Do you struggle with living in the past? Do you find yourself worrying about the future? I'm sure at some point in your life you would answer those questions with a big YES! Today I sit down with Jeanne Stevens and discuss how it's possible to find truth and peace by living in the present.Jeanne Stevens is the founder and co-lead pastor with her husband of Soul City Church in Chicago, Illinois. Jeanne seeks to live healthy rhythms while being a wife, mom, speaker, author, and leader. She is passionate about helping people wake up to their purpose as they pursue a life of wholehearted freedom. Jeanne shares how blame, shame, guilt, grief, and bitterness draw us back to our past, make us worry about the future, and keep us from living in the present. She encourages us to take our thoughts captive and dwell with God who is always in the present. Jeanne and I talk about the reality of this in our parenting journey and in our marriages. Jeanne Stevens is a fellow Midwest girl! Hooray! I was honored to finally meet her and have her on For Real. Jeanne lives with her family in Chicago, where she co-pastors Soul City Church. You know that I only chat with folks who will be real with us, and let me just say that Jeanne perfectly fits that bill. Her new book, What's Here Now? How to Stop Rehashing the Past and Rehearsing the Future—And Start Receiving the Present, is like a litmus test for how to really flourish in the right here, right now. I loved the book and loved learning from Jeanne in this conversation. Jeanne Stevens is one of the lead pastors of Soul City Church in Chicago's dynamic West Loop neighborhood, which she and her husband, Jarrett, started in 2010. Soul City is one of the fastest-growing urban churches in the United States. Jeanne has had the opportunity to lead and speak into the lives of thousands of people across the U.S. and around the world. She is a sought-after speaker, leader, and writer. Her passion to develop people to live boldly & fully gives her a unique voice of hope and challenge. Jeanne is the author of multiple devotionals including the newly released Less is More as well as Everyday Brave, Grit & Grace, and You Are Enough. Her newest book What's Here Now? is available now. In addition to pastoring Soul City Church, Jeanne finds great joy in being a wife to Jarrett, and a mom to her son, Elijah, and daughter, Gigi. You can find her online at JeanneStevens.com and on Instagram. Visit KimberlyStuart.com/podcast for more from this episode.

Over the next few episodes we are turning our attention from a leader's personal sabbath practice towards how they can form and shape their communities around sabbath. We'll be talking to a number of pastors and leaders about their efforts and challenges in leading others in the practice.   Today Ruth sits down with Jeanne and Jarrett Stevens. As co-pastors of a busy church in Chicago, the Stevens have been saved by rhythms of work and rest. Ruth talks with Jeanne and Jarrett about their own practices of sabbath, the ways they've tried to incorporate these rhythms in their church, and the challenges and opportunities presented in this as we emerge from COVID. They also pose the question, what would it look like as a leader to leave a legacy of sabbath keeping in their community?   Jarrett & Jeanne Stevens founded and have served as co-lead pastors of Soul City Church in Chicago, IL for the past 11 years. They have both authored several books. Jarrett wrote “The Deity Formerly Known as God,” “Four Small Words”, and his latest release, “Praying Through.” Jeanne has authored many devotionals, “Everyday Brave,” “Grit & Grace,” and “You are Enough.” She is a contributing author to “Twelve Women of the Bible” and “Real Women, Real Faith.” She has a new book released in May of 2022 called “What's Here Now?” They are both passionate about helping people wake up to the transforming love of Jesus and experience soul-level change in every area of their lives.  Purchase Ruth's new book! Embracing Rhythms of Work and Rest is out now, wherever you buy books (Amazon | Barnes and Noble | Bookshop.org).   You can also pre-order the Sabbath Journal, which will be available sometime in January 2023.   This season of our podcast is sponsored by GoodKind. I know that you are a woman who wants to live with intentionality and presence. You want to show up for your people, and you don't want to miss the good that God offers you right this very minute.  And yet… we can't focus on where we are now because we're thinking about that hard conversation we need to have next week, OR we are thinking about how unkind and mean to our mother we were our senior year of high school. So how can we stay present? How do we leave distracted living behind? Jeanne and I talk through How to know you're living a distracted life Whether you can trust your emotions And what it means to be present in your real life. But it took the experience of facing three deep losses in a short period of time to finally learn how to process—and ultimately let go—of grief, freeing her up to truly live in the present.  In today's episode, Jeanne shares how a childhood experience led her to believe a narrative about her life that no longer serves her.  She also shares the ways she's learned to live in the present through noticing and naming what's happening around her, asking and answering the all-important question: "What's Here Now?"  Jeanne Stevens is the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, one of America's fastest growing urban churches. The modern world is a relentless waterfall of information一sound bytes and images flood our minds and trouble our hearts. Enter Jeanne Stevens, whose recent book, What's Here Now?, unpacks the power of presence and how it offers peace so many ache for in our frenzied age. Steve Carter asks Jeanne to unpack her book's punchy tagline: How to stop rehashing the past, and rehearsing the future, and start receiving the present. Presence begins with an awareness of your body, emotions, and thoughts一aspects of our God-created existence that have been neglected in the church. Jeanne also shares some preparation hacks she's honed through the years: the vital role of eliminating content, how to speak to the soul, the urgency to touch on tension in the first five minutes of a talk, and how to share stories that showcase her humanity rather than airbrush it.  EPISODE LINKS Jeanne's book: What's Here Now? (00:00-09:06): According to a new report, Christians who find it difficult to freely express their beliefs in society due to secular intolerance are practicing “various forms of self-censorship.” (09:06-18:38): New York Mayor Eric Adams posted on Twitter: "Drag storytellers, and the libraries and schools that support them, are advancing a love of diversity, personal expression, and literacy that is core to what our city embraces." Brian and Aubrey are a little befuddled by the issue, but they tried to do a deep dive to understand it. (18:38-28:40): Brian and Aubrey took a break from the more substantive conversations to take a look at some weird stories from around the internet. (28:40-37:57): Aubrey helped Brian celebrate Father's Day by educating him on the history of the special day. (37:57-49:33): Jeanne Stevens is the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago. She joined Brian and Aubrey to talk about her new book “What's Here Now?: How to Stop Rehashing the Past and Rehearsing the Future--and Start Receiving the Present” (49:33-1:00:12): Top Five List: Top famous TV dads of all time See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello and welcome! Today I am joined by the amazing speaker, leader, and writer, Jeanne Stevens. Let me just say that I waste no time at all in this episode by asking her all of my many questions about her trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, You heard that right… Mt. Kilimanjaro! That's so amazing! I asked the questions, and she delivered my friends… from hilarious to deeply personal thoughts; she shared all the details with us about what God was doing in her in the midst of this life-changing experience. And interestingly enough, Jeanne shares how she wonders if her book didn't actually start to take shape during her experiences on Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Her soon-to-release book is called What's Here Now?, and I just love the subtitle - How to stop rehashing the past, rehearsing the future, and start receiving the present. So good. I promise you don't want to miss listening in to hear Jeanne teach us how to embrace the present moment and all that God has for us here, now. Jeanne Stevens is also the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, one of America's fastest-growing urban churches. Prior to starting Soul City Church, Stevens was on the pastoral staff at Willow Creek Community Church and North Point Community Church. Jeanne's passion is to help people wake up to their purpose as they pursue a life of wholehearted freedom. She lives in Chicago with her husband, Jarrett, and their two children. What's Here Now will be available nationwide on May 17, 2022.  Listen in to learn more about: Valuable questions to ask ourselves as a way to come into our “now” moments often throughout the day,  How the present is where God lives, and it is where God invites us to live with Him. The differences between our automatic self and our authentic self.  Favorite quotes: ~ When things don't go the way you believe they should go, it is packed with all the very best learning.  ~ It was such a great inner teacher for me to not make it to the top and to unwind all of what that meant in my life. ~We are so inclined to think about what happened, to go to the ‘what was, the what ifs and all I had was what IS' ,this present moment - here on the mountain. And the thing to do each day was to put one foot in front of the other and to be present with that. ~I was doing the work of God but the work of God was deteriorating in me. ~What I began to realize and recognize in my own life  was that the places  where I was most hanging out were in the past and in my future. I was all about rehashing things that already happened or rehearsing things that had not yet happened and I wasn't allowing myself to be present to this NOW moment.  ~I need to locate myself to this location and check into this present moment. In this episode I answered this question: How can I calm myself down when I am feeling stressed so often?
