In this episode of "Keen On", Andrew is joined by Vanessa O'Brien, author of "To the Greatest Heights: Facing Danger, Finding Humility, and Climbing a Mountain of Truth", to discuss her journey from suburban Detroit to Everest’s Death Zone to the summit of K2 and beyond. Vanessa O’Brien is an American mountaineer and a British mountaineer (as a result of her dual nationality), explorer, public speaker and former business executive. Vanessa was named Explorer of the Year in 2018 by the Scientific Exploration Society. She is one of only eight women to achieve the Explorers Grand Slam, having summited the highest peak on every continent and skied the last degree to the North and South Poles in eleven months. Vanessa was the first woman to set a speed record to climb the Seven Summits, entering the Guinness Book of World Records for climbing the Seven Summits in 295 days. Curiosity, determination and a passion for excellence led her to become the first American woman and the first British woman to successfully summit K2 in 2017. Vanessa is a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and a Member of the Scientific and Exploration Society. She is an advocate for woman’s causes, carrying the UN Women’s flag to the summit of K2. On The Mountain Life , Pete and Lynn welcome Vanessa O’Brien. O'Brien is the first American woman to summit K2 and the author of the new book, To the Greatest Heights: Facing Danger, Finding Humility, and Climbing a Mountain of Truth. Armed with a MBA and a wry sense of humor, O’Brien climbed the corporate ladder to great success, but after the 2009 economic meltdown, her career went into a tailspin. She searched for a new purpose and settled on an unlikely goal: climbing the tallest peaks in the world.
Vanessa O’Brien is the first American woman to reach Earth’s highest and lowest points. A first responder survived a brutal hike in the White Mountains, only to watch in horror as another hiker died on the same mountain a week later.

Bernadine Evaristo’s bestseller Girl, Woman, Other is on plenty of reading lists after winning the 2019 Booker Prize, but what books are getting her through lockdown? One of them is Darling by Rachel Edwards - who joins Jenni to tell her all about her debut novel. Research shows that in lockdown, in heterosexual couples, women still do the majority of the childcare and chores. However, there has been a modest increase in the time men spend on these tasks overall. So could this be an opportunity to improve equality in the home? In April we ask you to get involved with research into how lockdown is affecting the well-being of families. The team at Sussex University now have their first set of preliminary results. PhD researcher Ali Lacey discusses their findings along with Mary-Ann Stephenson, Director of the UK Women’s Budget Group and Francine Deutsch, Emeritus Professor of Psychology and Education at Mount Holyoke College in the US, and editor of Creating Equality at Home – How 25 Couples Around the World Share Housework and Childcare. You may have read in the papers this week that there are worries about the way the police are extracting and using information taken from mobile phones. Of particular concern was the use of such information where rape is alleged and there appears to be evidence that where a victim refuses to hand over a mobile, investigations are being brought to a halt. A report by the Information Commissioner’s Office argues that current mobile phone extraction practices and rules risk negatively affecting public confidence in the criminal justice system we hear from the Victims Commissioner for England and Wales, Dame Vera Baird QC. Plus explorer Vanessa O’Brien, the first woman in the world to reach Earth’s highest and lowest points, on why she wants o inspire other women to take on challenges.
Før hun begynte med klatring var hun Director of Finance and Business Development for selskaper som Morgan Stanley, Barclays Bank og Bank of America.
Will lessons learned behind the desk transfer to physical challenges? This week’s guest says yes! When you stop climbing corporate ladders, what do you climb next? For Vanessa O’Brien the answer is almost everything! The more difficult the better. She applied what she learned in the challenging environment of the Fortune 500 to the natural environment in a dramatic way. The extreme conditions taught her valuable lessons about happiness and success. Growing up, she was thrust into a challenging situation as well. Learn how O’Brien has combined all these life lessons into a satisfying and productive life. Lessons: 1. Three S’s of success: speed, simplicity and self confidence apply as well on the mountain as behind the desk. 2. Try something new, make a change, you can always go back. 3. The Explorers’ Grand Slam is the ultimate adventure challenge that involves climbing the world’s highest peaks on each of the seven continents as well as trekking to the geographic North and South poles. Masha began her Explorers' Grand Slam challenge in October 2015 she has now scaled the world’s highest peaks on each of the seven continents – Everest (Asia), Kilimanjaro (Africa), Vinson Massif (Antarctica), Aconcagua (South America), Carstensz Pyramid (Australasia), Mt. Elbrus (Europe) and Denali (North America) as well as trekked to the geographic North and South poles. The extraordinary demands of the challenge mean she's been pushed to the edge of her physical endurance and mental resilience. She's spent over a 100 days in a tent and spent three weeks trekking on skis to the North and South Poles in -40C weather and exposed herself to the “death zone” – the high altitude above 8,000 where there is not enough oxygen for humans to breathe. Only two other people have completed the Explorers' Grand Slam challenge (including the two poles) in under a year and just 45 in total. The previous female world record title holder was Vanessa O’Brien who completed the record in 11 months. Masha did it in 8 months! Show notes Early years and growing up and not being athletic! Falling in love with the mountains and getting that sense of achievement from adventure What the Explorers’ Grand Slam is and how it came about Negotiating time with the family to make time for the challenge Remembering back to taking the first step of the challenge The importance of having a sounding board What aspect of the challenge worried her the most and why Getting fit and building up her endurance Starting the Explorers Grand Slam with climbing Kilimanjaro in 24 hours Everest and attempting the summit Dealing with fragility and how it became a story about grit Teaming up with Lydia Bradey and deciding to climb or not with the potential for 50 mph winds on the way What they had to do, to remain safe on the mountain. Knowing your limits and why you need to put things into perspective Getting off Everest and why that can be the riskiest part Grit & Rock the charity, how it came about and why its so important for young women What Masha learned most about herself throughout this experience. What her children thought about her adventure and how its changed her children Check out the Grit & Rock Website for more info! A massive thank you to everyone who has become a patron!
