Joy is at the heart of Christ. And yet, joy is the noun I struggle with most.  Joy causes a hitch in my throat that says, “But wait; what about all the hurt and sadness and violence?” Joy feels irrelevant or off-key or out of step in a world where: Human trafficking and slavery exist Women in the workplace face a wage disparity Racism flourishes Without provocation, one country attacks another country, and the world condemns with words, sends money, but doesn't intervene. Joy feels like stand-up comedy at a funeral. And yet, despite all our hang-ups about joy, joy is inextricably tied to the birth of Jesus Christ. Key Quotes “We've all heard the phrase, ‘God cares more about your character than your happiness,' as if an infinite God doesn't have the capacity to care about both simultaneously. - Jill E. McCormick “Perhaps joy is so hard for us to receive and understand because it is what Jesus wants for us, AND what our enemy works hardest to steal. ” - Jill E. Our great, big, powerful God invites us to have the great, big powerful gift of faith. Yet, this feels daunting to us. But what if our great big powerful God who created and offers the great big powerful gift of faith understands the beauty of small steps? When we look at the faithful giants of our faith, may we see the great big outcomes AND the small steps of obedience. What if faith is a big gift made of small steps? What if this gift of belief is stitched together with questions and doubts? What if faith is the repetitive motion of listening, acting, asking, and doing it all over again? What if our faith is made up of God asking questions of us and us asking questions back? Perhaps faith doesn't look or feel like absolute certainty but is a track record built over time and based on obedience and questions.  Perhaps faith is belief plus doubt plus courage to question plus the audacity to lean our whole weight on an inconceivable answer because we know in whom we have believed.   Maybe the great big powerful gift of faith is simply taking one step closer to the voice of Jesus and trusting that He alone is responsible for the outcomes.   Key Quotes “When God speaks, He speaks life into existence.” - Jill E. We will revisit a well-worn story of a God who loves nearness with us and whose hallmark and name bear His With-ness. A story that started in the garden and ends in eternity.  A story of a God who has taken the form of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, AND who put on flesh and dwelt among us.  A story of the infinite turned infant.  A story of a God whose kingdom has come, is here now, and will be forever.  A story of 400 years of silence broken by the cries of a baby.  A story of a God who owns the cattle on a thousand hills and started His life in the trough of cows.  This is the story of hope. For the next four weeks, we will follow the themes of the Advent candles we light each Sunday: Today, in Episode 140, we'll speak of hope Next week, we'll speak about faith In our third week together, we'll speak of joy And our final week of Advent – and our final episode of 2022 – we'll speak about peace. Key Quotes “Hope is a gift as good as done.” - Jill E. McCormick “Because Jesus is hope and Jesus is life, the opposite of hope is death.” - Jill E. McCormick “Death is the sound of an apple crunching. And hope is the sound of the cry of a baby, the hammer of a nail through divine flesh, the grinding of a gravestone rolling along loose gravel.” - Jill E. Description: There has been a tremendous amount of personal and collective grief over the past couple of years. Navigating it all has been hard. And for those in positions of leadership, it's been all the more burdensome. So how do we pay attention to the past, look ahead to the future, but live and do the work in this moment? How do we process and grow into all the grief? Author and speaker, pastor, and leader Jeanne Stevens shares beautiful wisdom with the Be the Bridge community about the difference in blame, shame, and guilt and the need to live at peace with God with ourselves so that we can live at peace with others. She and Latasha Morrison talk about the importance of accessing the presence of God. And they discuss what is helpful and unhelpful in the grieving process. This grace filled conversation will help you embrace change, appreciate losses, and remember that you are not alone. Quotes: “The scriptures say that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, which is our hope that we can lean on. But the only place where we can experience God is in the present.” -Jeanne Stevens “What we cannot face, we cannot change”. -Jeanne Stevens “We cannot experience the peace of God if we don't know how to access the presence of God. And the presence of God is always the here and the now.” -Jeanne Stevens “On the other side, there can be joy again. For Jeanne Stevens, it didn't take long to see herself in her Enneagram type. But it took the experience of facing three deep losses in a short period of time to finally learn how to process—and ultimately let go—of grief, freeing her up to truly live in the present.  In today's episode, Jeanne shares how a childhood experience led her to believe a narrative about her life that no longer serves her.  She also shares the ways she's learned to live in the present through noticing and naming what's happening around her, asking and answering the all-important question: "What's Here Now?"  Jeanne Stevens is the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, one of America's fastest growing urban churches. We don't like slow growth. We like fast paced, smooth sailing, and abundant growth. We like achievements and we like them NOW. Especially as Christians we are after a certain image to tell the world that we are perfectly put together on behalf of the gospel. But what if growth and sanctification was a slow, gentle process. A steady smoothing out of our edges and flaws being made new by a good, gracious God. Today's conversation with Mary Marantz explores making room for slow growth.  Resources: https://www.amazon.com/Slow-Growth-Equals-Strong-Roots/dp/0800738462/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=slow+growth+equals+strong+roots&qid=1659410400&sprefix=slow+growth%2Caps%2C133&sr=8-1 (Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots by Mary Marantz) https://www.amazon.com/Dirt-Growing-Strong-Broken-Beautiful/dp/0800738454/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=dirt+mary+marantz&qid=1659410378&sprefix=dirt+mary%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-1 (Dirt by Mary Marantz) https://www.amazon.com/Awake-Paying-Attention-Matters-Pulling/dp/0764238523/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=awake+anjuli+paschall&qid=1659410352&sprefix=awake+anju%2Caps%2C133&sr=8-1 (Awake by Anjuli Paschall) https://www.amazon.com/Whats-Here-Now-Rehearsing-Future/dp/0800740858 (What's Here Now? by Jeanne Stevens) https://www.amazon.com/When-Strivings-Cease-Self-Improvement-Life-Transforming/dp/1400224993/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=when+striving+cease+by+ruth+chou+simmons&qid=1659410280&sprefix=when+strivin%2Caps%2C129&sr=8-1 (When Strivings Cease by Ruth Chou Simons) https://www.amazon.com/Power-Place-Choosing-Stability-Rootless/dp/1400212537/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1659410308&sr=8-1 (The Power of Place by Daniel Gothe) achieverquiz.com Connect with Mary: marymarantz.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-UdzJ9w-UFPv0cYPF9Le2w IG: @marymarantz Connect with Faith School: YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVLewmak0ZIb-un99yUJ1_w (Faith School) IG: https://www.instagram.com/leah.rempel/ (@leah.rempel) and http://instagram.com/faithschoolpod (@faithschoolpod) http://leahrempel.com/ (leahrempel.com)

Let us embrace the ever-present presence of God In this episode, the incredible, Jeanne Stevens shares from her new book, What's here Now? How to Stop Rehashing the Past and Rehearsing the Future-- and Start Receiving the Present. Jeanne is an author, speaker, and the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago. After finding herself in burnout and weariness, Jeanne discovered that while she was rehashing the past and living for the future, she was missing the present. When we try to change something that cannot be changed or control something that God does not want us to control, peace feels distant and almost unavailable. God revealed to Jeanne the key to peace is in the present. Join us in the Living Room as we discuss ways to find freedom, allow God to draw us close, and embrace the ever-resent presence of God. Important Takeaways from Show We can rehash the past or control the future, but the present moments are where we find peace. We need to be living in the ever-present moments in order to receive the ever-present help. (Psalm 46:1) Be thoughtful about patterns of the past and plans for the future but find contentment in the now. Peace is not contingent on our understanding, it is contingent on us being present with God. Replace the question from, “why” with the question, “what's here now?” Grace means we start by knowing that we are accepted and loved just as we are, and our job is to connect people to the Good Shepherd. That is when we are living on purpose. Presence is an ongoing practice that will always need to be worked toward and focused on. As we cultivate God's presence in our lives, breath in and out, notice our emotions, and take captive every thought that is not from Him. The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14 Links from Show Join the Insider Club - Joanna's launch team! Jeanne's Book: What's Here Now? The modern world is a relentless waterfall of information一sound bytes and images flood our minds and trouble our hearts. Enter Jeanne Stevens, whose recent book, What's Here Now?, unpacks the power of presence and how it offers peace so many ache for in our frenzied age. Steve Carter asks Jeanne to unpack her book's punchy tagline: How to stop rehashing the past, and rehearsing the future, and start receiving the present. Presence begins with an awareness of your body, emotions, and thoughts一aspects of our God-created existence that have been neglected in the church. Jeanne also shares some preparation hacks she's honed through the years: the vital role of eliminating content, how to speak to the soul, the urgency to touch on tension in the first five minutes of a talk, and how to share stories that showcase her humanity rather than airbrush it.  EPISODE LINKS Jeanne's book: What's Here Now? Jeanne has poured her soul into this message that is going to transform so many of your lives… It's not the state of the world. It's not your particular circumstances. It's not even your turbulent relationships. When it comes down to it, what keeps us from experiencing peace is either living in the past or living for the future. When we obsess over what's already happened or put all of our efforts into creating a picture-perfect tomorrow, we miss what is for us here and now. Hello and welcome! Today I am joined by the amazing speaker, leader, and writer, Jeanne Stevens. Let me just say that I waste no time at all in this episode by asking her all of my many questions about her trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, You heard that right… Mt. Kilimanjaro! That's so amazing! I asked the questions, and she delivered my friends… from hilarious to deeply personal thoughts; she shared all the details with us about what God was doing in her in the midst of this life-changing experience. And interestingly enough, Jeanne shares how she wonders if her book didn't actually start to take shape during her experiences on Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Her soon-to-release book is called What's Here Now?, and I just love the subtitle - How to stop rehashing the past, rehearsing the future, and start receiving the present. So good. I promise you don't want to miss listening in to hear Jeanne teach us how to embrace the present moment and all that God has for us here, now. Jeanne Stevens is also the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, one of America's fastest-growing urban churches. Prior to starting Soul City Church, Stevens was on the pastoral staff at Willow Creek Community Church and North Point Community Church. Jeanne's passion is to help people wake up to their purpose as they pursue a life of wholehearted freedom. She lives in Chicago with her husband, Jarrett, and their two children. What's Here Now will be available nationwide on May 17, 2022.  Listen in to learn more about: Valuable questions to ask ourselves as a way to come into our “now” moments often throughout the day,  How the present is where God lives, and it is where God invites us to live with Him. The differences between our automatic self and our authentic self.  Favorite quotes: ~ When things don't go the way you believe they should go, it is packed with all the very best learning.  ~ It was such a great inner teacher for me to not make it to the top and to unwind all of what that meant in my life. ~We are so inclined to think about what happened, to go to the ‘what was, the what ifs and all I had was what IS' ,this present moment - here on the mountain. And the thing to do each day was to put one foot in front of the other and to be present with that. ~I was doing the work of God but the work of God was deteriorating in me. ~What I began to realize and recognize in my own life  was that the places  where I was most hanging out were in the past and in my future. I was all about rehashing things that already happened or rehearsing things that had not yet happened and I wasn't allowing myself to be present to this NOW moment.  ~I need to locate myself to this location and check into this present moment. In this episode I answered this question: How can I calm myself down when I am feeling stressed so often? When it comes to creating cultures of psychological safety - building both trust and belonging - how can we better lead from a place of emotional and relational intelligence that will enable both ourselves and our teams to show up more fully? In this week's episode, Jenni has a conversation with Jeanne Stevens, Founder and Co- Lead Pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, IL. - one of America's fastest growing urban churches. Prior to starting Soul City Church, Stevens was on the pastoral staff at Willow Creek Community Church and North Point Community Church. A sought-after speaker, leader, and writer, Jeanne's passion is to help people wake up to their purpose as they pursue a life of wholehearted freedom. We were created to be “human beings” not “human doings”. But how do we as leaders manage the very real tensions between rehashing the past, rehearsing the future, all while learning to lead from a place of presence that postures us to lead with both a peace and a power that ultimately challenges those around us to do the same? Because we can reflect and we can plan but that will not happen without intentional space created in the present. For a next step, check out our 4Sight: Culture Blindspot Assessment.
