Episode 78: Garrett Raboin. Garrett grew up with hockey in his veins in the state of Minnesota. His dad, Bruce Raboin, was drafted to the NHL and played pro hockey. So naturally Bruce passed his passion down to his son. Garrett would go on to play NCAA D1 at St. Cloud State University, where he also wore a letter for 3 seasons. After school, Garrett jumped on a plane to begin his pro career in Finland. We talked about his experience playing and living in Finland. After Finland and a brief stop in Norway, Garrett went back to St. Cloud State as an Assistant Coach and began learning from Coach Motzko. Garrett would spend 10 seasons working along side Coach Motzko (6 at St. Cloud and 4 at Minnesota), before embarking on his own head coaching venture. Augustana University added D1 hockey to their program and Garrett was the man for the job. He spent the first year recruiting players for the program and has just finished his 2nd season behind the bench, which showed major progress. We dove deep into how the whole process went and the type of people he is looking to bring to Augustana. Keep your eye on this program and their constant progression. Hope you enjoy!

That's right, folks. The ride is sadly over, as your gracious hosts bid you adieu after three years of episodes covering the best of Knoxville soccer.Over that time, we've chronicled the birth and rise of One Knoxville SC and spoken to some legends of the local game, including youth coach Junior Santos, former Lady Vol and broadcaster Tori Beeler-Watson, eventual NCAA D1 national champions Taylor Huff and Brian Pensky, Maryville College head coach Pepe Fernandez (3x!), and current USL Championship professional Tyler Gibson. We covered Bearden girls' soccer's run to a second consecutive state title, powered by the current Florida Gator Brinley Murphy. We tried time after time to devise new ways to engage our listeners, including a merch store that, unfortunately, went nowhere. After a solid run, the revenue was simply not there to continue moving forward. But the door is not fully closed. Today, I am putting Arman Taghizadeh (or Dr. T) in the hot seat! Dr. T is a former NCAA D1 college wrestler-turned-psychiatrist, A TEDx speaker, and the host of The Mindset Experience Podcast. As an athlete and a psychiatrist, I couldn't have dreamed up a better guest for this podcast. In this interview, Dr. T. re-defines common mindset terms that get tossed around in the coaching space, but are often misunderstood. As a medical professional with a sports background, Dr. T. has so much valuable insight for mindset coaches and anyone working with athletes. He dives into: How mindset coaches and psychiatrists can work together The problem with positive affirmations (and how to make them actually work) How to break down goal setting to create a road map The science behind positive self-talk How to change your neurochemistry with a “culture of appreciation” Throughout this episode, I am constantly impressed with the way Dr. T. pulls from his scientific knowledge of the brain and human psychology to strengthen his work with athletes. This one is packed with gold for coaches, athletes, parents, and mindset coaches, so grab your headphones and get ready to laugh, learn, and level up your mindset! Follow Dr. T.: Instagram: @dr.t_sportspsych Website: https://armantaghizadehmd.com/ Here's a glance at this episode: [0:34] Dr. T. begins with a quick introduction, outlining his experience as an NCAA D1 college wrestler, and his journey to becoming a coach, then a psychiatrist. He shares what he's most proud of, and the importance of living what you teach. [5:53] As a college wrestler, Dr. T. participated in a sport that was widely misunderstood at the time, and discovered the importance of a strong mental game first-hand. He shares how his love of sports led him to med school. [12:13] Where is the line between Mental Performance and Mental Health? Dr. T. believes physical health is the precursor to physical performance, and that the same is true for mental health. He explains why practitioners with higher level degrees don't necessarily provide the best care for certain athletes. [17:37] Lindsey asks “When should athletes be referred out to a mental health professional?” Dr. T. outlines important red flags, and when collaboration is the best form of action. He shares why he doesn't use the word “normal” anymore, and warning signs that indicate the need for psychiatric help and/or parent involvement. [23:19] As a mental performance coach, Dr. T. offers an extensive first session with any athlete. He brings parents into the training, and spends a lot of time inquiring about an athlete's home life and past experiences in their sport. [27:59] Dr. T. shares how he structures his curriculum, and how he builds on each session. Lindsey asks for an example, and Dr. T. teaches his unique take on positive affirmations and self-talk. [36:23] Lindsey asks Dr. T. how (and when) he would teach a teenage athlete about the subconscious brain. Dr. T. talks about the science of “getting in the zone” and how he illustrates brain activity in different performance states. [38:35] Dr. T. dives deep into his unique take on goal setting, and why 90% of New Years Resolutions fail. He explains the importance of a roadmap, and the “magic number” of steps between you and your goal. [45:45] Lindsey and Dr. T. discuss their definition of the word “belief”. Michael Jordan missed more game winning shots than he made; Dr. T. explains how his story perfectly illustrates belief. [48:56] Dr. T. talks about the #1 thing he wants people to remember about him 20 years from now. He explains how he builds a “culture of appreciation” and talks about why an intentional gratitude practice has the power to change your neurochemistry. Even though he was cut from his high school baseball team, he won a state XC championship at Bonneville High.  Ed holds PRs of 13:32 in the 5k, 27:41 in the 10k (then a 10k record!), and a speedy 2:10:59 in the marathon. Ed has a plethora of accolades as an individual, which include being an 8-time member of the U.S Cross Country National Team; a 5-time US Road Runner of the Year as a Professional Runner. Ed is one of four men to claim the collegiate triple crown: winning the Cross Country, 5k and 10k titles. As a coach, Ed returned to BYU in 2000 as an Assistant Coach and then took over as Head Track Coach in 2013. Prior tocoming back, he coached at Weber State University. There is a laundry list of accolades to list as far as his BYU coaching career goes.  To name a few: he was named "Coach of the Year" for NCAA D1 for Cross Country twice (2019, 2024); he is a BYU Hall of Fame inductee; he was named head coach of Team USA at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships; and won cross country NCAA Division 1 titles in 2019 and most recently in December of 2024. Michael Easter is a New York Times bestselling author, journalist, and professor at the University of Nevada. His books, The Comfort Crisis and Scarcity Brain, explore how embracing discomfort and understanding our evolutionary roots can help us lead healthier, more fulfilled lives. Michael's ideas have been adopted by top-tier universities, Fortune 500 companies, professional sports teams, and elite military units. In this conversation, we explore: - Why, despite life getting easier, people are feeling less happy. - The concept of "problem creep" and how it affects our well-being. - Key practices he's integrated from his research, like rucking, stillness, and exploration that can lead to an improved quality of life. - The psychological reasons we struggle with moderation and how the scarcity loop affects our behavior. - The optimal time we should be spending in nature on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. And more. You can learn more about Michael's work at https://eastermichael.com. --- Michael Easter is a leading voice on how humans can integrate modern science and evolutionary wisdom for improved health, meaning, and performance in life and at work. He travels the globe to embed himself with brilliant thinkers and people living at the extremes. He then shares his findings and experiences with people around the world in his books and podcast and TV appearances. He is the author of The Comfort Crisis, a bestseller. The Comfort Crisis been translated into 10 different languages and adopted by Major League Baseball teams, top-ranked NCAA D1 football programs, top-tier universities and law programs, major corporations, and tier-one military units. His work shows that science has many answers. But it also proves that many aspects of the human experience and living well cannot be measured. To that end, his work combines the statistical and mystical. It melds topics ranging from medicine and anthropology to theology and philosophy, along with case studies of everyday people doing extraordinary things. He believes that new discoveries and a deeper understanding don't happen from behind a screen. To that end, Michael's investigations have taken him to meet with monks in ancient monasteries in Bhutan, lost tribes in the jungles of Bolivia, US Special Forces soldiers in undisclosed locations, gene scientists in Iceland, drug kingpins in Iraq, CEOs in Fortune-500 boardrooms, and elsewhere. Whether he is running a 100-mile ultramarathon or running across Korea, Matt lives by the mantra that, “the only limits we have are the ones we believe in” and uses gratitude to shift his mindset from complacency to contentment through every challenge, every interaction, and every piece of content. He appreciates the opportunity to show up and get a little better each day as he is consistently working on his speech to the world.  @mattchoi_6

Donald Stewart is a former NCAA D1 football player at both Stanford University and Wake Forest University. He is also an HBO actor, published children's book author and mentor to high school athletes. His dedication to sports was initially fueled by his desire to avoid doing household chores. His success inspired his community to embrace him and his brother who was born with a facial malformation. As such, his confidence grew in knowing his efforts could impact his future but also those he loved by being the star. While he became super confident, he was not super prepared for the transition to Stanford University where he would be surrounded by the brightest and most talented athletes, students, and future leaders. In  his junior year, a significant injury requiring surgery caused him to hit his rock bottom. In trying to figure out how to be happy, he chose to invest in his mind, body and spirit while exploring his passion for music and theatre. As a mentor for high school athletes, Donald uses his experience to connect and help them figure out passions outside of sport by tapping into what motivates and inspires them within their sport. @_donaldstewart

Kate Parker is a mother, wife, former NCAA D1 athlete, Ironman, TEDx speaker, professional photographer and New York Times bestselling author whose first book “Strong is the New Pretty” garnered support from the Spice Girls, David Beckham, Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson. Her work has been featured in several major magazines and her clients include REI, Verizon, Athleta and American Express.   Growing up, she was known for being loud, driven and perfectionistic which might be associated with “being strong” but typically not “pretty.” Like many female athletes, as she became more competitive in her sport, she started emphasizing being skinnier. However, a coach helped her reframe her body image and in turn her internal view of strength and beauty.  As a mother and photographer, she uses her critical eye to point out perception vs reality while capturing powerful emotions to help us realize that exuberance needs no apology. In her newest book, “Force of Nature” she shows us why “too much” is actually the right amount.  @katetparker, katetparker.com

It was a busy weekend for Iowa Basketball and Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann have you covered from both the Hawkeye men and women are concerned. We open the pod with a long discussion of our day at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday watching Caitlin Clark and Iowa knock off Ohio State. We talk about Clark setting the all-time scoring mark for a player in NCAA D1 competition and what it means.  We also dive into the game and the unfortunate injury to starting guard Molly Davis. If she is out, how will Iowa fill that void? Who can step in and who needs to step up? Then we look at Iowa's road in the Big Ten Tournament, which will get underway for the Hawkeyes on Friday late afternoon. Then we move over to the Iowa men, who picked up a huge road win on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern. We look at how the Hawkeyes were able to hold off the Wildcats down the stretch and the strong development of Josh Dix as a scorer in the last couple of weeks and how that has helped Iowa in their recent run. We also talk about the three key possessions down the stretch for Iowa in the victory. Finally we wrap up looking at what it will take for the Hawkeyes to get off the bubble and firmly into the NCAA Tournament once again this year.  Finally we finish up talking about the struggling Iowa baseball team. They dropped two of three at Ole Miss this weekend once again it was the bullpen that was the cause of their struggles. Can this be fixed in the short term and what do we think about the hitting so far this season? We also look at the upcoming schedule for Iowa, starting with a home game on Tuesday.

Schuyler Bailar, influential athlete, author, educator, and vocal LGBTQ+ advocate, shares his transformative journey. As the first publicly documented NCAA D1 transgender man to compete as a man in any sport, Schuyler's story is at the forefront of the debate on trans athletes in college sports. Assigned female at birth, Schuyler opens up about the internal struggle he faced in accepting his own boyhood, initially associating masculinity with harmful behaviors. He offers candid insight into the performance of masculinity, highlighting how many boys and men seek validation solely within the male gaze, rooted in a desperate need for belonging. A gifted swimmer, Schuyler's passion and talent have been constant through his journey of self-discovery. He provides an intimate look at locker room dynamics, offering a unique perspective on male bonding rituals and the quest for peer validation. His decision to join Harvard's men's swim team, after being initially recruited for the women's team, was more than a sports headline. This choice was the first statement of his personal truth, and also marked a significant moment in sports history, challenging norms and sparking discussions on inclusivity in athletics.  Schuyler's story is a testament to the strength of character and authenticity, demonstrating how embracing one's true identity can be a powerful tool for challenging and redefining societal norms.
