Are you having fun? Do you make time and space for the activities and experiences that delight you? Do you engage in unadulterated play just for the joy of it? It seems that many of us unintentionally traded in fun for work. We didn't mean to do this necessarily, but somehow we started acting as though fun was reserved for youth and adulthood meant an endless loop of tasks and responsibilities. This has created a massive imbalance in our lives and has resulted in a dimming of our magic. As we greet this soggy spring day, let's consider all the barriers we face to fun and the creative ways we might overcome them. It's time to let the fun back in! This week, I'm joined by the remarkable Erling Kagge, Norwegian adventurer, philosopher and acclaimed writer. Erling is the first person to complete the "Three Poles Challenge" - reaching the North Pole, the South Pole, and the summit of Mount Everest on foot. After this record-breaking feat, Erling attended Cambridge University to study philosophy. He's also the author of multiple best-selling books, including, Silence: In the Age of Noise and Walking: One Step at a Time. When Erling was 29, he did something most of us can't imagine - he walked alone to the South Pole for 50 days in complete silence, with no radio contact whatsoever. What started as a physical journey across ice became something far more profound - a journey into himself. In our conversation, we explore Why Erling believes silence is where "the world's secrets are hidden" and how finding quiet moments can help us get to know ourselves better - and appreciate others more Erling's surprising relationship with fear and how being "one with the environment" creates an unexpected sense of peace even in extreme danger - like facing a charging polar bear! The three simple origins of true gratefulness that Erling found during his expeditions: feeling warm after being cold, feeling full after being hungry and resting after exhaustion – experiences most of us rarely have in our comfortable modern lives How our experience of boredom has completely changed – from being bored because nothing is happening to feeling bored because too many things are happening at once Why Erling believes we should actually "make our lives more difficult" on purpose and how this approach helps us find meaning and satisfaction Practical ideas for bringing moments of silence into our busy lives – whether it's walking without your phone, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or just standing still for a few minutes As Erling reminds us, most of us don't realise what we're truly capable of. His encouragement to break free from limiting beliefs, to move our bodies more, and to add variety to our routines offers a practical path toward a more meaningful life. In his words, finding fulfilment is about "finding your own North Pole" – a journey that asks us to be brave enough to face ourselves in silence. I hope you enjoy listening. The North Pole has inspired countless legends, but few have ever set foot on its shifting, icy terrain. In this segment, explorer Erling Kagge recounts his grueling 500-mile trek across the frozen Arctic Ocean, facing relentless cold, polar bears, and the eerie isolation of endless daylight. Reflecting on survival, adventure, and climate change, Kagge offers a rare glimpse into one of Earth's last great frontiers. The North Pole looms large in our collective psyche—the ultimate Otherland in a world mapped and traversed. It is the center of our planet’s rotation, and its sub-zero temperatures and strange year of one sunset and one sunrise make it an eerie, utterly disorienting place that challenges human endurance and understanding. Erling Kagge and his friend Børge Ousland became the first people “to ever reach the pole without dogs, without depots and without motorized aids,” skiing for 58 days from a drop off point on the ice edge of Canada’s northernmost island. Erling, today’s guest, describes his record-making journey, probing the physical challenges and psychological motivations for embarking on such an epic expedition, the history of the territory’s exploration, its place in legend and art, and the thrilling adventures he experienced during the trek. Erling also observes the key role that this place holds in our current geopolitical conversations. He is the author of the book After the North.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Explorer, writer, and publisher Erling Kagge came from a childhood enriched by an artistic household (the likes of Chet Baker and Eubie Blake once visited his home) and by ready access to nature. He was the first person to complete the Three Poles Challenge -- reaching the South Pole, the North Pole, and the top of Mt. Everest -- on foot. He talks about what a life of extreme exploration has taught him about silence and the value of failure.

Programleder: Eivind Eidslott Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We're pulling one of my top picks from the archive for a second episode this week! What an incredible show today as I sit down (in person) and chat with legendary explorer and adventurer Erling Kagge. Erling is a man of many firsts. In 1990, Erling was the first to reach the North Pole without support as part of a two-person team, and in 1992-93, he was the first to do a solo unsupported expedition to the South Pole. He spent 50 days walking alone across Antarctica without any contact with anyone. He also climbed Mt. Everest in 1994, which made him the first to complete the 3 Poles Challenge on foot. Then, in 2010, he completed a 5-day walk through the sewers of NY to the Atlantic Ocean, and in 2012, he walked the entire length of LA's Sunset Boulevard! We talk about his book Silence: In the Age of Noise, why silence is such an essential part of our lives as humans, walking, travel (of course!), and much more. Instead of taking a break from weekly releases, we thought we'd share some of his favourite episodes from early on in the life of the podcast.Episode 152 of The Adventure Podcast is From The Archives, and revisits Matt's conversation with Erling Kagge back in October 2019. Erling is an explorer, publisher and philosopher, who's feet have taken him from the ends of the Earth, to the sewers of Manhattan and across the world's oceans. His views on walking, silence and the philosophy of travel are still so relevant today, and will hopefully inspire you to lace up your boots and get out there.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Queste sono le grandi domande che ci siamo posti questa sera e a cui abbiamo tentato di dare una risposta con una nostra opinione. Giusta? Sbagliata? Erling Kagge, one of the greatest living polar explorers – and the first in history to reach the 'three poles' – is the guest that we hear from in this week's mini episode, taken from our longer conversation released in February 2022. Speaking to me from his home in Norway, Erling shares touchingly in this clip how the time he spent living in London in early adulthood was more lonely than the period he spent 50 days and 50 nights alone traversing the South Pole. Our conversation is a reflection on what it truly means to experience alonement; to be lonely; and everything in between.Twitter:*@ChezSpecter*Instagram:*@ChezSpecter*Contact: press@alonement.com Hosted on Acast. In it we cover: (00:00:00) – Introduction (00:01:57) – How Erling's daughters inspired his book about silence (00:07:36) – Erling's experience walking solo to the South Pole (00:13:34) – Erling's expeditions across the Atlantic and to the North and South Poles (00:21:15) – Erling's struggle with dyslexia, and how reading became an important part of his life (00:24:23) – How Erling dove into philosophy (00:29:51) – On how Erling got into book publishing, the publishing process at Kagge Forlag (00:47:55) – Why moving slowly is better than speeding through life, and how walking plays into that (01:01:01) – Erling's daily rituals ABOUT ERLING KAGGE Erling Kagge is a man of many firsts. The New York Times has described Erling as a philosophical adventurer, or perhaps an adventurous philosopher. In 1990, Erling and his expedition partner Børge Ousland became the first people to ever reach the North Pole unsupported. Over the course of 58 days, they covered nearly 500 miles on skis, pulling hundreds of pounds of supplies behind them the entire way. In 1993, Erling became the first person to make a solo, completely unsupported expedition to the South Pole, where he covered over 800 miles in 50 days without any contact with the outside world. And in 1994, Erling summited Mount Everest, completing what's called the “Three Pole Challenge” by making it to both the North and South Poles, as well as the summit of Mount Everest. Out of those experiences, he's published multiple best selling books, including two of my all time favorites, Silence: In the Age of Noise, and Philosophy for Polar Explorers: What They Don't Teach You in School.
Explorer, writer, and publisher Erling Kagge was the first person to complete the Three Poles Challenge — reaching the South Pole, the North Pole, and the top of Mt. Everest — on foot. He talks about what a life of extreme exploration has taught him about silence and the value of failure.
Who decides the value of a piece of art? And how do they come to their conclusions? In May, Andy Warhol's 'Shot Sage Blue Marilyn' sold at Christie's for a record £158 million, making it the most expensive painting of the 20th century – but it is merely the biggest wave in an international tsunami of art sales. Jelena Sofronijevic speaks to Mary-Alice Stack, Chief Executive at Creative United, and Erling Kagge, polar explorer, former politician, and author of A Poor Collector's Guide to Buying Great Art, to discuss placing a value on creativity. “The price is reflective of the market, not the value of the artwork.” – Mary-Alice Stack “Now, we don't talk about art, we talk about the art market,” – Erling Kagge “Art fairs are the least best place to buy an artwork.” – Mary-Alice Stack “There was a time when galleries felt like the preserve of the moneyed classes.” – Mary-Alice Stack “There's a sense that if you need to ask the price, you can't afford it.” - Mary-Alice Stack “Fantastic art is being made every day.” – Erling Kagge “The auction houses are competing against themselves.” – Mary-Alice Stack “What matters to artists is the creation of the work in the first place.” – Mary-Alice Stack https://www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Jelena Sofronijevic. "And this is precisely the secret held by all those who go by foot: Life is prolonged when you walk. Walking expands time rather than collapses it." -- Erling Kagge. This week we talk about a book that's got Marcus all reflective and philosophical about the everyday activity of walking. Join us as we stroll and meander through all the things that walking opens up for us -- how we experience the world, being present (or not) in calls, emotions, the nature of time, and neuroplasticity. Wait, what? Yes. In true Steph and Marcus fashion, this conversation went everywhere our little feet could take us. This was a delightfully reflective episode and we'd love if you came and walked with us. Let us know what walking does for you!
