We were thrilled to talk with author Eowyn Ivey about her new book, BLACK WOODS BLUE SKY. During our conversation, Eowyn shared her writing habits, including a description of her writing cottage, and tells us about her reading life. Topics ranged from motherhood on the page and in real life, her family's literary life in Alaska, and Proust vs Joyce. In our own reading lives, we both read and discuss “The North Mail” by Amelia B. Edwards from THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: from Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. We gave this one four paws up. Or should it be eight paws? Whatever the rating system should be for cougars, we both enjoyed Edwards's story. It has a good creep factor and atmosphere, both indoors and outside. Other books we've enjoyed include novels HAPPY LAND by Dolan Perkins-Valdez and THE GRIFFIN SISTERS GREATEST HITS by Jennifer Weiner; a quartet of novellas, OLD NEW YORK by Edith Wharton; and two works of nonfiction: STORYWORTHY: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling by Matthew Dicks and DEEP WORK: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport. Big thanks to this episode's sponsor, James Crews and Brad Peacock. The new poetry collection they co-edited is available on May 6: LOVE IS FOR ALL OF US: Poems of Tenderness and Belonging from the LGBTQ+ Community and Friends (with illustrations by Lisa Congdon). We also recap a great Biblio Adventure to the Mark Twain House to hear Ethan Rutherford (author of NORTH SUN, OR THE VOYAGE OF THE WHALESHIP ESTHER) in conversation with Amity Gaige about her new novel, HEARTWOOD. Chris also got to attend THE MOUNT'S virtual book club discussion of Edith Wharton's A SON AT THE FRONT and Willa Cather's ONE OF OURS, led by Anne Schuyler and Julie Olin-Ammentorp. As always, there are more books inside this episode than we can fit here! Enjoy, and be sure not to miss our conversation with Eowyn Ivey at the end. Oh, and reminder: our second quarter readalong pick is THE GOOD HOUSE by Tananarive Due (Zoom discussion on 6/8 and also on Goodreads). Join me on a new series as I share my journey from buying books to renting them from the library, a transition I began in January 2022. I discuss the numerous benefits of this approach, such as saving money, reducing clutter, and the accountability of return deadlines. Over the past two years, I've read at least 24 books and started taking notes to enhance my learning. This journey has inspired me to solidify the content by teaching it, interviewing authors, and reviewing their books on the show. In this episode, I kick things off by exploring "Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling" by Matthew Dicks, highlighting the importance of storytelling in public speaking and encouraging listeners to check out The Moth and its podcast for inspiration. Next, we delve into the art of storytelling through the expertise of Matthew Dicks, a seasoned storyteller who has won the Moth Story Slam 36 times and the Grand Slam five times. We'll discuss the significance of storytelling in various contexts, from marketing to personal growth, and how everyone has story-worthy moments, even if they seem ordinary. Drawing insights from Dicks's book "Storyworthy," I'll share techniques such as keeping a story log and identifying the five-second story to help craft engaging narratives. Additionally, I'll introduce a new series where I review impactful books and invite their authors for interviews, encouraging listeners to send in their book recommendations. If you're an author interested in having your book reviewed or being interviewed, reach out via email or social media. I'm excited to embark on this enriching literary journey with you! In this week's episode, we highlight two stories from this year's Proton Prom, Story Collider's annual fundraiser and celebration of science storytelling. Part 1: Pamela Toh is dead set on being the “bad kid” at school. Part 2: On a family vacation to Disney, Matthew Dicks becomes more and more frustrated by his daughter's strange behavior. Pamela Toh is an aspiring writer and graduate student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where she conducts research on how the brain and body coordinate to elicit the symptoms of PTSD. Originally from Singapore, Pamela moved to NYC after completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (because the proximity to sun and surf was simply too much to bear). When not hunched over a lab bench, Pamela can be found coveting the latest LEGO sets, or in a yoga studio trying to correct her bad posture. Matthew Dicks is the internationally bestselling author of six novels and three nonfiction titles, including Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, Change Your Life Through the Art of Storytelling, and Stories Sell: Storyworthy Strategies to Grow Your Business and Brand. His novels have been translated into more than 25 languages worldwide. When not hunched over a computer screen, he fills his days as an elementary school teacher, storyteller, comedian, blogger, wedding DJ, minister, and communications consultant. He's been teaching for 25 years and is a former West Hartford Teacher of the Year and a Connecticut Teacher of the Year finalist. Matthew is a record 60-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 9-time GrandSLAM champion whose stories have been featured on their nationally syndicated Moth Radio Hour. Matthew is the founder of Speak Up, a Hartford-based storytelling organization that produces shows throughout New England. He teaches storytelling and public speaking worldwide to individuals, corporations, school districts, hospitals, universities, and more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
As a special THANK YOU to our Patreon community that keeps the showing going through these tough times, Andrea shares her “hot sauce” for making art. The core spice is this: Don't be afraid to be interesting. Sometimes there might be a temptation to self-censor, to play it safe, to adhere to external pressures real or imagined. Instead, go within and create based on what's true for you. That's what the world needs from you now. To use this guide, watch the video of the workshop, then read through the worksheet that outlines the step-by-step process: for Patreon subscribers you can find that worksheet linked here. Or you can listen to the guide as you would any podcast. Whatever works for you is what works! As a follow-up to this workshop, we'll gather in the new year for a live virtual event to talk through our projects, share ideas and insights, and support each other in our creative process. The goal is to protect our mental hygiene, enhance our intuition, and stay creative in a time of rampant gaslighting by idiotic destructive forces determined to demoralize us. We obviously won't let that happen. For any questions or to share notes on your own process, leave a comment below or write to Andrea at GaslitNation@gmail.com. To check out the first ever Gaslit Nation Make Art workshop, subscribe to the show at the Truth-teller level or higher on Patreon by signing up at Patreon.com/Gaslit. Today's show is centred on the expected cost of pessimism and how investor expectations of loss negatively affect financial decisions. After concisely exploring the data and literature on the subject, we get into a few solutions to this dynamic and talk about how to find a way around natural human tendencies and myopic loss aversion. We then get into our first Mark's Minutes segment, with our colleague Mark McGrath briefly explaining some interesting ideas about risk and tax-free savings accounts. For today's episode retrospective, we go over Episode 45 and the conversation we had with Moira Somers about effective communication and advice methods. Matthew Dicks, the author of Storyworthy then joins us to offer some insight into the utility of stories in the different areas of life, including financial advice, and more relaxed social settings. EPISODE 165 - Ariel Tsai - Author of Narcissus - Falling in love with yourself can be difficultAbout the AuthorAn avid reader and literary critic, Ariel Tsai always knew she needed to write a book. She obtained a bachelor's degree in English literature and criticism and Chinese language and literature, studying both in the United States and China. Her stylistic writing comes from a persistent itch to tell stories and understand the world around her. With sarcasm, wit, and keen observations (as an accomplished poet is wont to do), Tsai pours her ambition and heart into her writing. She harbors an undying love for symbolism, translation theory, and Honey Nut Cheerios, alongside a great deal of shame about her Anglophilic preferences in literature. John Milton and Philip Pullman are likely to blame.Falling in love with yourself can be difficult, with the exception being Narcissus, a figure in Greek mythology known to have fallen for his reflection. Contemptuous towards everyone but himself, the Greek youth realized he was his own true love. Whether he withered away in his longing or drowned in the pool of his reflection, Narcissus became the flower with delicate white and gold petals, staring at itself in the still waters. Like its namesake, Narcissus by Ariel Tsai reflects the human condition in all its most beautiful, mundane, and unpleasant forms.Narcissus captures human growth, for better or for worse, to reflect on what it means to love oneself— foolishly and wholeheartedly.https://www.buzzsprout.com/1927756/supporters/newA podcast is an excellent business card for your book, coaching program or business! E159 - Devorah Kur - Not Why Me But What Now, Finding Meaning in Our ChallengesIt all started in 1996 when my father was diagnosed with colon cancer. At the time I was running my own corporate interior design company, and loving the creativity. After his diagnosis, I became obsessed with the role of patients in their health, healing and illnesses. A new world opened up for me as I began exploring healing and what wellness meant. Was healing only up to doctors, or did we, as patients, have a role to play? Many fascinating books and teachers came into my life, who inspired me further, like Dr Bernie Siegel, who explores the role of the patient as an active participant in his own healing.Encouraging patients to take ownership of their healing, he says, “We are the soil in which the disease roots itself.” Deb Shapiro, Deepak Chopra, Caroline Myss and many more inspired me as I became more passionate about our ability to heal and to be healed.Amazon link to my book, 'Man's Search for Healing': https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJQ6WNG5Website - www.dkwellness.co.ilEmail - devorah@dkwellness.co.ilFacebook page - https://www.facebook.com/dkwellbeing/YouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5YDsijkbETm1T70Lc2B2AgLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/devorah-kur-b692a725/___https://livingthenextchapter.com/A podcast is an excellent business card for your book, coaching program or business! More moves followed: Kansas City, Kansas; Palatine, Illinois (a Chicago suburb); and Winston Salem, North Carolina.Bruce then decided to leave his nomadic corporate life and start his own business. The couple chose Charlotte, North Carolina, as their new forever home and have been a part of the community since 1979. His business, McIntyreSales, was a foodservice sales and marketing agency that grew to represent manufacturers like Nestle, Smuckers, Otis Spunkmeyer, and more.He has now written his first book: There Are No Answers Here, Only Questions. Like everything in life, the more we share, the more we learn, and the better our lives can be. So, let's have a discussion. If you have a group that would enjoy learning more about my memoir, we can arrange for me to speak on the importance of telling one's story or any part of the book.https://charlesbrucemcintyre.com/___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/A podcast is an excellent business card for your book, coaching program or business! Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.Dave's Affiliate Link - Support our show by clicking the link belowUS Audible LinkCanadian Audible LinkUK Audible LinkSupport the show!...

E156 - Keith Hayden - US Air Force veteran, teacher, author, podcaster and avid language learnerIn the world of business, “different” is sometimes prefable to “better.” My guest today, Keith Hayden, is a prime example of this. He is an author and is doing incredibly unique things online to promote his fiction book.Keith has come up with a fantastic way to break his 500-page novel down into bite-sized chunks for social media. He has created an audio drama version of Cereus & Limnic and is combining that with live streams where he goes deep on the book writing process. But how should he go about getting more eyeballs on his content? The inspiration for a lot of what Keith is doing is the sense of belonging he felt when he was in the military. He wants to recreate that for his audience, which is very smart. I had a blast talking to him, and this is an inspiring chat for all of us looking to build loyal, targeted audiences. Enjoy!https://keithhayden.net/https://livingthenextchapter.com/A podcast is an excellent business card for your book, coaching program or business!

E153 - Tracy Lea Carnes - Behind the Scenes of Sundance Film Festival with her new book The Darlings of SundanceOur Guest: TracyA fun fact about me was that she was a finalist in the Chris Moore Challenge during the first season of HBO's Project Greenlight with a 60 second comedy spoof that I wrote and produced. My political satire has also appeared nationally in The Huffington Post. My one-act play, UNDERSTANDING POLLY, won a 24-hour playwriting contest a few years ago. As for screenwriting, I studied under Lew Hunter at his colony. Spielberg calls Lew “the best screenwriting teacher going.”The Book: When struggling midlist author, Austen Landry, receives the chance of a lifetime to interview mega-star Radley Seager at the Sundance Film Festival, she jumps at the opportunity only to get caught up in the glamour, drama, danger, and secrets that Seager's entourage brings into Austen's orbit. This chance of a lifetime will change Austen's life forever.Austen's cinematographer best friend, a contemplative director, a rising starlet, an elusive stalker, a publisher and studio head power couple, and Austen's vanilla boyfriend from back home round out the cast of characters. Through the eyes of Austen we glimpse a unique and unbridled view into the glamorous inner workings of the Sundance Film Festival - the multi-million-dollar deals, the exclusive star-studded parties, the gifting suites, the hot-tubs, and, of course, the swag.Does Austen return home to New Orleans with something much more valuable than anything a gifting suite full of swag could ever give her?
