La tortue de Kemp, dite « la mondaine, l'une des deux plus petites espèces, l'Olivâtre, appelée « la danseuse », qui tasse le sable après la ponte, la tortue imbriquée , célèbre pour la beauté de ses écailles, on la nomme d'ailleurs « la merveille », celle à dos plat ou « visqueuse », et encore la Caouanne dite « le tank », tête massive et un corps puissant, la verte ou « végétarienne » dont la graisse est teintée par la chlorophylle des algues qu'elle absorbe et puis « la géante » qui peut peser jusqu'à 700 kilos, la tortue Luth. Sept espèces marines qui subsistent aujourd'hui sur la planète et qui ont peuplé les mythes de nombreuses sociétés côtières depuis des millénaires, et dont les plus anciennes traces d'interaction avec l'homme remontent à une chasse vieille de 7 000 ans. Sentinelles géologiques, elles ont vu les continents dériver et les empires s'effondrer. Elles ont emporté, dans leur lenteur, la mémoire d'un océan que nous commençons à peine à déchiffrer. Mais ces doyennes font face à une menace inédite : l'activité humaine frénétique. Déjà, le pillage colonial et la révolution industrielle ont provoqué un effondrement dramatique de leurs populations, ainsi, dans les Caraïbes, on estime qu'elles étaient, autrefois, plus de 100 millions contre quelques milliers aujourd'hui. Et, comme si cela n'avait pas suffi, elles subissent, maintenant, de plein fouet, la pollution plastique, les captures accidentelles et le réchauffement climatique qui menacent leur descendance. Nous sommes le 24 février 1824, à Toulon. C'est ce jour-là qu'Hercule Florence embarque à bords de la frégate militaire « La Marie-Thérèse », direction le Brésil. Après une traversée de 45 jours, le jeune homme de vingt ans accoste à Rio de Janeiro, alors capitale de l'Empire du Brésil. La première impression est pénible : Hercule déplore l'hypocrisie d'un peuple qui affiche la charité tout en pratiquant l'esclavage. L'année suivante, réalisant son rêve d'exploration, Florence saisit l'opportunité de devenir second dessinateur et homme à tout faire au sein d'une expédition scientifique russe. De retour à Rio, vivant plusieurs mois dans la précarité, l'aventurier se perfectionne dans son art graphique. Puis il contracte un mariage très stratégique épousant les idées libérales de l'époque. On le retrouve dans la province de São Paulo où il va se consacrer à l'invention scientifique, technique et artistique... Hercule Florence est animé par ce qu'il considère comme un devoir civique : « améliorer » le monde. En 1833, il développa un procédé pour fixer des images par l'action de la lumière, c'est lui qui, pour la première fois au monde, parle de "photographie". Il sera aussi à l'origine de ce que l'on appelle, aujourd'hui, la bioacoustique qui permet de révéler la dimension acoustique de la nature. Florence croyait en la grandeur de la science mais aussi aux bienfaits de l'ascension sociale. En cela, il sera déçu, estimant ne pas être reconnu à sa juste valeur.
