Solo in the Death Zone: Brian Dickinson's Blind Descent from Everest This week's Team Never Quit guest is no stranger to adversity. Brian Dickinson, a former U.S. Navy Special Operations Aviation Rescue Swimmer and elite mountaineer, joins us to share the harrowing true story of his solo summit and descent of Mount Everest after being left without a guide—and without sight. After his Sherpa fell ill near the South Col, Brian pushed onward alone to the top of the world, only to be struck by sudden snow blindness on the way down. What followed was a seven-hour descent with no vision, no oxygen, and no margin for error. Brian holds the record for the highest solo blind descent and has completed the Seven Summits, conquering the tallest peaks on each continent. Before his mountaineering feats, Brian served six years in the U.S. Navy with the elite NSO (Naval Special Operations) community, deploying on high-risk rescue and combat missions in the Persian Gulf. Now the host of Calm in the Chaos, a podcast that highlights raw, untold rescue stories from America's unsung heroes, Brian brings the same courage, insight, and humility to this conversation. Whether you're a fan of extreme adventure, military resilience, or human endurance—you won't want to miss this one. In This Episode You Will Hear: • {Marcus] I'm a Charlie Sheen SEAL. (8:19) • It's weird when you go from jumping put of helicopters to something less interesting. (14:11) • You can't really plan for giving up in the death zone – 26,00 feet. But you can train for the things in your control. (18:07) • You can't acclimate to 26 [thousand feet]. You're slowly dying. Like if you cut your finger, it won't heal. There's not enough air. (23:23) • At Camp 3, this is where you see a straight up ice wall. If you fall, you're falling for a mile. (24:32) • When I got about a thousand feet above Camp 3, I had to anchor off to get some water. I had an oxygen mask and goggles, and I took my goggles off to put them around my wrist, and as I was getting my mask off to drink water, my foot slipped, I went to grab the rope, and my goggles slid off and 4they're just like… down. And you don't bring extra gear. (25:35) • There're over 300 bodies still on the mountain. (30:38) • You live and die by the decisions you make in life. (31:34) • When you climb any mountain at night, the sun is your first indication of hope. (37:33) • According to the Himalayan Database, I'm one of two people to ever have the summit to myself on a given day. (39:07) • Everything just went completely white. I went Snowblind. And I remember at that moment, dropping down, grabbing the rope, and assessing the situation thinking: I'm at the highest point in the world, I'm completely blind; no one's coming to get me. (41:07) • I just witnessed a miracle. It was like someone reached down and picked me up. An unexplained energy. The first thing I did was try the extra oxygen bottle and it started working, and I got 5 full beaths – reeling it in – and it burned. It felt like fire going through my veins. (48:02) • Everyone loves a survival story. They could care less about the survivor. (53:43) • That whole time, Jesus was walking alongside me. I felt that presence. In this episode of the Real ResQ, we are joined by Brian Dickinson, USN RS, mountaineer and author of the book, The Blind Descent. After six years and two deployments in the Navy, Brian decided to move on to the next chapter of his life. He talks about how the training at the US Navy Rescue Swimmer school set him up for success when it came to tackling the tallest mountain on every continent. With the support of his wife and children, Brian set out to climb mountains that other people only care to read about in books. He walks us through some of his adventurous hikes and then, we talk about the big one, Mt. Everest. On the very top of Mt. Everest, Brian became snow-blind. On top of losing his vision, Brian was alone on his quest and had to figure out how to get safely off of the mountain. Nothing short of a miracle, it took him seven hours of a ‘Blind Descent' to get to safety and thankfully, he lived to tell the tale. This week, Colin sat down with motivational speaker and mountain guide, Brian Dickinson. As a former Navy rescue swimmer, Brian had been put into some serious situations with lives on the line. But what about his own life? Brian's background starts in soccer, with an eventual knee injury ending his career and guiding him to the US Navy. While Brian was stationed in San Diego, he met his wife, and after years together, they got married and made their way up to the PNW. While in school, they started indulging in the various outdoor activities that the PNW offers, which includes hiking and climbing. After climbing Mt. Rainer, Brian then decides to make it his mission to climb all the highest peaks in the seven continents. And with that, came Mt.Everest. Brian was roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mt. Everest - also known as the death zone - when his Sherpa became ill and had to turn back, leaving Brian with a difficult decision: should he continue to push for the summit, or head back down the mountain.... Former Navy rescue swimmer and veteran climber Brian Dickinson was roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mount Everest – also known as the ‘death zone' – when his guide became ill and had to turn back. Brian kept going and summitted solo, a rare feat – but, then went snow blind. He's about to die. Alone and blind on the top of Everest is one of the most compelling stories in history … and one of the most amazing testimonies to ever be on Brave Men. What happened next was a miracle. Brian says it was the hand of God that sustained him. Low on oxygen, blind, fatigued - relying on his Navy survival training, gut instinct and the presence of the Lord Brian began the deadly descent off Everest – with no one there to help. The book recounting his extraordinary adventure is a global best seller, “Blind Descent”. Considered one of the most dangerous feats ever accomplished in the annals of mountaineering this is a conversation you must share with others. You will be inspired, invigorated and filled with the courage to go after the ‘Everest' in your life. This powerful conversation between Paul Cole, the President of Christian Men's Network, and Brian Dickinson demonstrates that no matter how imposing our circumstances or obstacles – there is no challenge too big for God.

PiCREP was joined by Brian Dickinson with co-host Benjamin Breckhemier. About Brian: Former Navy rescue swimmer Brian Dickinson was roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mount Everest—also known as “the death zone”—when his Sherpa became ill and had to turn back, leaving Brian with a difficult decision: should he continue to push for the summit, or head back down the mountain? After carefully weighing the options, Brian decided to continue toward the summit—alone. Four hours later, Brian solo summited the highest peak in the world. But the celebration was short-lived.......Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)

Happy anniversary! I started systematically recording (written/audio) my weekly learnings 100 weeks ago. I started AMXweekly on March 27, 2017. It was then called the Excellence Blueprint. From there, it evolved into the BOLD Blueprint. From the BB, it became What I Learned this Week and finally turned into yours truly, AMXweekly. 100 weeks of systematic learning. That's 100 weeks of books, interviews, solosodes, Dreadisodes, life experiences and more. How cool will it be when we get to AMXweekly 1000?!? I hope you enjoy this weeks centennial celebration! In this one conversation, you'll hear about freeing yourself from parachute lines underwater, evading high voltage wires, water stinging your face like gravel, struggling with a person you're trying to rescue, surviving a temperature of 70 below … and oh yeah, being struck with 24-hour snow blindness on top of Mount Everest and having to get down alone. Brian Dickinson has faced all of that and more and lived to tell the Spaniard about it. Brian Dickinson has always been an adventurer, and was Air Rescue Swimmer in the Navy, and is now a very accomplished mountaineer. He’s written a book about his climb of Everest called “Blind Descent: Surviving Alone and Blind on Mount Everest.” Today he tells Mark about how he got into mountaineering after the Navy, and his harrowing adventures climbing Everest. Hear how: He lost his Sherpa to illness with about 1000 feet left to go to the summit The day after summiting, he lost his ability to see, and had to make his way down without eyesight. An oxygen tank that had malfunctioned earlier miraculously started working just in time for him to be able to breath Understand how faith and determination allowed Brian to overcome one of the most difficult situations imaginable.

As a survival expert and former US Navy Air Rescue Swimmer, Brian Dickinson, delivers one of the most powerful experiences you will ever hear. His story exemplifies what it takes to face adversity and overcome impossible obstacles, leaving audiences inspired to conquer their greatest fears. In 2011, Brian soloed the summit of Mount Everest, but then went completely snow blind on the descent. Hand over hand he made his way down blind and alone. What should have taken 3 hours to reach high camp, ended up taking him 7 hours. Brian took a major fall down the south summit and eventually ran out of supplemental oxygen, but through determined faith and focus he survived the impossible!
Mount Everest Climber & Author of "Blind Descent" - Brian Dickinson
Brian Dickinson spent 6 years in the United States Navy as a Special Operations Air Rescue Swimmer. He did 2 tours in the Gulf as a part of Operation Southern Watch. His military duties were Combat Search and Rescue, Anti-Submarine Warfare Operator, Crew Chief, Aerial Gunner, Search and Surveillance, Vertical Replenishment and Special Warfare support. Dickinson soloed the summit of Mount Everest on May 15, 2011, after his Sherpa mountain guide became ill and went back down to high camp. After taking some pictures and making a radio call, Brian began his descent but within a few feet he became snow blind. His vision did not fully return for over a month. His descent to high camp from the summit took over seven hours, instead of the expected two to three hours. Brian ran out of oxygen on his descent but made it down to the South Col where his guide met him to help him back to his tent. Brian holds the record for the highest solo blind descent. He has climbed the Seven Summits by climbing the highest peaks of all seven continents. He also participates in many other extreme sports. Brian's Blind Descent experience has been reenacted in television segments including the Christian Broadcast Network's 700 Club, the Weather Channel's Freaks of Nature, KING-TV and Brian was featured on CNN's Anderson Cooper, ABC's Good Morning America, CNN's New Day with Chris Cuomo, Huffington Post, Fox Business Varney & Co, Success Magazine, Redemption Movie Series, Weather Channel, American Survival Guide Magazine, Simple Grace Magazine, Charisma Magazine, Guideposts and more. Brian's Mount Everest experience also landed him as the top trending moment for Twitter. This episode is sponsored by Liberty Tax, InStitchu, and Elitra Health. Learn more about your ad choices. Snowboard ned Bengali Boken Blind Descent Lage minner for livet! Med mer!
Brian has always had an itch for adventure. He served in the U.S. Navy as an Air Rescue Swimmer, he has summited 6 of the 7 major peaks in the world including Mount Everest, which, after a solo ascent, he was forced to descend blind due to faulty goggles causing snow blindness. Brian wrote the book “Blind Descent” based off of the events and lessons learned from his time at Everest and is currently training to summit the last of the seven peaks Favorite Success Quote “Get busy living or get busy dying” – Shawshank Redemption Key Points 1. Live as a Doer, Not a Sayer Life is full of sayers. People who say they will lose weight, say they will start saving more than they spend or say they will start that business they have been talking about for years. But they never follow through. They are relegated to lives of menial existences, filled with mediocre intentions and non existent actions. As men who want to be more than average, as men who want to create a life worth living, we must become doers. Don't say you're going to start a business, do it. Don't say you're going to start working out, do it. Let your actions speak so loud that you don't need to say a thing. 2. Evaluate Every Situation As men (especially younger men) we are often prone to haste, because quite frankly, waiting sucks. As guys, if we're going to do something, we don't want to wait, we don't want to weigh different courses of action and examine the possible consequences. And this is when we get into trouble. This is how businesses fail, how sexual mistakes are made, and how dreams are broken. We must learn to pause before taking action and evaluate. Ask ourselves what the consequences of our actions will be and determine the best possible way to proceed. 3. Don't Over-think Things Often just as easy as not thinking at all is over-thinking situations to the point of insanity. If we go out and get a cute girl's number, we will sit for hours trying to think of the perfect line to text her, stewing over every single word instead of sending a simple “hey.” We often obsess over minutiae instead of focusing on the big picture. As Einstein once said “Make things simpler, but not simpler than they need to be.” Don't over-analyze, pause, take stock and execute. 4. Take Life One Step at a Time As men who are driven and ambitious, it is easy to live in the future, focusing on steps that are light years away. We think about the color of the flowers we will have at our wedding, before we even say hello to the girl. We think about how we will invest our income from our next venture, before we even know what that venture will be. We think about pretty much anything, except the thing right in front of us. Like Brian did while descending Everest blind, we need to slow down and take things one step at a time. Face each challenge as it presents itself and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.

I don't know if I've ever met someone who lives more in the moment than Brian Dickinson, and he shares his incredible story in today's interview. He is an ex-Navy rescue swimmer, a world-class mountain climber and the author of Blind Descent, the inspiring story about how he summited Mount Everest – alone – and overcame descending the mountain blind. Brian is still learning the ability to slow down and live in the moment, gathering the courage to be content. Brian's climbs help him gain perspective on the world off of the mountain, because he experiences how slowly time can feel. It can be dangerous to start climbing alone. “Not even climbing, but everything. If you can latch onto somebody who has a clue, has made the mistakes, you're going to learn a ton.” There's so much in your control, if you know how to control it. Control, on the mountain and in your business, comes down to preparation. “The success is creating a lifestyle of change,” and then you will always be prepared for that next climb or business endeavor. I've described preparation as the bridge between expectation and reality. Sometimes, that bridge can collapse, and things will go south in spite of your preparation – like when you start to develop snow blindness at the highest point on Earth. In these situations, success can come down to willpower. Sometimes willpower means moving forward, using your training, without overthinking the situation. Motivation can pull us through the impossible, in our lives and in our businesses. Brian used his family to help him descend Mount Everest and overcome his instinct to panic. Use your motivation to focus on breaking a bad experience down to small successes, keeping a map in your mind of where you are going. For now, Brian is taking what he learned and focusing on having the courage to be content. There's no shortage of adventures in this world, and he's going to go on the next few with his family. We are put in situations for a reason. Usually it's not at the top of Mount Everest, but it's always so that we can share something of value with other people, and maybe save someone's life, career or marriage through our stories. SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: How did Brian learn the ability to slow down and live in the moment? How did Brian's military training aid him in transitioning towards entrepreneurship and the tech industry? How important has mentorship been to Brian in his climbing endeavors? What are Brian's thoughts on preparation and willpower? When Brian was descending Mount Everest and started going blind, how did he not give in to the harsh conditions? How did Brian overcome panic in an unpredictable situation? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: An incredible story about human strength and willpower How preparation is a lifestyle as much as an activity Why it is courageous to be content How to use motivation to overcome the worst situations Plus much more… DON'T STOP HERE… Learn more about Brian: Website | Twitter | YouTube | https://www.facebook.com/briancdickinson (Facebook) | Instagram ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Blind Descent: Surviving Alone and Blind on Mount Everest by Brian Dickinson

If we want trust to exist within ourselves and with those closest to us, we must be willing to put ourselves out there. In taking this act of faith we are bringing ourselves one step closer to living full out.

Today’s first caller Pamela is searching to find the best way to communicate to her daughters why she is divorcing their father. Hear how Nancy advises Pamela to relate her divorce to a disagreement her daughters may have experienced with friends and that their dad will always be their “daddy.”Our second caller Hayden is a recent college graduate who is taking a leap forward and moving out of state for his career but is worried about the transition and creating new, lasting relationships. Listen in as Nancy reminds Hayden that he has made new friendships throughout his life and to not “psych himself out” of this new journey.Today’s inspirational guest is Brian Dickinson, who soloed a Mount Everest summit but was faced with a blinding challenge during his descent. Tune in to Brian as he tells his story of climbing Mt. Everest and how he didn’t let fear hold him back from finishing his goal. To learn more about Brian’s story, you can read his book "Blind Descent."The last caller Joe’s wife has early-onset Alzheimer’s and is having a difficult time dealing with the stress that is developed because of the disease. Find out how Joe is reminded that this is his journey with his wife and that he should be honest when he is experiencing a bad day dealing with her condition. The role of trust in all of our engagements cannot be under-estimated or undervalued. Without a purposeful and consistent effort to build trust and strong connections, even the seemingly best relationships will have the potential to either fail or fall short. If we want trust to exist within ourselves and with those closest to us, we must be willing to put ourselves out there. In taking this act of faith we are bringing ourselves one step closer to living full out.

Get ready for an inspiring story of faith and determination! Coach Cafe welcomes Brian Dickinson, author of Blind Descent: Surving Alone and Blind on Mount Everest. Roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mount Everest – also known as “the death zone”--Brian's Sherpa guide was forced to turn back after falling ill. Brian had to decide whether to push forward alone to the summit of Mt. Everest or turn back. After carefully weighing his options, Dickinson decided to continue up alone. Just four hours later, Dickinson solo summited the highest peak in the world. As Brian prepared to descend back down the mountain's 29,035 feet, his vision suddenly became blurry, his eyes started to burn, and within seconds he was rendered almost completely blind. Alone at the top of the world, low on oxygen, and stricken with snow blindness Brian was forced to inch his way back down the mountain relying only on his Navy survival training, his gut instinct, and most importantly, his faith. Tune in to hear Brian's gripping story and how it has impacted his life, faith and what he has to share about empowerment and overcoming challenging situations in life.
