Kansas was at the height of their prowess and popularity as a prog rock-leaning band in 1978 when they released their first live album, Two for the Show.  Recorded during tours in 1977 and 1978, the double album gives the listener a glimpse into the energy of the band at the time.  The songs span the first five studio albums released by the group, from the eponymously named "Kansas" to the highly successful "Point of Know Return."Kansas would have a number of personnel changes over time, but this lineup would be the classic one.  Steve Walsh is on keyboards and vocals, Robby Steinhardt is on violins and vocals, Kerry Livgren is on guitars and keyboards, Rich Williams is on guitars, Dave Hope is on bass, and Phil Ehart is on percussion. In addition to the complex metered songs and excellent harmonies, Kansas also features Robby Steinhardt on violin in most of their songs.  The unusual use of violin in a rock band would create one of the signature sounds of Kansas.  Kansas would go on to have a number of hits in the 80's.  In 1982 front man Steve Walsh would leave the group and be replaced by John Elfante.  In 1983 both Livgren and Hope would leave the group to form the contemporary Christian band called AD.  Later Elfante would also leave the group to join the Contemporary Christian music genre, replaced by a returning Steve Walsh.Bruce presents this live prog rock masterpiece for this week's podcast.. Song for AmericaThis long-form masterpiece from the album of the same name was written by Kerry Livgren.  Its 3+ minute instrumental prelude did not make it onto the single release, but was a staple of FM rock stations at the time.  Livgren was inspired to write the song after viewing the country from a plane flight.Dust In the WindThe big hit from "Point of Know Return," went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Livgren originally wrote the music as a guitar exercise, and his wife encouraged him to develop it into a song.  The lyrics for this ballad come from the Bible, where the Preacher from Ecclesiastes says "everything he (man) has accomplished is futile - like chasing the wind." This live version concludes with an acoustic guitar outro performed by Rich Williams.Lonely WindThe live version of this song from their debut studio album begins with a piano solo from Kerry Livgren.  Steve Walsh penned this melancholy track about loneliness, with the wind personifying that feeling.  "Cry for me, sigh for me, sad breezes blow.  Stay for me, play for me, the song my friends will know.  My lonely wind must blow."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Grease by Frankie Valli (from the motion picture "Grease")John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John star in this blockbuster musical set in a 50's high school.  50's icon Frankie Valli performs the title song, written by Barry Gibb. STAFF PICKS:Strange Way by FirefallWayne goes more mellow than normal to start the staff picks.  This was the first track and big hit from the third album by Boulder, Colorado's Firefall.  It talks about a relationship based on relaying sorrow or self-pity, and not being able to move the current relationship forward.  Straight On by HeartRob brings us a well-known song from Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart.  This was the first single off their album "Dog & Butterfly," and became their third top 20 single, hitting number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics compare love to a game of chance, where you have to take some risks if you want to win.Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen"Get on your bikes and ride!"  Lynch features a hit written by Brian May with Freddie Mercury in mind, knowing that Mercury appreciated women of "substantial girth."  It was a part of a double A side release with "Bicycle Race," and the songs reference each other in the lyrics. How Much I Feel by AmbrosiaBruce's staff pick is a soft rock hit that went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Front man and co-founder David Pack wrote this song about a long-lost love that the singer will never truly get over.  Pack would go on to perform on the Kansas album "Vinyl Confessions" in 1982. NOVELTY TRACK:Y.M.C.A. by the Village People All skate, everyone skate for this fun throwback that tells a young man where he can go when he's short on the dough. That is, at least according to streaming service Yoto, which recently re-released Queen's “Greatest Hits” album with track five, the iconic “Fat Bottomed Girls”, glaringly omitted. This ode, what today would be considered a body positivity anthem, comes nowhere near the threshold of offensive or obscene. But it was yanked from the album because the streaming platform is aimed at younger audiences. Here to share his feelings of outrage is our lifestyle editor, Ron Burgundy. Hard rock and bluesy with plenty of sexiness and attitude, Brian brings us "Fat Bottomed Girls" which comes to life with Freddie's sharp vocal delivery in the verses. But it's Brian's voice that carries the chorus; and his syncopated hard guitar riff. And John rolls on his bass in the verses; wow. Roger stomps and bursts in with memorable fills on the drums. This song is fire, especially live. Some are quick to judge it, but at the end of the day, this song is all rock and fun. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tater-thoughts/message

Diese herausragenden Titel der Queen-Alben hat Peter Urban herausgesucht: Queen (1973): Liar Queen II (1974): The March oft he Black Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye Sheer Heart Attack (1974): Killer Queen, Now I'm here, Lily of the Valley, Lap of the Gods… A Night at the Opera (1975): Bohemian Rhapsody, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, Seaside Rendezvous, Love of my life A Day at the Races (1976): Somebody to Love, You Take My Breath Away News oft he World (1977): We Will Rock You, We are the Champions, My Melancholy Blues Jazz (1978): Mustapha, Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle Race, Don't stop me now The Game (1980): Play The Game, Another One Bites The Dust, Save Me, Crazy Little Thing Called Love Hot Space (1982): Under Pressure The Works (1984): Radio Gaga, It's a Hard Life, Hammer To Fall, Is This the World We created A Kind of Magic (1986): A Kind of Magic, Who Wants To Live Forever, Friends Will Be Friends The Miracle (1989): Breakthru, Was It All Worth It Innuendo (1991): Innuendo, These Are The Days of Our Lives, The Show Must Go On Made In Heaven (1995): Made in Heaven, Mother Love, You Don't Fool me

As we hopefully enjoy some long hot summer days Frank gives us the first of 2 episodes delving into the world of Brass Band crossover music. Bands have always played arrangements of ‘the music of the day’ which means for the last 30 years or so a great deal of ‘rock and pop’.  Not all bands are totally happy with the style which is when they rely on the skill of arrangers such as Barry Forgie, Philip Harper, Michael Antrobus and Alan Fernie to weave some musical magic around the tunes. So we have some Fat Bottomed Girls, we get Faith, we go All Night Long with Lionel Ritchie and Frank even features something by legends of the rock arena The Verve. And if you haven’t heard this particular arrangement of Lennon and McCartney’s Get Back well as they used to say stay tuned! It’s just about as far away from the Cavern as you can get… Next up in Episode 34 Frank venture into the much trickier territory of brass bands and jazz with some great crossover tracks and stunning arrangements of tunes that have become jazz standards the world over.

In this episode, I thank you for putting up with my podcasting learning curve. I'm used to singing into a microphone, but not talking into one. I observe the 22nd anniversary of the death of Freddie Mercury, one of my favorite musicians of all time. He was born Farrokh Bulsara, but chose the best stage name ever. Just like when JFK was assassinated, people remember where they were when they found out Freddie died. I was in Weatherford, Oklahoma, finishing up my degree with classes like bowling and tennis. I was dating a grunge girl. Freddie was one of the first celebrities to die of AIDS. I went over to my best friend, Phil's, apartment, and we listened to Queen and tried to come to terms with the bad news. Queen's Greatest Hits from about 1981 was the first Queen record I bought. It had "Bicycle Race" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" on it, and I was only ten or eleven years old, but I liked that. "Flash" was a huge hit, and I love it. I even try to sing it for you. "The Game" was the first rock record I ever bought, and it changed my life. I also bought "The Long Run" at the same time. My grandma bought them for me at KMart. I bet she thought I was going into a phase. The Eagles were good, but not as good as Queen. "The Game" was the first Queen album to use synthesizers. They always created their futuristic sound just with Brian May's guitar. "Play the Game" is an emotional hammer, followed by the funky "Dragon Attack". "Need You Loving Tonight", "Crazy Little Thing" etc. They all sang except Deacon. "Prime Jive" is sung by the drummer and it rocks! The album ends with some ballads that will knock you in the dirt. I implore you to seek out that album. The next album of theirs I got into was "The Works" with "Radio Gaga" on it. It had some other minor hits like "I Want To Break Free". "It's a Hard Life" sounds just like "Play the Game". There were lots of synths on that album, but not as many as on "Hot Space", which sounds like a sequenced album. I talk about "Life Is Real", which Freddie wrote for John Lennon. I got into "Innuendo" a lot, which was in 1991, the year Freddie died. It had a different sound. Freddie was very sick and almost couldn't sing sometimes. He had a strong will to perform, and it wasn't for money. He could play piano better than Elton John. There are some full length shows on YouTube you should watch. "The Show Must Go On" closed the album, and Freddie was really hurting when he recorded it. In 1988 I got Queen II. It's a very different album, talking about fairies and stuff, like Tolkien. "Ogre Battle" is as complex as Metallica. I bought an import CD that had a pound notes price sticker on it, which made me proud. "Sheer Heart Attack" is a rocker and has a great cover. You should check it out. It's got "Killer Queen" on it and "Now I'm Here", as well as the gay anthem of all time, "Misfire". John Deacon wrote it and played guitar. Freddie sings like an angel and there is much double entendre. Then they did a trio of albums named after Marx Brothers movies. The first two, "A Day at the Races" and "A Night at the Opera" are the finest example of layered rock music ever. I bought a gold plated CD of "Opera". Both of these albums have period pieces like vaudeville on them. British families after the war learned instruments and had family time together playing songs. They didn't watch TV. "Made In Heaven" is the final Queen album. The cover is beautiful and looking at it made me tear up. It features Freddie in front of Lake Geneva. Freddie was dying during the recording, but the song's messages are hopeful. That was Freddie, and I miss him. I speculate whether Freddie's buck teeth contributed to who he became as a performer. Samson had his hair, and Barbara has her nose, and Freddie had his teeth. I saw a picture of him as a child and his teeth were huge. That humbled him. Now kids have too much unearned self-esteem. I used to feel like I was showing off just by wearing sunglasses. Freddie faced down what stared him in the mirror and overcame it as the biggest star on Earth. Next, I observe the 45th anniversary of the Kinks "We Are the Village Green Preservation Society" album, which is a masterpiece. They are the quintessential British band. The album has lots of character studies and role playing inspired by the Beatles. The Village Green is a working class place in the post war era mentioned on multiple albums. The post war era was very influential to British bands like the Stones, the Who, and others. They were very worldly at a young age. All the Kinks albums of the period were loose concept albums. Ray Davies was lamenting the passing of old British traditions on these albums. He was part of the cultural change, but at the same time he was melancholy about it. The album came out in 1968 and was recorded at Pye Studios. Ray produced it. You wouldn't know the songs unless you like the Kinks, but all the songs are good. My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com. Brian May spent his childhood in Feltham near London and he learnt his first chords on his father's ukelele banjo. He soon progressed to the guitar, which he started learning when he was eight. He perfected his technique by buying records and copying the trickiest guitar parts. Although Brian's dream was to be a guitarist, it didn't seem like a reality so, encouraged by his parents, he went to London University's Imperial College to study physics. Whilst there he continued playing in bands with his drummer friend Roger Taylor. They were soon joined by art student Freddie Bulsara (who became Freddie Mercury) and John Deacon and formed Queen. Brian was researching infra red astronomy and part-time tutoring, but Queen soon hit the big time with their 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack, a success on both sides of the Atlantic. The band recorded 20 albums over a 22 year period and had frequent hits around the world with Killer Queen, Radio Ga Ga and Bohemian Rhapsody. Brian wrote huge Queen hits such as We will Rock You, Fat Bottomed Girls and Flash. They were known for their flamboyant live shows, where Brian provided technical brilliance and extended guitar solos inspired by Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. When lead singer Freddie Mercury died of an AIDS-related illness in 1991, Brian and his fellow band members organised a huge tribute concert for AIDS research which was shown on television screens around the world. Thirty-one years after Queen began, the band is still popular: Bohemian Rhapsody was voted most popular British song in a BBC Radio 2 poll this year, 24 years after its first release. Brian has also written and toured with his own band and in June this year he kicked off the Queen's Jubilee concert with an amazing guitar solo of The National Anthem from the roof of Buckingham Palace. This month he came fifth in a poll to find the World's Greatest Guitarists.
