But what if fear isn't your enemy? What if it's actually pointing you toward your purpose? In this deeply transformative conversation with bestselling author Mary Marantz, we explore how the experiences that once made us feel underestimated—and the relentless drive to overachieve—can keep us stuck in cycles of perfectionism, people-pleasing, and fear-fueled productivity.  Mary and I unpack the myths of not-enoughness, talk about the parts of ourselves that try to protect us from failure, and offer a new path forward: one where your gifts and your story become your superpowers. Mary shares how she approaches life with urgency, not fear, because she knows the clock is ticking and the dreams in her heart deserve action. Do we truly realize that the more we do hard things, the more we can do hard things?  We talk about what it means to stop waiting for the perfect moment, and how your brain can be trained to do hard things on purpose.  She discusses Predictive Brain Theory, perfectionism, the desire to fast-forward through the hard parts of chasing your dreams, self-sabotage, and why most people give up before consistency ever kicks in.  If you've felt stuck in fear, paralyzed by procrastination, or are just tired of sitting on the sidelines of your own life, this episode will challenge you to stop waiting and go do the thing. There's a geography of limitation that exists not on any map, but in the quiet territories of our own making. Stories that whisper: this is as far as you'll go. Today, we are talking with Mary Marantz - a woman who understands that our beginnings are not our boundaries. Growing up in a single-wide trailer on the tippy top of Fenwick Mountain, she learned something profound: that grace isn't about erasing your history, but making peace with it. Imagine a young girl watching the world from that precipice, learning that survival isn't just about enduring, but reimagining. Mary's journey from that trailer to Yale Law School isn't a bootstrapping narrative of triumph, but a meditation on grace, on the way unexpected paths unfold when we listen carefully to the whispers of our own potential. How do we create space between who we were told we could be and who we are actually called to become? How do we recognize that the most revolutionary act might be showing up, day after day, for the work that won't let go of us? Mary writes about fear like an old friend - not something to vanquish, but to understand. She knows that the stories we tell ourselves are powerful, that they can either keep us small or become the very ground from which we grow. So join us as we walk through those stories together - not as a roadmap, but as an invitation. Here's my conversation with Mary Marantz.Mary Marantz is the bestselling author of Dirt and Underestimated, as well as the host of the popular podcast The Mary Marantz Show. Hey friends + welcome to what will actually be the last conversation episode for the spring of 2025 + part 1 of what will now be a 2-part season of the Your Brand of Beautiful Podcast. This is a little bit of a change of plans but don't worry, more updates on a solo-episode coming your way next week! This week, we're chatting about a true underdog story with author, Mary Marantz. For those who don't know her, Mary's story is something special. She grew up in a West Virginia mountainside trailer + ended up being the first in her family to go to college — which just so happened to be Yale Law. Today we're talking all about her story + the books she's written about it — including her newest, ‘Underestimated' that comes out a WEEK FROM TODAY (pre-order details below). In our conversation Mary is very poetically painting the picture of her life, including... How the dirt floor of her upbringing + the roots she thought would keep her chained to where she was forever, became the very thing that would open the door to Yale law. Why Slow Growth = Strong Roots is her life's mantra (also the title of her second book). How her new book, Underestimated, uncoverss that fear holds a lot of names (like Perfectionism, Procrastination, People Pleasing, Impostor Syndrome, Overthinking… 14 in total) -- including a deep dive on perfectionism in this conversation! I just know this conversation is for someone out there listening and I can't wait for you to dive in. You'll have to tell me what you think! About Mary Marantz: Mary Marantz grew up in a trailer in rural West Virginia. The first of her immediate family to go to college, she went on to earn a master's degree in moral philosophy and a law degree from Yale. After ditching six-figure-salary law firm offers in London and New York and starting a business with her husband, Justin, together they have built their online education platform for creative entrepreneurs. Mary is a popular writer and speaker whose work has recently been featured by Business Insider, MSN, Bustle, and Brit+Co. And she is also the host of the iTunes Top 200 podcast, The Mary Marantz Show. She lives in an 1880s fixer-upper by the sea in New Haven, Connecticut with Justin and their two very fluffy golden retrievers, Goodspeed & Atticus. Mary Marantz knows how fear can hold us back. Even though she was able to leave the musty single-wide trailer of her childhood in West Virginia and make her way to Yale Law School, she always carried the fear that she would be found out. Even though she had worked hard and earned every grade and scholarship she received she thought others saw her as an imposter. So, she strove to be the best at everything she did, and she was. But the life of perfection has a way of draining the joy out of you. Mary finally realized that fear was holding her hostage to a life that didn't provide freedom and that he is a boring liar. In this episode she shares part of her fascinating story of growing up in rural West Virginia, which is the topic of her first book, Dirt, with a dad who was a proud eighth generation logger, a mom who cleaned houses and her amazing grandma Goldie. In her newest book, Underestimated, she shares how she overcame perfectionism, procrastination, people-pleasing and more. She understands the drive to prove others wrong and show everyone just how far you've come, while also doubting yourself at every turn. Mary has learned that we all must own the muddy parts of our stories so we can move forward in the purpose God has for us. Because, as Mary says, God does His best work in the muddy, messy, and broken if we'll only learn to dig in.  Go to Carolroper.org for show notes Join the Building Strong Homes community by signing up for email updates and receive my baked spaghetti recipe Also join the Building Strong Homes Facebook Community If you'd like to connect with me or have an idea for an episode you can email me at buildingstronghomes@gmail.com Watch on YouTube Underestimated: From a Single-Wide Trailer in W. In this episode, Rebecca talks about the importance of silencing our inner critic and focusing our hearts on God;s word. The podcast series follows each individual chapter of Rebecca's book Do the Thing: Gospel-Centered Goals, Gumption, and Grace for the Go-Getter Girl and explores relevant scripture passages in each episode (this one is about Chapter 10 - Silence the Inner Critic). She shares a journaling exercise she has developed based on a passage from Philippians (verse 8) that can help identify incorrect or unhelpful beliefs. In this episode, 2 Corinthians 2:14-17 is discussed which reminds us that we are the "aroma of Christ" and to spread the fragrance of the knowledge of him. The inner critic and overthinking are common themes explored in the conversation, and small steps and baby steps are encouraged to build trust and expand capacity. The fear of failure can also be overcome by taking action and recognizing that it's all "figureoutable." Rebecca proposes the idea of creating as an act of worship to shift towards creating from a place of love rather than punishment or self-deprecation. There is something about Mary Marantz's story and writing that I just connect so deeply with. Her memoir DIRT was one of my favorite reads of 2021 (listen to our conversation about it here) and she is back on the show to talk about her newest book, Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots, which came out last fall. In this episode, Mary and I talk about striving to be the most put together person in the room in the pursuit of perfection and acceptance, feeling like we need to prove that we deserve whatever success or opportunity we have, and how our little girl selves would be so happy with who we have become. (And how even still we wonder what it would be like if our lives were different.) The myth of momentum and success can be crippling. In this conversation with Mary and Jessica, we uncover the realizations that success is not what we're called to and we can actually go a lot further when we plan rest into the journey. At some point, you have to surrender that myth of success and learn to redefine it. We only move into significance when we turn that filter outward and concede the old stories we've told about ourselves.

In this episode, author Mary Marantz joins Sharon to talk about Mary's new book, Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots. Together, Sharon and Mary touch on important topics like perseverance, education, and extending gentleness to each other and our own selves. Our egos want to keep us safe, but when we continuously operate from a place of safety, taking risks can feel too scary. Ultimately, slow growth equals strong roots means that, when a tipping point day comes in our lives, we have worked hard to grow our character and foundation to meet new challenges with strength and success. Growth and hard work doesn't happen like a movie montage with a good soundtrack, it takes a lifetime. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
