Most communicators know the agony of staring at scattered notes, wondering how to shape them into a compelling message. Enter Jarrett Stevens, lead pastor Soul City Church in Chicago, who has spent 25 years honing his writing and outline process into what he now affectionately calls the “funnel of love.” Rather than a predictable formula, the funnel is like a trellis, undergirding messages with a thoughtful structure, while also letting them thrive in the freedom of the Spirit. Steve Carter asks Jarrett about how to balance levity and gravitas: When should we use humor in sermons? And when should we hold back? They also chat about Jarrett's helpful training course: The Communicator's Masterclass. Jarrett Stevens, Co-Pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago joins us to share about how we identify red flags in our family history that need healing in order to ensure that we don't pass them on.
Mother & Daughter duo Nancy and Samantha Beach are both leaning into their Enneagram number by tackling one of the most audacious goals possible: addressing the mass exodus from the church, and working to make it more inclusive. As a millennial, Samantha suspects there may be a disconnect within the generations when it comes to messaging: “We're seeing this all across society, all the -isms, right? Racism, sexism, homophobia, all these things. And, I think my friends just wanna know, is the church having these conversations too?” In this episode, we chat about how to create a healthy dialogue between people of different views and age groups, and how working together on that message was the best way to model community for those in the church: “The texture of community is vital. There's something different about confessing sins together…singing together, even learning together in a room side by side. Then there's something about the conversation before and after, that can happen.” — Nancy Beach (3w4) serves as a leadership coach with theSlingshot Group and on the teaching team at Soul City Church in downtown Chicago. Previously, Nancy served as the programming director at Willow Creek Community Church in suburban Chicago. She is also the author of An Hour on Sunday and Gifted to Lead. Nancy and her husband Warren have two adult daughters, Samantha and Johanna. Samantha Beach Kiley (3w2) is a writer and performer working at the intersection of art and faith. Samantha's creative work has appeared in theatres, churches, and non-profit spaces. She has taught at Northwestern's National High School Institute and Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre, where she is the co-education director. She and her family have recently moved to Raleigh, NC where Samantha is associate pastor at Church on Morgan in Raleigh. Jeanne Stevens is a fellow Midwest girl! Hooray! I was honored to finally meet her and have her on For Real. Jeanne lives with her family in Chicago, where she co-pastors Soul City Church. You know that I only chat with folks who will be real with us, and let me just say that Jeanne perfectly fits that bill. Her new book, What's Here Now? I loved the book and loved learning from Jeanne in this conversation. Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership with Ruth Haley Barton
Over the next few episodes we are turning our attention from a leader's personal sabbath practice towards how they can form and shape their communities around sabbath. We'll be talking to a number of pastors and leaders about their efforts and challenges in leading others in the practice. Today Ruth sits down with Jeanne and Jarrett Stevens. As co-pastors of a busy church in Chicago, the Stevens have been saved by rhythms of work and rest. Ruth talks with Jeanne and Jarrett about their own practices of sabbath, the ways they've tried to incorporate these rhythms in their church, and the challenges and opportunities presented in this as we emerge from COVID. They also pose the question, what would it look like as a leader to leave a legacy of sabbath keeping in their community? Jarrett & Jeanne Stevens founded and have served as co-lead pastors of Soul City Church in Chicago, IL for the past 11 years. They have both authored several books. Jarrett wrote “The Deity Formerly Known as God,” “Four Small Words”, and his latest release, “Praying Through.” Jeanne has authored many devotionals, “Everyday Brave,” “Grit & Grace,” and “You are Enough.” She is a contributing author to “Twelve Women of the Bible” and “Real Women, Real Faith.” She has a new book released in May of 2022 called “What's Here Now?” They are both passionate about helping people wake up to the transforming love of Jesus and experience soul-level change in every area of their lives. Some highlights from our conversation: We talk about what why they wrote the book. And we hear from Samantha's perspective what it was like writing a book with her mom. We discuss why the spiritual practice of engaging with a church community is different than other practices. And why is it critical in forming us as followers of Jesus. We talk about what threatens the church today – and what our role is in helping curb this threat. We talk about the brave and hard decision Nancy made to call our abusive behavior at her previous church, Willow Creek Community Church. And we also get to hear Samantha's perspective on how that impacted her faith journey and her relationship with the Church. We talk about being a woman in ministry and how the abuses that are rising to the surface regularly could create a knee-jerk reaction to women serving in the church. I know that you are a woman who wants to live with intentionality and presence. You want to show up for your people, and you don't want to miss the good that God offers you right this very minute. And yet… we can't focus on where we are now because we're thinking about that hard conversation we need to have next week, OR we are thinking about how unkind and mean to our mother we were our senior year of high school. So how can we stay present? How do we leave distracted living behind? Jeanne and I talk through How to know you're living a distracted life Whether you can trust your emotions And what it means to be present in your real life. For Jeanne Stevens, it didn't take long to see herself in her Enneagram type. But it took the experience of facing three deep losses in a short period of time to finally learn how to process—and ultimately let go—of grief, freeing her up to truly live in the present. In today's episode, Jeanne shares how a childhood experience led her to believe a narrative about her life that no longer serves her. She also shares the ways she's learned to live in the present through noticing and naming what's happening around her, asking and answering the all-important question: "What's Here Now?" Jeanne Stevens is the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, one of America's fastest growing urban churches. Prior to starting Soul City Church, Stevens was on the pastoral staff at Willow Creek Community Church and North Point Community Church. Our friend from Soul City Church, Pastor Jarrett Stevens, joins us to explore what it means to have wise, spiritual discernment as we continue unpacking the book of Proverbs. Speaker: Jarrett Stevens
Let us embrace the ever-present presence of God In this episode, the incredible, Jeanne Stevens shares from her new book, What's here Now? How to Stop Rehashing the Past and Rehearsing the Future-- and Start Receiving the Present. Jeanne is an author, speaker, and the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago. After finding herself in burnout and weariness, Jeanne discovered that while she was rehashing the past and living for the future, she was missing the present. When we try to change something that cannot be changed or control something that God does not want us to control, peace feels distant and almost unavailable. God revealed to Jeanne the key to peace is in the present. Join us in the Living Room as we discuss ways to find freedom, allow God to draw us close, and embrace the ever-resent presence of God. Important Takeaways from Show We can rehash the past or control the future, but the present moments are where we find peace. We need to be living in the ever-present moments in order to receive the ever-present help. (Psalm 46:1) Be thoughtful about patterns of the past and plans for the future but find contentment in the now. Peace is not contingent on our understanding, it is contingent on us being present with God. Replace the question from, “why” with the question, “what's here now?” Grace means we start by knowing that we are accepted and loved just as we are, and our job is to connect people to the Good Shepherd. That is when we are living on purpose. Presence is an ongoing practice that will always need to be worked toward and focused on. As we cultivate God's presence in our lives, breath in and out, notice our emotions, and take captive every thought that is not from Him. The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14 Links from Show Join the Insider Club - Joanna's launch team! Jeanne's Book: What's Here Now? In this season's final episode, Jenn sits down with Jeanne Stevens, to have a conversation about her new book, What's Here Now. FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and Ministry
Why are so many of the changes that the Church is currently facing so dramatically different from many of the changes that we navigated over the past few decades? And, as we recognize these changes, why is it so important to address them honestly when it comes to the future of the Church? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Nancy Beach and Samantha Beach Kiley. Nancy helped found and served at Willow Creek Church for many years, and is now a teaching pastor at Soul City Church in Chicago. Samantha serves as a creative arts pastor, and together, they wrote a new book entitled, Next Sunday: an Honest Dialogue about the Future of the Church. This is a multi-generational conversation with two people who have a heart for Jesus and a heart for His Church.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/networkSome key takeaways from this conversation:Nancy Beach on leaders growing in self-awareness: "We are all capable of blind spots. We all have ways in which we don't really see, sometimes...our unhealthy self. And so I think it begins with leaders who are growing, always, in self-awareness, allowing some trusted people, whether that be a counselor or a good honest friend, to hold up a mirror to us to actually help us see what we can't seem to see ourselves.”Samantha Beach Kiley on being more effective by slowing down: “Sometimes we're quick to leap towards the next stage of repair without doing the due diligence of confession and lament”Nancy Beach on where every church should focus their energy: “You might not be so great at strategic planning, or at your vision, or fundraising, or have a magnificent building, or anything like that. But you can focus on being a more loving, welcoming, truly welcoming, church. And that is what Jesus said would most draw people to Himself anyway. So that's where I think our energy needs to go.”Samantha Beach Kiley on hope in the future Church: "I think the hope of the Church --that it could be a force of restoration in our local community, and, and in the world at large, and in our own hearts-- I just don't think there's anything like that, and people need and want that....it's unlike any other part of modern life."Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? FrontStage BackStage is much more than another church leadership show, it is a complete resource to help you and your ministry leaders grow. Every week we go the extra mile and create a free toolkit so you and your ministry team can dive deeper into the topic that is discussed.Visit http://PastorServe.org/network to find the entire Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide (Our team pulls key insights and quotes from every conversation with our amazing guests. Are you looking for life in dead-end places? This one stopped me in my tracks when I heard it during the Easter service at Soul City Church. I can remember a time when I was looking for love, connection, and fulfillment in all the wrong places. I thought my career could meet my EVERY need, and I was wrong. I now see that I was trying to get all of this from the wrong source. Once I started to give myself all the things I expected my career to give me, my career skyrocketed. It was never my career's job to meet all my needs. I blame society for this one. We are taught to seek joy, fulfillment, significance, love, community, and connection from our work! I am not saying that you shouldn't find these things in your work; I think we are sold this lie that if we do enough "work," you will find all of it! The shift for me is that I am not asking my work to be my everything, which has changed EVERYTHING.Follow along on Instagram: @LindsaymakeswavesStay connected with all the latest happenings with LindsayShe Nets Worth: hairstylist's guide to going independent waitlist!

Hello and welcome! Today I am joined by the amazing speaker, leader, and writer, Jeanne Stevens. Let me just say that I waste no time at all in this episode by asking her all of my many questions about her trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, You heard that right… Mt. Kilimanjaro! That's so amazing! I asked the questions, and she delivered my friends… from hilarious to deeply personal thoughts; she shared all the details with us about what God was doing in her in the midst of this life-changing experience. And interestingly enough, Jeanne shares how she wonders if her book didn't actually start to take shape during her experiences on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Her soon-to-release book is called What's Here Now?, and I just love the subtitle - How to stop rehashing the past, rehearsing the future, and start receiving the present. So good. I promise you don't want to miss listening in to hear Jeanne teach us how to embrace the present moment and all that God has for us here, now. Listen in to learn more about: Valuable questions to ask ourselves as a way to come into our “now” moments often throughout the day, How the present is where God lives, and it is where God invites us to live with Him. The differences between our automatic self and our authentic self. Favorite quotes: ~ When things don't go the way you believe they should go, it is packed with all the very best learning. ~ It was such a great inner teacher for me to not make it to the top and to unwind all of what that meant in my life. ~We are so inclined to think about what happened, to go to the ‘what was, the what ifs and all I had was what IS' ,this present moment - here on the mountain. And the thing to do each day was to put one foot in front of the other and to be present with that. ~I was doing the work of God but the work of God was deteriorating in me. ~What I began to realize and recognize in my own life was that the places where I was most hanging out were in the past and in my future. I was all about rehashing things that already happened or rehearsing things that had not yet happened and I wasn't allowing myself to be present to this NOW moment. ~I need to locate myself to this location and check into this present moment. In this episode I answered this question: How can I calm myself down when I am feeling stressed so often? When it comes to creating cultures of psychological safety - building both trust and belonging - how can we better lead from a place of emotional and relational intelligence that will enable both ourselves and our teams to show up more fully? In this week's episode, Jenni has a conversation with Jeanne Stevens, Founder and Co- Lead Pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, IL. - one of America's fastest growing urban churches. Prior to starting Soul City Church, Stevens was on the pastoral staff at Willow Creek Community Church and North Point Community Church. A sought-after speaker, leader, and writer, Jeanne's passion is to help people wake up to their purpose as they pursue a life of wholehearted freedom. We were created to be “human beings” not “human doings”. But how do we as leaders manage the very real tensions between rehashing the past, rehearsing the future, all while learning to lead from a place of presence that postures us to lead with both a peace and a power that ultimately challenges those around us to do the same? Because we can reflect and we can plan but that will not happen without intentional space created in the present. For a next step, check out our 4Sight: Culture Blindspot Assessment. While most of us worked in proximity, in highly relational cultures, the pandemic truly only accelerated the expectations of flexibility that were already in motion. As our means and tools for accomplishing tasks and meeting goals were changing, so too was the definition of “the workplace”. However, one thing's for sure, in 2020 we were all forced to accelerate and adapt quickly. We were forced to forge new ways, developing new systems and strategies, but we have also been forced to manage some very real tensions: expectations, accountability, communication, protecting culture and healthy team dynamics. In this week's episode, Jenni continues the conversation about creating clarity and consistency within hybrid cultures in an interview with Kelly Skiles, XP at Soul City Church in Chicago. Kelly spends the majority of her time developing leaders, building team culture and focusing on strategy. She has worked both in ministry and in the non profit space for nearly 20 years where she has enjoyed coaching and leading dozens of teams through strategic processes to help them reach clarity and achieve their goals. She has been married to her husband Mark for 18 years and has 3 kids and loves spending her free time cheering on the Chicago Bulls. In the past, proximity helped to create accountability, but now that we've moved to cultures of flexibility, necessary feedback has naturally become less frequent. With less interaction we are then required to be more mindful and intentional about the various communication styles of those on our teams. As a leader, there is no one-size fits all approach. However, as leaders we must ask ourselves the important question - How do I need to adjust or shift in order to help create a culture that people want to be a part of and that they can contribute and do their best work? For a next step, we encourage you to connect with one of our trained and experienced 4Sight Group: Leadership Coaches.
