How do you go from bankruptcy and bulimia to CEO and invited guest of the Dalai Lama?  Most of us would keep these hidden in a deep dark cavern. But not Nichol Ng, CEO of X-Inc Private Limited, the parent of a group of companies in the food business since the 1930s. At age 19, when the bank came to take away her family's home, Nichol promised that if she was able to save the family business, she would help as many families as she could.  Today the business is thriving with 200 employees, and Nichol has made good on her promise. She founded The Food Bank Singapore, which distributes food to over 300,000 underprivileged. Nichol was named to The Peak Magazine's The Peak Power List 2016, Forbes Asia's 2017 Heroes of Philanthropy, and Harper's Bazaar's The Power List 2018.  What about her two decade secret struggle with bulimia? Nichol shared it with as many people as she could - on TV and throughout Singapore. She wanted people to know how normal eating disorders are and that they can damage your body, including Nichol's struggle to get pregnant. Thankfully Nichol is now a mom to four kids.  How does Nichol make it all work? In Women of Color Rise, one of our tenets is to Be Yourself. Nichol is a great example of this. She shares that one of her secrets to success has been to Be Herself - at work, home, and life. This has allowed her to release the myth of being perfect, to be vulnerable and share her struggles, to ask for help, and to let go of the need to control others.  Get full show notes and more information here:https://analizawolf.com/ep-30-from-bankruptcy-bulimia-to-guest-of-the-dalai-lama-with-nichol-ng

Deeply entrenched stigmas and taboos are hard to overcome. But if there's anyone who can effect transformational change it would have to be Suhani Jalota, the social entrepreneur Dr. Dweck and Rachel welcome on this episode of The Busine$$ of the V. She has not only founded the visionary Myna Mahila Foundation to educate and debunk disempowering myths about menstruation prevalent in India, she's ultimately seeking to do nothing short of revolutionize the Indian economy to equalize the power of women within their households. It's an amazing agenda for anyone, but particularly for such a young woman. Suhani has secured a PhD in Health Policy and Economics as well as an MBA at Stanford while overseeing the mission of the Myna Mahila Foundation, which was founded in 2015 to provide a voice for adolescent girls and women in marginalized communities. She is building a team and network for young female entrepreneurs and leveraging technology to provide access to job opportunities throughout the world – work that has not gone unnoticed. She has been honored with the 2017 Queen's Young Leader Award and featured in the Forbes Asia 30 under 30, not to mention receiving an invite to Meghan Markle's royal wedding. (Yes, the experience was amazing!) You'll learn about the origins of her vision (as an undergrad), the cultural barriers her organization is breaking down and what is on the horizon for a young woman who clearly has barely begun the work she intends to do. It's exciting and heartening for Rachel, who shares an alma mater (Duke University) and longtime alliance with Suhani. “The gender attitude has to change,” says this social entrepreneur. And she's developing the tools, network and platforms to do exactly that! Subscribe to our newsletter and complete show notes for every episode at https://businessofthev.com

Daniel Flynn, co-founder of Thankyou, is one of Australia's most recognisable & successful social entrepreneurs. He is the recipient of EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Southern Region) and Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs.Thankyou was conceived while Daniel was still in college and he learned, to his horror, that there were 900 million people who didn't have access to clean water. 4500 kids were dying every day from water-borne disease and the women needed to trek 20km by foot to obtain clean water (they even risked being raped along that trecherous journey!).Determined to make a difference, Daniel, his girlfriend (now wife) Justine and friend, Jared Burns, got together as first-year university students to launch the consumer brand now known as Thankyou.Since 2008, Thankyou has raised over $17 million and impacted the lives of people across 22 countries. Thankyou's products can be found in major retailers across Australia & 100% of its profits go towards ending extreme global poverty.Thankyou has run many viral campaigns. To get 7-Eleven to stock Thankyou Water, they produced a youTube video that asked their followers to visit the 7-Eleven Australia Facebook page to promise to buy Thankyou water if it was stocked. Within two weeks, they had fans singing, dancing and rapping, and it was covered all over the media. 7-Eleven said yes & Thankyou became the third best selling brand (they were also top at certain points in time).A similar viral campaign happened when they tried to get Coles and Woolworths, which controlled over 70% of Australia's grocery market share, to stock Thankyou products. This time, they launched a video called the Coles and Woolworths campaign and also had two helicopters flown over Coles and Woolworths' respective headquarters in Melbourne and Sydney. Unsurprisingly, both said yes!And again in 2015, Daniel wrote a bestselling book, Chapter One, which generated over $1.4 million in sales & sold over 55,000 copies in its first month using an unorthodox ‘pay-what-you-want' model. However, these viral successes came after Daniel and his team experienced a great deal of setbacks. We explore all that and more in this episode. Highlights:4:00 Selling helicopters, yabbies & gobstoppers as a child5:15 Wanting to enter property development6:14 Learning about how 900 million people don't have access to clean water (the genesis of Thankyou)10:17 Whether Daniel knew what a “social enterprise” was in the early days11:21 Figuring out how to enter the water industry as 19-year-olds13:39 Getting his business coach to donate $20,00017:57 Experiencing huge setbacks21:39 Deciding to not pivot22:54 The idea behind the viral 7-Eleven campaign to stock Thankyou water24:54 Running the viral Coles & Woolworths campaign27:37 Building a core base of fans29:46 Managing the risks behind each campaign33:22 The “uncomfortable middle”34:46 Being almost crushed by the pressure42:19 Deciding to leave the water industry44:16 How Daniel & the Thankyou team celebrate their wins45:27 Any big idea Daniel has changed his mind on recently
