Each Sunday, TED shares an episode of another podcast we think you'll love, handpicked for you… by us. Today we're sharing an episode of Far Flung. "I thought I'd come to paradise,” said Jane Ball Groom upon arriving in Soul City, North Carolina. It wasn't amenities or location that made Soul City paradise, but the promise of what it could be: a city built by Black people, for Black people. Our guests take us back to 1969 when the city was founded and built from (below) the ground up — and while the city itself was short-lived, we'll see how the seeds it sowed laid roots for spaces that celebrate and center Black culture today. For photos from the episode and more on the history of Soul City, head to the Souvenir Book of Soul City in the North Carolina digital collections.Special thanks to Shirlette Ammons who we could not do this story without, and our guests Charmaine McKissick-Melton, Jane Ball-Groom, Lianndra Davis, Lou Myers, Tobias Rose, and Derrick Beasley. Extra special thank you to Alan Thompson, who recorded the saxophone music you heard in this episode from Parish Street on Durham's Black Wall Street. Hosted on Acast. Community members in Soul City informal settlement, in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg are claiming that a nine year old boy is in hospital, after being shot by police from the Kagiso police station. According to residents in the area the police officers entered the informal settlement on Saturday and began looting spaza shops, and when questioned their actions an altercation began between community members and the police. During that incident, police allegedly fired live ammunition and an astray bullet hit the 9 year old boy. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC reporter, Pearl Magubane

Many North Carolinians outside of Warren County may not have heard of Soul City. Back in the early 1970's, it was one of 14 so-called new towns started under a federally funded program. As we kick off Black History Month, WRAL's Ken Smith explains how the dream of Soul City still exists.
Residents of the Soul City informal settlement in Kagiso on Gauteng's West Rand say they are living in fear of illegal miners who they say are living in the community. The residents say they are scared of being murdered as they face danger on an almost daily basis. Four suspected illegal miners were killed during a shooting incident in the settlement at the weekend. Three others were injured and taken to hospital. The deceased are three Lesotho nationals and a Mozambican. Police says the victims were seen being chased and shot at, by a group of armed suspects from a nearby illegal mining site. SABC reporter, Prabashini Moodley visited the settlement under police guard and filed this report.
We discuss Floyd McKissick's intentional community Soul City, North Carolina, its context, goals and why the project ultimately failed.

Laura Nyro wrote this song - (a tribute to torch singer Helen Merrill) - in 1966, but, it didn't do much for her at the time. Three years later, when The Fifth Dimension recorded it, it shot to number 1. The radiant lead vocalist, Marilyn McCoo, sang it to her betrothed, Billy Davis Jr., on the various television variety shows of the day, and audiences lapped it up. Nyro, the oddball composer-prodigy from the Bronx, consistently channeled her soulful declarations to many other artists of the time - (Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat and Tears, Barbara Streisand) before being identified as the singular genius behind the magic. My high school girlfriend Cindy was a 4'11'' spitfire with an identical twin. Her dad, Hank, a long-distance truck driver with a provocative (to put it generously) sense of humor, enjoyed teasing us. He called me “Keppy” (the yiddish word for Head, because my hair was thinning). Whenever this song came on the radio, trumpeting the refrain: “Marry Me, Bill!” - and it was ubiquitous - Hank, and Cindy's two older brothers, would give us shit mercilessly, - and I HATED IT. I hated the song and I hated them for pushing the uncomfortable question on us - because, despite the fact that Cindy hoped for the eventuality of matrimony, I didn't, and that was painful for her. Today this song sustains a shining memento for me - a reminder that I have enjoyed the gift of being loved by a soul who refused to give up on me. Fiercely loyal, uncompromising in her passions,- Cindy, my first love.

Ladies n' Genminminmin (er, min...) please welcome Award Winning Actress & fellow Bristol Old Vic Theatre School Alumni, Lucy Briers to 'The Clearing'.Lucy is from Theatre & Show Business Aristocracy here in the UK, as she is the daughter of Richard Briers, the famous UK TV Actor and National Treasure, now sadly no longer with us, but listen with delight as Lucy describes her joy and luck at having her very own 'Dad cupboard: With 250 or so DVDs, capturing his wonderful career on screen, if ever she needs a 'top-up' to watch him speak and move!Lucy Briers chooses Sheep Meadow, Central Park Manhattan as her ‘Soul City' and as her 'Clearing'. Despite her ‘weird blood disorder', Lucy is almost always smiling or chuckling - even when dealing with big or bittersweet issues. Like her father Richard's fame and popularity interfering with their walks together as a child or her mother's progressive Alzheimer's disease changing almost everything about her behaviour in her final years. Lucy herself alludes to her own serious illnesses in earlier years and how hands-on healing, helped her shrink a tumour by half! Listening closely to her narrative, we get a wonderful picture of a privileged, posh, bright, private-school-educated Sloane Ranger-type choosing a radical alternative to Oxbridge: a highly political, reputedly ‘gay', transformative, red-brick university - Lancaster! - to do a Degree in Theatre and Sculpture (Independent Studies). Here our lovely young Lucy shaved off her long hair, dyed what was left a bright orange and picked up the placards of protest. Then she went on to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School - to learn how to act. In 2019 Lucy Briers won the prestigious Clarence Derwent Award for Best Supporting Actress. (Lucy hadn't heard of it either - check it out, it's impressive, with the likes of Gene Hackman & Christopher Walken as previous recipients!) Lucy now sees herself as a ‘structured person' (even though she wittily describes herself as still being nevertheless ‘deeply superficial'!). But Lancaster was the first 'radical reconstruction' for her. So was getting divorced. So was the deeply poignant story we also get to hear about caring for her mother through the 'great de-tethering' of her Alzheimer's. Lucy has learned a lot of life's lessons the hard way and changed, she believes, for the better. That is her objective - to deepen her understanding of the human condition and share it on stage, with the spirit of her famous father supporting her whenever needed with words of encouragement from the wings. Lucy admits to a continuing crush on Ryan Gosling as well as personal and professional admiration for Tom Cruise. She is a most fascinating paradox: a very private person, who is also an extrovert. Here is a truly wonderful woman and a truly wonderful conversation!Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. MEMPHIS, TN — my guests today are Eric Matthews, Jillian Friot and Othman O'Malley. These three power players based in Memphis travel seamlessly between entrepreneurship, community, and wine. I kicked off Q2 by spending the weekend with them and some old friends in Soul City. We shared some fabulous meals, explored almost every corner of town and capped it all off by hosting a 6-hour long wine tasting at Jillian and Eric's home. Othman and I were slinging the best ancient and natural vino's we could get our hands-on. And the conversations were ongoing for hours. In short: we were building gravity. And in this episode, we unpack what that meant for each of us, our highlights of this incredible weekend and our biggest ambitions for the future of this community in Memphis. Sit back, relax and feel the gravity.

The Association was a pretty popular late-'60s singing group. Think Three Dog Night. Like that. Pretty similar arc. You know "Cherish", "Along Comes Mary", "Windy", etc. After the hits dried up, members like Jerry Yester fought the inevitable slide into oldies tours with the odd single, tour, and always in a state of flux. In 1975, a cobbled-together version of the band recorded what would be known to fans as "The Association Bites Back". While RCA was the record company of...record...they do not have tapes that they can remaster for a waiting public. But replacement member Larry Brown did put some of the songs on YouTube. Cassette quality, but a nice historical curio of a once-thriving concern. Here are 4. And oldies tours are exactly where they ended up. Think Three Dog Night. Travelin' Boy That's What She Said Time to Get High Cherish (a disco remake with a strangely funkified coda.) The Pullice - Can't Get Enough (1966) As seen on the lower right, this is how they spelled their name. McDonald's Commercial (1969) Grady Tate - Multiplication Rock “6” (1973) Nostalgia for POACA. Born in Durham, NC, in a district called “Hayti”, the historic African-American community that is now part of the city of Durham, North Carolina. It was founded as an independent black community shortly after the American Civil War on the southern edge of Durham by freedmen coming to work in tobacco warehouses and related jobs in the city. By the early decades of the 20th century, African Americans owned and operated more than 200 businesses, which were located along Fayetteville, Pettigrew, and Pine Streets, the boundaries of Hayti. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the neighborhood continued to develop through years of racial segregation imposed by white Democrats in the state legislature, following the Reconstruction era in the South. With black-owned businesses and services, a library, a hotel, a theatre, and a hospital, the community became self-sufficient. It declined in the late 20th century, due to suburbanization, which drew some residents to newer housing outside the area. A 1958 urban renewal and freeway project took down houses and businesses in 200 acres of the community and split it with a freeway. St. Joseph's African Methodist Episcopal Church (1891) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; its congregation was founded in 1868. The church has been used since 1975 as a community and cultural center. Hayti's residents have included African Americans who achieved national reputations for their successes. In the midst of the British Invasion and the surge of Motown Records, Bethea took on the persona of “The Maskman", first donning the mask in 1968. His backing group evolved from the Cap-Tans to The Agents. The Bethea continued recording and performing well into his 60s. This is a book about the 1970 visions and dreams of civil rights leader Floyd McKissick... who would attempt to build a new, predominately black city in North Carolina
Floyd McKissick, one of the major leaders of the civil rights movement, had an audacious, lifelong dream. He wanted to build a city — from scratch — that would create economic opportunities for Black people and be sustained by the wealth they created. It was called Soul City. And although it's been largely forgotten, he almost pulled it off.

In the event that you had to be saved by a TV doctor, which one would it be? Anele shares that 15-years ago she would have chosen Ds Huxtable... but that went sour. Now she'll choose Dr House. "He had a bit of a limp. He had a bit of a walking stick, but that walking stick carried all the knowledge to save people" Frankie's choice is Meredith Grey from the medical drama Grey's Anatomy, "I definitely had a few dreams about her doctoring me..." Not a doctor, but Thembikile takes it way back with the original Sister Bettina from Soul City, "She was teaching us about TB, about HIV, hypertension". Episode 129 of the Business Bookshelf - Dr Garth Japhet - Author of "Like Water is for Fish: The Power of Story in our Lives" Today our guest is Dr Garth Japhet As a young boy, Garth found his life radically shaped by the Jungle Doctor series of books. The stories so enthralled him that, against all advice, he set his heart on medicine. He could see his future – with a backdrop of savannas, golden sunsets, adventure and accolades – as a romantic figure, a healer, a hero. This fantasy sustained Garth through the challenges of medical training, but finally he arrived. He was Dr Japhet, living the dream. Except the dream was a nightmare. The reality of medicine was not the life he had hoped for. There were times when he cursed the power of the story that had so completely messed up his life. Having struggled with anxiety most of his life, he was catapulted into a deep depression. And then it happened. Garth stumbled upon the healing power of story – fictional, factual and his own. What magic was at work here? If stories had changed him, could he use story to change others? This question set him on the journey described in Like Water is for Fish; a journey that led to Garth co-founding Soul City and Heartlines, and to an understanding that story, in its multiple forms, is as essential for our lives as water is for fish. The book can be purchased here. The website for Garth's company is called Heartlines and can be found here - www.heartlines.org.za. The host of the podcast is Lance Peppler. On this show, we discuss the historic and progressive efforts to create Soul City, an African American community in Warren County, by Civil Rights Leaders and Attorney Floyd McKissick, Sr, during the 1970s.
Jeanne Stevens, co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, joins Carey and Savannah to talk about the importance of casting vision and identifying opportunities during times of crisis, why they don't use the word reopen, establishing healthy relational boundaries in ministry and taking the time to address personal hardships while leading.
“I thought I'd come to paradise,” said Jane Ball Groom upon arriving in Soul City, North Carolina. It wasn’t amenities or location that made Soul City paradise, but the promise of what it could be: a city built by Black people, for Black people. Our guests take us back to 1969 when the city was founded and built from (below) the ground up — and while the city itself was short-lived, we’ll see how the seeds it sowed laid roots for spaces that celebrate and center Black culture today. That's a wrap on the season! Share you stand out moments with host Saleem Reshamwala on Twitter (@Kidethic).
