Leadership is an art that is cultivated through discipline and practice. Great leaders are not born but rather made through a series of habits and actions that shape their character and abilities. In this episode, John discusses the habits of amazing leaders and how they can be developed to become amazing leaders. Listen to this episode to learn more: [00:00] - Intro [01:09] - Qualities of great leaders [01:37] - Having a morning routine [04:00] - Deciding ahead of time [06:33] - Doing what's right [08:02] - Practicing servant leadership [11:55] - Closing remarks KEY INSIGHTS: Waking up at the right time, with or without an alarm, is important for starting the day off well. You must start the day off on the right foot and avoid harmful habits. Pre-decide and prioritize important tasks and activities, including spending time with your spouse to improve productivity and relationships. Do the right thing instead of taking the easy route when facing challenges. It can lead to better outcomes in the long term. Prioritize the development of others by creating a culture that fosters growth and caring for individuals, helping them become exceptional leaders. NOTABLE QUOTES: "The absolute best leaders are not always the smartest, the hardest working. They're not necessarily the best-connected people. But the most amazing leaders out there intentionally commit to strategic habits that produce fantastic results." "The difference between where you are and where you might want to be is the pain that you are unwilling to endure." "Leaders who get the most out of their people are those who care most about their people." "We don't have to like everyone that's on our team. But they need to know that we care about them, no matter what." "The best leaders are never about themselves. They are about others, building into others, helping them become great leaders." "Leaders who get the most out of their people are those who care most about their people." "In order for us to be servant leaders to be putting the needs of others before ourselves, we need to start always with having that other person in mind for every single time we are involved with that person." If you want to be an exceptional leader for those you lead or an amazing friend/significant other for those you care about, it is crucial to understand the habits that drive amazing leaders. In his continuing discussion on this topic, John shares the remaining four habits the most amazing leaders consistently exhibit. This episode serves as a conclusion to the previous episode, where John explained the first four habits. Listen to this episode to learn more: [00:00] - Intro [01:40] - Recap of Habits of Amazing Leaders (Part 1) [01:53] - Don't quit until the job's done [03:27] - Raise your self-expectations [04:59] - Inspire yourself first [06:32] - Get back up and keep going [09:38] - Closing remarks KEY INSIGHTS: When it's done, it's done and not before: Leaders must not quit until the job is done and make the hard decisions required to lead their teams through challenges. Raise your self-expectations: To become an exceptional leader, leaders need to raise their own expectations and strive for excellence to inspire their teams to do the same. Inspire yourself first: The best leaders inspire others, but they can only do this if they are investing in themselves first. Get back up and keep going: Even in the face of adversity or failure, great leaders do not give up. They learn from their mistakes, adapt their strategies, and keep moving forward toward their goals. NOTABLE QUOTES: "The best leaders are intentionally committed to those habits that produce the absolute best results for themselves first, and for their teams, their families." "As leaders, if we haven't determined ahead of time for ourselves, that we're going to continue to do the job to do the thing to lead well, all the way through, then there's no way we can expect our teams, our families to do the same thing." Today's guest for the Mads Singers Management Podcast is Todd Kuckkahn, a keynote speaker, executive coach, and fellow DiSC practitioner.Although Todd has had several experiences under his belt, it wasn't until a couple of months ago that he decided to take the leap of faith and become a full-time entrepreneur. Much of Todd's work involves aiding, developing, and creating businesses; he was also a high school basketball coach, where he also taught in high school and even in colleges. Although entrepreneurship can be quite a challenge, it has its highs when you seal the deal with a client and its lows when you question yourself if you can eat next month. The rewards that you can reap are worth it! It's not always set in stone because some may become an entrepreneur early on while others may have it later in life, but regardless of when you will be taking that leap of faith, it's essential to keep in mind the lessons you pick up learning along the way. While there are apparent differences between big corporate companies to small and medium businesses and startups, regardless of where you belong, it's essential to stay focused on your purpose and why: What's the reason behind it? Why are you doing it? I cannot stress enough how important communication is because often, when high-performing managers or anyone on your staff starts performing poorly, it could be they have problems at home. Instead of waiting around for things to worsen, it's essential to approach them and help them get them back on track. One of the easiest ways to do this is with the use of DiSC in your workplace or organization; this allows you to discover a person's communication style and meet them halfway rather than dragging them through the mud. We are all bound to make mistakes. However, because we have self-awareness, we now know what to do in the future to avoid repeating that mistake. But to know oneself, one must practice what they absorb from reading books or listening to podcasts, and these don't happen overnight! These habits take time, so allow yourself lots of room for improvement. Be mindful of what you are feeding yourself, regardless of its platform; rather than binge-watch a show, you can spend that time exercising or reading.Key Learning Points: Mads says that he has observed that most teachers make good managers. - 01:32 Todd says that being an entrepreneur doesn't need to have a timeline. To some, it may happen when they are as young as 22, while others may achieve it later in life. - 03:36 Drama and conflict will always be part of the business, your family, and even your relationships. Still, Todd says that conflicts can be a good thing when you know how to handle them, and that's why he says that you must have your base value and continue to build on that and develop your communication skills.- 05:39 Todd adds once you develop your communication and people see that you're an honorable person because you live up to your values, then the trust grows, and by trusting each other, you can have constructive conversations around that conflict because the faith is there.. - 06:04 Mads says that people don't understand people who are different from them. That is why he advocates the importance of learning about DiSC and applying it in life or your workplace. - 10:36 In building your company culture, Todd shares his 3-prong mantra: Dream Big, Know How to Have Fun in the Work Place, and Get Stuff/Work Done.- 15:13 Todd recommends reading as a tool for personal development, whether by yourself or within a company, that you can then use and relate with people by having conversations. - 17:50 Taking a cue from Simon Sinek, Todd shares how exercise and love are similar because you don't instantly fall in love with somebody, but rather it's a process when taking on a partner. - 21:59 Todd says that we all make mistakes, but we must have self-awareness so that we won't repeat that mistake in the future. - 23:22 Todd says that it's vital for business owners and leaders to detach themselves from their business and nurture relationships with people, regardless of whether it's done over a Zoom meeting or in person if they are nearby. Have an inner circle where you can discuss your challenges so they can help you solve them- 27:08 Resources Mentioned:FISH! philosophyI Have a Dream by Martin Luther KingThe 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You (10th Anniversary Edition by John C. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Ola Tunde to talk about Agile Leadership; this is certainly a recurrent topic, but a needed one, since it is easy not to really have leadership in place as part of an Agile Journey or even some organizations' leaders don't really know how to contribute. In this episode, Ola and Dan share the differences between a manager and a leader, and the features that define a great leader, as the necessary piece for an organization to really thrive. Key Takeaways Managers are not necessarily leaders. A leader draws people, a manager forces them. Agility is a better way of doing what you have been already been doing. A good leader is the picture of Agility within the organization that the people can follow. A leader must model the behavior wanted in the organization, exhibiting principles and values that others should follow, too. A Leader is the one who knows, goes, and shows the way. Without a great leader, an organization can not thrive. A leader must always pay attention to the human factor. It is the responsibility of a leader to attract, retain, and even develop new talent that will fulfill the organization's vision. Not everyone would be the right fit for an organization. Leaders who are emotional and who are not fully devoted to the people they are serving will cause the organization nothing but commotion. Sometimes a leader must be ready to adjust the ways to maintain the vision when it is needed. People are not resources. The three things leaders focus on: Setting direction. Inspiring commitment. Building capacity. Mentioned in this Episode: The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You, by John C. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Ola Tunde, who is a principal consultant in AgileThought Company. In today's episode, Ola and Dan discuss the topic of psychological safety and psychological danger; they dive deep into the meaning of these two concepts, providing valuable and practical examples. Psychological safety needs to be promoted by leaders to foster innovation and to create a better atmosphere where employees can express themselves in an authentic way without fearing failure, but on the contrary, embracing every mistake as a learning opportunity. Key Takeaways What do psychological safety and psychological danger mean? Psychological safety is the ability to be transparent and to be honest without the fear of danger. Psychological danger is the inability to admit I am wrong or a failure. Innovating is only possible when leadership allows failure, and most of the time when trying something new you will fail many times before achieving success. Every team member should be able to admit a failure or better called a learning opportunity. The concept of personal agility and its bond to trust. If a team member does not trust a colleague or someone he or she is working for, there is bitterness that will result in a lack of innovation. Trust is needed to go over the fear of failure. What are some strategies that could increase psychological safety? Show people how much you care. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, “People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Care about how you make people feel, wisely Maya Angelou stated, “People will forget what you say, do, or give to them but they will never forget how you make them feel.” Care about the human being, not the resources. Bring your humanity to work; share something personal and create personal and authentic connections. Have aligned values and aligned perspectives. How can a manager or a leader foster psychological safety? Leaders should come to the place where the work is done, participate in ceremonies, engage with the employees, and know about them and what is going on in their lives. Treat people so right that they don't want to leave your company. What are some strategies that team members could provide for creating more psychological safety? Regardless of the outcome, believe everybody on the team was doing their best given the variables they were exposed to. Make sure that the people who don't know about a certain subject, can learn about it. Baby steps are important! Psychological safety happens gradually and it is a place of a continuous journey, not a destination. Leaders should use metrics to create conversations not to evaluate. “One of my taglines is human-focused business strategy because I truly believe that humans are the core of every business, and we have to remember that.” – Céline Williams As a leader in 2020, you were hit with the pandemic gut punch in April. And depending upon where you are in the world right now, the second wave of Covid is already underway or expected. In today's episode we talk with Culture Strategist and Executive Coach Céline Williams about leading through the rest of 2020. Celine is the founder of Revisionary, a consulting firm focused on leadership, culture, and strategy. In this episode you'll learn: - What has worked effectively this year when leading remotely - What hasn't worked about remote leadership (and why) - 4 simple ways leaders can re-adjust their approach for the second wave of Covid (and how to make those changes stick) - Why productivity tools and apps aren't all they're cracked up to be...and more! If you find this episode valuable, please subscribe and rate us on Apple Podcasts! Talk about your (second wave) remote work plan NOW There's a lot of really temporary, band-aid solutions that are happening that are not sustainable, especially if we don't know how long the second wave is and especially if you care about your people being happy and healthy and having a good employee experience, team experience, culture experience. The first thing I would say is, everyone needs to be taking a look at how cobbled together their remote plan is. For a lot of companies, and for a lot of teams inside certain companies, this remote work plan is not a plan. It was a “We are all working from home starting Monday” – full stop. That's not a remote work plan. When you are actually implementing a remote work plan, it's a 6-12 month plan to get everything lined up from technology to hardware, to ways of working, the new rules around meetings, to how we communicate. All of that stuff, in an ideal situation, is 6-12 months of planning. People had less than a week. It's crazy! I want to acknowledge that I recognize that everyone is doing their best inside these circumstances, and that is phenomenal, and people are doing as well as they can. If you are leading a team that was thrown into remote work without that plan, and is still either fully, half, partly doing that, the more planning you can do for the second wave, the more you can start to have conversations around what people really need, what their experiences have been, what has or hasn't worked for them. The earlier you can start to have that [conversation], i.e., now, the more successful the second wave of remote work is going to look for your team and your company. Be open to other people's remote work experiences I think the thing that as worked well consistently when people have done it is really not assuming that your experience is everyone's experience, and asking questions and being very open to other people's experiences. I have seen lots of leaders who have made assumptions that because they are having a specific experience – their kids are older, or they don't have kids, they have a home office that's set up separately – they assume that “This working from home is easy! This is great! I don't have to commute!” That is not the experience of all of your people, and when we assume that, you are doing them a disservice because you are not acknowledging their experience and you are not creating a safe environment for them to share their experience. Is that meeting really necessary? One of the things that has not worked well is, people have not changed the type or number or quality of their meetings and just moved them on to Zoom. That is a massive failure. When we are working remotely, we have to change the type of meetings we're having, we have to put a different structure around them. I know executives who literally spent 8 straight hours a day on Zoom meetings for the first part of this pandemic, because that's just what their schedule had. I think the starting point for all of it is evaluating the types of meetings that people are having – are these the best use of our time right now? Some think that principles can hurt profits, but when today's guest learned to practice his principles and values at work, his profits blossomed. Bobby Albert is the president of Values Driven Leadership, a consulting business focused on teaching the potential of building foundational values into company culture. Bobby says correctly taught and applied values create a profitable atmosphere since employees feel empowered and valuable. Principles produce profits. He says he went through a two-year discovery process to unearth his company's core values of valuing people, seeking wisdom, embracing humility, and always continuing to learn. After passing these on to his employees through a game of Wheel of Fortune (a creative interaction with employees that's worth listening to the episode to hear about), Bobby says he watched a miracle unfold. In only six years, the company grew profits by 500 percent. CALLOUT: Find what's important to you: Apply for your free 30-minute Freedom Breakthrough Session to find out the values that can drive your profits without driving you to long hours at the office. Bobby says that allowing people to believe in that foundation spurred them toward going the extra mile in all their work. That took his company to another level. In fact, his company became a Top 100 Best Company to Work for in Texas twice. What a “Best Company to Work For” does to make employees happy while still profiting. What employees learned from a game of Wheel of Fortune. The missing ingredient for your business. A $4 million mistake and how Bobby bounced back from it. Patrick Crews has been a photographer for three years now. Yet, it was long before that when he started to think about life dreams and goals. He majored in psychology in college. The Dream Nation Project initially started out as a research project. Shane was interested in the internal and external motivational factors behind pursuing goals. He did this by centering the project around one main question: "What is your life dream?" Hamilton Glass, a mural artist from Richmond, VA was the first person he interviewed and photographed for this project. During the interview Hamilton explained to Shane exactly how he arrived at his specific life dream; the story behind it. He quickly realized that the story behind the dream is just as important, if not more important than the simple answer of "What is your life dream?" Shane's own personal dream is that these stories and dreams He's documenting inspire the people that come across them to pursue their own dreams. Josh Delaney is a serial entrepreneur to the furthest extent of the word. One of the hardest issues I had with Josh, is that there is no real category to put him in; he is a full-time hustler. Josh broke into the business world at 18 years old starting his career as a professional network marketer & sales professional. Shortly after with his newly founded time freedom and success he went on to experiment with his health and fitness in his spare time and went from geek to fitness freak in less than 60 days. In 2013, he co-founded the revolutionary non-profit, DoingMyPart.com, making it no longer an issue of money that people could not participate int charity; it created true people power. As if that was not enough, Josh later went on and purchased multiple Anytime Fitness franchises in a very short time, and with his sales & marketing skills he quickly transformed their culture. He currently is working on making sales something more easily workable for the every day person.
