Tactical Living

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton share a fascinating personal story about an eerie Christmas night experience while on patrol. Their trusted horse was bucking and uneasy, leading them to wonder if something beyond the natural was at play—maybe even extraterrestrial beings. This episode dives into the importance of instincts in police work and how first responders rely on gut feelings to navigate challenging and unpredictable situations. You'll learn five key examples of instinct in action and practical tips on how to hone and trust your instincts in the field. The Importance of Instinct in Law Enforcement: Understand how intuition plays a critical role in decision-making, situational awareness, and staying safe in high-stress environments. Five Examples of Instinct in Police Work: 1. Trusting Your Gut on Traffic Stops: Example: Sensing that something isn't right during a routine stop, leading to closer observation and uncovering illegal activity. Why It's Important: Helps officers identify potential threats before they escalate. 2. Reading Body Language During Interactions: Example: Noticing subtle signs of nervousness or aggression in a suspect that indicate a potential risk. Why It's Important: Enhances officer safety and allows for proactive measures to de-escalate situations. 3. Choosing the Right Approach in Unfamiliar Environments: Example: Entering a dark building during a call and instinctively recognizing potential hiding spots or ambush points. Why It's Important: Improves situational awareness and reduces vulnerability in dangerous scenarios. 4. Recognizing Subtle Clues in Investigations: Example: Picking up on inconsistencies in a witness's story that lead to a breakthrough in the case. Why It's Important: Sharpens investigative skills and helps uncover the truth more efficiently. 5. Reacting Quickly in High-Stakes Situations: Example: Sensing imminent danger during a confrontation and instinctively taking action to protect yourself or others. Why It's Important: Saves lives and minimizes harm during critical incidents. How to Listen to Your Instincts: 1. Stay Present in the Moment: Focus on your surroundings and tune into your environment to enhance your awareness. 2. Reflect on Past Experiences: Learn from situations where your instincts proved correct, and use them to guide future decisions. 3. Build Your Knowledge Base: The more you learn and train, the sharper your instincts become, as they're often rooted in subconscious knowledge. 4. Practice Situational Awareness: Continuously assess your environment and potential risks to fine-tune your gut reactions. 5. Trust Your Intuition: Don't dismiss a feeling just because you can't immediately explain it—instinct is often your brain processing subtle cues you haven't consciously noticed. Why Instincts Are Crucial for First Responders: Learn how listening to your gut can mean the difference between safety and danger in the field. How to Develop and Strengthen Your Instincts: Discover ways to train your intuition and build confidence in your ability to make quick, accurate decisions. Why This Matters: As a first responder, your instincts are one of your most valuable tools. Whether it's sensing danger, solving a case, or even interpreting the unsettling behavior of a patrol horse, learning to trust and refine your intuition is essential for staying safe and effective on the job. By writing down these triggers, we can begin to identify patterns that allow us to avoid or better manage them. For instance, if work deadlines induce panic, starting projects earlier can alleviate that pressure. On the other hand, if family gatherings are triggers, planning enjoyable activities can create a more positive experience. I encourage listeners to adopt proactive habits that reduce stressors before they escalate. We then explore the importance of taking a step back during high-stress moments. Acknowledging the need for distance in stressful encounters allows us to observe the situation more clearly and respond more thoughtfully. This exercise not only applies in professional settings like meetings but also in personal relationships, helping to diffuse conflicts before they escalate. Additionally, I recommend establishing a centered space prior to engaging with external pressures like emails or calls. Talking through our stressors with others can also bring clarity. Whether it's discussing work frustrations with a colleague or seeking support from friends, sharing our burdens can often lead to newfound insights and actionable solutions. I further discuss the power of creating structured plans for overwhelming tasks, which can help restore a sense of control and calm. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Breaking the Rules of OCD: Finding Freedom through Mindfulness and Aikido

People with OCD often feel trapped by strict rules in their daily lives. These unwritten rules might mean always trying to control their thoughts, constantly seeking certainty, seeing anxiety as a sign of immediate danger, feeling personally responsible for preventing harm, analyzing every thought meticulously, striving for perfection in everything, and keeping their struggle with OCD hidden from others. In today's episode of The OCD Whisperer Podcast, we sit down with  Dr. Kim Rockwell Evans, a licensed professional counselor and licensed marriage and family therapist with over 20 years of experience. Dr. Evans is  the author of "Breaking the Rules of OCD: Find Lasting Freedom from the Unwanted Thoughts, Rituals, and Compulsions that Rule Your Life," During the conversation, Dr. Evans discusses treating OCD and anxiety disorders, focusing on the core issue of agency loss. She emphasizes that individuals with OCD often feel compelled to perform rituals, believing they lack choice, and advises recognizing one's agency to make different choices. Her book outlines seven rules to break OCD's grip, including challenging perfectionism, embracing uncertainty, and addressing discomfort intolerance. The episode also clarifies ERP therapy misconceptions and normalizes setbacks as growth opportunities. Dr. Evans introduces Aikido principles as a metaphor for managing OCD triggers, advocating redirecting energy rather than confrontation. She concludes with the "PASSION" acronym: Pause, Pivot, and Proceed; Accept Experiences; Strengthen Your Stance; Practice Self-Compassion; Invite Exposure; Observe Thoughts; and Stay Present. These principles help individuals build resilience and live fulfilling lives free from OCD constraints.   In This Episode [01:23] The motivation behind writing her book  [02:32] The seven rules of OCD [04:11] Common misconceptions about OCD [05:37] Blending therapy approaches in the book [07:08] Challenges and relapses in OCD treatment [08:38] Making therapy accessible [10:15] Mindfulness and agency in OCD treatment [13:42] Mindfulness during exposure [18:23] The power of mindfulness [20:32] The most important rule to break [21:29] The resistance battle [23:03] Aikido principles [26:31] Passion acronym Notable Quotes [04:11] “There have been many tears of relief shed in my office when people find out that they're not broken.”- Dr. Kim Rockwell Evans [10:57] “We all want to feel good and we all want to do things that will help us feel better.” Dr. Kim Rockwell Evans [17:37]  “If people can get in touch with what a chore it is to do the compulsion, then that's an incentive to not resist so much but actually to learn to allow.” Dr. Kim Rockwell Evans [21:29] “'What you resist keeps persisting. It's a counterintuitive thing, and when you resist, you can notice this battle within yourself.”-Dr. Kim Rockwell Evans [23:03]  “If you notice that OCD trigger, rather than going straight into the compulsion, pause and say, "I have an opportunity to learn here."' Dr. Kim Rockwell Evans [26:31]  “You can live your life with passion even though OCD shows up sometimes.” Dr. Kim Rockwell Evans   Our Guest Dr. Kim Rockwell-Evans, PhD, LPC, LMFT, has specialized in anxiety and OCD treatment in Dallas for 30+ years. But if it feels like autopilot or you're going beyond comfy fullness, it might be mindless eating in action. I have struggled with mindless evening eating in the past and I've recently had this old habit creep up on me and as I share in this episode, I've spent well over 100k on my health and education over the past few years and I still struggle at times. In this episode, we want to share the two main areas contributing to mindless evening eating: the physiological side and the psychological side. We'll discuss the signals you're receiving from your body from that day's nutrient intake and why this may be a factor with your hunger cues. We'll also dive into the psychological side and break down some key habits around eating such as plating your food instead of eating it out of the container or package, removing distractions, breathing deep and relaxing before eating, and more! Time Stamps: (1:22) Eating At Night and Feeling Out of Control (5:32) Omar Getting On Calls With Women Just Like You (7:12) Managing the Evening Eating (9:12) How Well Did You Nourish Your Body Today? (9:42) The Psychology Side (13:00) Plate Your Food (14:26) Remove Distractions (16:02) Breathe Deep and Relax (18:32) Stay Present (20:44) Reflect On It (21:52) Recap (29:44) Please Rate and Review---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? Since then, he has been on a mission to bring mindfulness and meditation to people in practical and usable ways.
