who all emphasize that true originality lies not in where you take ideas from, but where you take them to. Art movements throughout history—from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism—evolved through artists stealing ideas from each other while working side by side, proving that innovation rarely emerges in isolation. What distinguishes mere imitation from transformative theft? When does copying become finding your voice? The conversation offers practical advice for artists at every stage: diversify your influences, document what moves you and why, maintain an "omnivorous" approach to inspiration, and create systems to capture ideas when they strike. Ultimately, the episode makes a compelling case that the most authentic artistic expression comes not from avoiding influence, but from embracing it wholeheartedly.Follow us on Instagram @ty_nathan_clark and @nathanturborg to continue exploring how creative influences shape artistic development.Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg
Does staring at a blank canvas sometimes cause you to question your abilities? Many artists (even those you admire) struggle with self-doubt and imposter syndrome, and the current chaotic world only amplifies those feelings. But what if the only thing holding you back is the mere thought that you aren't an artist? In this episode of the Savvy Painter Podcast, we'll dismantle the myth of the "real" artist and explore why waiting to embody this ideal is a waste of time. You'll discover how imposter syndrome can signal that you're in the wrong environment (not the wrong career), how external stress fuels self-doubt, and how to regain control of your thoughts and stop looking for permission to be the artist you truly want to be.3:15 – Challenge your inner critic who thinks you're not a real artist10:33 – Re-define for yourself what it means to be an artist 14:00 – The importance of identifying who you want (and don't want) to support you 17:54 – The power of choosing to embrace imperfection and uncertainty22:38 – Questions to ask when in self-doubt about your status as an artist Mentioned in How to Make Art When You Don't Feel Like an ArtistThe Work of Byron KatieJoin Growth StudioSupport the show

In this episode, I present some ideas, questions and thoughts about walking through the portal of this brilliant New Moon Solar Eclipse in Aries. We are being offered a powerful opportunity to embrace the wisdom, wholeness and uniqueness that is revealed through our astrology chart blueprints.Every person's chart provides directions, options, clues, insights and even the ways and means for navigating our personal and collective experiences. How, you may be asking? Perhaps you have your chart, and all you see is a circle with a bunch of lines going every which way. Actually, your chart represents a vibrational/ energetic frequency. To use a contemporary description, each of us possesses a unique personal "GPS" signal that is broadcasting out into the world and to the Universe. The key here is that you and I were born with a powerful magnificence as shown in our charts. But there's one thing missing. In many instances we have been misdirected and told that we have to rely on the whims and ego-driven will of other people, who don't know themselves( or their charts)...so they surely cannot provide you with Soul and life direction. With this cosmic event, a Solar Eclipse in Aries, along with planets, Venus, Mercury and Neptune, we are being encouraged, supported and inspired to be open and acknowledge the seeds of our new visions and dreams. Time to create a new story for yourself.Another question is rising. I hear you saying, "how can I dream anything in the midst of all the emotional turbulence, mental unrest, and the total dismantling of daily life that seemingly is being spawned by soulless and spiritually bankrupted leaders?Begin to learn your vibrational signature. Your chart through the planet Mercury presents you with your unique way of communicating, tell the truth about what you are witnessing and feeling. Your truth telling may be to one person, or maybe you feel called to march or meet with others. Venus in your chart is asking you to take a look at how you are loving and valuing yourself, because this is the only way to have love in your life. Neptune is your relationship to your spiritual essence as it connects to Source, however you define the "Source".Practice Soul Wholeness and Align with Truth Everyday.Make Art: https://linktr.ee/monicathecreativebeast Let's have an Astrology Conversation. Forrest Dickison, a fine artist and author, joins Will Spencer to discuss his new children's book, "Crispin's Rainy Day," and the unique artistic journey that brought it to life. The conversation explores the essence of creativity, emphasizing that everyone possesses some artistic talent and can find fulfillment in expressing it, regardless of their medium. Dickison shares insights into the importance of recognizing one's gifts and using them to glorify God, while also reflecting on the moral complexities often found within the creative world. As they delve into the process of creating "Crispin's Rainy Day," Dickison highlights the balance he achieved in portraying the dynamic relationship between the book's siblings, Crispin and Rose, without resorting to stereotypes. The discussion touches on the challenges of maintaining artistic integrity in a world that often prioritizes commercial success over genuine expression. Listeners are encouraged to embrace their failures as essential learning experiences and to cultivate a thick skin in the face of critique, ultimately recognizing that the true value of art lies in its capacity to bless and inspire others.Takeaways: Forrest emphasizes the importance of recognizing and cultivating one's artistic gifts for God's glory. The creative process involves trial and error, and artists should focus on delivering value to their audience rather than seeking personal praise. True artistic growth comes from accepting constructive criticism, which provides valuable insights for improvement and learning. Balancing character roles in storytelling, particularly in children's books, can highlight both feminine and masculine strengths effectively. Creating art is a discipline that requires consistent practice, much like sports or other skills, to achieve excellence. Artists should aim to make their work about blessing others rather than seeking validation for themselves. CONNECT WITH FORRESTBuy "Crispin's Rainy Day" on Canon PressTwitterInstagramWebsite
