Get in touch with us!What happens when a beloved classic gets reimagined three decades later? That's the question at the heart of my deep dive into Enemy in Shadows, Cubicle 7's director's cut of the legendary Enemy Within campaign for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. As someone who first attempted to run this campaign as a 12-year-old back in 1988, this review comes from a place of both nostalgia and critical analysis. The original Shadows Over Bugenhaven was brilliant but chaotically organized – I spent half my time frantically flipping through pages, hunting for crucial information while my players waited. This new edition promises to maintain the brilliance while fixing those organizational nightmares. The production values are gorgeous, with artwork that perfectly captures the grim darkness of the Warhammer world. The adventure structure has been significantly improved, and the story is refreshingly honest and properly Warhammer. However, the book isn't without flaws. The "Grognard boxes" are problematic and the lack of a clear campaign vision is concerning. So, how does the book fare? Tune in to find out!Have you experienced The Enemy Within? If you've ever asked, “How do I actually play Warhammer Fantasy Role Play?”—this episode is your crash course, chaos crash cart, and comedy club all rolled into one. Grab your dice, pack your herbs, and don't forget your gloves. Things are about to get weird in the woods. Thank you to our sponsor, DM Adamantine! If you're ready to play with an expert GM in a one-of-a-kind setting, check out Dungeon Master Adamantine at dungeonmasteradamantine.com or find him on StartPlaying for custom sessions in Greece or online! In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the crew dives headfirst into the brutal, baroque, and frequently blood-soaked world of Warhammer Fantasy Role Play (WFRP). If you're curious how to actually play this wonderfully grim system, this episode is your map through the muck. Starting from character creation and setting expectations, all the way to navigating the forest of chaos (literally), the group explores what makes WFRP so distinct: the constant tension between survival and corruption, competition and camaraderie, comedy and catastrophe. The party's in-character quest for the rare herb Bitterknot becomes the perfect showcase for WFRP's mechanics and tone. Along the way, they meet eccentric NPCs, battle chaos-touched creatures, and argue about gloves—a classic day in the Empire. Whether you're a grizzled veteran of the Old World or thinking about picking up the dice for the first time, this episode shows you how to embrace the grit, gallows humor, and genuine strategy of Warhammer Fantasy. Key Takeaways Setting & Tone Warhammer presents a grim, dangerous world filled with corruption, chaos, and questionable hygiene. Altdorf acts as a central hub for player activity and plot progression. Survival, suspicion, and dark humor are essential ingredients to the game's tone. Character & Story Characters come with detailed backstories that influence gameplay decisions. The party dynamic (rivals for a master's favor) fuels roleplaying opportunities and in-game tension. Motivations matter—success often depends on how well characters leverage their personal goals. Low resources and high stakes force creative problem-solving and resource management. The Quest for Bitterknot The search for the rare herb Bitterknot ties together exploration, negotiation, and danger. Players interact with memorable NPCs like the allergy-prone Old Marla and helpful friend Kruger. Preparation, like acquiring gloves and supplies, plays a huge role in staying alive. Exploration & Conflict The Blood Pine Woods are filled with beastmen, warp-tainted terrain, and the occasional dead horse. Exploration includes clue-finding (claw marks, glowing signs) and evasion through stealth. Highwaymen introduce social conflict, resolved through intimidation or diplomacy. Combat & Mechanics Initiative rolls set the pace; positioning and terrain influence the outcomes. Combat emphasizes both tactical planning and the chaos of dice-driven randomness. Environmental strategy can be key to survival. Warpstone introduces a risk-reward dilemma: magical power at the cost of corruption and mutation. Corruption & Consequences Corruption checks protect characters from warping into something... less than human. Warpstone may grant power, but repeated use can change characters in dramatic ways. Decisions in combat and exploration ripple through the story and character arcs. Humor & Group Dynamics Unexpected moments like daisy allergies and potion mishaps add levity to grim adventures. Player banter and team dynamics are essential to the fun and flavor of the game. Return to Altdorf provides a moment of reflection—and the kind of closure only WFRP can offer. Graeme Davis was part of the team that brought WFRP to incredible life, and his career has taken him to amazing worlds like Vampire the Masquerade, Supernatural, and Vaesen. In our conversation we explored the opportunities and perils of drawing on folklore for making monsters, such as with the Fimir of Warhammer, and the ways in which encounter and creature creation differs across different RPG worlds and rules systems. We also talked about working with other legendary figures like Mike Brunton and Bryan Ansell.Graeme Davis interview._____________________________ Check out Graeme's Monster of the Month Club: [Monster of the Month Club]https://www.patreon.com/MonsteroftheMonthClub[Monster of the Month Free Samples]https://graemedavis.wordpress.com/2025/02/05/the-monster-of-the-month-club-try-before-you-buy/[Monster of the Month Club Discord]https://discord.gg/J3dbnav5YJ_____________________________ Support My Work: DOWNLOAD MY FANTASY BATTLE SCENARIO DEAD KING WENCESLAS:https://jordansorcery.itch.io/dead-king-wenceslasELEMENT GAMES AFFILIATE LINK:https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/jordansorceryKO-FI:https://ko-fi.com/jordansorceryDISCORD:https://discord.gg/vtjKzTGevDINSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/jordansorcery/ BLUESKY:https://bsky.app/profile/jordansorcery.bsky.social WEBSITE:https://jordansorcery.com/_____________________________ Art, Music, and Copyright: Images used belong to their respective copyright owners Jordan Sorcery Theme by Joylin Music Jordan Sorcery Heraldry by Becka Moor Jordan Sorcery Heraldry and Theme copyright @jordansorcerySupport the show

In the 1980s Bryan Ansell took over Games Workshop and reshaped it into a brand new company. Paul Cockburn joined Games Workshop from TSR UK having worked on Imagine Magazine and supplements for Dungeons & Dragons.During his time at GW Paul oversaw the relocation of White Dwarf from London to Nottingham and its evolution into a dedicated Warhammer magazine. He also helped to launch Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and worked on an early plan for Games Workshop fiction novels that could have seen Terry Pratchett tackle the Old World!#Warhammer #WarhammerFantasyRoleplay #WFRP #WhiteDwarf #RPG #GamesWorkshop_____________________________ Support My Work: DOWNLOAD MY FANTASY BATTLE SCENARIO DEAD KING WENCESLAS:https://jordansorcery.itch.io/dead-king-wenceslasELEMENT GAMES AFFILIATE LINK:https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/jordansorceryKO-FI:https://ko-fi.com/jordansorceryDISCORD:https://discord.gg/vtjKzTGevDINSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/jordansorcery/ BLUESKY:https://bsky.app/profile/jordansorcery.bsky.social WEBSITE:https://jordansorcery.com/_____________________________ References, Sources, and Links: [My History of GW Books]https://youtu.be/TtLvM2wCa9w_____________________________ Art, Music, and Copyright: Images used belong to their respective copyright owners Jordan Sorcery Theme by Joylin Music Jordan Sorcery Heraldry by Becka Moor Jordan Sorcery Heraldry and Theme copyright @jordansorcerySupport the show
